Landscapes of conversion: the evolution of the residential school sites at Wiikwemkoong and Spanish, Ontario
This thesis explores the history of the Society of Jesus and its efforts at missionary work
from the 17th century in New France to the 20th century in Canada and the use of architecture
and landscape development to settle and convert Indigenous peoples into Euro-Christian
communities. The Jesuits focused on using Indigenous children to aid in the conversion of
Indigenous societies and their efforts resulted in the residential school complexes of the 19th and
20th century in the villages of Wiikwemkoong and Spanish, Ontario. Using illustrations,
photographs and written descriptions of former student experiences the atmosphere of the
physical environments in Spanish are depicted. The ambitious land and architecture strategies of
the Society contributed to the failure of the Spanish Indian Residential Schools. The thesis
concludes with a discussion regarding the former sites of the Jesuit residential schools in
Northern Ontario and the current discourse on Canadian residential school buildings and sites in
the media
Psychopathy and alcohol abuse in relation to the recidivism of sexual offenders
The abuse of alcohol is a fundamental component to consider when assessing the risk of
reoffending in sexual offenders. Previous research with sexual offenders has demonstrated that
being diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder almost doubles their chance of reoffending. While
there has been much research on alcoholism and sexual offenders, there remains a gap in
literature considering the impact of alcohol abuse and drug abuse with psychopathic sexual
offenders. A review article briefly indicated that elevated scores on the Michigan Alcohol
Screening Test (MAST) might moderate the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R)
ability to predict recidivism. No, follow up study was discovered to observe further results. The
current study evaluated the impact of these findings using a long-term recidivism database
collected in the Ontario Region of Correction Service Canada (CSC). The database included over
500 high-risk sexual offenders from the Regional Treatment Center, Sex Offender Treatment
Program (RTCSOTP). The database contained information on men, over 18 years of age, who
had served at least two years in custody for a sexual offense. The PCL-R, MAST, and DAST
were utilized to measure psychopathy, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse, respectively. A Cox
regression analysis revealed that the PCL-R and the DAST were significant predictors of sexual
and violent recidivism, but the MAST was not a significant predictor of sexual and violent
recidivism. The MAST did not impact the PCL-R’s capability of predicting recidivism in a
moderate to high-risk sample, as previously observed. While the result of non-significant MAST
prediction was contrary to previous findings, these results indicate that targeting drug abuse
should continue to be a component in sexual offender treatment programs. Alcohol abuse cannot
be excluded definitively from the study of recidivism
Leading competitor masters athletes: identities and the road to success
This project sought to explore identities used by leading competitor master level runners
in order for them to continue down the road of success. The following research question was
explored: How do leading competitor masters level long distance runners describe their life as a
runner, in relation to today, and the context they are training in? The participants were three
leading competitor master level athletes (age 50+), who all reside in Sudbury, Ontario. Artefacts
brought the project to a deeper level. An inductive thematic analysis was carried out. Themes
and sub-themes highlighted specific ways each masters’ athlete navigated their running journey
to allow them to maintain their competitiveness as a leading competitor. In conclusion, the study
discussed the importance of the athletic identity: how it functioned, shifted, and changed over
time to allow the athletes to navigate their other identities and go through processes such as
identity management
Real-time static gesture detection using machine learning
Sign gesture recognition is an important problem in human-computer interaction with significant
societal influence. However, it is a very complicated task, since sign gestures are naturally
deformable objects. Gesture recognition contains unsolved problems for the last two decades,
such as low accuracy or low speed, and despite many proposed methods, no perfect result has
been found to explain these unsolved problems. In this thesis, we suggest a machine learning
approach to translating sign gesture language into text.
In this study, we have introduced a self-generated image data set for American Sign Language
(ASL). This dataset is a collection of 36 characters containing alphabets A to Z and numeric
digits 0 to 9. The proposed system can recognize static gestures. This system can learn and
classify specific sign gesture of any person. We used a convolutional neural network (CNN)
algorithm for the classification of the images to text. An accuracy of 99.00% was achieved on the
alphabet gestures and 100% accuracy on digits
A framework to develop a hybrid methodology for modeling of diesel particulate matter concentration in underground mine ventilation systems
The purpose of this research is to develop a hybrid methodology for diesel particulate matter (DPM)
modeling for underground mine ventilation systems. The hybrid methodology, which is an
enhanced and complementary tool, is proposed to provide improved diesel input to a ventilation
network solver by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver. The hybrid methodology
uses the DPM results from a calibrated CFD model to update those from a network model at shared
locations. A CFD approach for simulating DPM over an extended period has been proposed to
make the hybrid methodology more adaptable to large ventilation systems. With the proposed CFD
modeling approach, contaminants like DPM can be modeled accurately in a timely manner over
an extended period of time. The results from this approach are then used to update the network
model results at the shared outlets. The workflow to update DPM results from the network model
using the calibrated CFD model is presented.
