    Tourists' perspectives of a tourism product in a selected Zimbabwean town

    Thesis (MTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.A well-packaged tourism product is the deciding factor in the choice of tourists about which destination to visit. A tourism product can be bundled with many tourism elements such as accommodation, attractions, activities and tours, price, image and climate. The tourism elements that build up a tourism product are the principle factors that contribute to the decision to choose one destination over another destination. Tourists can put a number of tourism products on the table, based on their needs and wants. However, they opt for one tourism product that promises to satisfy their demands. Destinations that offer unique tourism products are the most successful in a competitive industry since tourists will visit such destinations to fulfil their needs. However, even though some destinations like Victoria Falls offer unique tourism products, it is important to understand the nature and trends of tourists visiting this destination and their perceptions of the tourism product. This will assist in planning how to address any areas of concern as well as maintaining areas that are performing well. Limited research exists on tourist perspectives of the Victoria Falls tourism product and hence this is the focus of the current research. It will help in broadening the knowledge of the relevant tourism bodies in Zimbabwe on how tourists view the tourism product, as well as aiding sustainable development and growth of the tourism product. This study followed a quantitative methodology design. The interviewer administered 377 questionnaires on face-to-face basis to tourists on a voluntary participation basis. Systematic sampling was used to collect the data.Key findings indicate that despite the increasing number of females visiting this destination, males still dominate the tourist numbers. The majority of tourists fell within the age bracket of 21-50 years. The findings further show that availability of attractions, price of the tourism product, and accessibility of the destination play a paramount role in influencing tourists to visit the destination. Most tourists’ expectations were met and they would visit again in future and recommend the destination to friends and relatives. The most satisfactory results were noted on the attractions, activities, tours, and tourist accommodation. Despite these positive results, tourists felt that prices of accommodation, activities, tours, as well as dining, was too high. Furthermore, too many police roadblocks and unnecessary fines were noted as being detrimental to the tourism product. The researcher noted all concerns and made recommendations to overcome these negative aspects. The experience of tourists at a destination is strongly associated with an amalgamation of different elements of a tourism product. It is crucial to understand the performance of each tourism element as this contributes significantly to the success of the tourism product. The results of this study will afford the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority an understanding of the Victoria Falls tourism product from a tourist perspective. These entities will be able to improve the product, make it more attractive to tourists, and hence grow future visitor numbers. In addition, the results of this study create a baseline for future research. Monitoring of tourist perspectives over time and an evaluation and assessment of the tourist demands can be done, which will help in the modification and upgrading of the tourism product to match the demands of the consumers (tourists)

    The role of audit functions in enterprise resource planning projects in a selected organisation in South Africa

    Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems integrate business processes (BPs) into one database, facilitate data sharing, and provide real time information to authorised users, leading to an increase in efficiency and effectiveness. However, the implementation of an ERP system is not always a success as some systems turn out to be misaligned with the organisation’s objectives. This misalignment can lead to inadequate controls within the system. ERP systems are designed to improve transactions within the BPs and provide a competitive advantage to organisations. However, this benefit can become a weakness if project implementation fails due to controls in the system not being aligned with the objectives. The aim of the study is to explore how audit functions can contribute to the implementation of ERP projects, and the objective is to propose a guideline that can improve the implementation processes of ERP projects. To address the aim and meet the objective of this study, two main questions are asked: 1) What are the factors to be considered when introducing audit functionality in the implementation of an ERP system? 2) How can audit functions assist organisations in ERP project implementation? A subjectivist philosophical stance is followed and the epistemology lies within the interpretivist paradigm. An inductive research approach is followed and a case study is used as research strategy to conduct the research. The unit of analysis is the Operation Finance and Information Technology departments within the selected organisation, while selected employees (14) within the organisation form the unit of observation. A non-random, purposively selected sampling technique was used. Data were collected by means of semi-structured questionnaires through interviews. Data were analysed by summarising, categorising, and applying thematic analysis. The data analysis shows that audit functions (Operation Finance department, internal and external auditors) bring objectivity and assurance to the project in terms of financial reports, checks and balances, processes, structure, and internal controls. Getting people to cooperate however is a challenge for audit functionalities, and internal and external auditors can be a challenge during project implementation because their practical skills and computer-based knowledge to deal with huge volumes of data is extremely limited. It is highly recommended that the guideline presented in this research is followed, that engagement of audit functions with business processes is introduced and adopted by other role players involved in the project implementation process, and that audit functions should not be seen as a ‘must have’ but rather as support to improve the process.     World design capital 2014 opportunities for transforming business studies curricula

