Laurentian University habitat for holistic healing and wellness: growing spaces for fostering a culture of ritualistic self-care
If the built environment can affect wellbeing, could a design approach that is centered around fostering reflective lifestyle habits in post-secondary student wellness centers improve the cultural perception of
spaces for mental health?In health, “mind and body dualism represents the metaphysical stance that mind and body are two distinct substances, each with a different essential nature.” 1 This frame of mind has distracted academic “focus away from the dynamic nature of human beings, [and] their relationship with the environment.”2 Contrary to mind-body dualism, this thesis argues that the built environment plays an intrinsic role in holistic wellbeing. Historically places for mental health have been about isolation away
from society, and there is still an element of stigma or shame that shrouds these spaces. Contemporary society is at the crux of a cultural shift which hopes to see mental health maintenance as a fundamental element of
holistic health. Architecture can mediate and promote this shift by providing spaces which, contrary to asylums
or psychiatric offi ces, empower those struggling with their mental wellbeing.3 Employing an approach called
the ‘measure-free recipe’ methodology, this thesis proposal endeavors to curate texture, path, context and
light; tactfully manage concepts of self, control, security and time; and architecturally manifest an environment
which would promote phenomenological experiences of empowerment, curiosity, comfort and decompression. Development of the ‘measure-free recipe’ derives from
a review of atmospheres which have negatively impacted cultural perception of holistic health, in comparison
to phenomenologically positive atmospheres. Details of this approach will be further articulated later in the
text. Importantly, the design of the Laurentian University Habitat for Holistic Healing and Wellbeing serves as the first ‘measure-free recipe’ taste test for growing spaces which foster ritualistic self-care
Deconstructing the threshold: a new architectural language for the three nations border crossing
Deconstructing the Threshold: A New Architectural Language for the Three Nations Border Crossing confronts the philosophical framework of the international border between Canada
and the United States. By identifying three fictions, following
Peter Eisenman in his essay “The End of the Classical: The End
of the Beginning, the End of the End,” the thesis categorizes the
language of a border crossing into three fictions: Identity (Meaning), Truth (Threshold) and History (Borders through Time). By
understanding these fictions to be the message that Ports of Entry (POE) are designed to convey, how can they be deconstructed, to be read by groups of people who do not acknowledge
the border? The study site and location of a building proposal is
located at the Seaway International Bridge Crossing spanning between Cornwall, Ontario and Rooseveltown, New York. The site
plays an important role in the ideas presented in the thesis as the
site is the location of Akwesasne First Nation, unceded Mohawk
territory which is bisected by this border, reinforcing the idea of
borders as abstract constructs. As borders are not percieved in
the same way by everyone this thesis poses the question - how
can a threshold become a space that embodies the idea of shared
collective difference
Walking with our sisters: healing through storytelling
This thesis explores the experiences of members of the Walking with Our Sisters
organizing committee before, during, and after the installation came to Sudbury, Ontario in
January 2018. The primary research objective was understanding how storytelling allows for a
collaborative and holistic approach to the research process.
Through the sharing of Indigenous stories and knowledge, this thesis implicates the
researcher as a settler-researcher who was privileged with stories of members of the WWOS
organizing committee’s journey before, during, and after the installation visited Sudbury in
January 2018.
Although each participant’s story revealed the uniqueness of everyone’s experiences
working in the committee, four major themes emerged from the interviews: 1) personal
connections to violence against women 2) relationships, self-care & debriefing, 3) arts-based
methods as a form of healing and 4) closing the bundle. Presenting the participants’ interviews
back, through the process of storytelling, revealed the emotional and personal responses to the
WWOS installation and created a more collaborative research process than traditional Western
approaches, thus shifting the power in the research.
The results of this research will be useful in contributing to decolonial literature and
understanding the importance of practicing self-care when approaching the traumatic subject
matter associated with MMIWG
Optimal cancer classification of microarray data using different optimization techniques
Cancer being one of the most vital diseases in the medical history needs adequate focuses
on its cause, symptom and detection. Various algorithms and software have been designed
so far to predict the disease at cellular level. The most crucial data for sorting the cancerous
tissue is the classification of such tissues based on the gene expression data. Gene expression
data consists of high amount of genetic data as compared to the number of data samples.
