House as Ritual Space: The Symbolism of the House and its Protective Systems in Ladakh

    No full text
International audienceIn Ladakh, a house symbolises more than just its functionality; its physical features and spatial organisation convey subtle meanings. Indeed, every house can be considered a 'sacred' space, not just the area around or beyond the threshold of the prayer room, but the entire house. Local deities that intervene when offended by people’s behaviour are associated with different parts of the interior of the house, such as the fireplace, the main pillar in the room where the main household activities take place, and the storerooms. Furthermore, various protective measures are employed to safeguard the house and its inhabitants, including humans and livestock, from potential harm by spirits or malevolent forces. This paper focuses on the data I have collected during my annual fieldwork in Ladakh since 1980. The shift towards a more materialistic society has altered the younger generations' perception of the world. Certain aspects of local beliefs have already been lost. For example, protective devices are disappearing from new concrete houses in villages that can be reached by road, as are the religious specialists who knew how to make them

Rapport de recherche Transition Rapide et Juste des Élevages Bretons

    No full text
This report, produced as part of the Trajé’Bretons project, aims to shed light on the various forms of energy transition in agriculture and to examine their implications in terms of economic performance, as well as environmental and social issues. Indeed, a socio-technical transition such as the energy transition entails major disruptions, particularly in the commitments and practices of the actors involved, foremost among them livestock farmers. The transformations brought about by these transitions require an inevitable reorganization of farms and affect not only their economic performance, but also employment, working conditions, farmers’ health, professional practices, and their relationship to their occupation and its role in society. Focusing on the case of Brittany (France), this report seeks to understand how farmers and agriculture are being reshaped through the implementation of the energy transition. These changes may be perceived as more or less fair, and as sufficiently rapid—or not—to contribute effectively to the energy transition required in response to the ongoing ecological crisis.

The Palaeolithic origin of eyed needles

    No full text
International audienceVarious Palaeolithic tools made of osseous materials can be attributed to the processing of skin and plant fibres for clothing production, such as smoothers, awls, and possibly double points and épingles. However, the eyed needle is the technological innovation that unequivocally marks the beginning of intricate sewing in the Palaeolithic. It is a tool whose shape and mode of use have persisted until today, although its manufacturing techniques have changed over time. This tool is perfectly suited to manual sewing, which is inherently complex, and has various technical, economic, and cultural implications for hunter-gatherer societies. We present a concise overview of the published research on the origin of eyed needles in the Palaeolithic, in different parts of the world and at different periods, from Siberia and the Caucasus to China and North America, and their spread across different territories with their evolution and diversity. We will address the importance of morphometric analyses that allow us to assess this evolution and diversity within a techno-complex and between geographic areas and chrono-cultural contexts, presenting different hypotheses proposed about their origin and dispersion. Additionally, we discuss technological issues regarding the raw materials used (generally bone, although some specimens have been recovered in antler and ivory), and their transformation into needles. Studies in this regard are scarce, and most have focused on the Late Glacial period of Western Europe, although they are gradually extending to other geographic areas and periods. Thus, we examine the different techniques employed in producing the same object type at different times and places in the Northern Hemisphere. Finally, we address the question of needle use, the threads that may have been used, fractures, and repairs

    No full text
International audienceThe intuition behind this text is that Pascal Doury was a discreet, important, albeit marginal, figure in a literary and artistic moment. He collaborated repeatedly with Christophe Tarkos, Katalin Molnár, and Charles Pennequin, three authors published by POL, without ever publishing himself with POL. Before “taking up poetry,” Doury came from an artistic elsewhere that was already peripheral, even marginal. And his foray into poetry was brutally cut short by his death in September 2001, at the age of 45. This was only four years after the publication of the first issue of poézi prolétèr, his inaugural collaboration with Tarkos and Molnár. Reconstructing the editorial and artistic chronology of these years, as well as that of a body of work accomplished through small-run publications—and whose two authors are now deceased—requires meticulous work. Identifying the nature of the collaborations and the contribution of each author at all levels even involves conducting what resembles an investigation: clues are found, testimonies are collected, and sometimes a trail can be traced. What emerges, at the crossroads of several strands, is the central yet peripheral role of Pascal Doury, a singular artist-publisher whose formal rigor, experience, and elegance rubbed off on his collaborators.L’intuition qui préside à l’écriture de ce texte est que Pascal Doury est un animateur discret, important bien que marginal, d’un moment littéraire et artistique.

Group-Robot Interaction in the Wild: An Exploratory Field Study in Semi-public Spaces

    No full text
How does interaction with robots differ between spontaneously formed groups and individuals?Despite increasing robot deployment in public spaces, this question remains understudied in real-world settings. We conducted a field study deploying a service stationary robot in semi-public office spaces, tracking 221 individuals (42 alone, 179 in groups) across 95 interaction opportunities. Cookies were placed on accessible trays, creating a low-barrier functional interaction opportunity (taking a cookie) while allowing observation of spontaneous social behaviors. Groups demonstrated significantly higher engagement: functional interactions and social gestures. Within groups, leader presence amplified social engagement threefold. These findings are consistent with descriptive norm theory: group presence and leader behavior were associated with increased social engagement, though context-specific factors may moderate these effects. Results highlight the potential value of group detection for robots in multi-user environments, and demonstrate the feasibility of integrating psychological theory with automated tracking to study spontaneous human-robot encounters in the wild

    No full text
This research-creation video is based on a rewriting of the famous traditional French song “A la claire Fontaine”, which recounts the young girl's heartbreak, and whose more or less erotic textual interpretation remains polysemous. My rewriting of the song's lyrics emphasises the effects of rupture, highlighting the vulnerability of women, the suffering of victims and the overbearing nature of rapists, who are far too little worried and condemned. The images that accompany the song work on ellipsis, suggestion and the artist-researcher's body-to-body contact with the water and the rock. These are at once witnesses to the aggression, places of memory and temptation, but also places of anchorage and purification.
