Multidisciplinary program design for brain injury support: staying true to mental health
The advanced practicum, consisting of 450 hours, was completed at Brainworks
Corporation, which has a main office in Huntsville, Ontario. The focal point of the practicum
project was the development of a mental health program for Brainworks clients, emphasizing the
integration of the mental health recovery concept and ensuring alignment with the mental health
recovery paradigm in the program design.
In preparation to stay true to a paradigm shift toward mental health recovery, extensive
readings were undertaken both before and during the placement. The objective was to mindfully
incorporate the idea of mental health recovery into the designed program. These readings
explored the origins of mental health recovery, which diverges from the prevalent, deficit-
focused medical model that still exists in mental health settings.
Throughout the practicum, a guiding principle was the incorporation of anti-oppressive
social work practice, strengths-based social work practice, and psychology theories that could be
compatible with the mental health recovery paradigm shift. These theories were explored to
bridge the counselling theory gap within the multidisciplinary team that exists at the agency but
certainly exists in many other social work settings as well. Group work, cognitive-behavioural
therapy interventions, and dialectical behaviour interventions were applied in a manner that
complemented the conceptualization of mental health recovery as advocated by psychiatric
consumer/survivors
Evaluating the effectiveness of VR in a working at height training program: a crossover design experiment
Falling from height is considered one of the top causes of workplace injuries and fatalities in the construction industry. Safety training employing virtual reality has demonstrated its effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes as compared to traditional methods of training. However, there is a research gap in integrating and evaluating the effect of VR in traditional forms of training. The main objective of this study is to assess the impact on user performance when VR is integrated with traditional methods in working at height programs. A cross-over experimental design was employed, allowing participants to experience VR both before and after traditional training across two distinct groups. Both between-subject and within-subject analyses were conducted to gauge the individual effects and determine the superior sequence or group performance. User performance was significantly enhanced in both groups using pre-test and post-test measures, with no notable difference observed between the groups. However, the group experiencing VR after the traditional training improved their self-efficacy score in both trainings. This study implies that introducing VR after traditional training could potentially bolster participant confidence in safety training scenarios
Geology, hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at the Ormaque Deposit, Abitibi subprovince, Val-d'Or, Quebec
The Ormaque deposit is located within the renowned Val-d’Or mining camp of the Archean
Abitibi greenstone belt, Quebec, where the fault valve model for the formation of orogenic gold
deposits originated. Ormaque is hosted by a syn-volcanic intrusion, the C-porphyry, which was
emplaced in intermediate to felsic volcaniclastic rocks and flows of the ca. 2704 Ma Val-d’Or
Formation. The deposit consists of shallowly-dipping quartz-tourmaline-carbonate veins
associated with steeply north-dipping and east-striking reverse faults, containing few fault-fill
veins of similar composition. It differs from other deposits in the camp by the marked
predominance of extension veins over fault-fill veins. Reverse faults at Ormaque are severely
misoriented relative to the bulk tectonic shortening direction and can only be reactivated at very
low differential stresses and high fluid pressures. This favors the formation of extensional veins
over a wider range of differential stresses, explaining why Ormaque differs from other deposits in
the camp
A Metal Earth Atlas of Seismic Reflection and Magnetotelluric Transects Across the Superior Province
The seismic reflection and magnetotelluric conductivity sections published in these folios were generated from geophysical data archived by the Metal Earth project, a CAD104 million applied R&D program that commenced in March 2017. The project comprised a consortium of Canadian and international researchers from academia, government and industry, and was led by the Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Funding consisted of CAD49.2 million from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), CAD1 million donation from the Harquail family’s Midas Touch Foundation, and cash and in-kind contributions from private sector and government survey partners. Metal Earth used state-of-the-art equipment to transform our understanding of the processes responsible for metal endowment and ore localisation during Earth’s early evolution, particularly within the Superior Province (or Superior Craton) of Canada. This included the collection of new seismic reflection and magnetotelluric data along 18 transects across the Superior Province, each with differential metal endowment and styles of mineralisation. The processed geophysical data from each transect have been standardised and are published here to facilitate assessments between regions with differential metal endowment.Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF)

Family Dynamics and COVID-19: Homeschooling in Northeastern Ontario Prior to and During a Global Pandemic
In March 2020, a global pandemic rocked the planet and caused many established educational systems to come to a halt. Months into the pandemic, many decided to take on homeschooling rather than return their children to the public system at a time when the situation was uncertain and the virus was still a threat. Not only did the pandemic create new homeschoolers, but it impacted the seasoned homeschoolers by removing social networks, resources such as group learning, and also by changing household dynamics with partners now working from home.
