Creating canadian olympians: a look at a successful trampoline olympic development environment
The process of creating Olympic level talent is complex and multifaceted. Researchers in
the worlds of talent identification, talent development and career transitions have
contributed to the identification of appropriate sport environments, called athlete talent
development environments that contribute to athletic success. In addition, descriptions of
sport environments that have the ability to develop senior level competitors have been
established. Although researchers have been able to identify these contextual components
that help athletes become successful, a description of a sport environment that is able to
repeatedly create Olympic medal performances from athletes is still unknown. This
project compiled a description of an Olympic development environment– Skyriders
Trampoline Place. Four central themes were identified by the participants in this study as
relevant to Olympic level success. The four themes are 1) the development of Skyriders,
2) the Skyriders training environment at present, 3) coaching strategies and 4) team
interactions
Les étudiantes finissantes francophones d’un programme de baccalauréat en sciences infirmières: une étude de leur expérience avec la clientèle des personnes âgées dans le nord de l’Ontario.
Le but de cette thèse est de comprendre l’expérience des étudiantes francophones du nord de l’Ontario finissant un programme de baccalauréat en sciences infirmières avec la clientèle des personnes âgées pour saisir ce qui les retient à s’investir auprès de cette clientèle dans le milieu des soins de longue durée à la fin de leur formation. Le contexte actuel ne semble pas propice à y attirer les futures infirmières autorisées. Une approche phénoménologique, de type Giorgi, est utilisée pour analyser les propos recueillis lors d’entrevues individuelles semi-structurées auprès de six participantes. L’analyse des entrevues fait ressortir que les futures infirmières autorisées ayant participé à l’étude ont vécu une expérience majoritairement positive relativement à la clientèle des personnes âgées. Elles les affectionnent mais elles ne se sentent pas prêtes à travailler dans le milieu des soins de longue durée. Elles ne se sentent pas assez compétentes et expérimentées pour s’y aventurer
Geology of the Archean Côté Gold Au(-Cu) intrusion-related deposit, Swayze Greenstone Belt, Ontario
The Côté Gold Au(-Cu) deposit is a low-grade, large-tonnage type deposit with an
indicated resource of 269 Mt averaging 0.88 g/t Au (7.61 M oz) and an inferred resource of 44
Mt averaging 0.74 g/t Au (1.04 M oz) at a cut-off grade of 0.3 g/t Au. The deposit is located in
the Swayze greenstone belt (SGB), part of the larger and gold-rich Abitibi Subprovince and is
the first large gold deposit to be discovered in the SGB.
The deposit is hosted by multi-phase tonalite, diorite and quartz diorite intrusions of the
Chester intrusive complex (CIC), a multi-phased, laccolith-shaped synvolcanic intrusion.
Crosscutting relationships suggest coeval emplacement of the host rocks and high-precision UPb
ID-TIMS zircon geochronology results constrain the CIC to ca. 2741 to 2739 Ma. Although a
close temporal relationship exists between the tonalite and dioritic phases, they appear to be
petrogenetically unrelated. The CIC is demonstrated to be petrologically, texturally and
geochemically similar to low-Al tonalite-trondhjemite-diorite composite intrusions known to
underlie VMS-type mineralization. The CIC was emplaced into tholeiitic mafic metavolcanic
rocks of the Arbutus Formation that are interpreted to have formed in a back-arc environment.
The CIC is coeval and cogenetic with the felsic to intermediate rocks of the Yeo Formation.
Emplacement of the CIC into a shallow crustal level is inferred based on the incorporation of
screens and inclusions of the Yeo Formation, consistent with the presence of textures, such as
granophyres, miarolitic cavities and pegmatites, and Al-in hornblende geobarometry results of
≤1.3 ± 0.6 kbars. The intrusive complex is intruded by several younger and petrogenetically
unrelated dike phases, as well as overprinted by regional deformation events.

