Learning from Bruce Beach: establishing an ordered base for the collective weaving of ornament
“To live is to leave traces”

. In the words of
German philosopher Walter Benjamin,
the physical spaces in which immaterial
memories are created have a tendency to
accrue material remnants of memory as
well. Within the fabric of multigenerational
spaces these accrued remnants become
tangible threads by which social structures
and traditions can be visually expressed.
This ornamental phenomenon does not
always present itself as the dominant
design-language. In the case of the
seasonal cottage-community of Bruce
Beach, Ontario it is often only apparent
in unobtrusive details. Grandparent
Architecture: Establishing a Design Language
for the Cottagers of Bruce Beach seeks to
answer the following question: Can a
physical space, accrued with collective
memories, act as an encyclopedia by which
cottagers can comprehend the design
language of Bruce Beach?
Bruce Beach’s architectural language is
muddled by outside trends, a physical
outlier within a community where
collective traditions and memories prevail.
There is no accessible design-language
available to cottagers whilst they engage
in architectural processes, leaving
more accessible, globalized trends to
fill the linguistic void. While seasonal,
multigenerational cottages still dominate
the social fabric, and thus help preserve
collective memories, fraying has begun to
occur. As time passes, families gain new
members faster than spaces can adapt to
hold them, resulting in the fragmenting,
and even dissolution, of collective time spent within the community. Coupled with
the recent trends of cottages being converted
into all-season dwellings or investment
properties for community newcomers, the
collective social fabric that the community
ties itself to risks becoming obsolete.
Interactions with the accrued ornament
of my family’s Bruce Beach cottage has
resulted in an understanding of the
ability for even the most irreverent of
objects to become cairns of memory. This
understanding is expanded through a
photographic study of the community,
utilizing a ‘wayward-eye’

mentality to
capture any sort of ornament that could
serve as a memory thread. Enriching the
photos with written and oral memories
will allow for the minor design-languages
to become apparent. These languages will
be used to lay out a series of architectural
orders, coined ‘Grandparent Architecture’,
on which the ornamental remnants of
collective memories can accrue. The
orders will be used as an origin point for
the design of three cabins, sited on the
three collectively owned, community
groves that are within the Bruce Beach
community. A series of drawing exercises
will illustrate the accrual of collectively
applied ornament on, within and around
these communal spaces. This thesis
seeks to situate buildings as community
elders, encyclopedias of the ‘Grandparent
Architecture’ language. The palpable
design language that emerges will be
accessible and endeared to the community,
ensuring its validity in the future
architecture of personal cottages
Didactic analysis of prescribed content and taught content by SPE Teachers: A case study of High Jump Teaching in grade 9 in Benin
RÉSUMÉ
Cette étude a pour objectif d’analyser, auprès de trois (03) enseignants d’EPS, la différence en termes de construction de connaissance entre les contenus prévus à être enseignés et ceux réellement enseignés au saut en hauteur afin de dégager les écarts entre les contenus prescrits, prévus et réalisés. Pour atteindre cet objectif, nous avons eu recours à certains concepts clés de la théorie de l’Anthropologique du didactique de Chevallard (1992). Les résultats montrent que les enseignants ne font pas exactement, en situation de classe, ce que les documents officiels ont prescrit. Les écarts constatés sont fonctions de l’interprétation des injonctions de la Direction de l’Inspection, de l’Innovation et de la Qualité (DIPIQ) et leur mise en relation avec les prescriptions des programmes d’études que font les enseignants. Un mauvais rapport institutionnel aux savoirs se traduisant par les tâches proposées aux apprenants justifie donc ces écarts. Il urge donc d’uniformiser les programmes d’étude de chaque classe avec les injonctions de la DIPIQ
ABSTRACT
The objective of this study is to analyze three (03) PSE teachers to determine the difference in terms of knowledge
construction between the content planned to be taught and that actually taught in the High Jump in order to identify the gaps between the prescribed, planned and actual content. To achieve this objective, we used certain key concepts from Chevallard’s (1992) anthropological theory of didactics. The results show that teachers do not do exactly what official documents have prescribed in classroom situations. The discrepancies observed are a function of the interpretation of the DIPIQ injunctions and their relation to the curriculum prescriptions made by teachers. A poor institutional relationship to knowledge as reflected in the tasks offered to learners therefore justifies these discrepancies. Survival analysis of patients with colorectal cancer using semi-supervised learning
A present study introduces survival analysis for patients with Colorectal cancer. In cancer survival
analysis gene selection is a significant task. The most significant invention in the clinical cancer
research is to diagnose cancer more precisely dependent on the patient’s gene expression profiles.
For classification of High-risk and low-risk or survival time prediction for the patient’s analytic
operation, Cox proportional hazards model (COX) and accelerated failure time model (AFT) have
been universally embraced. Limited number of samples and censored data are a major setback for
training powerful and exact Cox classification model. Also, comparative phenotype tumors and
prognoses are completely different diseases at the genotype and sub-molecular level.
Subsequently, the utility of the AFT model for the survival time forecasting is restricted when such
natural contrasts of the maladies have not been properly distinguished. To attempt to conquer these
two fundamental issues, a novel semi-supervised learning technique has been implemented in this
thesis, considering the Cox and AFT models to precisely foresee the treatment hazard and the
endurance time of the patients. Furthermore, to choose the relevant genes that associate with the
disease, the L1/2 regularization approach has been used in the semi-supervised learning method.
Semi-supervised learning model can powerfully improve the predictive performance of Cox and
AFT models in endurance examination prove in the results of simulation experiments. These
methods have been effectively applied on simulated data, Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
(DLBCL_2002) microarray gene expression and clinical datasets. These methodologies were
tested on new real microarray gene expression and clinical datasets of Colorectal Cancer. The
upsides of the proposed semi-supervised learning technique include: Increase in the number of training samples that are available from the censored data, high capacity for distinguishing the
endurance hazard classes of patients in Cox, high anticipating precision for patient’s endurance
time in AFT model and robust efficiency of the proper gene selection. Semi-supervised learning
model is one more applicable tool for endurance examination in clinical cancer research. The semisupervised learning method was seen to be very strong in the detection of the correct simulated
genes especially when the gene expressions are independent. The analysis was performed on the
real data and the results showed the semi-cox is superior compared with single cox, single AFT

