The nature and the role of critical thinking in Sports and Physical Education in Algeria: Sports and Physical Education Teachers’ Conceptions
Les enseignantes et les enseignants sont de plus en plus invités à
développer les habiletés et les attitudes reliées à la pensée critique lors de leurs
enseignements. Or, la mise en place de tout dispositif didactico-pédagogique vers
une innovation pédagogique par les enseignantes et les enseignants sont soustendues par leurs conceptions. Ces dernières sont alors perçues comme des
éléments explicatifs de leurs pratiques enseignantes. Dans cet article, les auteurs
se sont intéressés aux conceptions qu’ont des enseignantes et des enseignants
d’EPS d’Algérie relatives à la nature et au rôle de la pensée critique en classe
d’EPS. Il ressort de l’analyse du corpus recueilli, par le biais d’entrevues
individuelles et de focus group auprès de 15 enseignantes et enseignants, que
plusieurs conceptions de la nature et du rôle de la pensée critique en éducation
physique sont énoncées par les enseignantes et les enseignants d’EPS. Toutes ces
conceptions présentent la pensée critique comme un processus cognitif au service
de l’apprentissage et du développement de l’élève en EPS = Teachers are increasingly invited to develop skills and attitudes related to
critical thinking during their teaching. However, the implementation of any
educational device towards a pedagogical innovation by the teachers is
underpinned by their conceptions. These are perceived as explanatory elements
of their teaching practices. In this article, the authors are interested in the
conceptions that SPE Teachers in Algeria have regarding the nature and role of
critical thinking in the SPE setting. From the analysis of the corpus collected,
through individual interviews and focus groups with 15 teachers, it emerges that
several conceptions of the nature and role of critical thinking in physical
education are stated by SPE Teachers. All of these conceptions present critical
thinking as a cognitive process serving the learning and development of the

Assessing the origin of some representative Archean-Paleoproterozoic porphyry Cu ± Au deposits
Most known porphyry Cu ± Au deposits are exclusively associated with oxidized and sulfurrich Phanerozoic arc-related magmas, but Precambrian analogues are rare. The genesis of some
rare examples of such deposits (e.g., Tongkuangyu in Trans-North China Orogen) remains
debated, and in particular, it remains unclear as to whether similar metallogenic processes that
typify the Phanerozoic deposits also operated in the Precambrian. To resolve these issues, three
study areas were chosen to variably characterize relevant aspects of these deposits in the
context of porphyry-type metallogenies (i.e., the nature of mineralization, the redox states and
volatile element abundances of the causative magmas): (1) the ~2.1 Ga Tongkuangyu deposit
in Trans-North China Craton; (2) the ~1.88 Ga Haib porphyry Cu deposit, Southern Namibia;
and (3) representative porphyry-type Cu ± Au deposits (Côté Gold, St-Jude, and Croxall) in the
~2.7 Ga Abitibi subprovince.
At the Tongkuangyu deposit, remapping of the distribution of the host rocks, alteration, and
mineralization support a porphyry-type model where ore formation occurred at ~2.1 Ga. This
age is significantly later than the host granodiorite porphyry (~2.18 Ga) and schists (~2.5–2.2
Ga) and indicates that porphyry-type mineralization need not be linked directly to a causative
magma exposed at surface. Instead, the latter is interpreted to be represented by subjacent
porphyritic stocks and dikes.
At the Haib deposit, the host calc-alkaline plutonic rocks and mineralization are dated to ca.
1886–1881 Ma. Estimations of magmatic fO2 and S, based on zircon geochemistry, apatite µXANES spectra, and apatite S analysis, demonstrate that oxidized, sulfur-rich arc magmas
associated with porphyry Cu mineralization already existed in the late Paleoproterozoic. In addition, zircon Hf-O isotopes and whole-rock geochemistry support magmas of mantlederivation with minor crustal contributions that experienced amphibole ± plagioclase
fractionation. These features of the Haib magmas are thus similar to those for Phanerozoic
porphyry Cu deposits.
