    Help or hindrance? A narrative exploration of the familial relationships of an indigenous woman living in Northern Ontario

    In Canada, Indigenous women and parents have been over-represented in the homeless population (Menzies, 2006). Relatively little is known about the experiences, perspectives and needs of this population (Shaikh, Kauppi, Pallard, & Gervais, 2013). This narrative study uncovers the family life experiences of an Indigenous woman given the pseudonym “Sam”; she was living in Northern Ontario and had experienced homelessness. Both the Listening Guide, a qualitative voice-centered relational method of inquiry based on the work of Carol Gilligan, and traditional Cree Medicine Wheel teachings were utilized to analyze data. Results indicate that family members played roles both supportive and unsupportive to Sam. Family members were instrumental in the genesis of homelessness for Sam and in facilitating transitions into housing. I-poems derived from interviews with Sam reveal aspects of life in stages from childhood through to elder, and illustrate her relationships with immediate family (mother, father, siblings, son), extended family members (grandmother, aunts, cousins, grandchildren), partners and friends. The findings support the view that changes in social work practice and policy are required to ensure that services are culturally safe and relevant for Indigenous peoples, and allow for the full inclusion of family members and varied relationships within the lives of women living with homelessness.Master of Social Work (MSW

    Effects of cordycepin on regeneration in a planarian model

    Used widely in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the cordyceps mushroom has been shown to offer a plethora of health benefits. Aiding ailments from chronic fatigue to cancer, the major bioactive molecule, cordycepin, may also assist in tissue repair. To test these unsupported claims, planarian were cut in half to serve as a regenerative/wound healing model with cordycepin being administered at nine varying concentrations. Specific aspects of growth, being total length and blastema length, were observed over the 6 days following amputation. After analysis of variance, a significant interaction between segment and concentration was recorded with concentrations of interest corresponding to 1mM, 100uM, 100nM, 10nM, and 100pM on the 6th day of regeneration, F(8,287)=3.305,p<.01, η²=.0891. Differences in blastema on day 6 of regeneration were also observed, F(8,243)=2.130, p<.001, η²=.087, showing an increase in size in higher concentrations, 1mM and 100uM, and decreases in size when considering the lower concentrations of the experiment, 100nM, 10nM, and 100pM. The differential results indicate the possibility of different mechanisms of regeneration being influenced by cordycepin, but further biochemical testing is required.CordycepinCordycepinHonours Essa

    La présente étude cherche à identifier les facteurs qui peuvent nuire à la communication entre des locuteurs natifs de l’anglais au Canada et des locuteurs non natifs qui sont de nouveaux arrivants au pays. La recension des écrits a mis de l’avant le fait qu’un locuteur non natif d’une langue donnée peut percevoir des jugements négatifs à son égard de la part de locuteurs natifs, d’où la question de linguicisme. Ces jugements peuvent se traduire par la perception de stigmatisation ou de discrimination linguistique à l’égard de la personne, et peuvent entraîner des difficultés de communication. Cette étude se penche sur le linguicisme perçu à l’égard des locuteurs non natifs basé sur le fait de parler avec un accent qui se distingue de la norme phonologique au sein d’une communauté donnée. Autrement dit, cette étude se penche sur la discrimination qui survient quant à la façon particulière qu’a un locuteur ou un groupe de locuteurs de s’exprimer en fonction de critères prosodiques. Les résultats obtenus dans cette étude sont limités mais suggèrent quand même qu’il y a un besoin d’approfondir notre connaissance sur le linguicisme au Canada

    Modeling and fault detection of an industrial copper electrowinning process

    Copper electrowinning plants are where high purity copper (Cu) product is obtained through electrochemical reduction of copper from the leaching solution. The presence selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) in copper sulphide minerals may result in contamination of the leach solution and, eventually of the copper cathode. Unfortunately, hydrometallurgical processes are often difficult to monitor and control due to day-to-day fluctuations in the process as well as limitations in capturing the data at high frequencies. The purpose of this work is to model key variables in the copper electrowinning tank and to apply statistical fault detection to the selenium/tellurium removal and copper electrowinning process operations. First principle modeling was applied to the copper electrowinning tank and partial differential equation models were derived to describe the process dynamics. Industrial data were used to estimate the model parameters and validate the resulting models. Comparison with industrial model shows that the models fit reasonably well with industrial operation. Simulations of the models were run to explore the dynamics under varying operating conditions. The derived models provide a useful tool for future process modification and control development. Using the collected industrial operating data, dynamic principal component analysis (DPCA) based fault detection was applied to Se/Te removal and copper electrowinning processes at Vale’s Electrowinning Plant in Copper Cliff, ON. The fault detection results from the DPCA based approach were consistent with the industrial product quality test. After faults were detected, fault diagnosis was then applied to determine the causes of faults. The fault detection and diagnosis system helps define causes of upset conditions that lead to coppercathode contamination

    Exploring the explicit knowledge of the Duchenne marker and asymmetry in smile judgment

    Research has shown that individuals are sensitive to the activation of the orbicularis oculi muscle (Duchenne marker) and are able to detect asymmetry. It has been proposed that the differences in smile judgment performance might be explained by one’s explicit knowledge regarding the morphological cues. The goal of the study was to explore individuals’ explicit knowledge of the Duchenne marker and asymmetry in smile judgment tasks. The present study also employed the Likert scale to examine the possible effect of response options on smile judgment tasks. Participants also were asked to judge both the happiness and authenticity of smiles. Three types of smiles (symmetrical Duchenne, non- Duchenne and asymmetrical) were presented for the smile judgment task. Participants were also asked to indicate if they noticed symmetrical differences and cues in certain facial regions. Results showed that the symmetrical Duchenne smiles were judged as being the most happy and authentic. This was followed by the non-Duchenne smiles while the asymmetrical smiles were judged as being the least happy and authentic. This finding was similar to that found in a previous study that employed the Likert scale, suggesting the possible influence of response options on smile judgment. Similar results were obtained for both the happiness and authenticity judgment conditions, implying that wording only had a minor influence on smile judgment. Results also revealed that participants had good explicit knowledge about the morphological cues but it was not perfect. Therefore, the results suggested that explicit knowledge on its own is not sufficient to explain smile judgment performance

    The consequences of concussive injuries have been considered reversible, trivial, or permanent depending upon the perspective of the professional and the precision of the measurement tool. Saturated (daily) quantitative electroencephalographic (qEEG) measurements for 7 days after a sports-related concussive injury and for 7 days about 8 months later revealed conspicuous changes in power measurements in specific frequency bands over the impact site as well as within specific, likely contrecoup, areas. The fluctuations with time may accommodate the contradiction of results for concussive-EEG effects within the medical and scientific literature. Normative qEEG profiles for 20 normal participants collected daily for 7 days indicated extraordinarily strong intra-individual consistencies in power metrics and suggest that variability from easily established normative quantifications of topographic EEG activity could differentially discern concussive effects. The concordance of shifts in mood states with the power for relevant frequencies over expected regions of the cerebrum classically associated with different moods supports the validity of the subjective experience-brain location coupling and the direct contribution of subtle alterations in EEG power within certain frequency bands and cerebral regions to the types of mood

    This paper documents ongoing research into the application of 3D printing processes to GIS data. As 3D printing becomes more accessible to a broad audience, its application to GIS data is being investigated by industry, academia and amateur Makers. This paper will outline a technique for converting contour lines into a digital, printable 3D models using ArcGIS and Rhino software; other methods will also be briefly discussed. The end goal of this research is to develop a set of easy-to-follow guidelines for replicating this process in the context of an academic library, drawing on the author’s own experiences
