    Kingston Health Sciences Centre is committed to using three family therapy modalities with their clients at the Child and Youth Mental Health Clinic. Ecosystemic Structural Family Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy are evidenced-based interventions, sometimes used as the sole method of therapy, but often times as an adjunct to other techniques for children and youth afflicted with mental health challenges.     Expressive arts therapy in support groups for bereaved adults in a hospice setting

    Expressive Arts Therapies (EXAT) may be seen as a new practice but can be traced back to the very beginnings of human existence and have been found on all continents and within most cultures around the world. Since earliest recordings of man, art-making has been used to make amends, rehabilitate, and transform a person in holistic ways affecting the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person leading to health and overall wellbeing. EXAT can combine the visual arts, movement, drama, music, writing, and other creative processes to foster deep personal growth and community development. EXAT can also be a guided spiritual journey and process-oriented intervention with the role of the therapist as the guide into a safe space for the client to experience integration of the arts. These approaches are convergent with social work practice, which requires creative problem solving, whereby creativity is used effectively to shape, mold, influence and uncover unrealized potential in clients. Expressive Arts Therapy also aligns with social work practice in its theoretical underpinnings, stemming from humanistic, clientcentered perspectives. The advanced practicum described herein involved an 8-week Expressive Arts course followed by facilitation of two bereavement support groups in hospice using Expressive Arts Therapy. Some of the Expressive Arts themes explored during the 8-week course and then implemented within bereavement support groups in hospice included: Introduction to Expressive Arts; Exploring Relationships; Stories from the Field; Expressive Arts Modalities; Mindful Music and Movement in Expressive Arts; Planning Expressive Arts Experiences; Professional Issues within Expressive Arts; Sand Tray; and Writing within Expressive Arts. EXAT can be a very effective therapeutic approach in support of those grieving the death of a loved one. With the knowledge, skills, and experience I have gained throughout this advanced practicum, I will be able to confidently incorporate EXAT into my practice when working with individuals, groups, and communities. Whether supporting bereaved individuals or facilitating bereavement groups, or holding memorial services in the community, EXAT is an effective process legitimized by evidence-based research, supporting clients as they participate in the creative process that can lead to positive change and emancipation. Expressive arts can be integrated into social work as complementary or alternative forms of expression, therapy, and healing aimed at individual and group change and among many populations in support of a wide array of issues. In combining art and activism, social workers using expressive arts can draw public attention to many issues of social concern.     Fungal community dynamics and carbon mineralization in Populus tremuloides, Picea mariana, and Pinus banksiana coarse woody debris in two ecoregions of northern Ontario

    In Canadian silvicultural systems, intensifying biomass removal while harvesting for saw or pulpwood is presently the only economically feasible way of increasing biomass feedstocks. As a result, there is less slash and subsequently less coarse woody debris (CWD) pools in different decay stages over time. The impacts on saproxylic fungi and ecosystem functioning are not well understood. Fungi are the primary agents of CWD decay in forests, playing essential roles in nutrient cycling and carbon storage. We compared fungal biodiversity and CWD mineralization across 3 CWD species (Pinus banksiana, Populus tremuloides, and Picea mariana), 5 decay classes, and 2 ecoregions representing 3W and 3E Ontario. Fungal diversity metrics and community structure were examined via high-throughput sequencing of the ITS2 region. CWD pieces were incubated in a temperature controlled lab setting and C mineralization rates measured. Moisture content, density, and nutrient dynamics, including C, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Mn concentrations, C:N ratio, and N:P ratio of CWD were assessed. Fungal communities significantly differed among CWD species, decay class, and ecoregion and were primarily correlated with Ca, Mn, and K concentrations, density, and C:N ratio. Species richness and diversity peaked in 3W Ontario and in decay classes 4 and 5. We observed a shift from pathogenic, colonizer fungi to an increased abundance of wood decay fungi as decay class increased. Hardwood CWD had higher abundances of white rot fungi than softwood CWD. C mineralization was higher in hardwood CWD, increased with decay class, and was primarily influenced by P concentration and density. Data from this study will be used in developing forest management strategies to preserve biodiversity and monitor carbon flux in northern boreal forests, particularly under intensified-bioenergy production silvicultural systems

    Dynamic stability of the human body during unstable pushups

    Instability training provides the nervous system with a greater challenge than traditional training, and thus can be performed with a reduced external load, potentially reducing the likelihood of injury. Unstable exercises have also been found to elicit higher levels of core muscle activity than their stable counterparts and so may increase joint loading. The degree to which instability challenges the stability of the human body likely relies on the level of instability of the movement, but the influence of experimental instability, and its effect on the level of stability of the human body, has yet to be determined. This study aims to examine how altering the available degrees of freedom of the pushup, as a means of quantifying instability, may affect the dynamic stability of the lumbar spine. The results of this study indicate that adding two available degrees of freedom to the conventional pushup significantly increases kinematic variance of the L1 vertebra through 3-dimensional space. No significant difference in kinematic variability existed between the two conditions of additional available degrees of freedom. These results may help health care professionals improve the individualization of their training programs by taking desired level of instability into account, and adjusting available degrees of freedom accordingly

    La pensée critique en éducation physique et sportive : ce qu’en pensent les futurs enseignants d’EPS de l’ISEPS de Brazzaville en République du Congo

