An exploration of interprofessional education in four Canadian undergraduate nursing programs
Formal inclusion of interprofessional education (IPE) curricula within Canadian undergraduate nursing programs has been occurring since 2012. While there is evidence that Canadian university nursing programs are working to achieve the integration of IPE throughout undergraduate curricula, a gap exists in what is known about IPE integration in Northern Ontario nursing programs, particularly from the perspectives of faculty members and program administrators. This multiple case study explored how four undergraduate university nursing programs in Northern Ontario integrated IPE into their curricula, including the opportunities and challenges of this work. Program experiences were explored within, and across, four undergraduate nursing programs located in Sudbury (including both English language and French language programs), Thunder Bay, and North Bay. Data acquisition strategies consisted of interviews with program directors (n=3), focus groups (n=10) and interviews (n=3) with faculty members, review of available program documentation and websites, and on-site program observations. Thematic analysis was undertaken for each case and during the cross-case analysis stage. The cross-case synthesis resulted in the following themes: 1) varied understandings of IPE, 2) diverse IPE learning activities within curricula, 3) the requirement for support and resources for IPE and research, 4) student participation and leadership in IPE, and 5) limited IPE evaluation. These results highlight IPE practices within these nursing programs and what supports them. Faculty development, IPE research, student involvement, and administrative support are required to maintain and sustain IPE. Dissemination of results may encourage further research and dialogue on current IPE practices among nursing programs in Northern Ontario and beyond
A rhythmic approach to temporal architecture ideation and creation
Temporality is inherently how any living being experiences existence, however when it comes to the
design of the built environment the it seems to be one of the last things considered when designing.
The interval of time has untapped potential to manifest and represent the phenomenon, creating
spaces that consider how we move through space. To understand the how to begin to work with the
interval of time, a thorough study into Etienne-Jules Marey conducted. Marey was a French inventor
who dedicated his life to uncovering the mysteries of movement through chronophotography.
Marey’s contemporary Eadweard Muybridge followed a similar career path with a focus on recreating
movement through cinema. Both methods influence how to move forward with implementing
temporality into a design process.
The study of movement is also essential to the topic of displacement over time. The speeds at which
movement occurs, and where it occurs can have massive repercussions on a site. Paul Virilio, A French
philosopher wrote about the politics of speed, and through his study of how cities change, comparing
the movement within to an engine. His study is integral to understanding how cities change over time.
Greater Sudbury was chosen as a city to study in regards to interval and speed due to its unique nature.
Sudbury is made of man smaller cities and towns that are all connected by highways, challenging the
typical grid format. This creates a unique problem of having a desolate town center since each smaller
town has their own center, while the greater city has no common crossing point between them. To
combat this issue a transport nexus is proposed to unify methods of transportation across Greater
Sudbury to create one common place of intersection at the city’s core. In addition to the nexus, a
market is proposed to create a program rich environment that encourages interaction and exploration.
This intent is to increase the daily traffic through what would be the new city center, while manifesting
the interval of time within the buildings.
The methodology conducted to reach the desired outcome is a series of iterative and cyclical processes
that challenge traditional design work flows to encourage a focus on designing for temporality as
much as it does spatially. Starting with digital collage and eventually ending with projection; the work
conducted demonstrates a nonlinear work flow through play to manifest architecture that is both
practical and imbued with temporal essence
Exploring participants’ experiences in an arts-based bereavement support group for traumatic and/or unexpected losses
Our understanding of grief has shifted in recent years, resulting in a call for international research
in the areas of grief and bereavement, and in identifying effective supports and interventions for
those who are mourning. Individuals who lose a loved one to traumatic and/or unexpected causes
(unnatural events such as overdoses, suicides, car accidents, violent crimes) often face some
specific challenges in their grieving journey, are at higher risk for experiencing complicated grief..
Some recent research has identified the usefulness of arts-based interventions in supporting those
who are bereaved. Bereaved individuals participating in arts-based methods may receive support
through art-making and engaging in the creative process itself, as well as through meaning-making
opportunities in metaphoric communication related to loss, and through memorialisation of one’s
relationship with the deceased. The study described herein utilizes a qualitative research process
and thematic analysis to explore the experiences of participants in Northern Ontario in an artsbased bereavement support group for traumatic and/or unexpected losses. Four main themes
emerged from the data (1) exploring new territory (2) travelling together (3) crossing the borders,
and (4) getting somewhere. Collectively, the participants herein described their experience in the
group as being helpful in their personal grief journeys, in their understanding of themselves, and/or
in making meanings in relation to their loss(s). Several participants in the study expressed signs of
growth, making statements specifically attributing this growth to their participation in the group.