The deposit has a large ore envelope (1200 m by 300 m) within which several styles of
mineralization (breccias, disseminations and veins) that are co-spatial and cogenetic to
hydrothermal alteration are recognized. The hydrothermal stages consist of: (1) a rare series of
gold-bearing amphibole-rich veins and breccias spatially restricted to the south and central parts
of the deposit; (2) an extensive, main-stage biotite alteration that is centred on Au- and Cubearing
hydrothermal biotite breccia bodies. Outwards from the breccia are veins (stockworks
and sheeted arrays) and disseminations; (3) an extensive, Au ± Cu-bearing fracture-controlled
and replacement-style muscovite alteration in the centre of the deposit; (4) an unmineralized
fracture-controlled and disseminated epidote alteration that is localized to the north of the
deposit; (5) a texturally destructive albite alteration occurs in the central part of the deposit; and
(6) chlorite alteration that overprints biotite alteration. Drill core observations suggest that all the
hydrothermal events, except chloritization, broadly overlap with magmatism and are crudely
zoned on the deposit scale; chloritization is considered to be metamorphic in origin.
To constrain the timing of hydrothermal events U-Pb ID-TIMS, SHRIMP and LA ICPMS
dating of four hydrothermal titanites from amphibole and albite alteration assemblages and
Re-Os dating of two molybdenite samples were analyzed. The hydrothermal titanite ages are
centred on a ca. 2740 Ma and the molybdenite ages are 2736.1 ± 11.4 Ma and 2746.8 ± 11.4 Ma.
These ages overlap with magmatism and strongly support a syn-intrusion timing for alteration
and gold mineralization. Importantly, this age represents a new metallogenic gold event in the
Abitibi Subprovince. In addition, two rutile ages at ca. 2667 Ma were obtained and indicate the
deposit was affected by subsequent thermal events, such as regional metamorphism.
Several of the alteration types (i.e., amphibole, biotite, muscovite and epidote) are
considered to be genetically related to the dioritic phases of the CIC based on relative timing,

distribution, mineralogy and mineral chemistry and whole-rock geochemistry. The progressive
crystallization of the dioritic magma chamber is considered to have resulted in the generation of
mineralized magmatic-hydrothermal fluids that are thought to be responsible for generating the
Côté Gold deposit. The sequence of alteration types, their zonation in the deposit and their
chemistry (i.e., gains and losses, REE patterns, metal associations and isotopes) is consistent
with the early hydrothermal stages (i.e., amphibole and biotite) having formed from high
temperature magmatic-derived dioritic fluids and the later alteration types (i.e., muscovite and
epidote) having formed from cooling magmatic fluids mixed with seawater.
The development of albite alteration is thought to be the result of volatile exsolution of
tonalite based on its syn-intrusion timing and the Na-rich nature of the fluids. Although albite
alteration may be gold-bearing, the erratic distribution of the mineralization and the leaching
capacity of fluids suggest earlier gold was remobilized during this event.
Considering the characteristics of the host rocks, the demonstrated overlap of magmatic
and hydrothermal events at ca. 2740 Ma, the nature and distribution of alteration, the style of the
associated mineralization and the geochemical characteristics of the hydrothermal fluids the Côté
Gold deposit is considered to be intrusion-related in origin and formed in a manner similar to
Phanerozoic porphyry-type deposits

Investigating emotional facial recognition in trait anxious individuals: an eye-tracking study
The current study examined the relationship between the recognition of the six basic emotions as
a function of trait anxiety. Previous research has led to conflicting findings; one study reported
increased accuracy for expressions of fear, and another finding no differences as a function of
trait anxiety. As suggested by previous literature, the current study included eye movement
measures to further investigate the processing of emotional expressions in anxious individuals.
The current study also utilized four intensities of emotional expressions, a new addition to
anxiety literature, as well as incorporated a measure of emotional dysregulation. The task
consisted of a free viewing recognition task of expressions of the six basic emotions. Results
from the current study revealed no accuracy or viewing time differences as a function of trait
anxiety, however, a robust relationship was found between level of trait anxiety and emotional
dysregulation. Clinical implications and future directions are discussed
Tracing paths: the social historical organization of mental illness in Ontario.