For the ~2.7 Ga TTG (tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite-diorite)-related porphyry-type Cu ±
Au deposits in the Abitibi subprovince, whole-rock geochemistry, zircon Hf-O isotopes, apatite
S contents, and multiple oxybarometers suggest that variable magmatic origin and fO2 for the
causative magmas. The rarity of porphyry-type Cu-Au deposits in these older settings may be
attributed to either location restriction of these favorable metallogenic conditions and/or
preservation, or exploration bias
Nomadic architecture: refuge on Ontario Crown Land
The history of Crown Land and its evolution from Magna Carta to the Canadian
Charter of Rights and Freedoms illuminates the handling of boundaries and
mishandling of people. For cultures that practiced oral traditions, the paper-based treaties raise questions of validity and coercion.1
The original inhabitants
did not own the land, but instead fostered a deep relationship with it.2
In a
similar way today, someone could live on much of the same land without
ownership of it.
Crown Land is managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and
Forestry, and it occupies 87% of Ontario, equating to 39 million hectares. Two of
its ten Land Use Designations - General Use and Enhanced Management Areas
- have unique potentials because of their rules for overnight accommodation.
Inhabitants may camp for free on a given site but must move 100 meters every
21 days to remain on Crown Land.3
Theoretically, one could live permanently
in these circumstances as long as they comply, and a mobile building could
satisfy this scenario.
The motivation to do so is stimulated by the COVID-19 pandemic
that normalized working and schooling from home for many Canadians. 'Zoom
cities' are remote places where real estate has been consumed for people to
isolate themselves. Often waterfront properties and for a wealthier class, this has
provided a new outlook on where and how people live and work. In addition,
housing prices have inflated dramatically over recent decades, further precluding
the possibility of owning property for young adults. For many, the pandemic
was the turning point for people to leave Toronto for affordable real estate and
access to green space. This thesis bridges these seemingly separate occurrences,
illustrating an alternative means of living where owning property is renounced,
yet one maintains economic viability. Tethered, but remote.
The architecture necessary to achieve this must be nomadic and leave
no traces of its existence. This approach to a practice that is synonymous with
permanence reflects the historical narrative as much as the necessity for lightness
in the future. Lightness in this context operates at several scales: in weight; in
possession and ownership; and ecological impact. The building and its user
would exist symbiotically with their site, embracing a closed-system approach
that accounts for all of their energy, food, and waste. It is driven by its context,
shaped by topography, local light, and tectonic potentials. This thesis offers a
practical and technical approach yet is also speculative in nature, looking to new
technologies and reflecting on its social context.
This nomadic lifestyle questions our society's unsatisfiable quench for
material accumulation. The ability to deny this indulgence in order to better
understand what we need as beings may bring us to be happier individuals,
content with an existence that unfolds at a slower pace
The effect of underground mining footwear on lower limb gait characteristics and perceived comfort
The aim of this study was to determine the impact of three commonly used underground mining
boots on comfort and gait characteristics when compared to a control condition. Finding the
footwear that least impacts gait characteristics should aid in limiting worker exposure to STF and
injury risk. To accomplish this objective, this major paper begins with a literature review
(Section 2) of STF risks in mining, gait characteristics and the influence of work boot factors on
gait and comfort. In Section 3 laboratory methods used to evaluate gait and perceived comfort
when wearing mining boots are presented and findings are shared in Section 4. Further
discussion on relevance of this work to underground miners, work boot manufacturers, and
health and safety practitioners is presented in Section 5 along with recommendations for future

To report or not to report: factors that influence physician error reporting behaviour
A significant amount of evidence affirms that medical errors increase the risk of
injury and death. In an ideal health care environment, physicians and health care
organizations would accurately report all medical errors to mitigate reoccurrences and
increase patient safety. However, the true incidence of physician error is largely unknown,
in part, due to underreporting. This under-reporting results in a lack of important data,
which may help us understand and correct error contributors and system design failures.
