Reclaiming birth territory in Northern Ontario: a place-based approach to realizing maternal health architecture
The precipitous decline in local healthcare has entrenched
the singular dimension of centralized, institutional birth settings,
limiting the provision of choice and equitable maternal healthcare
in Northern Ontario. Emerging as a response to this critical
reflection is the resurgence of midwifery-led care, prompting
exploration of architecture’s role in supporting maternal health
in Northern Ontario. This thesis expands beyond the individual
birthroom experience and engages the spatialization of the
maternal continuum of care and sustainable midwifery pedagogy
through regional sensibilities. Its intersection envisions the
architectural framework for maternal health not merely as a
physical place, but as a locale imbued with profound meaning
and value, crafted with responsive, diverse, and meaningful
architecture to empower mothers and midwives. Advocating
for reconceptualizing Birth Centre design, this thesis offers an
architectural framework towards reclaiming Northern Ontario’s
Birth Territory and acts as an enduring catalyst for agency,
dignity, and choice for mothers and their families.Master of Architecture (M.Arch
Fighting the housing crisis in small Ontario communities through medium-density housing
The population boom and the housing
crisis brought on by the present housing
market and housing demand are some of
the major problems small communities in
Southwestern Ontario are facing. In the
past, the real estate market in Southwestern
Ontario’s small towns has been centered
around two extremes. One example of
these extremes is the single-detached
home, which still rules the Ontario real
estate market and is frequently out of reach
for the typical citizen. There is also the
supportive housing market, where people
can get help from their local government
to succeed in daily living. The next concern
is how architecture might help address
the developing housing crisis and give the
expanding population access to affordable
and achievable housing in small towns.
This is accomplished by offering a medium-
density housing option that small towns can
modify to give residents access to housing in
a socially connected neighbourhood.Master of Architecture (M.Arch
The professional hockey arena in the city: an exploration into the symbiotic relationship between a major event centre and the urban fabric
Hockey is more than just a game in Canada; it’s a true passion
that unites millions nationwide. Communities of like-minded people
form into fanbases, supporting ‘their’ team. Often, these fans view
their team’s home stadium or arena as hallowed grounds. Treating
them as sacred spaces for their community to come together
to pronounce their love for their team and the game of hockey.
However, unlike many religious spaces, the arena is only open to
the public for select amounts of time. Comparatively, the arena is
closed to the public far less than it is available, creating a unique
condition within its urban context. Through the arena’s morphology,
the facility’s scale has enlarged to multiple city blocks (800,000 -
1,000,000 square feet) to provide the services required to hold over
17,000 spectators. Additionally, the arena topology is an “inward-
facing architecture” looking away from the street, not emphasizing
creating a daily relationship with its urban context. This thesis looks
to challenge this notion and better understand ways to integrate
the arena into the daily urban environment. The research will use
frameworks that define a successful professional hockey arena: the
history of professional hockey, the socio-cultural impacts of hockey
in Canada, architectural history, and economics. While also looking
at concepts to better integrate the arena in its urban context from
symbiosis, community engagement, and street-level architecture.
These frameworks will then be synthesized into a new professional
arena proposal in Ottawa, Ontario. Ultimately, the question guiding
the research is: how can a National Hockey League (NHL) arena have
a symbiotic relationship with its urban context in the downtown core
of Ottawa?Master of Architecture (M.Arch
Antibacterial activity of green, photosynthetic microalgae and associated secondary metabolites produced by cultivation in extreme environments
Green microalgae are vastly diverse unicellular, eukaryotic, and photosynthetic organisms
that reside in freshwater, marine and terrestrial environments. Microalgae produce metabolites for
growth and survival, including fatty acids, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, phenolics and pigments.
Some of these compounds possess antimicrobial bioactivities such as antibacterial, antifungal,
antiviral, and antioxidant which are valuable for industrial application as pharmaceuticals and
dietary supplements.
The production of bioactive metabolites can be enhanced or modified by abiotic stress
conditions such as pH, temperature, salinity, nutrients, and heavy metal concentrations. The
influence of abiotic stress conditions on the production of metabolites and antibacterial bioactivity
of wild microalgal strains from extraordinarily extreme environments has been investigated.
Microalgae collected from various acidic, anthropogenically influenced waterbodies were
cultivated at acidic and neutral pH to identify and compare the metabolic profile and antibacterial
bioactivity of extremophilic microalgae.
Microalgae from extreme environments exhibited promising antibacterial activity against
predominantly Gram-positive bacteria, most prominently B. cereus, and in some cases against
Gram-negative bacteria, such as E. coli. Cultivation at low pH influenced the metabolite profile of
acid tolerant microalgae cultures, promoting lipid and fatty acid accumulation with significant
negative correlation (r) linking decreasing medium pH with increasing fatty acid content. This
work is valuable in identifying abiotic cultivation conditions for the enhanced production of
desired, bioactive metabolites that could be applied in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc) in Engineering Scienc
The use of coaching as an intervention framework in clinical social work practice
Coaching is an emerging social work practice movement that provides a different lens
to support complexities that clients and families experience. Utilizing a solution-focused
approach, coaching is an adaptable strategy that can support the work clinicians provide to
clients and families in need of support. This advanced practicum final report will provide a
detailed analysis of the coaching research and practice that has been conducted during my
advanced practicum placement at Thrive Child and Development Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.
