Collective agreements are not enough: A study of unionization and social partnership in the Norwegian fast food industry

    No full text
I tillegg utsettes klubbene for aktiv motstand. MasteroppgavenSOS360MASV-SO

Vertebrate decision making leads to the interdependence of behaviour and wellbeing

Animal behaviour is commonly modelled by fitness-based optimization or individual-based simulation. Each has limitations: the premises for fitness-maximizing modelling are violated in most ecological and sociobiological settings while individual-based modelling generally does not include an evolutionary approach to behaviour. We propose a new approach focusing on the bodily mechanisms that vertebrates (and some other animals) use when making behavioural decisions. Our hypothesis is that decision making in vertebrates is a two-step process where emotion (a cognitive mechanism that for a while may become a state controlling the body and driving behaviour) is the common currency: (1) determining through competition among emotions the organism's current priority and (2) choosing the behaviour that maximizes imagined near-future emotional wellbeing, aided by episodic-like memory. Animals with subjective experience use awareness of their strongest emotional need to concentrate attention, which is a higher level of agency than the unconscious robustness mechanisms in all life forms. Furthermore, animals with imagination-based prediction maximize emotional wellbeing in their decision making. That is, evolution started out without a goal, but from it, animals that live for short-term wellbeing emerged. We show that wellbeing and other mechanisms of organismal robustness can be used in a new class of models that is broadly applicable to animals in natural and artificial settings. This modelling approach can make novel predictions about the links between wellbeing, behaviour and function.publishedVersio

«Chilling with friends» About English elements in texts and fictional messages among students in primary and secondary school

    No full text
In my work as a Norwegian teacher, I read a significant number of student texts each year. One thing I have always noticed is that the language used in a Norwegian academic text seemingly appears to be influenced by other factors. Now that social media is everywhere and I can’t walk through the cafeteria without hearing English words at least once, I began to wonder how much of teenager´s writing is actually influenced by English. In my master thesis, I have therefore aimed to investigate the occurrence of English elements in adolescents’ writing, based on the question «To what extent is students' writing influenced by English?» To explore this, I have collected a random sample of texts in the Norwegian language subject from 8th grade, 10th grade, and 3rd year of upper secondary school. To have a broader basis for comparison, I was fortunate to gain access to parts of the material from the project Mulitlektale praksiar på sosiale medium (translated to Multiliteracy Practices in Social Media). Adolescents in upper secondary school in the MPSM project have written four different, short, fictional messages. To answer the research question, I have analyzed the texts and sorted findings of English occurrences into various categories. What I find are errors/excessive use of capital letters, incorrect use of reflexive possessives, spelling errors, phrase borrowings, English words, and hybrid words. Overall, the occurrence of English elements is very low, with only 0,62% in total in the student texts and 1,14% in the short fictional messages. The findings are discussed using theory and previous research related to language contact, code-switching, loanwords, neologisms, and English influence – both direct and more subtle. The project has clarified that English influence manifests itself in far more than just direct loans, but overall, there is much less occurrence of English elements than initially assumed. This applies to both the more informal texts as well as the more formal ones. Among possible explanations, I have pointed out that the degree of perceived linguistic freedom, as well as the topic of the assignment, has some bearing on how much English youth use when writing. I also believe that there is a need for more research, both on student texts in schools and in other areas where we seem to think that English influence occurs.Erfaringsbasert masteroppgave i undervisning med fordypning i norskNORMAU650VID-MAUNO

Benzene exposure and risk of colorectal cancer by anatomical subsite in the Norwegian offshore petroleum workers cohort

Objective To investigate the association between low levels of benzene exposure (≤0.879 parts per million [ppm]-years) and risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) including its anatomical subsites. Methods Among 25,347 male workers in the Norwegian Offshore Petroleum Workers (NOPW) cohort with offshore work history (1965–1998), 455 CRC cases were diagnosed 1999–2021. We compared these with a subcohort (n = 2031) drawn from the full cohort. Work histories were linked to a previously developed industry-specific benzene job-exposure matrix (JEM). Cox regression for case-cohort analyses was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CRC, adjusted for age, body mass index, smoking, alcohol intake, red/processed meat intake, and physical activity. Results Risks of CRC increased with increasing benzene exposure. For all CRC, the HRs (95% CI) for the most exposed [quartile 4] vs. the unexposed were 1.32 (0.96 to 1.81, [0.177–0.879 ppm-years]; p-trend = 0.085) for cumulative, 1.52 (1.11 to 2.07, [17–34 years]; p-trend = 0.032) for duration, and 1.56 (1.15 to 2.12, [0.015–0.046 ppm]; p-trend = 0.005) for average intensity of benzene exposure. For right-sided colon cancer, the association was most evident for exposure duration (HR = 2.25 (1.33 to 3.80), quartile 4 [17–34 years] vs. unexposed; p-trend = 0.007). Sensitivity analyses showed consistent associations. Conclusion This study found positive exposure-response associations between low-level benzene exposure and CRC risk in offshore petroleum workers. These findings add to emerging evidence that benzene can be associated with solid tumours including lung and bladder, which potentially has important occupational and public health implications.publishedVersio

