La perception de l'importance de l'intelligence, de la personnalité, de l'apparence physique: le rôle de la situation et du sexe
Cette recherche vise à savoir comment le sexe du percevant, ainsi que le sexe de la personne cible joue un rôle dans la perception de l’importance relative de l’intelligence, de la personnalité et de l’apparence physique dans des situations personnelles et professionnelles. 41 étudiants et 97 étudiantes universitaires ont répondu à un questionnaire dans lequel ils devaient évaluer comment un homme ou une femme perçoit l’importance de ces trois traits dans 8 situations personnelles ou professionnelles. Les résultats montrent que les hommes accordent une plus grande importance à l’intelligence et à la personnalité d’un homme qu’à son apparence physique, mais ils considèrent l’intelligence d’une femme plus importante que sa personnalité et que son apparence physique. Par contre, les femmes accordent une plus grande importance à la personnalité qu’à l’intelligence et qu’à l’apparence physique aussi bien pour les hommes et que pour les femmes. Les hommes et les femmes considèrent l’apparence physique le moins important des trois traits
Les employés de l'industrie minière : une analyse qualitative des perceptions des travailleurs quant à l'absentéisme et le processus de retour au travail
Malgré la présence de nombreuses études examinant la santé mentale ainsi que ses liens en milieu de travail, force est de constater que peu de recherches se sont centrées spécifiquement sur l'industrie minière. La présente étude, qui s'insère dans une vaste recherche visant à mieux comprendre l'état de santé mentale et de bien-être des travailleurs chez une grande compagnie minière en Ontario, vise à mieux comprendre l'absentéisme et le retour au travail chez cette main-d'oeuvre particulière. Après avoir mis en relief les types d'évènements menant à une absence pour des raisons de santé, ainsi que les facilitateurs et les obstacles susceptibles d’expliquer le retour au travail, l’étude termine par l’émission de recommandations en fonction des perceptions des travailleurs par rapport au processus de retour au travail
Saisir l’acte : une contribution empirique à la sociologie relationnelle
Dans la sociologie de l’action, il y a actuellement un débat animé entre ceux qui prônent une perspective actionnaliste de l’agir et ceux qui voudraient qu’il y ait une évolution vers une modélisation relationnelle. La perspective actionnaliste de l’agir, fondée sur les théories de l’action, repose fondamentalement sur un acteur rationnel. La modélisation relationnelle de Laflamme veut comprendre les phénomènes sociologiques à partir de trois concepts, soit ceux de socialité, d’historicité et d’émoraison. Cette recherche a confronté la modélisation relationnelle de Laflamme à celle des théories de l’action à partir d’observations en milieu naturel. Des enregistrements audio/vidéo ont été captés au cours d’une semaine dans cinq foyers de familles canadiennes. Ces enregistrements ont été transcrits et une analyse des propos a été effectuée. Les hypothèses ont voulu que, si les théories de l’action ont raison, on devrait observer des manifestations, selon divers indicateurs, d’intention, de stratégie et d’intérêt. Sinon, on devrait être en mesure d’observer des effets, selon divers indicateurs, de socialité, d’émoraison et d’historicité. Nous avons mesuré 21 indicateurs en tout – 11 indicateurs d’intention, d’intérêt et de stratégie et 10 indicateurs de socialité, d’historicité et d’émoraison. Parmi les 11 indicateurs des théories de l’action, il n’y en a eu aucun qui se trouvait dans la majorité des propos. Sur les 10 indicateurs de la modélisation relationnelle, nous avons pu repérer des phénomènes attachés aux indicateurs de socialité, d’historicité et d’émoraison dans la majorité des cas. Ces résultats nous permettent de trancher parmi nos hypothèses. Nous croyons que ce travail de recherche démontre bien que les indicateurs de socialité, d’historicité et d’émoraison se manifestent dans les propos d’interlocuteurs en milieu naturel et souligne la valeur de la modélisation relationnelle. Cette conclusion est importante à deux niveaux. D’abord, cette vérification empirique montre, encore une fois, que la modélisation relationnelle constitue un meilleur outil que ne l’est l’actionnalisme pour comprendre l’acte ; ensuite, que cette conclusion, qui a déjà été tirée d’études en milieux contrôlés, persiste si elle repose sur des observations dans un milieu naturel
The SNO+ supernova calibration source development and testing
SNO+ is a kilotonne-scale, liquid scintillator-based neutrino detector housed in the underground
facilities of SNOLAB at Creighton Mine, Sudbury. SNO+ is capable of detecting bursts of neutrinos
released by nearby core-collapse supernovae among other physics goals. For such an event, stress
testing is required to ensure that a burst of supernova neutrino events can be reliably read out
and recorded by the electronics and data acquisition system to avoid data pileup and limit event
separation. During a supernova, SNO+ needs to be able to record the burst, send a timely alert
to the astronomical community, and quickly analyze and interpret the data.