In addition, these errors also pose a significant financial burden on hospital expenses and
the healthcare system as a whole. The purpose of this major paper is to identify and
describe, the types of physician error and their causes, the reporting mechanisms of error,
and the predominant factors which can affect physician error reporting behaviour. The
"Theory of Planned Behaviour" is used as a means of identifying and illustrating how
certain factors can influence error reporting behaviour. Each factor associated with
physician error reporting is explained in relation the theory's constructs. The literature
search was conducted electronically using the Laurentian University Library to access
various journals and platforms. The predominant factors that influence reporting are: that
reporting system and process, psychological safety, manager and supervisor support,
feedback for patient safety improvement, teamwork and peer support, as well as lack of
time. By addressing the barriers and enablers of physician error reporting, patient safety
would increase. We can ensure the same errors do not occur again by addressing the
predominant factors that affect reporting. Despite efforts to increase reporting, further
research and implementation of practices are needed to reduce the barriers that influence
physician error reporting and increase the enablers
Characterization of alteration and mineralization at the Archean Grey Fox and Hislop magmatic-hydrothermal gold deposits, Matheson, Ontario
The Abitibi Greenstone belt (AGB) is host to some of the world’s largest gold deposits and their study has led to various gold deposit models and classifications. The latter includes a syenite- associated deposit type, which was first recognized in the early 2000s. This type of mineralization is present at the Grey Fox and Hislop deposits, which are located 80 km east of Timmins, Ontario. A study of their geologic setting, alteration, mineralogy, mineral chemistry, veining styles, and metal associations, suggest that these deposits, as well as others in the area, developed in different zones of a larger magmatic-hydrothermal system associated with alkalic intrusions of probable Timiskaming age (i.e., <2680 Ma). As such, they formed relatively early in the deformation history of the belt and predate the formation of the more common orogenic or greenstone-hosted quartz- carbonate vein deposits, such as the nearby Black Fox, which make up much of the gold budget in the AGB. A strong host-rock control is present at both deposits and their complex alteration histories provide insights on the formation of multiple mineralization styles within a single system. These different mineralization styles are described here to provide guidelines for mineral exploration for this deposit type in the Abitibi greenstone belt, as well as in other greenstone belts globally.Master of Science (MSc) in Geolog
« Je ne me reconnais plus » : rupture biographique de l’identité sexuelle de femmes aux prises avec un cancer gynécologique – une recherche narrative appuyée par la création artistique
Cette recherche narrative, ancrée dans des valeurs féministes et une démarche de réflexivité,
aborde l’expérience de femmes aux prises avec un cancer gynécologique. Les concepts
abordés ciblent les expériences de femmes francophones vivant en contexte linguistique
minoritaire dont le corps est marqué par la maladie et les traitements médicaux, leur
fonctionnement sexuel, l’expression de leur sexualité et de leur identité. L’identité narrative
(Bamberg, 2011; Reissman, 2008), l’identité corporelle (Le Breton, 2016) et l’identité
sexuelle (Dillon et coll., 2011; Worthington et coll., 2002) sont mises en lien avec divers
éléments – notamment l’hégémonie hétérosexuelle et l’hétérosexualité obligatoire (Rich,
1980) – afin de dégager comment ces femmes s’identifient lorsque la maladie et les
traitements altèrent leur corps, son fonctionnement, et en conséquence, leur identité
familière et préférée.
La méthodologie de recherche narrative (Clandinin, 2007; Reissman, 2008), dont le récit de
vie (Atkinson, 2007; Bertaux, 2005) appuyée par l’art (Cole et Knowles, 2008) utilisée dans
cette thèse de doctorat permet d’explorer, raconter et représenter une multiplicité
d’expériences vécues.
L’histoire individuelle des quatre participantes est accompagnée des autoportraits qu’elles
ont créés à l’aide de médiums artistiques : le moulage du corps et le collage. Par la suite,
une analyse narrative thématique dégage les thèmes suivants : prendre conscience de la
possibilité de sa mort; vivre dans le moment présent; reconfigurer ses attentes du futur;
composer avec des défis dans la langue de communication avec le personnel médical et
l’expérience de la dilatation vaginale.
Une analyse narrative structurelle présente comment, à la suite de traitements médicaux, ces
femmes ne se reconnaissent plus dans leur corps et leur identité sexuelle de femme
hétérosexuelle. L’invisibilité des effets de la maladie, des traitements et du stigmate social
qu’elles y associent, la menace à leur vie, les multiples pertes et la pression des normes
sociétales hétérosexuelles où la pénétration du pénis dans le vagin est le mode d’expression
privilégié et perçu comme essentiel dans leurs relations de couple, sont des facteurs vécus
comme une rupture biographique qui les contraignent à une transformation de leur identité.

Learning from Sudburbanism: An Identity-Based Infill Framework for Downtown Sudbury
Once a thriving urban environment, Downtown
Sudbury is now a place the average Sudburian avoids.
Due to a lack of local residents and urban density, it is
unable to sustain public life, support the well-being of
its inhabitants, and as a whole, provide an enjoyable
atmosphere. It is in dire need of urban renewal and a
key part of the solution is to add more housing through
sensitive infill densification projects.