Analyzing Rapid EV Adoption and End-of-Life Battery in Norway's Circular Economy

    Get PDF
The transport emission sector increased at an average annual rate of 1.7 percent from 1990 to 2022. Passenger vehicle emissions in Europe account for 16 percent of total transport emissions. This significant share has driven a major transition in Norway, a frontrunner in the electric vehicle industry, to accelerate the shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. The rapid adoption of electric vehicles leads to a mass of electric vehicle batteries. These batteries, predominantly belonging to battery electric vehicles, are lithium-ion batteries, which contain lithium, cobalt, and nickel, and are hazardous to the environment. Additionally, the minerals used in the batteries are valuable as natural resources. Hence, proper waste management is crucial to address the implications of this shift towards sustainability. Without it, zero-emission vehicles alone cannot guarantee environmentally friendly technology. Taking the batteries into the circular economy is the focus of this study, highlighting the low rates of circularity in Norway, which are around four times below the global average. The thesis discusses and analyzes two recycling and repurposing methods using the system dynamics methodology. The main idea is to test the efficiency of both methods in complementing each other and reducing the accumulation of post-used batteries. In addition to the baseline model scenario, other possible scenarios have been implemented to test the policies under diverse conditions. After analyzing and evaluating the results, the best-case scenario is recommended. Additionally, suggestions for further research and study are provided to facilitate future improvements.Masteroppgave i systemdynamikkGEO-SD351INTL-PSYKINTL-SVINTL-MNMASV-SYSDYINTL-JUSINTL-KMDINTL-MEDINTL-H

Lung function outcomes from childhood to adulthood after extremely preterm birth : Data from three population-based cohorts

    Get PDF
Background: Neonatal medicine improved considerably from the 1980s to 2000s, a period representative of key advances in neonatal medicine. This led to increasing survival of more immature infants born extremely preterm (EP, born ≤ 28 gestational age) or with extremely low birthweight (< 1000 g), collectively referred to as EP-born in this thesis. As survival first became possible for the majority of EP-born in the 1980s, they are only now reaching adulthood in numbers of consequence for research. The lifelong pulmonary consequences of EP birth and effects of advances in neonatal medicine remain unknown. Two potential long-term trends may arise from advances in neonatal medicine: better outcomes due to improved care for all; or worsened outcomes due to increased survival of more high-risk individuals. Lung function developments in EP-born after the onset of the physiological decline is unexplored, and there is concern for early development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Aims: To obtain comprehensive and longitudinal data on lung function in three cohorts born EP during three different decades representative of key advances in neonatal medicine, to explore the cohort effects of these advances, and to assess lung function and risk of COPD in a cohort of EP-born subjects in their fourth decade of life. Methods: Three regional population-based cohorts born EP during 1982–85, 1991–92 and 1999–2000, and term-born controls matched for age and gender, were studied. Lung function outcomes were assessed three times over two decades, at ages from 10 to 35 years. The subjects underwent spirometry, body plethysmography, and tests of lung diffusing capacity, bronchodilator reversibility, and airway hyperresponsiveness. Spirometry data from all assessments were analysed longitudinally. All lung function outcomes were compared between term-born and EP-born, and across cohorts, at the age of 18 years. All lung function outcomes and risk of COPD was assessed for the 82–85 cohort at 35 years of age. Results: A total of 148/174 (85%) eligible EP-born and 138 term-born controls participated at least once. Compared with term-born, EP-born had lower forced expiratory airflow measures at most assessments. The expiratory airflow trajectories of EP-born developed largely in parallel, but at lower levels, compared with term-born. Expiratory airflow measures improved in EP-born relative to term-born with each consecutive decade of birth. At 18 years of age, most lung function deficits were largely comparable across the three cohorts. Increasing birthweight z-score and use of antenatal corticosteroids were positively associated with improving lung function outcomes. There were signs of improvement in expiratory flow rates with more recent birth decade in EP-born individuals with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). At the age of 35 years, subjects born EP in the 1980s had widespread lung function impairments, with partly reversible airway obstruction, reduced lung diffusion capacity, increased airway hyperresponsiveness and signs of air trapping in subjects with neonatal BPD. Close to half of the EP-born subjects fit a pre-COPD or COPD phenotype at the age of 35 years. Conclusions: EP-born subjects had widespread impairments in lung function outcomes, affecting both airways and alveolar components. Lung function deficits remained largely stable across three adult cohorts born in three defining decades of improving neonatal care, despite increasing survival of more vulnerable infants. Encouragingly, there were signs of improvements in expiratory flow rates with more recent birth decade, most prominent in the BPD subgroups. Close to half of EP-born adults born in the 1980s fit a pre-COPD or COPD phenotype by their fourth decade of life.Doktorgradsavhandlin

Depicting handshapes for animate referents in Swedish Sign Language

    Get PDF
In this article, we explore the distribution of handshapes used in depicting constructions (also known as classifier predicates) representing animate referents in Swedish Sign Language (STS). Using data from the STS Corpus, the analysis is focused on factors influencing the choice of handshape with regard to the 1-handshape vs 2-handshape variants, exploring their usage in different functions and contexts. The results demonstrate patterns in how signers use specific handshapes to depict motion and location events involving human(-like) and animal referents. The findings suggest that the event type, textual context and animacy of the depicted referent influence the choice between the 1- vs 2-handshape categories in STS, and that the 2-handshape category is used far more often than the former in our data. Furthermore, some of the analysed signs seem to have a limited depicting function in certain uses, suggesting possible grammaticalisation into a general [motion + VERB] construction, expressing an action being carried out at another location. The article contributes new insights into the nuanced use of handshapes in depicting constructions in STS and describes language-specific patterns in addition to pointing out cross-linguistic similarities/differences with regard to the expression of motion and location.publishedVersio