This thesis employs a critical ethnographic and social historical lens to make visible the experiences of people from within Ontario’s mental health system. Social historical analysis of texts that governed Ontario’s psychiatric hospital system from the end of the nineteenth century to the present mental health system provide context to 30 ethnographic interviews with 15 people who identified as consumers/survivors and 15 people who identified as stakeholders or service provider/caregivers in northern Ontario. Contextualized from below and within and from the past to the present, this interrogation of the mental health and psychiatric system adds to the body of literature on mental illness by adding voices of knowledge and experiences of mental illness. It raises important questions about the shifting landscape of the mad subject. The thesis focuses in particular on the ways in which present mental health consumers, survivors, service/providers, caregivers and stakeholders navigate through the system. It concludes with a discussion of the absence and necessity of first person accounts of madness and the mental health system
A study of the crystal chemistry, cathodoluminescence, geochemistry and oxygen isotopes in Scheelite: application towards discriminating among differing ore-deposit systems
Scheelite (CaWO4) from a total of 37 of world-wide, differing ore-deposit settings
(orogenic, sediment- and greenstone-hosted, skarn, porphyry, greisen, volcanogenic massive
sulfide, breccia and polymetallic deposits) were examined using cathodoluminescence, SEMEDS,
LA-ICP-MS and whole-grain stable isotopic analyses. The goal of this study was to assess
whether the crystal-chemistry of scheelite (i.e., major, minor and trace elements, stable isotopes,
CL response) could be used to distinguish between differing environments of formation. Results
show: (1) weak to strong CL responses, these varying from grains with complex, oscillatory
zonation patterns, to discordant patterns to those where no zonation is evident; (2) the
predominant elemental substitutions involve As5+ or Mo6+ ↔ W6+, and Sr2+ or REE3+ ↔ Ca2+;
(3) the trends in REE vary in terms of ΣREEs (104 range in CN values). The degree and type of
REE fractionation patterns (flat, convex, concave) are variable and both positive and negative Eu
anomalies (<0.1 to >20-30) may be present; and (4) the δ18O values are highly variable, ranging
from -4.6 to +12.7‰. The broad ranges do not independently fix a single parent fluid during scheelite formation. The intensity of CL zonation was found to correlate with Mo content:
increases in Mo ↔ W substitution correlates with a reduction in CL signal. Further, the nature of
the type zonation revealed by CL was found to directly correlate with geological environment:
where zonation is absent (i.e., a homogeneous CL response), the scheelite is associated with
metamorphic-related systems and where the zonation is pronounced, the scheelite is associated
with magmatic-related systems. The variability in REE patterns suggest that other factors are
likely controlling the incorporation of REEs into scheelite (e.g., changes in fluid chemistry and
mineral precipitation). The presence of substitutions involving Mo and As are particularly
relevant, as both are redox sensitive. In particular, enrichments in Mo (>100 ppm) suggest
formation in highly oxidizing environments wherein, Mo may be mobile. The crystal-chemistry
of scheelite has been demonstrated to be both a strong indicator of ore-forming conditions and
the general geological environment
Exploring how indigenous healing practices and a western treatment model “seeking safety” can co-exist in assisting indigenous peoples to heal from trauma and addiction
Background: Indigenous communities in Canada face significant challenges with trauma and substance use disorders (SUD). Most Elders, traditional healers and Indigenous scholars agree that connecting to culture, land, community, and spiritual practices is a pathway to healing trauma and SUD in Indigenous peoples. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the blending of Indigenous healing practices (IHP) and a mainstream treatment model, Seeking Safety (SS), resulted in a reduction of intergenerational trauma (IGT) symptoms and SUD. The SS model has been studied in other populations but there was no evidence of its effectiveness with Indigenous peoples. Some studies have shown the positive impact of Indigenous healing practices on SUD. Methods: A mixed-methods design was used to evaluate the impact of a 13-week Indigenous healing practices and Seeking Safety (IHPSS) implementation project. This was a pilot study with one group of 12 Indigenous women and one group of 12 Indigenous men (n = 24) in Northern Ontario. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted at the end of treatment. The transcripts underwent qualitative thematic analysis to depict themes and understand the ways in which the program promoted healing. Data was collected pre- and post-implementation using the following assessment tools: the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40), the Addiction Severity Index-Lite (ASI-Lite), the Historical Loss Scale (HLS), and the Historical Loss Associated Symptom Scale (HLASS). The effectiveness of the new program was assessed using paired t-tests, with the TSC-40 as the main outcome. Results: A total of 17 participants completed the study. Four core themes emerged from the qualitative data that showed a positive impact on the symptoms and behaviors related to IGT and addiction in the participants. The benefits from both Indigenous healing practices and SS were clearly depicted through the voices and viewpoints of all 17 participants. Participants demonstrated improvement in the trauma symptoms, as measured by the TSC-40, with a mean decrease of 23.9 (SD=6.4, p=0.001) points, represented a 55% improvement from baseline. Furthermore, all six TSC-40 subscales demonstrated a significant decrease: anxiety (p = 0.001); depression (p=0.000); sexual abuse trauma index (p=0.0011); sleep disturbance (p=0.003); dissociation (p=0.027); and sexual problems (p=0.037). Substance use did not increase as measured by the ASI-Lite alcohol composite score (mean difference = -0.011) and drug composite score (mean difference = 0.032). Conclusion: Evidence from this mixed-methods pilot study indicates that blending IHP with the SS model was beneficial in reducing trauma symptoms. The combination of IHP and mainstream healing methods has the potential to enhance the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples
Evaluation of a vibration measurement tool as part of a whole-body vibration management program in underground hard-rock mining
Prolonged exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) experienced by mobile equipment operators
requires routine measurement to manage the risk for numerous adverse health effects. The
WBVpod is an affordable and purportedly accurate iPod application that could provide workers
the means to regularly measure WBV exposure. The WBVpod was used simultaneously with a
gold-standard vibration meter to determine the level of agreement between the two devices
during laboratory and field trials. Furthermore, a pilot study that used the WBVpod and
educational sessions among underground miners (n=7) and trainees (n=11) was conducted to
determine how the WBVpod could compliment an intervention on perceived knowledge, as well
as gaining feedback from the participants on the usability of the WBVpod.
