Giigido (s/he speaks in Ojibwe): an architectural exploration of Ojibwe language learning in the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation
Acknowledging the endangered state of Indigenous Languages
situated in the colonial narrative of Canada, this thesis investigates
the capabilities of architecture as a tool to support existing language
revitalization strategies. It presents a process of knowledge gathering,
recording, and interpretation that identifies key concepts inherent to
language and identity. Investigating topics through a lens of actions
and processes, the body of knowledge is analyzed through the act of
making. As a result of first-hand material explorations and community
consultations, this thesis proposes an architectural typology unique
to the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation community. The
proposed typology represents a spatial interpretation of the Ojibwe
language, inherently criticizing the continuously imposed Western
concept of education and imposed architectural designs. As a kit
of parts, the proposal is fully adaptable to meet the community’s
needs and is intended to complement their residential expansion and

Geochemistry of gold from Ontario gold deposits
Gold is one of the most crucial metals in human history, and still, few investigations have directly studied
gold composition to understand gold systems. Ontario (Canada) provides a natural example of gold
systems because of the abundance and distribution of world class gold deposits. The present study
constrains the geochemical signature of free gold using SEM-EDS, EPMA and LA-ICP-MS to characterize
242 samples from 71 gold deposits and occurrences. Generally, Ag, Cu, and Hg occur over 100 ppm, with
Sb, Pd, Cd, and Bi typically as trace elements between 0.001 and 100 ppm. The geochemical signature of
gold varies at the craton scale but is consistent at the camp scale. These spatially distinct trace element
signatures are independent of local host rock and deposit types, which have implications regarding the
controls on ore-forming mechanisms and reflect district-scale variations in the primary and secondary
composition of gold. This elemental signature has important practical applications for industry; for example,
in using elemental vectors that reflect local gold composition and/or in metallurgical processing.Master of Science (MSc) in Geolog
Detecting fake accounts on Instagram using machine learning and hybrid optimization algorithms
In this thesis, we propose a hybrid method for detecting fake accounts on Instagram by using the
Binary Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm (BGWO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). By
combining these two algorithms, we aim to leverage their complementary strengths and enhance
the overall optimization performance. We evaluate the proposed hybrid method by using four
classifiers, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), K-Nearest Neighbor
(KNN), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The dataset used for the experiments contains
65329 Instagram accounts. We extract features from each account, including profile information,
posting behavior, and engagement metrics by feature selection using PSO. The results show that
the Hybrid optimization method (BGWOPSO) significantly outperformed both Binary Grey Wolf
Optimization (BGWO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) methods when using several
performance measures including accuracy, precision, recall, and AUC selecting the best optimal

