Cataract surgery: impact on activities, time use and gender and power relations in rural Andhra Pradesh, India

    No full text
Social customs and the patriarchal structure of Indian society determine women’s intrahousehold status. Vision loss due to cataracts and post-surgery recovery of vision may contribute to changes in the manner in which women experience societal norms and practices, and may have an impact on gender and power relations and socio-economic status within the household. No studies which take into account socio-cultural factors and economic status have examined the impact of cataract surgery (i) on activities and (ii) time use, and (iii) on gender and power relations in rural households in Andhra Pradesh, India. This project determines what changes if any occur in gender and power relations in families in rural households in Andra Pradesh after a member has undergone cataract surgery. Qualitative analyses were performed to explore participants’ perspectives and understand the extent to which gender and power relations may change after cataract surgery. The narrative analysis showed that the profiles of the women and men in the younger and older age groups were quite different, yet there were also similarities. Certain patterns emerged following cataract surgery. While decision-making patterns did not change substantially, all participants stated that their mobility had improved after surgery and this led to a corresponding improvement in their quality of life. In addition, the quality of relationships improved for two of the women and two of the men. In addition to the narrative analysis, qualitative data from the participants assisted with understanding the complex issues related to gender and power relationships through a thematic analysis. For the most part, family composition and living arrangements did not change much as a result of cataract surgery. These matters were largely determined by customs and norms. Indeed, many of the participants described how they were able to perform various tasks, once again due to improvement in their vision. Both men and women spoke about their ability to engage in household work after the surgery. However, as women performed most of this work, cataract surgery had a greater impact on this aspect of life for women. Cataract surgery and improved vision did not have a substantial impact on gender and power relations within the context of intra-household matters as broader gender roles were more influential in this domain. Cataract sufferers were more satisfied with their lives and the benefits from surgery. Improvements in quality of life and in the activities of the participants are supported by my research findings

    No full text
This thesis explores the health, safety and training of temporary staffing agency employees working in surface mining operations, specific to Sudbury, Ontario. The study involves a qualitative approach that utilized one on one interviews, where participants were achieved through snowball sampling. Thematic analysis was employed through the careful review of the interview transcriptions in order to find common responses among the respondents. The commonalities of responses have identified numerous areas of concern that could be shared among other temporary staffing agency workers in surface mining. Themes identified include: precariousness, issues with training, workplace responsibility, individual and co-worker safety, unionization, and participation in health and safety. Participants have expressed problematic experiences within these themes that should be considered for further research and as areas for possible improvement by temporary staffing agencies

Numerical analysis of porous piezoelectric materials

Three-dimensional finite element models based on unit-cell approach are developed to characterize the complete electromechanical properties of: (i) zero-dimensional (3-0), one-dimensional (3-1) and three-dimensional (3-3) type porous piezoelectric structures made of lead zirconium titanate (PZT-7A) and relaxor (PMN-PT based) ferroelectrics (RL); and (ii) 3-3 type porous piezoelectric foam structures made of several classes of piezoelectric materials such as barium sodium niobate (BNN), barium titanate (BaTiO3) and relaxor (PMN-PT based) ferroelectrics (RL). In this thesis, finite element software named ABAQUS is used to characterize the electromechanical response of 3-0, 3-1 and 3-3 type porous piezoelectric structures. Appropriate boundary conditions are invoked for various porous piezoelectric structures (i.e. 3-0, 3-1 and 3-3 type) to ensure that the electromechanical deformation response of the unit-cell, under conditions of electrical and mechanical loading, is representative of the entire porous piezoelectric structures. Overall, this thesis demonstrates that the microstructural features such as porosity connectivity, porosity aspect ratio, porosity volume fraction, foam shape, and material selection play significant roles on the electromechanical properties and the figures of merit of porous piezoelectric structures

Regional 3D geophysical investigation of the Sudbury Structure

This paper is © 2019 Society of Exploration Geophysicists. The posting is available free of charge and its use is subject to the SEG terms and conditions: https://seg.org/Terms-of-UseThe 3D geologic and structural setting of the Sudbury Structure was predicted by an integration of surface and subsurface geologic data with 2.5D modeling of high-resolution airborne magnetic and gravity data using 3D GeoModeller software. Unlike other CAD-based 3D software, GeoModeller uses the field interpolator method, whereby contacts of rock units are assumed to be equipotential surfaces, whereas orientation data determine the gradient and direction of the surfaces. Contacts and orientation variables are cokriged to generate 3D continuous surfaces for each geologic unit. Our 3D geologic model was qualitatively evaluated by forward computing the predicted gravity response at 1 m above topography and by comparing this response to the measured gravity field. Large-scale structures within the Onaping Formation and Archean basement, which overlie and underlie the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC), respectively, were not the cause of the linear gravity high in the center of the Sudbury Structure. We suggested that the deformation of the initial circular SIC may have commenced under the Sudbury Basin due to the reversal of the normal faults related to the Huronian rift system during the Penokean orogeny, therefore resulting into a north verging fold at the base of the SIC in the south range. This new interpretation was consistent with the magnetic and gravity data and honoured most of the significant seismic reflectors in the Lithoprobe seismic sections.NSERC, Vale, Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, KGHM International, Wallbridge Min- ing, and the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovatio

Perceived importance of professional competencies for admission to the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario

    Get PDF
Background: For more than a decade, the development of professional competencies has been at the heart of curriculum reforms in Education and Health care training worldwide. Reference documents of competencies have been developed in Australia (Brownie, Thomas, McAllister, & Groves, 2014), Canada (Boucher & Ste-Marie, 2013; Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, 2005), United-States (Hurd & Buschbom, 2010), and in Europe (Battel-Kirk, Van der Zanden & al., 2012). In most of these reference documents, the number of professional competencies that a professional must acquire does not exceed twenty. However, in the field of kinesiology, the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario (CKO) (2013) has defined 54 professional competencies required for admittance to the College. Objective: The purpose of this research project aims to identify, from the standpoint of university instructors who teach in a kinesiology program, the professional competencies that are considered the 17 most relevant from those suggested by CKO. Methodology: Participants (N=23) were required to complete an online survey on the domain www.SurveyMonkey.com in order to determine the competencies deemed most important by them. Results: The quantitative data obtained through the use of the surveys allowed for a list of 17 competencies to be retained at the end of the study. The qualitative data provided by the participants supported and complemented the quantitative data. Conclusion: The competencies retained in this study undoubtedly represented the views of all the participants in regards to the essential competencies that a kinesiologist should be able to demonstrate upon admission to the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario

Planaria as a model for the effects of the co-use of alcohol and nicotine

    No full text
Poly drug abuse is the abuse of more than one drug, often simultaneously, and is common in many drug-abusers in real-life conditions (Raffa, 2008). The co-use of alcohol and cigarettes is especially prevalent among heavy drinkers such as those diagnosed with alcoholism or alcohol abuse (Bobo & Husten, 2000). The purpose of this study is to gain further insight into the potential mechanisms involved in the poly-drug abuse of alcohol and cigarettes by observing the withdrawal effects of each individual drug versus the combined drugs in the planarian flatworm. Planarian locomotor velocity (pLMV) and atypical behaviours are the behavioural paradigms used in this experiment to quantify the withdrawal effects observed. Results reveal a complex relationship between alcohol and nicotine with interactions between concentration and exposure time to influence the poly-drug relationship.Honours Essa