Two field studies were conducted in an underground mine in the western United States. Due to the
low quality airflow and DPM data collected from the field, this study should be viewed as a
qualitative study rather than a quantitative study. Corresponding CFD models, ventilation network
models, and updated ventilation models were also established, and results from these models were
compared with the experimental data. The limitations for both the instruments and the
methodology were defined as well
Le systéme d’encadrement pédagogique des futurs enseignants d’eps: une lecture de la gestion des rétroactions des inspections pédagogiques à l’injeps/Bénin
Le but de cette recherche est d’analyser le système d’encadrement
pédagogique des étudiants en Sciences et Techniques des Activités Physiques
et Sportives (STAPS) en formation initiale à l’Institut National de la Jeunesse,
de l’Éducation Physique et des Sports (INJEPS) lors de leurs stages dans des
établissements d’enseignement secondaire. À partir d’une grille de lecture
composée du modèle systémique du processus d’intervention de Dunkin et
Biddle (1974) et celui de Chevallard (1992), cette étude problématise d’une
part, le fait didactique à partir des variables de contexte, de programme, de
processus et de produit, et d’autre part du concept de praxéologie. Par ailleurs,
elle cherche aussi à comprendre les variables déterminantes au processus de
supervision pédagogique et la manière dont l’INJEPS gère les feedbacks
produits par les superviseurs pédagogiques de l’INJEPS et de la Direction de
l’Inspection Pédagogique. Il ressort, de l’analyse des résultats des
investigations, que les superviseurs pédagogiques des deux institutions
mettent essentiellement l’accent sur les variables de contexte, de processus et
de produit lors de l’encadrement pédagogique des stagiaires de 3ème , 4ème
et 5ème année, alors que les variables de programme aussi sont prises en
compte en 1ère et 2ème année. A l’issue des supervisions, seules les notes de stage produites par les rapports pédagogiques des superviseurs sont prises en
compte par l’administration lors des évaluations partielles et terminales des
étudiants. Aucun traitement didactique des contenus des feedbacks n’est fait
dans la perspective d’améliorer la formation pédagogique des futurs
enseignants
Planting the seeds: envisioning an academic pathway for Indigenous students in rural Northern Ontario
My research examined how Indigenous students chose their post-secondary educational
academic pathway, specifically the timing, type and amount information Indigenous students had
prior to being enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs at Laurentian University,
Sudbury, Ontario. This study utilized an Indigenous research methodology and quantitative
method with a few qualitative questions using REDCap online survey. The research found that
while current Laurentian Indigenous students had multiple pathways prior to enrollment at the
university level, the results also found that earlier outreach might one of the strategies to closing
the educational attainment gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students at the postsecondary level. The study also revealed a need for Laurentian University to form close
relationships with Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario to allow potential future students
a way of envisioning the benefits and opportunities of their education pathway
Assessing the extent of local assimilation within the Platreef, Northern Limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, using sulfur isotopes and trace element geochemistry
The proximity to metasedimentary footwall units in the Northern Limb of the Bushveld
Igneous Complex (BIC) has resulted in a complex local contamination of in this maficultramafic intrusive body, including the units containing platinum group element (PGE)
mineralization. To assess the extent of incorporation of non-magmatic material and its effects on
PGE mineralization, geochemical and isotopic data were collected from drill core UMT094 on
the Turfspruit project, where core logging has shown a clear macroscopic division between
mineralization and local footwall contamination. The S isotopic data combined with whole rock
geochemistry data (including CaO/Al2O3, V/Ti, Ni/Cr, S/Se, LOI) present substantial evidence to
assess the range of incorporation of local footwall material. A δ34SVCDT profile shows a steady
decrease from the footwall assimilation zone (δ34S = +8 ‰) to near constant δ34S values (δ34S <
+4 ‰) below mineralization. Through PGE mineralization, the δ34S data converge to the range
that has been documented for the Merensky Reef in the Eastern and Western Limbs of the BIC
(δ34S: ~ 0 to +3 ‰). Other geochemical parameters through mineralization, such as S/Se and
CaO/Al2O3, also match the ranges documented for the Merensky Reef. In addition, parameters
such as whole rock V/Ti are shown to be useful indicators of the type of contaminant (e.g. V/Ti >
2 for intervals assimilating shales and V/Ti < 1 for intervals assimilating carbonates; 1 < V/Ti <
2 for uncontaminated magmatic units). The results indicate that there is negligible local
contamination through mineralization and that the primary mechanism of PGE mineralization in
the Platreef was no different than the mechanism that generated the Merensky Reef in the
Eastern and Western limbs of the BIC
Volcanic reconstruction of the paleoproterozoic powderhouse formation, Snow Lake, Manitoba, Canada: implications for controls on volcanogenic massive sulfide formation
The Powderhouse formation of the Paleoproterozoic Snow Lake arc assemblage comprises the
stratigraphic footwall to six volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (VMS) at Snow Lake,
Manitoba, Canada. It is interpreted to be a product of voluminous pyroclastic eruptions and
concomitant subsidence followed by a period of relative volcanic quiescence that was dominated
by suspension sedimentation, the reworking of these previously deposited pyroclastic units by
debris flows and bottom currents, and localized emplacement of rhyolite domes. The rhyolite
domes are spatially associated with the Chisel, Chisel North, Lost, Ghost, Photo and Lalor
deposits.
