Establishing a mechanism for the effects of specific patterned electromagnetic fields at the molecular level using fragmented bacteria
Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are a physical property resulting from the movement of charged particles, have elicited behavioral changes. Changes at the microscopic level have yet to be observed. In the present study, the objective was to determine if EMFs have an effect on biological matter and to determine the mechanism producing the change. Bacterial species were an ideal candidate for this type of research, as their rapid growth permitted extensive experimentation. Four separate species of bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Serratia marcescens) were lysed to destroy their cellular integrity, exposed to one of three EMF conditions (Sham, Thomas-EMF, LTP-EMF) for 60 minutes, and analyzed using spectroscopic techniques. The effects of the EMFs were ascertained by analyzing the absorbance and fluorescence of biological matter pre and post treatment. Results demonstrated that there was approximately a 10-15% increase in absorbance for solutions exposed to an EMF condition compared to sham. The results indicate that the EMF exposure had no significant impact on the fluorescence of the biological matter within the solution. Biological matter from the different bacterial species had a significant impact on their fluorescence. Implications for these results regarding the theory of abiogenesis shall be discussed.Honours Essa

A First Nation model of Mishkauziwin [strength; resilience] : the revitalization of family/clan identity in an Anishnaabe family of Northwestern Ontario.
This thesis uses a family-directed approach to study the topic of resilience through an extended Anishnaabe family’s perceptions of their mishkauziwin [strength; resilience] as they strive to revitalize their family/clan identity. The interdisciplinary/qualitative/indigenist study braids together complementary ways of research from indigenous knowledges and the Western academy in a participatory framework.
The perceptions of participants in studies on resilience are often sidelined, as are aspects of Aboriginal realities often missing from mainstream views of resilience in Aboriginal contexts. The perceptions of research participants in this study are the core-organizing feature of the research as they look at their relationships, traditional practices, and indigenous knowledge. The study contributes significantly to Anishnaabe communities and individuals as well as expands the body of knowledge on the topic of resilience in general. The study examines systemic issues impacting the lived experiences of participants, reviews the topic of historical
trauma as it relates to the family participants, inquires into cultural identity issues, and works to comprehend the ecological view in Aboriginal contexts.
The themes, patterns and metaphors of resilience from an Anishnaabe family’s perceptions serve to clarify significant findings about mishkauziwin, illustrating the process of restoration of family/clan identity as that of a strength based process which carries with it significant protective factors. The work together reaffirmed the value of a knowledge study emerging from the ground up as contrasted with top down approaches. Some aspects of the revitalization pro cess can be viewed as a grieving process, indicating that mishkauziwin means strength for healing and is the impetus for forward movement despite
colonization and historical trauma. Mishkauziwin is evident in the connections within and between families, in aspects of spirituality, clan roles, cultural traditions, survival, and love. Themes of restoring lost identity through connections to each other and their land, language,
and traditional culture are evident. Clan identity and the family revitalization are embedded in these processes, as are other protective factors, such as education, and spiritual and cultural factors, which modulate the effects of loss. This confirms findings of other research on resilience in Aboriginal contexts, and gives direction for future research

Application of GenRel for maintainability analysis of underground mining equipment: based on case studies of two hoist systems
With the increasing costs of extracting ores, mines are becoming more
mechanized and automated. Mechanization and automation can make
considerable contributions to mine productivity, but equipment failures and
maintenance have an impact on the profit. Implementing maintenance at suitable
time intervals can save money and improve the reliability and maintainability of
mining equipment. This thesis focuses on maintainability prediction of mining
machinery. For this purpose, a software tool, GenRel, was developed at the
Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL). GenRel is based
on the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) to simulate the failure/repair
occurrences during the operational life of equipment. In GenRel it is assumed that
failures of mining equipment caused by an array of factors follow the biological
evolution theory. GenRel then simulates the failure occurrences during a time
period of interest using genetic algorithms (GAs) coupled with a number of
statistical techniques. This thesis will show the applicability and limitation of
GenRel through case studies, especially in using discrete probability distribution
function.
One of the objectives of this thesis is to improve GenRel. A discrete probability
distribution function named Poisson is added in the pool of available probabilities
functions. After improving and enhancing GenRel, the author carries out two
groups of case studies. The objectives of the case studies include an assessment
of the applicability of GenRel using real-life data and an investigation of the
relationship between data size and prediction results. Discrete and continuous
distribution functions will be applied on the same input data. The data used in
case studies is compiled from failure records of two hoist systems at different

