    Discours nationalitaires ou cacaphonie discursive? De nouveaux référents identitaires des francophones de Sudbury, 1968-1975.

    Cette thèse cherche à revoir comment les francophones minoritaires de Sudbury se sont adaptés aux remaniements identitaires découlant de la rupture du Canada français. L’historiographie a laissé entendre que l’identité collective franco-ontarienne s’était concrétisée à la fin des années 1960 et au début des années 1970 avec peu de contestation de la part des acteurs qui la modelaient. Par l’entremise d’une analyse journalistique, notre étude révèle qu’il existait en fait une variété de référents identitaires, dont certains étaient plus contestés que d’autres. Bien que les Canadiens-Français de la région aient acquis une certaine autonomie institutionnelle bien plus tôt, celle-ci demeurait largement attachée au projet national canadien-français. Pendant la période à l’étude, les institutions de langue française deviendront davantage un reflet de la région et de ses francophones que celui des projets « nationaux » d’Ottawa. Les francophones de Sudbury réfléchissent également à leur langue : la place de la langue familière, à laquelle s’associaient les jeunes francophones, ne faisait pas l’unanimité alors que le bilinguisme individuel était accepté par tous et que le bilinguisme institutionnel était carrément rejeté. Finalement, ils délaissaient la religion catholique comme référent et comme institution, même s’ils la gardaient largement comme foi. Globalement, le travail permet de comprendre qu'on n’assistait ni à une transformation totale de la référence canadienne-française, ni à une adoption totale de référents franco-ontariens, mais plutôt à une multiplication des référents; un genre d’entre-deux où les référents n’étaient pas nécessairement partagés par l’ensemble des Franco-Ontariens de Sudbury

    Classification approaches for microarray gene expression data analysis

    The technology of Microarray is among the vital technological advancements in bioinformatics. Usually, microarray data is characterized by noisiness as well as increased dimensionality. Therefore, data, that is finely tuned, is a requirement for conducting the microarray data analysis. Classification of biological samples represents the most performed analysis on microarray data. This study is focused on the determination of the confidence level used for the classification of a sample of an unknown gene based on microarray data. A support vector machine classifier (SVM) was applied, and the results compared with other classifiers including K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and neural network (NN). Four datasets of microarray data including leukemia data set, prostate dataset, colon dataset, and breast dataset were used in the research. Additionally, the study analyzed two different kernels of SVM. These were radial kernel and linear kernels. The analysis was conducted by varying percentages of dataset distribution coupled with training and test datasets in order to make sure that the best positive sets of data provided the best results. The 10-fold cross validation method (LOOCV) and the L1 L2 techniques of regularization were used to get solutions for the over-fitting issues as well as feature selection in classification. The ROC curve and a confusion matrix were applied in performance assessment. K-nearest neighbor and neural network classifiers were trained with similar sets of data and comparison of the results was done. The results showed that the SVM exceeded the performance and accuracy compared to other classifiers. For each set of data, support vector machine was the best functional method based on the linear kernel since it yielded better results than the other methods. The highest accuracy of colon data was 83% with SVM classifier, while the accuracy of NN with the same data was 77% and KNN was 72%. Leukemia data had the highest accuracy of 97% with SVM, 85% with NN, and 91% with KNN. For breast data, the highest accuracy was 73% with SVM-L2, while the accuracy was 56% with NN and 47% with KNN. Finally, the highest accuracy of prostate data was 80% with SVM-L1, while the accuracy was 75% with NN and 66% with KNN. It showed the highest accuracy as well as the area under curve compared to k-nearest neighbor and neural network in the three different tests

    Violence in hockey: a social and legal perspective.