Providing social work support for women experiencing perinatal mental health challenges
In the perinatal period, a woman’s likelihood to experience the onset of mental health
concerns, and the relapse of previous mental health conditions, are at the highest point in her life
(Canadian Perinatal Mental Health Collaborative, 2021). It is estimated that approximately 1 in 4
Canadian women will experience a perinatal mental health challenge in their lifetime (Gheorghe
et al., 2021). Considering that many symptoms of perinatal mental health concerns are not
reported due to stigma, fear of child apprehension, and inadequacies of and oppression in
services (Wisner et al., 2013; Nieves, 2015), researchers believe the actual occurrence is double
(Carberg, 2022). Understanding women’s experiences of perinatal mental health experiences, and
how social workers can best support them, was the primary intention motivating my 450-hour
advanced practicum at Maternal Health Niagara (MHN). MHN is a private practice focused on
providing therapeutic care to individuals in the perinatal period and beyond, with specific work
including fertility, pregnancy and infant loss, trauma, and more. In this report, I discuss and
reflect upon my ability to reach my learning goals, answer questions from the onset, and support
women in this population, while applying anti-oppressive and critical feminist social justice
frameworks. Within this paper, I work to contextualize and problematize the external oppressive
barriers within systems women have to navigate and illuminate a shift from society blaming
women to supporting and empowering them. I present my learnings derived from the literature,
my practicum experience at MHN, and personal reflections
Design and development of a Mars-Rover model as a pedagogical tool for pupils in elementary school
This paper is about making a simulated Mars-rover model robot for pupils’ education from
scratch, The robot is controlled based on the Arduino platform. The robot building starts from
the construction of the chassis. Six wheels and independent drives are installed. A 4-degree-of-
freedom robotic arm and 3D-printed gripper are installed. The pixy2 camera, distance sensor and
other sensors are installed. By programming this robot, when one object is captured by the
camera, the robot will reach the object through 6 wheels, put down the mechanical arm, pick up
the object, and transport it to the designated location. It is a comprehensive project with multiple
components working together to complete the goal. The robot can also be manually controlled
via Bluetooth. It is an educational robot which will be placed in the science museum and is
suitable for showing and introducing knowledge to students
The role of preexisting anisotropies in focusing deformation in an Archean intrusion-related Au deposit: a case study from the Upper Beaver Au-Cu deposit, Ontario, Canada
The ca. 2680 Ma Upper Beaver deposit is an Archean intrusion-related gold-copper deposit located
in the southern Abitibi greenstone belt between Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake, Canada.
Mineralization is centered on the intermediate Upper Beaver Intrusive Complex which was
emplaced in the hanging wall of an extensional listric fault early during Timiskaming basin
formation. During subsequent deformation events, alteration, preexisting planar anisotropies, and
the orientation and composition of the ore zones enhanced strain partitioning, controlling the
development of folds, boudins and fabrics in strained ore zones. Steeply-dipping, sericite-altered
ore zones, oriented parallel to cross-stratal dikes, developed a continuous foliation surrounding
boudinaged and recrystallized quartz-calcite-anhydrite veins, whereas strong, shallowly-dipping,
stratiform, garnet-epidote-amphibole skarnoid ore zones developed a wavy, disjunctive cleavage
and deformed mainly by folding. The Upper Beaver deposit can be used as a guide for interpreting
the development of structures in similar but more complexly deformed deposits along major
deformation zones
Assessments of genetic and reproductive health in Canada’s endangered Oregon Spotted Frog (Rana pretiosa)
Zoological institutions are increasingly relied upon for ex situ management of species at risk,
with conservation breeding and reintroduction programs providing both assurance against
extinction and a reliable source of offspring to reinforce wild population sizes. Ex situ efforts
face many challenges, however. One often overlooked challenge is balancing genetic priorities,
like retaining genetic diversity and reducing inbreeding, with reproductive priorities, like mate
compatibility and reliable breeding, both of which are required for a successful program. Like
many amphibians, the Oregon Spotted Frog (Rana pretiosa) is highly threatened in its native
habitat and ongoing conservation breeding and reintroduction programs are experiencing
limited success; the genetic sustainability of these populations remains unassessed. In this
study, I evaluated the genetic health of both zoo and wild populations of R. pretiosa in Canada
and investigated some potential causes of the ongoing ex situ reproductive failures associated
with egg binding. I found that zoos have maintained stable genetic metrics relative to their wild
sources, but ongoing collections from wild populations should be reassessed due to low genetic
diversity available therein. No clear causes of egg binding were elucidated but I found older
female frogs (> 3 years old) who became egg bound generally had a higher body mass than
conspecifics, while body mass did not differ in females becoming egg bound in their first
breeding season (2-3 years old). This suggests frogs should be monitored for egg binding and
changes in body condition differently depending on their age. Overall, there were no significant
differences in genetic or reproductive health across the three zoo conservation breeding
populations, but scaled mass index was significantly lower in the zoo with larger holding tanks
and less genetic management: a reminder of the importance of husbandry and environment in
conservation breeding program outcomes. The costs and benefits of strict genetic management
vs. a more communal breeding approach should be carefully considered in light of these results.
Along with more cohesion, communication is required between all involved institutions to have
an effective impact on the conservation of Oregon Spotted Frogs in Canada, the
recommendations discussed here have applicability to amphibian ex situ programs worldwide.Master of Science (MSc) in Biolog
Movement legacy: a bioethical and epigenetically grounded architectural framework for healthy lifestyle change
New research in neuroscience, environmental psychology, and
medicine have revealed factors in the built environment that
improve health, however, these are not yet widely understood or
adopted by the design community. A novel approach that better
leverages the scientific literature to inform design is required.
Recent discoveries in epigenetics reveal the immense impact our
environment has on intergenerational human health through the
process of epigenomic editing and the resultant genetic expression.
This thesis argues that design and health are inextricably linked
to bioethical questions that require deeper exploration and ought
to compel designers to reframe their role and responsibility in
community health. A new theoretical framework is developed
that aligns design elements at multiple scales with evidence-based
principles, which elicit positive health outcomes through increased
physical activity prevalence. Informed by the framework, a network
of design interventions for Sudbury, Ontario, demonstrates how

Investigation of the effect of acute radiation on enteroendocrine L-cell health and function
Radiation enteropathy is a commonly observed syndrome induced by abdominal and pelvic
radiation therapy characterized by acute and/or chronic pain and loss of proper gut function.
Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2), an important peptide hormone in the enhancement of proper
intestinal function, proliferation of intestinal tissue and inhibition of enterocyte apoptosis, is a
known treatment option of malabsorption disorders of the intestines. Recent developments have
demonstrated that exogenous GLP-2 treatments attenuate and facilitate recovery of radiation-
induced gut injury. This study aims to elucidate the effects of radiation therapy on endogenous
GLP-2 secretion from intestinal L-cells as this is poorly understood. In mice, L-cell counts
remained unchanged 48 hours post-irradiation but total circulating GLP-2 was increased.
Irradiation of in-vitro L-cell models demonstrated a trend of increased hormone secretion at
intermediate doses and significant increase in cell viability and mitochondrial activity. The
stimulatory effect of radiation on L-cell should be investigated in future studies