    La présente étude a pour but de comprendre la perception des étudiant(e)s en formation initiale à l’égard de la nature et du rôle de la pensée critique en classe d’EPS. Trente (30) futurs enseignant(e)s en formation initiale à l’Institut Supérieur d’Éducation Physique et Sportive (ISEPS) en République du Congo ont répondu à un questionnaire d’une dizaine de questions semi-ouvertes. L’analyse du contenu des réponses a été faite selon un cadre théorique composé de la conception de la pensée critique de Lipman (1995/2006). Les résultats révèlent l’existence de plusieurs conceptions de la nature de la pensée critique, tous considérant la pensée critique comme une habileté cognitive de niveau supérieur au service d’un meilleur apprentissage. Quant au rôle de la pensée critique, neuf (9) conceptions ont été évoquées, toutes attribuant à la pensée critique une fonction instrumentale en EPS

    Deformation history and gold mineralization of the Cadillac Group north of the Larder Lake-Cadillac deformation zone, southern Abitibi greenstone belt, Quebec

    The Cadillac Group is located immediately north of the Larder Lake–Cadillac deformation zone (LLCDZ) along the southern margin of the Abitibi greenstone belt in the Archean Superior Province, Quebec. The LLCDZ is a major 250 km long structure known for hosting several gold deposits. It is generally east-trending over a distance of 170 km, and then it swings to the southeast over a distance of 35 km along the so-called Malartic segment, before resuming its easterly trend for another 45 km. With its thick sequence of <2687 Ma turbiditic sandstone interlayered with mudstone and polymictic conglomerate, the Cadillac Group provides favourable rocks for studying the structural history of the Malartic segment which, due to its unique trend, is important for understanding the overall tectonic evolution of the LLCDZ. Deformation of the Cadillac Group began with large-scale isoclinal folding and the formation of a regional cleavage parallel to the trend of the Malartic segment (D1 event). These structures overprint a 2675.5 ± 2 Ma quartzfeldspar-phyric (QFP) intrusion providing a maximum age for the D1 event and a minimum age for the deposition of the Cadillac sequence. The deformation of the Cadillac Group resumed with bedding-parallel sinistral shearing and the emplacement of gold-bearing extensional quartz veins (D2 event), and continued with bedding-parallel dextral shearing, Z-shaped folding, the formation of a cleavage oriented oblique (anticlockwise) to the trend of the Malartic segment, and by the rotation and segmentation of the gold-bearing veins (D3 event). Contrary to previous interpretations of the Malartic segment as an early pre-D1 accretionary structure, it is interpreted as the short limb of a broad Z-shaped flexure that formed during D3 folding of the LLCDZ and that postdates the emplacement of gold-bearing veins in the Cadillac Group. Mineralized veins at the nearby worldclass Canadian Malartic deposit were emplaced during the same D2 event but they differ in alteration mineralogy and geochemistry to the Cadillac veins suggesting different sources for the mineralizing fluids. Mineralization at the Lapa deposit is similar in sulphide mineralogy and metal association to the Cadillac veins but was emplaced earlier during the deformation history of the LLCDZ

    The interaction among hydrogen sulfide, estrogen and insulin-like growth factor-1 in vascular smooth muscle cells

    The proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is regulated by an array of endogenous substances, including estrogen, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Estrogen inhibits SMC proliferation via the activation of estrogen receptor-α (ER- α), but it stimulates the same in the absence of endogenous H2S. IGF-1, via its receptor (IGF- 1R), stimulates SMC proliferation and migration. ER-α and IGF-1R can form hybrid dimer with both ER and IGF-1 as the binding ligands. Furthermore, H2S produced by cystathionine-gamma lyase (CSE) inhibits SMC proliferation. It appears that the interaction and integration of the vascular effects of estrogen, IGF-1, and H2S determine the outcome of the proliferation of SMCs. In this thesis study, we found that plasma estrogen levels were significantly lower in female CSE knockout (KO) mice than in female wide-type (WT) mice. Estrogen treatment of atherogenic diet-fed mice attenuated hypercholesterolemia, oxidative stress, intracellular adhesion molecule-1 and NF-κB expression and increased H2S production in WT mice but not in CSE- KO mice. Not only estrogen and H2S affects each other’s production and function, H2S also interacts with IGF-1 to inhibit the stimulatory effect of IGF-1 on SMCs proliferation. This inhibitory effect of H2S was abolished by blocking IGF-1/IGF-1R signaling pathway. On the other hand, estrogen downregulated the protein expressions of IGF-1 and IGF-1R in mouse aortic tissues or aortic SMCs. Deficiency of IGF-1R expression or lower IGF-1R activity abolished the stimulatory effect of estrogen on the proliferation of CSE-KO SMCs. ER-α and IGF-1R were co-located on cell membrane and co-immunoprecipitated. The binding of estrogen to IGF-1R/ER-α hybrid catalyzed the stimulatory effect on SMC proliferation. Finally, H2S induced the S-sulfhydration of IGF-1R, but not ER-α, in mouse SMCs, which lead to the decreased formation of IGF-1R/ER-α hybrid. This decrease inhibited the phosphorylation of IGF-1R, and attenuated estrogen-induced SMC proliferation. It is concluded that the antiatherosclerotic effect of estrogen is mediated by CSEgenerated H2S. The absence of H2S favors the interaction of estrogen with IGF-1R/ER-α hybrid to stimulate SMC proliferation whereas the presence of H2S favors the interaction of estrogen with ER-α to inhibit SMC proliferation. Our studies demonstrate that H2S reverses the proproliferative effect of estrogen on SMCs and unmasks the dominative anti-atherosclerotic effect of estrogen. The appreciation of the critical role of H2S in the cardiovascular effects of estrogen and IGF-1 will help better understand the regulation of the complex vascular effects of estrogen and sex-related cardiovascular disease