This thesis thus studies people-oriented approaches
to learn how to implement infill projects in order to foster
interdependence and well-being at the architectural
and urban scale. It also studies the uniqueness of the
place in order to define identity-based guidelines that
can help ensure the design better relates to Sudbury’s
identity. This theory-based and place-based knowledge
is then paired to an architectural infill framework that is
then applied to three Downtown sites, demonstrating its
potential and flexibility
Effects of prenatal stress on circadian rhythms and metabolism in adult rat offspring
Circadian clocks developed in organisms as a way of estimating the time of day and
control many vital aspects of physiology from the sleep-wake cycle to metabolism. The
circadian clock operates through transcriptional-translational feedback loops. The normal
circadian signaling relies on a ‘master clock’, located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN),
which synchronizes peripheral oscillators. Here, glucocorticoid receptor (GR) signaling has
the ability to reset the phase of peripheral clocks. It has been shown that maternal exposure to
the stress hormone, glucocorticoids (GCs), can lead to modification of hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) function and impact stress-related behaviours and a hypertensive state via GR
activation. We previously demonstrated altered circadian rhythm signaling in the adrenal
glands of offspring exposed to the synthetic glucocorticoid, dexamethasone (Dex). Results
from the current study show that prenatal exposure to Dex, affects circadian rhythm gene
expression in a tissue and sex specific manner in molecular oscillators of the amygdala,
hippocampus, paraventricular nucleus and prefrontal cortex as well as the main oscillator in
the SCN. Results also show that spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) exhibited
dysregulated circadian rhythms in these same brain regions compared with normotensive
Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKYs), although the pattern of dysregulation was markedly different from
that seen in the Dex model. Metabolomic and gene expression results in the livers of GCexposed offspring revealed sex specific metabolic profiles with females displaying increased
lipid and glutathione metabolism, increased triglyceride concentration and decreased purine
metabolism while males saw increased purine metabolism and evidence of an adaptation for
increased lipid metabolism
Azilda home retrofit centre: a catalyst for a carbon neutral future in Northeastern Ontario commuter communities
This thesis proposes a system-based approach to creating affordable and sustainable home retrofits
in commuter communities in Northeastern Ontario, more specifically in the community of Azilda. Architecture
2030 has stated that “The urban built environment is responsible for 75% of annual global greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions: buildings alone amount for 39%.”
Architecture must play an active role in reducing GHG emissions or the climate crisis will worsen. Addressing climate change is a worldwide effort and is much more attainable through specific municipal level initiatives, or programs. The Home Retrofit Centre proposed within this thesis is a small part of a larger system working towards mitigating further climate change, by focusing on lowering the carbon emissions of residential buildings in Azilda. With linkage to students and professors from the McEwen School of Architecture and the City of Greater Sudbury, the Centre will provide locals with resources
on how to improve the efficiency of their homes. In The Philosophy of Sustainable Design, Jason McLennan
defines sustainable design as “the philosophy that seeks to maximize the quality of the built environment,
while minimizing or eliminating negative impacts to the natural environment.”
Retrofitting existing homes will improve the built environment while also reducing the house’s carbon emissions, which will minimize the negative impacts they have had on the environment. A significant part of reducing carbon emissions from buildings relates to embodied and operational carbon, which is produced throughout the entire life cycle of a building. To lower the embodied and operational carbon of the existing homes in Azilda, the Home Retrofit Centre will allow older homes to take on a new life and become more efficient. These retrofits will create a more comfortable and healthy home, update the style, save on energy costs, and more importantly, take action in response to climate change. Retrofitting a home also increases its economic resale value making these changes an investment for the future.
For this Home Retrofit Centre to be a success it will need to gently nudge the community in this
cultural shift of wanting to improve their homes in a way that will also help with climate change. Most homes
will eventually require retrofits or renovations, that is inevitable. This thesis will investigate how the architecture
of the Home Retrofit Centre can be a positive catalyst to address the needs of the community and climate
change. It will endeavour to answer these questions: How can architecture be a catalyst for these retrofits? And
can the Home Retrofit Centre itself showcase and inspire community members to implement retrofit strategies
in their own homes in order to guide Azilda into a carbon-neutral future? Beyond simply being a Home Retrofit
Centre, it will also become a hub for community activities and resources through the use of cross programming,
including a Café, Re-use Store, market area, workshops, and multi-use spaces