The supernova calibration system (SNC+) for SNO+ simulates the light produced by interactions
of neutrinos from a supernova within the liquid scintillator target using pulsed, visible light
from a laser diode. The SNC+ is a data-driven pulser capable of producing high-powered, ns-scale
pulses with repetition rates up to 12.5 MHz. Each photon pulse is expected to deposit energy
of up to 70 MeV within the liquid scintillator of the SNO+ detector. The light from the SNC+
laser diode will be delivered isotropically within the SNO+ detector by ber optics and a di using
glass laserball. The SNC+ has undergone design, parts procurement, construction, assembly, and
initial-stage testing for this thesis research
The effects of perceptual fluency, schema congruency, and sexuality on attribute ratings
Previous literature on schema congruency has largely found that schema incongruence is
associated with less positive attribute ratings. However, one recent study found the opposite effects
where schema incongruence was associated with more positive ratings. A potential reason for their
opposing results was that this study analyzed the schema incongruent stimuli of “a sensitive man”
and “an assertive female” as one group and did not examine for differences according to gender;
however previous literature has stated that schemas are entrenched different according to gender. The
purpose of this study was to replicate this previous study that supported a positive affect for schema
incongruence to determine whether this potential gender confound was responsible for the
inconsistent results, while also looking to see if manipulating perceptual fluency (how easy
something is to read) could mitigate this negative impact, particularly for sexuality schemas.
Despite previous robust effects, fluency did not impact attribute ratings. We suggest that this
is potentially because the schemas for sexuality are too entrenched. Congruency did impact attribute
ratings, and in almost all cases individuals who were schema congruent for sexuality were rated as
more positive than those who were schema incongruent, suggesting that gender did play a role in
previous findings
An analysis of quenching and extraction techniques for performing metabolomics in Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.
I present here a protocol for accurate liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry based determination of the metabolome of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. At. ferrooxidans metabolic processes contribute to the environmentally destructive process of acid mine drainage (AMD), and metabolomic profiling can offer insight into how At. ferrooxidans contributes to these processes. Metabolism must be stopped (quenched) instantaneously while limiting the amount of cell damage. I tested a wide variety of quenching solutions and found that ammonium formate was the most effective quenching solution. An accurate metabolomics analysis also requires extraction of as large a number of metabolites as possible, with as little chemical bias (in extraction or degradation) as possible. I tested a wide variety of extraction solutions and found that
isopropanol:methanol:water was the best extraction solution. Standardizing a protocol to quench and extract metabolites in At. ferrooxidans will contribute to understanding how At. ferrooxidans contributes to the AMD phenomenon
Non-pharmacological prevention of delirium in older adults in long term care: a scoping study
Background: Non-pharmacological multicomponent interventions for the prevention of delirium
have been well studied in the acute care setting. Less is known however, regarding this approach
in long term care environment.
Aim: The purpose was to systematically synthesize evidence pertaining to non-pharmacological
nursing interventions for the prevention of delirium among older adults residing in long term
care settings.
Methods: This study used a scoping review methodology guided by Arksey and O’Malley’s
(2005) framework. A total of eight academic databases were searched. In addition, reference
lists, clinical guidelines, and key journals were searched. To ascertain the nature of the extracted
data from reports meeting specific inclusion criteria, descriptive numerical data analysis methods
were used.
Findings: Results revealed a total of 13 reports; two clinical guidelines, one systematic review,
and 10 primary studies. The reviewed evidence examined single rather than multicomponent
interventions for the prevention of delirium in the population of interest. Collectively, the
heterogeneous and mixed findings addressed hydration, risk reduction and education of staff.