My advanced practicum was supported through the use of social work theories that I
implemented within practice including anti-oppressive practice and pragmatism.
Within this final report, research on different realms of coaching has been explored and
the relation of these realms of coaching to my primary research focus. Other additions include a
comprehensive literature review that will cover an expansive range of coaching related methods,
ranging from coaching in social work, coaching in business and professional sectors, and how
coaching can utilize social work methodology to sustain its approaches within clinical practice.
As a primary focus of this practicum, the use of reflexivity was explored and implemented as a
guiding position during my studies. Reflexivity provided the opportunity to reflect and be aware
of my practicum environment and the experiences that were provided. To conclude this final
practicum report I will discuss the outcomes of my practicum and how it has influenced my
helping skills within social work practice.Master of Social Work (MSW
Humane architecture: rethinking prison design using rehabilitative principles for a better tomorrow
Ontario correctional facilities are in crisis. With overcrowding,
poor living conditions, an increase in the number of inmate
deaths, high rearrest rates, a lack of resources, as well as
outdated and inhumane design principles, this system is in
dire need of new institutions that prioritize rehabilitation rather
than isolation. Research suggests that humane treatment of
convicted individuals while incarcerated directly influences
their success and the safety within their surrounding
communities upon their eventual release. This thesis
investigates these research claims further and proposes
the design of a medium-security prison, using rehabilitative
design principles, in an attempt to provide inmates with an
opportunity to grow, to prepare them for positive contribution
to society, and to answer the question, “How can architectural
design promote wellness within correctional facilities and aid
in the rehabilitation of inmates to prepare them for release?”Master of Architecture (M.Arch
Survival to sustainable care: mono-material timber autonomous hybrid shelters to ensure houseless human dignity and address societal stigma
In Canada, unhoused individuals face systemic
problems that lead to a lack of care. Although
housing is a human right, municipalities
struggle to provide solutions to prevent
houselessness, but also unshelteredness,
leaving many to survive in difficult conditions,
especially in winter. Considering the lack of
affordable housing and the shortcomings of
the regulated shelters, we need to provide a new
shelter option that addresses the urgent needs
of those who are not looked after. This thesis is
informed by research regarding the challenges
of unhoused individuals, the solutions to
reduce negative societal perspectives and
stigmatization, case studies of innovative
autonomous shelter options, and innovative
building strategies. The outcomes lead to the
design of mono-material timber autonomous
hybrid shelters built by community members
and integrated acupuncturally on various sites
in Sudbury (Ontario) to ensure survival and
human dignity, address stigma, and create a
socially, economically and environmentally
sustainable system of care.Master of Architecture (M.Arch
Radon production in the EXO-200 recirculation loop
EXO–200 was a 0νββ experiment which has completed data taking and
its next generation nEXO is currently in the design phase. In the enriched
liquid Xenon of EXO–200 a steady state of 170 ± 31 222Rn atoms was ob-
served which contributed to the background of the detector.
This thesis is concerned with finding the source of the radon atoms in the
Xenon of EXO–200. It is done through a post-mortem analysis of the plumb-
ing emanation. A majority of the plumbing was reconstructed replacing the
detection chamber with a Radon detector known as an Electrostatic Counter
(ESC) that detects alpha decay products. Several experiments were done
with different configurations of the plumbing. Different configurations were
compared against each other by blank subtraction to single out components
of interest, specifically the purifiers and gas purity monitors (GPMs). New
efficiencies for the ESC were calculated for the new detector configuration.
The reassembled plumbing generally, showed an average steady-state
222Rn population of 222 ± 62 atoms which is consistent with what EXO-
200 observed during operation. The purifiers averaged a 222Rn activity of
33 ± 23 atoms (6.1 ± 4.2 dpd, 1 dpd= 0.012 mBq, where dpd is decays per
day). The GPMs showed a 222Rn activity consistent with zero. An estimate
was made of the activity from wetted stainless steel surfaces, it was found,
but not proven conclusively, that these surfaces could be the dominant back-
ground contributor. Thus the major contributor to the background appears
to be external to the purifiers and GPMs, it is expected that this contributor
is the wetted stainless steel surfaces.Master of Science (MSc) in Physic
Comparative analysis of physiotherapy practices : navigating credentialing for Mexican physiotherapists in Ontario
This paper examines the multifaceted factors influencing the migration decisions of
Mexican physiotherapists considering relocation to Ontario, Canada. With a focus on addressing
critical workforce shortages amidst Ontario's growing population, this study draws upon existing
literature and empirical data to identify pivotal elements shaping migration choices. Analysis
reveals the significance of linguistic and cultural affinities, challenges inherent in qualification
recognition processes, and barriers to professional integration. Through a comprehensive
examination of these factors, the paper underscores the complexities of international migration
within the physiotherapy sector and advocates for targeted policy interventions.
Recommendations include streamlining credentialing procedures and bolstering cultural and
linguistic support mechanisms to effectively address workforce deficiencies in Ontario's
physiotherapy domain. This research contributes significant insights into the dynamics of
international migration and its implications for healthcare workforce planning.Master of Human Kinetics (MHK