Thus, sample size and dimensions are a major challenge for researchers. In this work, four
different types of cancers are analyzed viz., breast cancer, lung cancer, leukemia and colon
cancer. The analysis is done using various nature-inspired algorithms like Grasshopper
Optimization (GOA), Interval Value Based Particle Swarm Optimization (IVPSO) and
Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). To study the accuracy of the data, five different
classifiers are used – Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighborhood (KNN), Neural Network and
Support Vector Machine (SVM). The comprehensive data analysis is done with the
combination of these five classifiers over various datasets of each of the selected cancer type.
After deep analyzing different combinations GOA outperformed for almost each dataset.

Sedimentology, stratigraphy, and U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology of the Mesoproterozoic Husky Creek Formation, Coppermine River Group, Nunavut, Canada
The Husky Creek Formation (part of the Coppermine River Group, western Nunavut,
Canada) is a <1.23-billion-year-old siliciclastic sedimentary unit that represents the uppermost
portion of the Sequence A stratigraphic subdivision – a package of Proterozoic volcanic and
sedimentary rocks correlative across the Canadian Arctic. Sedimentologic indicators suggest a
continental, temperate to arid depositional environment for the Husky Creek Formation, which
included fluvial channel belts and floodplains subject to local aeolian winnowing. U-Pb detritalzircon geochronology resolved derivation from rocks related to the Mackenzie Igneous Event, or
recycling from older sediments such as the Hornby Bay Group. The Husky Creek Formation was
deposited in the waning stages of the Mackenzie Igneous Event, in a restricted basin that was
carved atop an extensive mafic volcanic plateau. A dominantly west-northwestward palaeoflow
suggests that sediment transport from the core of the Laurentian craton was not significantly
disrupted by crustal doming related to large-igneous-province emplacement

Structural geology, stratigraphy, and gold deposits of the New Britannia Mining District of the paleoproterozoic Snow Lake arc assemblage (Snow Lake, Manitoba, Canada)
Orogenic gold deposits in the Snow Lake area in the southeastern Trans Hudson Orogen,
Manitoba, include the New Britannia deposit which, with a past production of a 1.4M oz Au (43
699 kg), is the largest Proterozoic gold deposit in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The deposits are
hosted by the ca. 1.89 Ga Paleoproterozoic Snow Lake arc (SLA) assemblage of the Flin Flon
Glennie Complex (FFGC). The FFGC is bound by a sedimentary basin to the north, namely the
Kisseynew Domain. It represents an oceanic protocontinent within an ancestral ocean, the
Manikewan Ocean, which occupied the region between three Archean cratons (Hearne, Sask,
Superior). The deposits occur within a sequence of explosive, submarine, bimodal volcanic rocks emplaced
during an early episode of rifting and subsidence of the SLA. Deformation of these rocks began
with their imbrication along brittle thrust faults during a D1 event. It continued during a ca. 1.84-
1.82 Ga D2 event with thrusting of the Kisseynew basin and FFGC above the colliding Sask
craton. The D2 event produced a penetrative regional foliation axial planar to map-scale isoclinal
folds (NorAcme Anticline), sheath-like gneiss domes along the Kisseynew-FFGC boundary, and
regional southwest-directed ductile thrust faults, such as the McLeod Road Thrust. Final collision
of the FFGC and Sask craton with the Superior craton during a ca. 1.83-1.80 Ga D3 event
reactivated the ductile thrust faults, folded the gneiss domes, and enabled the development of an
orogen-parallel regional stretching lineation during lateral flow parallel to the cold Superior craton. The New Britannia deposit and nearby gold deposits were emplaced in the hinge of the Nor-Acme
Anticline early during the D2 event, were folded during tightening of the fold, stretched parallel to
the regional stretching lineation, and transposed along a late crosscutting shear zone, the Howe Sound fault, which formed as a transfer fault during thrusting. The deposits formed at amphibolite
facies conditions during a prograde metamorphic event that culminated during the collision of the
FFGC and Sask craton with the Superior craton during the D3 event. Thus, the deposits are atypical
compare to most other Proterozoic and Archean orogenic gold deposits which typically form at
greenschist facies conditions
Compassion fatigue in child protection workers in Northeastern Ontario