The WBVpod displayed a high level of agreement with the gold standard device for all three
axes (ICC: 0.92-0.97), with the vertical axis having the least bias (-0.015 m/s2) but a wider limits
of agreement (-0.136 – 0.106 m/s2). The pilot study found a significant improvement in
perceived WBV knowledge (U=9.5, p<.05), however discomfort was a common complaint when
sitting on the WBVpod for extended periods of time.
The findings suggest that the WBVpod would be a valid tool to estimate WBV exposure. In
addition, the majority of participants experienced an increase in perceived WBV knowledge and
increased ability to measure WB
The influence of social determinants of health on child physical health in Greater Sudbury neighbourhoods
There is increasing awareness that social determinants of health are associated with growing health
inequities, or avoidable differences, among many populations. The City of Greater Sudbury is
experiencing these health inequities, including inequities in child physical health and wellbeing. This
study will examine the relationship between specific social determinants of health and child physical
health and wellbeing in Greater Sudbury neighbourhoods. The goals of this research are 1) to explore
the relationships between specific social determinants of health and child physical health and wellbeing
in Greater Sudbury neighbourhoods, 2) explore the collective influence of social determinants of health
on child physical health and wellbeing, and 3) examine unique relationships that may exist between the
social determinants of health and children physical health in neighbourhoods for the City of Greater
Sudbury.
The complexity, nature, and interactions of the social determinants of health within society
makes observing them quantitatively difficult. This requires many different social determinants of health
to be studied separately from one another, as well as together, in order to understand how they
influence child physical health and wellbeing. In order to better understand these interactions, the social
ecological model of health promotion presents an ideal theoretical framework for examining multiple
variables and their correlations and, therefore, is used in this study. This study is an ecological crosssectional
study using secondary data analysis of the 2011 National Household Survey (Statistics Canada)
and the Early Development Instrument which was developed by the Offord Centre for Child Studies.
This study involves a multi-variate analysis with the dependent variable of child physical health
being represented by a composite measure of child physical health and wellbeing, and multiple
independent variables including different measures of neighbourhood income, education,
unemployment, lone-parent families and poverty. Child physical health and wellbeing is represented by
the Early Development Instrument (EDI) - a questionnaire completed by the teacher or an Early Child
Educator (ECE) when the child is in senior kindergarten. The EDI is a comprehensive measure of child
physical health and wellbeing because it includes gross/fine motor skills, physical readiness for the
school day, and physical independence. The social determinants of health are represented by the
National Household Survey – a voluntary sample survey using a random sample collected by Statistics
Canada, which the federal government uses to collect social and economic data about the Canadian
population (Statistics Canada, 2011).

Descriptive statistics address the assumptions of linear regression as well as examine the nature and
normalcy of the independent and dependent variables. Then the presence of outliers are tested using
univariate, bivariate, and multivariate detection methods. Linear and multiple regression tests are then
used to analyze the influences of the social determinants of health on child physical health and
wellbeing. The results of this study demonstrate the challenges of exploring geographical differences in
the health of a population, and how those differences in health may be socially produced. Furthermore,
this study provides insight into better understanding how child physical health and wellbeing in Greater
Sudbury neighbourhoods may be influenced by socially produced health disparities
