Personality and cognition of pornographic offenders; a comparison to sexual and general offenders
The purpose of the current study is to determine if there are unique personality or cognitive characteristics to help distinguish pornographic offenders from other sexual and general offenders. The participants consist of 45 male offenders, over the age of 18, who have been convicted of viewing child pornography (9), sexual assault (16) or general assault (20). Each of the offenders was also classified by whether they were first time offenders or had prior offenses. Each offender had previously been administered the following two psychometric tests: The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence. The results of this study aim to determine if pornographic offenders have exclusive traits to help create proper treatment and preventative programs.Honours Essa
Keeping girls in the gym : an examination of the reasons why females choose not to participate in high school physical education
With the changes of removal of mandatory participation in physical education
(PE) classes and topics taught in these classes, there has been a decline in the
participation rate across the board, but most specifically in the female population (Dwyer
et al., 2006). With concerns of obesity, inactivity, and mental health issues on the rise, it
is necessary to look at why these individuals are not participating. The purpose of this
paper is to understand why female high school students do not enroll in senior elective
PE classes. An extensive review of current PE literature, combined with a survey/focus
group pilot project in Sudbury, Ontario was completed to help determine these reasons.
The results of this paper indicate that there are three overarching themes as to why
females are not continuing after the mandatory grade 9 class: 1) body image, 2)
confidence in athletic abilities, and 3) curriculum and teaching styles. Within these
themes, female students feel they should be comfortable and confident with themselves
before immersing themselves into PE classes. Additionally, students believe that the
content of classes should be adapted to suit current needs of students and promote lifelong
health and activity participation. Students are not necessarily finding satisfaction
and usefulness in the basketball, soccer and volleyball based gym classes, so it is
important that schools consider implementing more individual and everyday activities
such as hiking, yoga, swimming, etc. These may be the very activities that allow students
to feel successful in the classroom and develop habits for necessary participation as they
leave high school and move towards adulthood
Treatment with extracts of Uncaria tomentosa promotes apoptosis in the human breast cancer cell line, MCF7.
Uncaria tomentosa is a medicinal plant native to Peru which has been used traditionally for the treatment of various inflammatory disorders and cancer. Some studies have shown that treatment with Uncaria tomentosa promotes repair of cellular DNA in patients treated with chemotherapy drugs, preventing mutations and cell damage. Treatment with Uncaria tomentosa also inhibits inflammatory responses by inhibiting the proliferation of T and B-lymphocytes and decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α). We have examined the effects of Uncaria tomentosa extracts on the growth of malignant cells such as MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, human breast cancer cell lines and non-malignant cells such as HBL-100, HEK 293T and HSG cells. Our results have shown that treatment of malignant cells and non-malignant cells with Uncaria tomentosa extracts inhibits their proliferation and promotes cell death in a dose-dependent manner. Further, extracts produced by boiling the ground bark in 70% ethanol are much more effective than extracts produced by boiling in water. Uncaria tomentosa-ethanol extracts potently induce cellular apoptosis as measured by changes in cell morphology, chromatin condensation (Acridine Orange/Ethidium Bromide staining assay) and DNA fragmentation (TUNEL assays) within 24 h of treatment. Overall, Uncaria tomentosa appeared to kill breast cancer cells effectively in vitro by increasing cellular apoptosis
Estimation of confined peak strength for highly interlocked jointed rockmasses
The determination of rockmass strength for mining has become critically important in recent
years due to the increase in the number of projects at depths exceeding 1500 m. The commonly
used empirical approaches for the estimation of rockmass strength are primarily based on
experiences at shallow depths (< 1500 m) and from observations of rockmass behaviours at low
confinement (e.g., tunnel wall failure). Therefore, the application of these techniques for
estimating the strength of rockmasses when highly interlocked and confined (e.g., pillar cores) is
hypothesized to be flawed. The goal of this research is to develop reliable means of estimating
the confined strength of highly interlocked jointed rockmasses.
A two-dimensional code based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM) and its embedded Grainbased
Model (GBM) is used to simulate the behaviour of a highly interlocked jointed rockmass
to better understand its Strength Degradation (SD) from intact rock with increasing confinement.
The GBM is first calibrated to the laboratory response of intact and granulated marble. The term
"granulated" refers to a heat-treated marble where the cohesion at grain boundaries has been
destroyed. The granulated marble represents an analogue for a highly interlocked jointed
rockmass. The calibrated GBMs are then used to simulate micro-defected and defected rocks and
jointed rockmasses.
The results of triaxial test simulations on the calibrated synthetic rockmass specimens are used to
develop two semi-empirical approaches. In the first approach, called the SD approach, equations
that relate the strength degradation of a jointed rockmass from intact rock to the confinement are
developed. The second approach is based on adjusting the strength parameters of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion to extend its applicability to highly interlocked jointed rockmassess. It is
demonstrated that these two approaches can be used to estimate the confined strength of such
rockmasses in a situation where the unconfined and confined strengths of the intact rock and the
unconfined strength of the rockmass are known.
The findings of this research provides the foundation for a better characterization of the strength
for highly interlocked jointed rockmasses, and increases our understanding of the influence of
confinement on rockmass strength
(De)Constructing the American sport hero: a textual analysis of media representations of Vince Lombardi.
Using the concept of Hegemonic Masculinity, this study seeks to investigate how Vince Lombardi came to embody the values essential to American society during the Cold War. By performing a textual analysis on historic sports media documents taken from the Green Bay Press-Gazette, I argue that sportswriters constructed Lombardi in a fashion that celebrated characteristics of hegemonic masculinity that directly spoke to core American values during the Cold War. In doing so, Lombardi became a national icon, an American sports hero, and a purveyor of social myth, who transformed football into a metaphor for the American way of life within the Cold War period, where “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.”. Although the role of the American sport hero has been investigated before, this is the first time a coach has been critically examined
White Hat Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Structured Web Data for Libraries
“White hat” search engine optimization refers to the practice of publishing web pages that are useful to humans, while enabling search engines and web applications to better understand the structure and content of your website. This article teaches you to add structured data to your website so that search engines can more easily connect patrons to your library locations, hours, and contact information. A web page for a branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library retrieved in January 2015 is used as the basis for examples that progressively enhance the page with structured data. Finally, some of the advantages structured data enables beyond search engine optimization are explored