    Thesis (MTech (Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018This research explores whether any better ways of teaching and learning arose out of the interaction of the CPUT Faculty of Informatics and Design (FID) Design Department participation in the World Design Capital, Cape Town 2014 (WDC2014) projects. Activity Theory was the framework and methodology used to collect and analyse data. Semistructured interviews were conducted with nine design lecturers of the Industrial and Graphic Design departments of FID. The thesis was undertaken, as the researcher believes the present professional practice for design curriculum has not kept pace with the socio-economic realities of the 21st century, and that not enough has been done to overcome graduate unemployment and address the creation of one's own employment in the current circumstances. Economic realities and challenges are discussed along with innovative resilient and authentic academic learning ways to promote better learning for transitioning into the world of work. The Activity Theory framework was chosen in order to analyse the various interacting elements within the WDC2014 activity system, and was used for comparison with that of the existing professional practice curriculum activity system. From this analysis the tensions and contradictions within and between these two systems were uncovered, which showed possible areas for expansive learning and possible curriculum-useful learning opportunities that could be incorporated into the curriculum of the future. The work concludes with suggestions for further research into curriculum development for authentic learning, and the inclusion of multi-disciplinary curriculum developers for expansive learning within the classroom. The development of entrepreneurial approaches within any future curriculum also requires further examination

    Control of asphaltene precipitation and deposition during carbon dioxide flooding enhanced oil recovery

    Thesis (Master of Engineering (Chemical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018Pentane solvent among the two other solvents, hexane and heptane, had a greater ability to extract asphaltene from three crude oils − A, B and C − to precipitate it. The two solvent mixtures (Hexane 75 mL + Pentane 25 mL and 100 mL Pentane + 100 mL Hexane) had the abilities to extract greater yield of asphaltene content from the three different crude oils. Crude oils A and B were analysed to be paraffinic, meanwhile, crude oil C was found to be aromatic. The calculated average of asphaltene content in crude oil A on the ratio of 1:1 solvent-to-solvent mixture were 10.06 g/mL, crude oil B 10.06 g/mL and for crude oil C as 21.33 g/mL. When the solvent-to-solvent mixture ratio was 3:1 the average of the content in crude oil A was 11.8 g/mL, crude oil B 10.13 g/mL and crude oil C 22.65 g/mL. Lastly, the average asphaltene on the single ratio of paraffin solvent in three solvents in crude oil A was 6.86 g/mL, crude oil B 6.06 g/mL and crude oil C 22.73 g/mL. The asphaltene content from the extraction with the solvents was compared with the GC-MS, which further revealed that both analyses resulted in similar conclusions. While CO2 was found to be more influential in its injection in the crude oil, greater asphaltene contents were noted at a temperature of 25oC and lesser at 90oC in all three crude oil types. It can be appreciated that temperature plays a vital role in the process of CO2 flooding of crude oils. The decrease in the CO2-to-oil ratio had an increase in the asphaltene content, keeping the flow rate of the CO2 constant and increasing the amount of crude oil

    An improved plasma energy conversion system for electric power generation

    Thesis (PhD (Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.The generation of electricity through the conventional conversion system such as thermal and hydroelectric plants may no longer be sufficient to meet the increasing demands and usage. One of the major reasons for shortage supply of electric power is due to the lack of fossil fuel and other conventional resources that are currently being used in Africa. In addition, the conversion process of the conventional system often causes pollution which contributes to global warming. Therefore, there is a need for this research to develop novel and alternative methods of generating electric power. Among these methods is the Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) conversion system, which is a direct energy conversion system. In this system, plasma or ionised gas is directly converted into electric power with generating efficiency of about 62 %. The conversion process of the MHD system is based on the principle of Faraday’s Law of electromagnetism and fluid dynamics. The focus of the present study is to investigate alternative methods through which an MHD power generator can be coupled to the existing thermal plants in South Africa. In doing so, the thermal cycle efficiency of these conventional plants can be improved. Another goal of this study is to investigate the behaviour of an MHD generator prototype under exposure to plasma through simulation and experimentation in a laboratory setting

    The influence of supervisors on role stress, performance and job satisfaction in the retail food industry in the Cape Metropolitan area

    Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.This study examines and identifies evidence of employees’ perception of their supervisors’ influence on role stress, performance and job satisfaction. This study provides an opportunity to understand how the extent of influence is impacted by the elements of role stress: ambiguity and conflict, performance and job satisfaction. Evidence of employees’ perception was elicited using a quantitative survey instrument and administered to 300 respondents from participating stores. The responses were analysed using the Statistical package SPSS (version 19). The study found evidence of influence on elements of role stress (significant – ambiguity, but not-significant – conflict): with both job satisfaction and performance (significant). These findings contribute to the understanding of the perceived supervisor’s influence over role stress, job satisfaction and performance. The study concludes that although there is evidence of supervisor’s influence on role stress, performance and job satisfaction, the influence on role stress is balanced significantly between ambiguity and conflict compared to job satisfaction and performance. The role of employees is depending on the employees social and economic context and could determine ambiguity and conflict level without a supervisor. It would be incumbent on the supervisors to moderate their supervisory function according to the employee’s role and responsibility for an improved performance and satisfaction outcome