    The ongoing debate with regards to the regulation of violence in hockey is analyzed through a legal and social perspective. The main research question touches on whether the law has a role to play in such regulation and how violence can be properly addressed in order to ensure the health and safety of all participants. There is a culture of hockey violence that creates an environment that is tolerable of excessive violence. This thesis addresses excessive violence and considers the player perspective with interview data and vignette research. Interview participants include hockey players at different levels of play. This research demonstrates at what point the law should intervene to regulate hockey violence and makes relevant suggestions on potential improvements in the regulation of violent behaviour in hockey. The goal is to create a framework for criminal courts that face cases of hockey violence

    The protonic brain: engineering a simple brain emulator and investigating physical mechanisms in non-local communication

    The brain is not entirely as it has been described in the classic neuroscientific literature. Physical and chemical properties of brain function can be separated from classical brain structure, allowing for multiple realizations of memory processing and the expression of correlates of consciousness. Further, the brain can be described as energy or information separate from although related to the organic structure which is perhaps subject to technologies which facilitate non-local transfer of data. Chapter 1 introduces the subject and provides sufficient information to explore the major concepts outlined in later sections. Chapter 2 outlines an experimental demonstration of electrophysiological activity in an abiological material which strongly correlates with human quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) frequency spectra under specified geometrical and chemical constraints. In Chapter 3, results indicate that this same amorphous material can effectively store and release information when classically conditioned, indicating learning and network formation can be separated from cells proper. Chapter 4 presents a technology which can effectively link two simple chemical systems such that equal and opposite reactions are induced at locus A upon elicitation of a given event within locus B. Chapter 5 provides a systematic analysis of the electromagnetic field dynamics associated with the aforementioned technology, providing both experimental and theoretical grounding. Chapter 6 is a general discussion which links these concepts and provides a summary of the works as they relate to the protonic brain

    Identifying ICU patient safety priorities within a Northern Ontario setting : a delphi study

    The purpose of this study was to explore patient safety priorities as perceived by clinical experts working in a northern Ontario adult ICU. A modified Delphi was used to elicit consensus regarding patient safety priorities from the perspective of an expert panel of registered nurses and intensivists. At the onset of the study, the consensus level was set at 70%. Data was collected through serials rounds with researcher-developed questionnaires. Descriptive statistical analysis was completed. No consensus was reached at Round 1. Three points of consensus regarding patient safety priorities were reached at Round 2: improving pain and agitation management; incorporating a checklist into the bullet round reporting tool; and implementing use of visual cues for high-risk lines. These strategies support the need for anticipation, recognition, and management of at risk situations. The results have the potential to guide the advancement of the patient safety mandate within an ICU setting

    Neck sense rope system and leaching studies for SNO+.

    SNO+ is a multipurpose scintillation-based neutrino experiment which is located at SNO- LAB, Creighton mine, Sudbury. The primary scientific goal of the experiment is searching for the elusive process of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. In addition to 0vbb decay, SNO+ will be able to detect low energy solar neutrinos, geo- and reactor- anti-neutrinos, as well as supernova neutrinos. During an initial water phase, it will also search for invisible modes of nucleon decay. This thesis briefly introduces neutrino physics and discusses the milestones in chapter 1. Chapter 2 discusses the SNO+ experiment in detail and outlines important developments in SNO+. Furthermore, chapter 3 and chapter 4 describe the two main projects that have been done by the author: i) leaching studies for the SNO+ experiment and ii) the neck sense rope system. Looking for rare events requires very stringent background limits. One of the sources of background originates from 222Rn daughters implanted into the inner surface of the SNO+ acrylic vessel. They can leach into the detector volume and increase the level of internal background. A leaching model has been developed by the author to estimate the activity and contribution to the backgrounds. The model is compatible with the measured value from a lead assay to within 1 sigma. The SNO+ sense rope system is a mechanical system which monitors displacement of the AV neck to within 2mm accuracy. The system has been calibrated and installed underground alongside with the sliding floor. Chapter 4 discusses the system, the performed calibration and the installation procedure in more detail

    Resilience and quality of life of francophone patients living with prostate cancer: an analysis of the situation in Northern Ontario, Canada

    Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer among Canadian men with current statistics estimating that one in eight men will develop this disease during his lifetime and for one in 28, it will be fatal (Canadian Cancer Society, 2014). Using social constructivism as its theoretical underpinning, the purpose of the present study was to develop a theoretical framework illustrating how Francophone men from Northeastern Ontario constructed their prostate cancer experiences. More specifically, this study sought to highlight the impact of this disease and the uncertainty it generates on Francophone patients’ resilience and overall quality of life by uncovering the strategies they utilized to construct and reconstruct their lives upon receipt of their initial diagnosis, to their selected treatment and subsequently, to their current post-treatment realities. The central question that guided this inquiry was: What are the strategies that Northeastern Ontario Francophone men utilize when faced with a diagnosis and subsequent treatment(s) for prostate cancer? This study was guided by a qualitative social constructivist grounded theory design. To collect data, 22 face-to-face, in-depth interviews were conducted with men from eight different communities throughout Northeastern Ontario. All interviews were digitally audio-recorded using two separate digital audio recorders and were transcribed verbatim in the language of the interview. Data were analyzed using the key principles of grounded theory, mainly, constant comparison, data saturation, as well as initial, focused, and theoretical coding. Results from this study highlighted the influence of language and culture on the illness experiences of Francophone prostate cancer patients from Northeastern Ontario. In addition, linguistic preferences and geographic locations were shown to be key considerations that weighed heavily within participants’ treatment decision-making processes. The role of the wife and the role of the primary family physician were also identified as important supports within the context of men’s overall assessment of their cancer experience and the impact of the disease on men’s post-treatment quality of life. Using a variety of formal and informal strategies, participants were able to mitigate some of the negative consequences of the disease and demonstrate resiliency in the face of a challenging and uncertain disease

    Geographic extension of benthic Invertebrate RCA bioassessments: how far can we go?

    The management of aquatic ecosystems is important to preserve the ecosystem services provided to humanity. The development of environmental assessment has allowed the management and therefore protection of these important resources. Reference Condition Approach (RCA) bioassessments using benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators are common tools that provide a means of determining impairment of stream sites by comparing exposed test sites to relatively unexposed reference sites. RCA predictive models are commonly developed at the scale of drainage basin, ecoregion, or political region (i.e. United Kingdom or Australian state), and test site assessment is restricted within the spatial boundaries of the model. If test site assessment can be applied outside the spatial scope of the model, insofar that the environmental characteristics are similar, it would reduce extensive sampling i.e. remote northern locations and time-consuming development of numerous models. The overall goal of my study was to assess whether a predictive model applied across a larger spatial extent, and therefore encompassing a greater area for test sites to be assessed, is as effective as models generally developed within smaller geographic regions such as within a basin or watershed. Benthic invertebrates and habitat data from three areas in Canada were examined: the Attawapiskat River basin in northern Ontario, the Fraser River basin in British Columbia and the Yukon River basin. The RCA predictive model method was used in this study that determines the relationships between benthic community groups and the environmental descriptors that explain them and the Benthic Assessment of Sediment (BEAST) assessment method to compare test sites with a physical similar group of reference sites. The performance of the bioassessment was assessed using a common set of simulated impact (“simpacted”) sites with known responses iv of taxa to disturbance. Models for each basin and a multi-basin model were compared on prediction performance, parsimony, and sensitivity. The multi-basin model had comparable prediction performance (65% correctly classified) to single basin models (56-72%) but lacked the sensitivity that models for single basins possessed. The Attawapiskat was the most parsimonious with only 2 predictors but the Fraser and multi-basin models explained the most variance with more predictors (Wilks’ λ = 0.06 and 0.1 for the Fraser and multi-basin models, respectively). The results of this study showed that sites can be assessed outside the range of their reference data insofar that the test site is within the range of environmental characteristics within the model. A test site assessed as disturbed for the multi-basin model will in fact be disturbed but disturbed sites are less frequently detected compared to single basin models. Therefore as with any bioassessment, users need to be aware of the chance of committing type 1 and 2 errors. Developing models that target a single stressor of concern to increase the pool of available candidate predictors is recommended; such a model may possess greater prediction performance and sensitivity