mine sites from the Sudbury area in Ontario, Canada.
The first group of case studies involves maintainability analysis and predictions
for a 3-month operating period and a six-month operating period of a hoist system.
The second group of case studies investigates the applicability of GenRel as a
maintainability analysis tool using historical failure/repair data from another mine
hoist system in three different time periods, three months, six months and one
year. Both groups apply two different distribution probability functions (discrete
and continuous) to investigate the best fit of the applied data sets, and then make
a comparative analysis. In each case study, a statistical test is carried out to
examine the similarity between the predicted data set with the real-life data set in
the same time period. In all case studies, no significant impact of the data size on
the applicability of GenRel was observed. In continuous distribution fitting,
GenRel demonstrated its capability of predicting future data with data size
ranging from 166 to 762. In discrete probability fitting, the case studies indicated
to a degree the applicability of GenRel for the hoist systems at Mine A and Mine
B.
In the discussion and conclusion sections, the author discloses the findings from
the case studies and suggests future research direction
L'éducation physique et sportive au primaire au Bénin et au Congo: une étude comparée en termes de régulation des apprentissages
L'objectif de cette étude est de comparer la pratique enseignante de deux enseignantes du primaire évolutant dans deux approches curriculaires différentes. Essentiellement, il s'agit de comparer les contenus enseignés et surtout les mécanismes de guidage, de contrôle et d'ajustement des actions des élèves opérés par ces deux enseignantes en s'intéressants aux variables didactiques manipulées par elles. La théorie de l'action conjointe en didactique (TACD) (Sensevy, 2007, 2011) a servi de cadre conceptuel à la recherche dans une perspective à la fois transpositoire et comparatiste. De l'analysie des résultats, on note l'existence d'écart entre les contenus à enseigner et ceux réellement enseignés, ainsi qu'au niveau de la démarche d'enseignement et d'apprentissage. En termes de régulation didactique, les stratégies régulatrices et organisationnelles semblent renvoyer aux usages professionnels des enseignantes en lien avec le paradigme dans le quel s'inscrit leur pratique éducative
The social construction of anorexia and bulimia nervosa with a focus on pro-ana and pro-mia websites.
This research looks at the social construction of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. A discourse and content analysis of pro-anorexia and pro-bulimia websites was conducted to determine whether or not this sub-culture and group of individuals fulfilled the criteria of a social movement. Findings found that individuals living a pro-ana and pro-mia lifestyle choice demonstrated various forms of resistance against the discourses and practices defining anorexia and bulimia as illnesses. With the information gathered in relation to the theoretical approach to social movements, pro-ana culture seems to fulfill
the dimensions to be considered a proto social movement
Understanding modifiable determinants of fatigue from a physiological perspective in Canadian FireRangers
Ontario FireRangers exhibit high annual injury rates and cite fatigue as a contributor, however
several factors influence fatigue, including: energy expenditure, energy intake, stress levels and
recovery time. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the accuracy of heart rate variability
(HRV) based estimates of energy expenditure (kilocalories) and to then assess energy balance,
physiological responses, and nutritional quality in Ontario FireRangers during different types of
fire deployments. Firstbeat Bodyguard2 and Zephyr BioHarness3 monitors were used to collect
HRV data, and individual audio-visual food logs were kept using an iPod Touch and analyzed in
NutriBase Pro11 software. Sleep quantity was also measured using actisleep monitors, to assist
with energy expenditure calculations. The findings of this research support the use of HRV
monitoring for free-living, energy expenditure estimation. Furthermore, this research indicates
that Ontario FireRangers exhibit high daily energy demands, under-consume kilocalories, deviate
from ideal nutrient consumption profiles and have varying levels of stress and recovery time,
depending on deployment type