    Students’ perceptions of factors that contribute to drop-outs at a selected FET College in the Western Cape

    Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.This study investigates students’ perception of factors that contributed to dropouts at a selected FET college. Despite receiving government funding, drop-out continues to increase. An understanding of perceived factors influencing drop-out rate would help to develop and deploy retention strategy for FET college students. Previous studies on drop-out shows that students that have dropped out are more likely to be unemployed and living in poverty compared to those students that have successfully completed their programmes. In 2006 the Minister of Labour declared that FET Colleges in South Africa have a major role to play in assisting youth in gaining skills and thereby halving poverty and the unemployment rate by the year 2014. This declaration highlights the importance of FET colleges and amplifies the need for a strategy to maximise students’ retention and minimise drop-out rate. This study utilise a random sampling method to select respondents. Data were collected using a questionnaire with a quantitative approach and designed in a Likert scale format. The study was limited to students at West Coast FET College’s campuses namely: Atlantis, Vredenburg, Malmesbury and Citrusdal. One hundred and fifty students were used as respondents and data were gathered from the questionnaires. The findings derived from the data revealed that multiple factors are perceived to be the cause of high student dropout. These factors are lack of finances for transport and accommodation especially for the first years and social context of individual learners. The study concludes that although finance and social context of individual learner are perceived drop-out factors, other personal attributes like learners’ attitude to learning and commitment also plays a role in students drop-out and drop-out intention

    Tertiary biovalorisation of Grape pomace

    Thesis (Masters of Environmental Health)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.In the Western Cape, South Africa and other regions globally, grape pomace (GP) is one of the abundant agro-waste from the winery industry. This study reports on the hyper-extraction of fermentable sugars from GP treated with white rot fungi (WRF) Phanerochaete chrysosporium BKMF 1767 to facilitate improved biovalorisation for total reducing sugars (TRS) extraction in conjunction with Nepenthes mirabilis digestive fluids. TRS were quantified using the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) reagent method. The free readily dissolvable sugars from the GP recorded for the bio-treated (BT) samples was 206.39 ± 0.06 mg/L and for the untreated (UT) samples was 271.05 ± 0.02 mg/L. Overall, the TRS yield for the Bio-treated (BT) and untreated (UT) samples was recorded as 205.68 ± 0.09 and 380.93 ± 0.14 mg/L, respectively, using hot water pretreatment (HWP) with 2266.00 ± 0.73 (BT) and 2850.68 ± 0.31 mg/L (UT), respectively, for dilute acid pretreatment (DAP); with 2068.49 ± 6.02 (BT) and 2969.61 ± 8.054 mg/L (UT) respectively, using the cellulase pretreatment (CP) method. Using the HWP as a reference, the relative increases imparted by the biotreatment was higher (51%) for DAP and low (33%) for CP. The combination of conventional used pre-treatment methods (hot water pretreatment, dilute acid pre-treatment, and cellulase pre-treatment) in a single pot system was also done while monitoring the total residual phenolics (TRPCs) in the samples. Furthermore, powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) were used to measure the crystallinity index (CrI) and functional groups of pre- and post-pretreated GP to ascertain the efficiency of the pre-treatment methods, with quantification of lignin, holocellulose, and ash. Overall, the TRS yield for N. mirabilis pre-treated agro-waste was 951 mg/L ± 4.666 mg/L, with biomass having a lower CrI of 33%, and 62% residual lignin content. Furthermore, reduced TRPCs were observed in hydrolysate, suggesting limited inhibitory by-product formation during N. mirabilis pre-treatmen