While the notion of 'Canadian identity' tends to oversimplify the country's cultural diversity,
it is frequently claimed that national identity is both reflected in and promoted by Canada’s
National Parks. This owes largely to the fact that the beginning of the National Parks system
in the late nineteenth century, coincided with the formation of Canada as a country, and
that National Parks have been established in every province since. Yet despite the mandate
of Parks Canada to preserve these landscapes for future generations of Canadians, their
inconsistent approach to both land stewardship and to genuine cultural inclusivity exposes
the need for a new form of park management. Focusing on the proposed National Park
Reserve on the Hog Island Sandhills in Prince Edward Island, this thesis project prioritizes
a cooperative management model between Parks Canada and the local Indigenous
communities while contributing to the site’s cultural and environmental sustainability.
Mobilizing design to critically (re)brand the National Park's architecture, its wayfinding
and its promotional materials, this thesis project promotes the official (but inconsistently
respected) mandate of Parks Canada for landscape conservation while also prioritizing
Canada’s stated (but not yet realized) commitment to Truth and Reconciliation
Recollecting genius Loci: an architectural analysis of Place in Killarney, Ontario
A sense of place is one of the most fundamental qualities of
architecture as it mediates between culture, nature, landscape and the
continuum of time.1 Yet we tend to underestimate the significance of place
in the formation of our built environments with detached realities of locality.
Consequently, the once multifaceted community of Killarney, Ontario is
currently being displaced with the rise of its prevalent tourism industry. There
exists a disconnect between the local natural and cultural realm, resulting in
economic, social and environmental imbalances. What is left to recall are the
multitude of layers found within its cultural landscapes; a sequence of identity
thresholds found among its storied grounds.
This thesis explores the contributive role of the genius locus, in the
identity of small remote fragile communities in hopes of preserving meaningful
places (fig 1.01). The research addresses the analysis of genius loci as a historical
phenomenon and as a modern role, by capturing the essence of a place that
reflects the culture and regional sense of pride. This thesis seeks to become a
resilient framework to re-establish the identity and to support core community
values through a distinct, quietly assertive, and grounded contextual character.
Through photographs, mapping and anecdotes, this thesis will celebrate
Killarney’s histories of virtues through an eclectic architectural proposal
capturing the site-specific landscape and lifestyles, while also connecting design
achievements with the know-how and skills of handcraft-based knowledge.
The goal of the project attempts to reconnect the multiple histories of
place through regional architectural aesthetic, and the environment, utilizing
local materials and construction techniques with self-efficacy as a moderator
in the context of Killarney. Seeking long-term strategies to address Killarney’s
robust natural resources and local craftsmanship, this thesis project will sustain
and empower the community, while strengthening their roots to make and
become part of a shared local ecosystem
Prediction of solar radiation values on Indian cities using machine learning and deep learning techniques
The use of renewable resources has grown rapidly as non - renewable resources become
exhausted, electricity consumption rises, and environmental problems develop. Rapid
improvements in energy sources have opened possibilities for using solar energy to generate
electricity. Solar panels were used for various purposes, including sun heating, dining, and
building lighting. These regular long estimates of global solar radiation from a specific place
were critical for effective solar power generation and utilization. The climate patterns of a
region determine the quantity of sunlight radiation that reaches the planet's surface. For
sustainable energy systems, global solar radiance is regarded as being an essential metric. It
was vital to examine the sunlight available in each region before installing any photovoltaic
technology. In this study, solar radiation is analyzed with the help of the meteorological dataset
of Indian cities (Mumbai, Chennai & Delhi) from meteoblue (meteoblue.com). Comparison is
made in two parts; of each town, the data from 2015-2019 is used for training, and data from
2020 is taken for testing. In the second case, data for 2015-2020 for two cities is used for
training, and the data for the third city is taken for testing. The independent variables of the
dataset include sunshine duration, month, cloud cover, soil temperature, mean monthly
temperature, 2m temperature (air temperature at 2 meters above the surface), sea level pressure,
wind speed, max temp, min temp. First, independent variables are used for the regression
model, and then a stepwise Multi Non-Linear Regression (MNLR) model is applied to find the
optimal input variables. Three classifiers were applied to find and compare the performance of
the models, namely Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and
Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), which is a deep neural network mode. The accuracy results
of all the SVM, MNLR, ANN, and RNN were comparable, but ANN gave better results with