The Chisel, Lalor and Lost members comprise the Powderhouse formation and are
subdivided into thirteen lithologically and chemically distinct lithofacies and allows, for the first
time, correlation between the South Chisel basin and Lalor area. The Chisel and Lalor members
contain lithofacies and bedforms that are characteristic of emplacement by subaqueous
pyroclastic mass flows and concomitant subsidence. The Chisel member also contains coarse
volcaniclastic breccias emplaced by mass debris flows derived from movement along fault scarps
after early pyroclastic eruptions, and during continued subsidence. The Lost member consists of
lithofacies deposited by mass flows generated from faults scraps during continued subsidence,
but also contains lithofacies reworked by bottom currents and those deposited by suspension
sedimentation, and locally coherent rhyolite. The Lost member represents a time stratigraphic
interval, the “Ore Interval”, that marks contemporaneous rhyolite dome eruption, VMS
formation, and a hiatus in explosive volcanism
Emplacement of sharp-walled sulphide veins during reactivation of impact-related structures at the Broken Hammer Mine, Sudbury, Ontario
Broken Hammer is a hybrid, Cu-Ni-Platinum Group Element (PGE) footwall deposit in the North
Range of the ca. 1.85 Ga Sudbury impact structure. The sulphide vein system and associated low
sulphide PGE mineralization were mined as an open pit operation over a 15-month period,
providing a unique opportunity to study a complete 90-meter vertical section across a footwall
deposit. The deposit is hosted within Archean basement rocks and impact-induced Sudbury
breccia, 1.5 km north of the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) – basement contact. The low sulphide
mineralization consists of disseminated to blebby chalcopyrite (<5%), minor pyrite, chalcocite,
galena, sphalerite and platinum group minerals, associated with Ni-bearing chlorite overprinting
alteration patches of epidote, actinolite and quartz. The veins comprise massive chalcopyrite and
minor magnetite, chalcocite, millerite, and rare sperrylite, surrounded by thin epidote, actinolite
and quartz selvedges. They are grouped into five, steeply-dipping, NE-, SW-, SE-, S- and EWstriking sets, which intersect in a common line controlling the plunge (60°) and trend (220°) of ore
shoots. The veins were emplaced along syn-impact fractures that were reactivated multiple times
during stabilization of the impact crater floor. Early reactivation of the fractures created pathways
for the migration of hydrothermal fluids from which quartz and chlorite precipitated sealing the
fractures. Renewed slip and reactivation shattered the quartz-chlorite veins into fragments that
were incorporated in massive sulphide veins that crystallized from strongly fractionated sulphide
melts or high temperature (400°C-500°C) hydrothermal fluids which migrated outward into the
basement rocks from a cooling and crystallizing impact melt sheet represented by the SIC.
Hydrothermal fluids syn-genetic with the epidote-actinolite-quartz alteration distributed the PGE
into the footwall rocks, or late hydrothermal fluids associated with the Ni-bearing chlorite leached
Ni and PGM’s from the sulphide veins and re-distributed them within the footwall rocks, forming the low-sulphide high-PGE mineralization. During post-impact tectonic events, reactivation and
slip at temperatures below the brittle-ductile transition for chalcopyrite (<200°C-250°C) produced
striations along the vein margins. The Broken Hammer deposit exemplifies how Cu-Ni-PGE
footwall deposits formed by the reactivation of syn-impact fractures that provided conduits for the
migration of melts and hydrothermal fluids