The findings in this study provide a rich and in-depth exploration of five individuals’ experiences
in an arts-based supportive group for traumatic losses, adding to a limited body of literature on the

Serendipitous spaces: discovery in the contemporary library
Contemporary public libraries serve as a conduit between sources of
knowledge and the public. They are not only a repository of knowledge
but also a community hub that facilitates, creates and disseminates this
information. These libraries are democratic institutions that enable and
advocate for free access of information for everyone, where ‘information’
goes beyond physical collections to include digital formats, live events
(lectures and workshops) and learning through making.
In contemporary public libraries, the interaction between people
and information is vital to their success, as a library without people is
essentially a storage room. This thesis proposes the design of a new
public library for Sudbury that encourages discovery and elicits curiosity
as a method of improving connections between people and knowledge
stored in the library. Through the careful organization of the library’s
program, the decentralized approach to stored knowledge, and the
removal of spatial barriers, the library’s architecture promotes browsing,
wandering and ultimately discovering all the library has to offe

favoriser l’apprentissage et le bien-être des élèves du
Nord de l’Ontario. Une revue de la littérature, des sessions
d’engagement avec des professionnels en éducation, ainsi
que des études de cas et des visites d’écoles inspirantes
ont permis d’identifier les besoins et priorités actuels en
termes d’éducation, ainsi que les solutions architecturales
mises en œuvre pour y répondre. La thèse se concentre
sur quatre aspects qui se trouvent au cœur de l’atteinte
du bien-être, soit le confort physique, l’activité physique,
la connexion à la nature et la collaboration. Par un projet
d’établissement scolaire regroupant des institutions de
différentes langues et niveaux dans la municipalité Blind
River, elle soutient l’argument que des interventions
architecturales développées autour de l’idée du parcours
permettent de répondre de façon originale et synergique

Crafting design: translating haute couture craft productions into architectural design
The notion and practice of ‘craft’ is present
in all cultures, and in its broadest compass,
reflects the human desire to manifest subjective
aspirations through matter. As a concept, it
beholds a complexity that extends far beyond the
vague definition of ‘skillful making.’ Preceding all
recognized disciplines, the historical development
of craft suggests a common embodied identity that
is inherently engrained within our very individual
framework. Several theorists recognize that there is
great validity in craft methodologies, ranging from
deep knowledge of materials to the relationships
between making and ethical and moral awareness.
Good architecture calls for this existential wisdom,
highlighting the relevance and necessity for such
discussions.
Through the derived and adapted knowledge of
related design industries, architecture strengthens
its understanding of human conditions and needs.
Haute couture, an accredited sector within the
fashion industry shows many similarities to
architecture. Considering clothing as artifacts
that are more than a response to functional
requirements, haute couture exercises the design
and creation of custom-made objects within the
context of a strict and controlled professional
environment. The design of haute couture garments
and accessories revolves around proportions of
the human body, and often reflects the cultural
and stylistic priorities of its time. Beyond these
surface-level similarities, however, both architecture
and haute couture operate at the nexus of
high-quality design and craft. Despite the many
parallels, fashion is often not recognized as a
socially valuable practice, especially in association
with a heroic discipline such as architecture.
Concluding in the architectural manifestation of Le
Musée des Métiers de la Haute Couture, this thesis
will expose the craft productions of haute couture to
the general public of Paris, revealing and curating
the making of the artifact. Considering analogical
operations as part of the design process (Chupin,
2010), this dissertation extracts understandings of
craft principles from the discipline of haute couture
and translates the findings into an architectural
design, resulting in a dialogue between the two
disciplines. Synthesizing these similarities unveils
parallels, as well as differences, which encourages a
critical questioning of the contemporary approach to
architecture.
The structure of this thesis commences with
interpretations of fundamental texts that probe
the notion of craft. Comprehending the hand
as a thinking entity (Pallasmaa, 2009), craft as
a cultural phenomenon (McEwen, 1993), and
architecture as an interdisciplinary art form (Trasi,
2001) serves to define the design process of this
thesis project that is anchored in the craft of haute
couture. Recognizing craft as a means of material
consciousness and moral awareness (Sennett,
2008) that, by consequence, is imperative in the
creation of meaningful architecture, will emphasize
the necessity for this dialogue. In search of fresh
perspectives, the thesis puts forth three main
analogical operations for the design of the building:
between the pleat and the structure, the seam and
the connections, and embroidery and superimposed
ornamentation. These analogical operations between
fashion and architecture are explored concurrently
through the materialization of a full-scaled
garment and the design of the building. This thesis
project offers a critical proposal for how we might
strengthen the process of architectural design in the
technological age
Genesis of mafic-ultramafic inclusions in sublayer and inclusion quartz diorite and implications for the formation of associated NICU-PGE mineralization in the Sudbury igneous complex
The lowermost, discontinuous units of the impact-generated Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC),
Sublayer, Footwall Breccia (FWBX), and Inclusion Quartz Diorite (IQD), are distinguished from
overlying Main Mass norite rocks by the presence of abundant inclusions and Ni-Cu-PGE (PGE
– platinum group element) mineralization. The majority of the felsic-mafic inclusions appear to
be derived from exposed country rocks, but volumetrically important mafic-ultramafic inclusions
have only rare equivalents in the surrounding country rocks and appear to be preferentially
associated with sulfide mineralization. Establishing the petrogenesis of the mafic-ultramafic
inclusions and the nature of their association with the Ni-Cu-PGE mineralization are therefore
critical to understand the evolution of the impact melt, genesis of Sublayer, FWBX, and IQD, and
the formation of one of the world’s largest accumulations of Ni-Cu-PGE mineralization.
Petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical, and Sm-Nd and Re-Os isotopic data indicate three
origins for the olivine-bearing mafic-ultramafic inclusions: (1) Anteliths, comprising olivine melanorites and olivine melagabbronorites in the Whistle and
Levack embayments on the North Range, which are characterized by igneous textures, Zr/Y,
Zr/Nb, Nb/U, and Zr/Hf ratios similar to igneous-textured Sublayer matrix (ITSM), unradiogenic
εNd1850 Ma values (-8 to -5), and slightly unradiogenic to radiogenic γOs1850 Ma values (-8 to +94).
They likely crystallized from a local mixture of SIC impact melt and a more mafic melt derived
by melting of the widespread Huronian volcanic and subvolcanic units in the region.
(2) Local xenoliths, comprising wehrlites and olivine clinopyroxenites in the Levack embayment
and olivine melanorites in the Foy Offset on the North Range, which are characterized by shock
mosaic and recrystallized textures, and trace element patterns (e.g., negative Th-U, Nb-Ta-(Ti), Sr, and Zr-Hf anomalies) similar to and Nb/U ratios overlapping with a layered mafic-ultramafic
intrusion in the footwall of the Levack and Fraser deposits. They were likely derived from local
mafic-ultramafic protoliths that were petrogenetically-related to the layered mafic-ultramafic
intrusion in the footwall of the Levack and Fraser deposits.
(3) Exotic xenoliths, comprising phlogopite/feldspar lherzolites in the Trill, Levack, and Bowell
embayments and the Foy Offset dike on the North Range, which are characterized by variably
igneous, tectonic-metamorphic, and shock-metamorphic textures, and orthopyroxene reaction
rims against igneous-textured Sublayer matrix (ITSM), indicating disequilibrium with the impact
melt. One composite inclusion exhibits igneous layering of feldspar lherzolite and olivine gabbro,
suggesting derivation from an unexposed older layered mafic-ultramafic intrusion. The calculated
parental magma for one particularly well-preserved feldspar lherzolite inclusion is similar to
continental arc basalt formed by up to 5% partial melting of garnet peridotite. Ol-Cpx-Pl
thermobarometry of several exotic inclusions indicate equilibration at 900o
C – 1120o
C and 210 –
300 MPa, suggesting emplacement into upper-middle crust (7.7 – 10.9 km), prior to being
incorporated into the lower parts of the proto-SIC during impact excavation and/or
thermomechanical erosion of target rocks. Most analyzed inclusions, ITSM, and Main Mass lithologies are enriched in highly incompatible
elements with negative Nb-Ta-Ti anomalies, unradiogenic Nd, and radiogenic Os isotopic
signatures. These features suggest that the impact sampled rocks that were derived from
subduction-metasomatized mantle, including the widespread Huronian volcanic and intrusive
rocks adjacent to the SIC. Melting of these volcanic and intrusive rocks and the underlying
Neoarchean Superior Province upper-middle crustal rocks would produce the observed
geochemical characteristics of the SIC lithologies and inclusions. The Main Mass has a very homogeneous Hf isotopic composition, indicating that the impact melt
sheet was well mixed. However, Sublayer, IQD, and overlying basal Main Mass norites vary
widely in terms of Pb-S-(Os) isotopic compositions. Most mafic-ultramafic inclusions, except for
anteliths, contain no sulfides and exhibit no signatures of Ni-Cu-PGE depletion caused by prior
sulfide saturation, which suggest that the association between mafic-ultramafic inclusions and NiCu-PGE sulfide mineralization is attributable to the hydrodynamic equivalence of less dense but
larger silicate inclusions and denser but smaller sulfide melt droplets during transport and/or
settling. Anteliths, locally-derived inclusions, and local variations in Pb-S-(Os) isotopes must
have been generated in situ, requiring significant degrees of assimilation of footwall rocks via
thermomechanical erosion, whereas most exotic inclusions other than shocked feldspar lherzolite
were derived from deeper mafic-ultramafic protoliths, generated during impact excavation and/or
thermomechanical erosion, and physically transported into their current locations. Thus,
thermomechanical erosion played an important role in the generation of embayments,
incorporation of xenoliths and sulfide xenomelts from the mineralized country rocks (e.g., EBLINipissing-Huronian), and formation of isotopic heterogeneity in the basal parts of the SIC.
