Fostering energy transition and transport fluidity in European port cities

    No full text
Europe as a whole is often regarded as a frontrunner in the domain of port-city sustainability, thanks to a wide set of international, national, and local initiatives. This paper is a review of local initiatives that are either individual (single port city) or collective (partnerships among several port cities), in the domains of energy transition and transport fluidity. We find that individual initiatives concentrate in northern Europe, in the largest ports, and at a few southern ones like Valencia or Marseilles. Conversely, collective actions are more concentrated in the south, including mostly small and medium-sized port cities, through projects financed by the European Commission. Besides, we show that port-urban congestion and PM2.5 pollution concentrate in the demographically and logistically largest port cities, which also dominate container throughput rankings and have the highest number of initiatives. We discuss the imperatives of ensuring a better regional balance across the continent and its port-city hierarchy

Between Autonomy and Determinism: The Meso-Régulation Approach Applied to Digital Platforms

    No full text
International audienceThis article shows that the French régulation approach, although never explicitly framed as such, relies on methods rooted in meso-level analysis, situated between micro and macro perspectives. This paves the way for a research agenda that explores how the socioeconomic arenas under study are differentiated and how their actors develop diverse institutional arrangements across groups of interest. Building on multiple case studies, we propose a conceptual framework to examine meso-régulation dynamics. These cases highlight sectoral, territorial, or professional forms of régulation that do not, however, amount to an “accumulation regime” in the classical sense. Digital platforms serve as an empirical example to test the heuristic potential of the meso-régulation perspective

    No full text

    No full text
International audienceThis article explores the official recognition of a citizens’police force for the protection of animals and the environment, which constitutes an important European precedent to follow. We examine the close relationship that is developing in Italy between activism and legality. The interplay between the activity of these guards and the law can be seen in two ways: on the one hand, the institution of the guards arises from the legal activity itself; on the other hand, this type of institution affects the relationship that is established in the territories between legality and the protection of birds. This reveals a relationship with the law that is not the monopoly of the authorities alone, since it involves citizens who make use of the legal framework, following a dynamic in which the law is no longer simply an instrument of state power but an issue in power local relationships.

Identification of transdiagnostic phenomena among patients, the general population, relatives, and mental health professionals using topic modeling techniques

    No full text
International audienceIntroduction Recent research has highlighted the limitations of the categorical approach to mental disorders and has increasingly supported the development of a transdiagnostic perspective. This emerging approach focuses on common distal factors (circumstantial, biological, and social) and psychological processes that contribute to psychological suffering across a range of disorders, as well as on the resulting psychological symptoms. The present study aims to identify transdiagnostic distal factors, psychological processes, and symptoms by analyzing narratives through topic modeling—an unsupervised machine learning technique, specifically within Natural Language Processing (NLP). Topic modeling enables the automatic extraction of latent themes from unstructured text, making it possible to identify psychological patterns grounded in patients’ lived experiences. Methods We recruited four groups of participants: Patients diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder ( N = 445), Individuals from the general population ( N = 570), Relatives of patients with psychiatric disorders ( N = 354), and Mental health professionals ( N = 131). Participants answered open-ended questions exploring the causes of psychological suffering, their wishes for change, and their previous experiences with psychotherapy. Results We identified 258 topics, which were organized into 12 overarching themes. The most prominent topics concerned Emotional and Psychological Difficulties , Family and Social Relationships , and Therapeutic Processes . Each theme showed a comparable prevalence across the different diagnostic categories, supporting the transdiagnostic nature of these phenomena. Conclusion Topic modeling can be used effectively to identify transdiagnostic distal factors, psychological processes, and symptoms from diverse narratives. This approach tends to provide a novel means of supporting the relevance and validity of the transdiagnostic perspective