Research studies show that millions of South Africans commuters are dependent on trains for daily movement activities, which significate contribute towards economic growth. Over the two decades, the exponential growth in wireless broadband service indicates the need for GSM-R improvement so that it can support the modern IP based protocol. The principle of implementing the digital network in railway already demonstrated significate improvement in the railway environment, especially in communication and signalling. Train traffic and train communications are the most critical aspects of railway scenarios due to safety and reliability. Both features form fundamental content to this research thesis. The exponential increase in Internet protocol (IP) based services and higher bandwidth requirements in modern technology applications have pushed the current Global system mobile for railway (GSM-R) technology to its maximum capacity as such the (GSM-R) platform is going to obsolete soon. There is a great need for the development of improved IP based networks for the future of the next generation network for fast smart trains to meet desired higher data low latency while improving quality of service (QoS). The focus of the research study is on modelling of an effective sharing method between public LTE and LTE-R without addition mobile infrastructure by utilizing train access unit (TAU), the main purpose is for public network (LTE) to handle railway emergency service including drop calls to improve quality of service (QoS). The second focus is an improvement of signal reception by spreading signals over wide spectrum range by utilizing Orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) technique where LTE-R is not deployed as noted that this technique is deployed in the 3G network. The proposed scheme has adopted features in modern evolution communication and both scenarios were investigated modelled and simulated with comparison results showing better improvement in proposed conditions, there are many challenges in high-speed railway such as handover procedure and Doppler shift due to the velocity of the moving train.LTE-R has provided many solutions such as seamless handover, capacity availability as well as enhanced performance in both uplink and downlink. Digital evolution for railway GSM-R has been deployed in most developed countries in Europe and also expanded into Africa, there is a greater need for the seamless network to be developed due to an increased number of packet based services. Urban rail is the backbone of public transport in South Africa which is the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). PRASA, and is the parent operator. Currently, PRASA has implemented digital railway network (GSM-R) to meet a high standard in railway. Modem demand and challenges require a cost-effective system to support IP orientated systems due to an increased number of packet-based services in the railway sectors

    Biosurfactant producing biofilms for the enhancement of nitrification and subsequent aerobic denitrification

    Thesis (Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.Wastewater treatment methods have always gravitated towards the use of biological methods for the treatment of domestic grey water. This has been proven to offer a series of advantages such as the reduction of pollution attributed to the use of synthetic chemicals; therefore, this decreases the requirement of further costly post primary treatment methods. Although such biological methods have been used for decades, their efficiency and sustainability has always been challenged by inhibitory toxicants which renders the systems redundant when these toxins are prevalent in high concentrations, culminating in the deactivation of biomass which facilitates the treatment. In most instances, this biomass is anaerobic sludge. Hence, the proposal to utilize biofilms which are ubiquitous and selfsustaining in nature. The use of engineered biofilms in wastewater treatment and their behaviour has been studied extensively, with current research studies focusing on reducing plant footprint, energy intensity and minimal usage of supplementary synthetic chemicals. An example of such processes include traditional nitrification and denitrification systems, which are currently developed as simultaneous nitrification and aerobic denitrification systems, i.e. in a single stage system, from the historical two stage systems. However, there is limited literature on biofilm robustness against a potpourri of toxicants commonly found in wastewater; particularly for total nitrogen removal systems such as simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). This study was undertaken (aim) to assess the ability of biosurfactant producing biofilms in the removal of total nitrogen in the presence of toxicants, i.e. heavy metals and phenol, as biosurfactants have been proven to facilitate better mass transfer for pollutant mitigation. Unlike in conventional studies, the assessment of biosurfactant producers in total nitrogen removal was assessed in both planktonic and biofilm state. Since biofilms are known to have increased tolerance to toxic environmental conditions, they were developed thus engineered using microorganisms isolated from various sources, mainly waste material including wastewater as suggested in literature reviewed, to harness microorganisms’ possessing specified traits that can be developed when organisms are growing under strenuous environments whereby they are tolerant to toxic compounds. The assessment of these engineered biofilms involved the development from individual microorganisms to form biofilms in 1L batch reactors where the isolated microorganisms were grown in basal media containing immobilisation surfaces. The assessment of the total nitrogen efficiency was conducted using Erlenmeyer flasks (500mL) in a shaker incubator, with the biofilm TN removal efficiency being assessed in batch systems to ascertain simultaneous nitrification and denitrification rates even in the presence of heavy metals (Cu2+, Zn2+) and C6H5OH. Ambient temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions were kept constant throughout the duration of biofilm development with microorganisms (initially n = 20) being isolated for the initiation of biosurfactant studies which included screening. Results indicated that the engineered biofilms, constituted by biosurfactant producing organisms (n = 9), were consisiting of bacteria (97.19%), Protozoa (2.81%) and Archaea (0.1%) as identified using metagenomics methods. Some of the biosurfactant produced had the following functional group characteristics as determined by FTIR: -CH3-CH2, deformed NH, -CH3 amide bond, C-O, C=O, O-C-O of carboxylic acids, and C-O-C of polysaccharides. Other selected microorganisms (n = 5) tolerated maximum concentrations of the selected toxicants (Cu2+, Zn2+ and C6H5OH) of 2400 mg/L, 1800 mg/L and 850 mg/L, respectively. Enzyme analysis of the total nitrogen removal experiments indicated a higher nitrogen removal rate to be the Alcanigene sp. at 180 mg/L/h