Convective- and gravity-driven mass flow contributed to the horizontal transportation of
inclusions and sulfide xenomelts into the embayment when the impact melt contained <45%
inclusions, but became less significant as proto-Sublayer incorporated more inclusions
Improving group role assignment problem by incremental assignment algorithm
The Assignment Problem is a basic combinatorial optimization problem. In a weighted
bipartite graph, the Assignment Problem is to find a largest sum of weights matching. The
Hungarian method is a well-known algorithm which is combinatorial optimization.
Adding a new row and a new column to a weighted bipartite graph is called the
Incremental Assignment Problem (IAP). The maximum weighted matching (the optimal solution)
of the weighted bipartite graph has been given. The algorithm of the Incremental Assignment
Problem utilizes the given optimal solution (the maximum weighted matching) and the dual
variables to solve the matrix after extended bipartite graph.
This thesis proposes an improvement of the Incremental Assignment Algorithm (IAA),
named the Improved Incremental Assignment Algorithm. The improved algorithm will save the
operation time and operation space to find the optimal solution (the maximum weighted
matching) of the bipartite graph.
We also present the definition of the Incremental Group Role Assignment Problem that
based on the Group Role Assignment Problem (GRAP) and Incremental Assignment Problem
(IAP). A solution has been designed to solve it by using the Improved Incremental Assignment
Algorithm (IIAA).
In this thesis, simulation results are presented. We utilize the tests to compare the
algorithm of the Incremental Assignment Problem and the Improved Incremental Assignment
Algorithm (IIAA) to show the advantages of IIAA
Tuberculosis detection and localization from chest x-ray images using deep convolutional neural networks
Tuberculosis (TB) is a lung disease that is highly contagious and continues to be a major cause of
death during the past few decades worldwide. As the most efficient and cost-effective imaging
method for medical purposes, chest X-Rays (CXRs) have been widely used as the preliminary tool
for diagnosing TB. The automatic detection of TB and the localization of suspected areas which
contain the disease manifestations with high accuracy will greatly improve the general quality of
the diagnosis processes. This thesis discusses and introduces some methods to improve the
accuracy and stability of different deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models (VGG16,
VGG19, Inception V3, ResNet34, ResNet50 and ResNet101) that are used for TB detection. The
proposed method includes three major processes: modifications on CNN model structures, model
fine-tuning via artificial bee colony algorithm, and the implementation of the ensemble CNN
model. Comparisons of the overall performance are made for all three stages among various CNN
models on three CXR datasets (Montgomery County Chest X-Ray dataset, Shenzhen Hospital
Chest X-Ray dataset and NIH Chest X-Ray8 dataset). The tested performance includes the
detection of abnormalities in CXRs and the diagnosis of different manifestations of TB. Moreover,
class activation mapping is employed to visualize the localization of the detected manifestations
on CXRs and make the diagnosis result visually convincing. The implementation of our proposed
methods have the ability to assist doctors and radiologists in generating a well-informed decision
during the detection of TB
La perception des diplômés d’une école des sciences de l’activité physique à l’égard du développement de leurs compétences professionnelles en physiothérapie : une étude de cas
Le but de cette thèse est de mieux comprendre le processus de développement des sept
compétences professionnelles des physiothérapeutes lors d’une première formation de base à
l’école des sciences de l’activité physique (ÉSAP) de l’Université Laurentienne. La question
principale est : « Quels sont les dispositifs curriculaires et pédagogiques de formation à
la
compé
tence professionnelle que l’ÉSAP met en place lors des quatre années de formation ? » La
méthode utilisée est celle d’une approche qualitative d’étude de cas. Elle a permis d’analyser les
propos recueillis lors des entrevues individuelles semi-structurées auprès des neuf participants.
L’analyse des données révèle deux types de dispositifs curriculaires 1) les cours théoriques,
pratiques et laboratoires; 2) la structure du programme et deux types de dispositifs pédagogiques
1) les stratégies d’enseignement et 2) les stratégies d’apprentissage). Enfin, il est possible
d’affirmer que les dispositifs curriculaires et pédagogiques mis en place à l’ÉSAP contribuent
grandement au développement des sept compétences professionnelles essentielles à la
physiothérapie