A career in the child protection sector is one of the most complex roles in the social work
profession. Child protection worker (CPW) duties include accepting referrals, conducting
investigations of allegations or evidence that children are experiencing abuse, and protecting
children from abuse where necessary. This can include providing short- or long-term
intervention with families, or ultimately removing children from their homes, where the risks are
too great to be mitigated with less intrusive measures. CPWs are on-call and available 24-hours
per day, 7-days per week. Due to the demanding nature of the career, CPWs often experience
symptoms of compassion fatigue which can manifest in many symptoms, such as physical,
emotional, and mental distress and disturbances. The aim of this qualitative research thesis was
to examine the experiences of CPWs in Northeastern Ontario through individual interviews with
CPW retirees. A total of 11 retirees were individually interviewed. The interviews were then
transcribed and qualitatively analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Three main themes
were constructed from the responses: Quality/Impact of the Work; Recruitment and Retention;
and Recommendations for Improvement. This thesis describes four implications of this study:
the impact on CPWs’ well-being; the importance of increased training; the necessity of clinical
supervision and debriefing; as well as the significance of peer-to-peer learning. Lastly, study
limitations, as well as considerations for future research, are discussed.Master of Social Work (MSW
The representation of athletes in tweets at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games: an agenda setting analysis
The agenda setting theory questions how the selection and arrangement of
news affect the public’s perceptions over news events. As Twitter is a new platform
for sport organizations to release news, bypassing traditional agencies, “agenda
setting” bears new meanings. This thesis attempts to determine the agenda set
during the 2015 Toronto Pan Am and Parapan Am Games by examining the
representation of athletes on the Twitter account @TO2015.
Initially, without considering that the news release was the Organizing
Committee itself, the analysis assumed incorrectly that the representation favoured
the Pan Am Games. Without the support from the data, the researcher re-examined
the study and realized that his preoccupations with “equal representation” misled
his categorization of the tweets. Then the researcher reanalyzed the tweets in new
categories. This time the analysis observed the cultural differences of the two
Games, and thus came up with recommendations for more effective Twitter
management
A new method for interpolating linear features in aeromagnetic data

The posting is available free of charge and its use is subject to the SEG terms and conditions: https://seg.org/Terms-of-UseWhen aeromagnetic data are interpolated to make a gridded image, thin linear features can result in “boudinage” or “string of beads” artifacts if the anomalies are at acute angles to the traverse lines. These artifacts are due to the undersampling of these types of features across the flight lines, making it difficult for most interpolation methods to effectively maintain the linear nature of the features without user guidance. The magnetic responses of dikes and dike swarms are typical examples of the type of geologic feature that can cause these artifacts; thus, these features are often difficult to interpret. Many interpretation methods use various enhancements of the gridded data, such as horizontal or vertical derivatives, and these artifacts are often exacerbated by the processing. Therefore, interpolation methods that are free of these artifacts are necessary for advanced interpretation and analysis of thin, linear features. We have developed a new interpolation method that iteratively enhances linear trends across flight lines, ensuring that linear features are evident on the interpolated grid. Using a Taylor derivative expansion and structure tensors allows the method to continually analyze and interpolate data along anisotropic trends, while honoring the original flight line data. We applied this method to synthetic data and field data, which both show improvement over standard bidirectional gridding, minimum curvature, and kriging methods for interpolating thin, linear features at acute angles to the flight lines. These improved results are also apparent in the vertical derivative enhancement of field data. The source code for this method has been made publicly available