Drawing on oral interviews conducted in early 2021, my thesis investigates the impact that homeschooling has had on family dynamics in Northeastern Ontario prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The thesis concludes that many thematic components to homeschooling were experienced by both sub-groups of homeschoolers. The biggest discrepancy in these groups was in regards to hardships they felt were the most impactful. To pre-pandemic homeschoolers, homeschooling was an extension of mothering and therefore aligned well with the ideals they formed of their families. By contrast, pandemic homeschoolers struggled more significantly with the fear of losing themselves in the lives of their families, and the loss of their identities outside the home.Masters of Arts (MA) in Humanitie
Future-proofing the Greenbelt: strategic housing as a catalyst for environmental protection and agricultural resilience
This thesis explores the history, present challenges, and
future opportunities in Ontario’s Greenbelt. Established
in 2005, the protected region is vital in assuring a
sustainable and protected environment for agriculture
in the province. However, in the wake of Ontario’s
worsening housing crisis, the protected region has
come under immense pressure, fuelled by the belief
that its protections exacerbate land scarcity, driving up
home prices beyond its boundaries. This project offers
a nuanced approach to the Greenbelt, investigating the
overlooked opportunities that strategic, work-integrated
housing offers to address growing labour shortages in
Canada’s agricultural industry. Central to this topic are
the challenges of exploitation within Canada’s Temporary
Foreign Worker program, specifically, the inhumane living
conditions of Ontario’s Migrant Farm Workers. This thesis
proposes the development of a non-profit, co-operatively
led housing community in Ontario’s Greenbelt that
balances agricultural preservation with the vital housing
needs of the region’s workforce.Master of Architecture (M.Arch
Reframing the architectural narrative of filmmaking
Film is a visual form of storytelling that relies on spatial
settings to convey narratives. At the same time, film
production also depends on carefully designed architecture
environments. This thesis explores the opportunity to
enhance the struggling fisheries-based economy of St.
John’s, Newfoundland by augmenting the city’s unrealised
potential to possess a film studio in Atlantic Canada.
Through the design of a mixed-use film studio facility
the design includes accommodations for film crew and
staff, public indoor and outdoor film viewing spaces,
a material reuse centre, and spaces for a mentorship
program. Located within the historic downtown core
that relies substantially on the adaptive reuse of vacant
spaces. This design proposal seeks to celebrate the
history and built environment of St. John’s while boosting
the local economy and supporting the community.Master of Architecture (M.Arch
Impacts of wildfire and windfarm construction and operation on herpetofauna community ecology
Climate change and its associated impacts threaten global biodiversity. Increases in wind
energy harvesting to reduce carbon emissions, coupled with increases in wildfire frequency and
severity, may pose risks to wildlife. I investigated potential impacts of windfarm operations and
wildfire on herpetofauna biodiversity, anuran calling behaviour, and snake health, in an area
where both impacts occurred simultaneously. I measured biodiversity metrics using squamate
cover surveys and anuran acoustic monitoring across 4 replicated site treatments: Control, Wind,
Burn, and WindBurn (double impact). Anuran diversity, evenness, richness, and relative
abundances were lowest in Wind sites, whereas metrics in Burn sites did not differ from those in
Control sites. Squamate total abundance was lowest in WindBurn sites, but other investigated
metrics did not differ between impacted and non-impacted sites. More research using a Before-
After-Control-Impact (BACI) study design is needed to understand the acute and chronic impacts
of these disturbances on at-risk wildlife species.Master of Science (MSc) in Biolog