A retrospective insight into the potential effects of parasites on the eastern loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus spp.) captive-breeding program in southeastern Canada
Recovery programs around the globe attempt to mitigate the current biodiversity
crisis. Captive breeding programs (CBPs) are one of the tools to attempt conserving
diverse threatened or endangered species. This study investigates the CBP of an
endangered passerine species in southeastern Canada, the eastern loggerhead shrike
(Lanius ludovicianus spp.; ELOSH) in the context of one of the most common sanitary
challenges in captivity: parasitic infections. Endoparasites can cause damage directly
and/or indirectly and may lead to restriction of growth and reproductive functions of their
host. This thesis objective is to draw attention to the importance of host-parasite
interactions in captive-breeding settings, as well as study the potential effects on breeding
success, by collection and analysis of historical data. Two separate datasets were used to
conduct the statistical analysis (1) one to describe the parasitic prevalence and abundance,
and its effects on the captive population, and (2) another to examine the effects of such
parasites in the reproductive output of ELOSH females. Male-biased and juvenile-biased
parasitism were observed among the individuals parasitized by Capillaria sp. In females,
the abundance of Capillaria sp. was the only significant factor negatively affecting their
reproductive output. Altogether, the results highlight the importance of parasitic
management in CBPs, especially for endangered species, where it is essential to prevent
any further threats to an already scarce population
Oral cancer prediction on epigenomics data using machine learning methods
Epigenomic is the study that deals with phenotype alteration that do not cause any
modification in the DNA sequence of cells. Epigenomics is formed up of the word’s epi and
genomics, with epi deriving from the Greek prefix. The epi- in Epigenomics refers to features
that are "on top of" or "in addition to" the traditional genetic base for inheritance. As a result,
it basically adds something on the top of DNA to modify its characteristics, thereby prohibiting
some DNA behaviors. These changes take place in cancer cells and are the single cause of
cancer. Oral Cancer is one of the most common type of Cancer and responsible for hundreds
of thousands of deaths every year. Can we predict Oral Cancer at its early stage? The main
objective of this study and research is to find the most important genes which affect the whole
process of identifying Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) and to predict OSCC in a
patient accurately. OSCC is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide, with a global
incidence of more than 350,000 new cases and 177,000 deaths every year, though with
considerable geographic and environmental risk factor differences worldwide. Tobacco use,
alcohol consumption, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection are the main risk factors
associated with Oral cancer (for nasopharyngeal cancer). The data includes methylation,
histone, human genome and RNA-Sequences. The data is accessed through open-source
technologies in R and Python programming languages. The data is processed to reduce the
dimensionality and extract the most relevant features and with the help of statistical analysis
and advanced machine learning techniques, the prediction of Oral cancer is obtained from the

Theoretical architecture in Nihei Tsutomu's Blame! & the Agency that shapes our cities: an exploration of the comic medium
The core elements of this thesis are drawing, the comic medium, and theoretical architecture.
Through an investigation of the comic medium, this thesis explores the architectural implications of a
city, situated in a fictional world, without; orientation, time, or human intervention. By examining a work
of theoretical architecture, the manga BLAME!, this thesis examines how the drawn medium critiques
the agency that shapes our contemporary cities, shaped by the forces of expansionist, economy-based
development.
Authored by the architecturally trained Japanese manga artist Nihei Tsutomu, BLAME! follows
the story of a silent hero, Killy, as he meanders through the infinite expanses of a steel and concrete
labyrinth known only as The City. This city, one built from the mind of a machine and developed without
any comprehensible purpose, has expanded for tens of thousands of years beyond control. In this
dystopian future, Nihei explores the theoretical architecture of a universe wherein expansionism alone
drives the development of cities, and where the practical application of building has distorted beyond
recognition.
The world of BLAME! is full of antagonists who stand as impediments to our heroes’ cause. In this
future, the will of a sentient machine governs The City’s laws and executes its orders. Killy’s journey, a
pretext to scower the expanses of The City, is to find the Net Terminal Gene. The Net Terminal Gene is
what stands between the inhabitants of The City, and freedom. Cibo, a highly decorated scientist from
whom Killy finds help along his journey, may have the solution to halting the chaotic expansion of The
City, and finding a way to escape it.
Through the use of drawing and narrative, Nihei Tsutomu explores the consequences of a city
void of orientation, time, scale, human intervention, and natural phenomena. While the reality the
artist/author explores may be a fictional, future dystopia, much of its story parallels the contemporary
condition of the growing development within our own cities