Conclusion: The results were stark in contrast to the established body of work regarding nonpharmacological
multicomponent approaches in acute care
A fluid inclusion study of the Little Nahanni LCT-Type Pegmatite Group, NWT Canada: implications for the nature and origin of fluids in LCT-Type Pegmatites and Pegmatite evolution
The Cretaceous (82 Ma) Little Nahanni Pegmatite Group , Canada, is a 15 km long swarm of
LCT-type pegmatite dikes that intrude Precambrian to Lower Cambrian siliciclastic metapelites
and carbonate rocks. The dykes are dominated by a primary assemblage of quartz, spodumene,
K-feldspar ± muscovite lacking both graphic textures and core zones, but characterized by combtextured spodumene and K-feldspar intergrowths. Varying degrees of albitization and lesser
phyllic alteration accompany ore-grade oxide enrichment (Ta-Nb and Sn, respectively).A
comprehensive fluid inclusion study using a wide variety of methods (petrography , CL,
microthermometry, SEM/EDS evaporate mound analysis, LA ICP-MS, laser Raman
spectroscopy, δ13C) on minerals (quartz, K-feldspar, albite, spodumene, muscovite, garnet, and
tourmaline) from barren and mineralized samples indicate the fluid inclusions are secondary and
appear to post-date pegmatite crystallization. The presence of secondary fluid inclusions may
instead represent entrapment during the late-stage (sub-solidus to post crystallization)
metasomatic evolution stage of the pegmatites. Three fluid types occur, and listed in paragenetic
order are: (A) an aqueous-carbonic fluid (≤1 wt. % eq. NaCl) with varying XCO2 (0.1 to 0.78),
purity (TmCO2= -57o
to -61oC), and density; (B) a low-salinity (≤2 wt. % eq. NaCl) aqueous
fluid; and (C) an aqueous-methane-nitrogen fluid. SEM-EDS analysis indicates that the fluids are
Na (-K) - dominant, but with significant S and enrichment in transition and chalcophile elements.
Fluid inclusion extracts have δ13C values (-9.7 to -27.7‰; n=7) which indicates exchange of the
fluids with the immediate, carbon-bearing wall rocks occurred. Collectively the data indicate: (1)
fluids were trapped during the later, metasomatic stage of pegmatite evolution; (2) fluids were
trapped at <2.5 kbars and <350°C with pressure fluctuating between lithostatic and hydrostatic;
(3) variable degrees of fluid:rock interaction occurred with the exocontact zone, resulting in
varying XCO2and CO2:CH4 values; and (4) metasomatism and rare metal mineralization
occurred in the presence of meteoric water. These findings indicate that the LNPG pegmatites
are not a closed system, some of the carbonic component of H2O-CO2 fluids is exotic, and that
low-salinity fluids of meteoric origin infiltrated during the subsolidus stage of pegmatite
evolution
The effect of andrographis paniculata on the growth of malignant cancer cells
There are a variety of plants that have been recognized and used in traditional medicine for their health benefits. Among these plants is Andrographis paniculata, commonly known as the king of bitters because of its bitter taste. In the past, Andrographis paniculata has been used to treat various ailments, including respiratory infections, the common cold, snake bites, inflammation and diarrhea. We have tested the effect of Andrographis paniculata extracts on the growth of malignant cancer cells and its potential benefits towards cancer treatment. Cancer cells, including B16- BL6, MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, 4T1, and ASPC-1 cells, were treated with 70% ethanol extracts or aqueous extracts of Andrographis paniculata with a range in concentration from 0.1 to 1%. Treatment with the ethanol extract of Andrographis paniculata inhibited cell growth when added at 0.25% to 1%. The aqueous extract was less potent and inhibited cell growth at only 1%. Treatment of B16- BL6 cells with 1% of the aqueous extract of Andrographis paniculata for 48 h induced apoptosis as detected using the acridine orange/ ethidium bromide cell staining assay. On the other hand, treatment with the ethanol extract had a much stronger effect and cell staining showed late stage apoptosis and loss of membrane integrity. We have shown that treatment of B16- BL6 cells with Andrographis paniculata extracts altered cell survival pathways and promoted apoptosis by using western blot analysis for ERK ½, phosphorylated-ERK and Caspase 3. Similarly, the treatment of B16-BL6 with the ethanol extract for 48 h increased the number of cells in the Sub-G1 phase, in comparison to treatment with the aqueous extract, by using flow cytometry of propidium iodide-stained cells. Overall, this study demonstrated that Andrographis paniculata had successfully suppressed the growth of malignant cancer cells
Community-based prehabilitation program: a pilot study exploring the impact of exercise and education programs on functional mobility pre-surgery and on length of stay post-total joint arthroplasty
The effect of implementing a community-based prehabilitation program prior to total
joint arthroplasty (TJA) on mobility and length of stay (LOS) in hospital post-TJA in
obese patients was investigated in this quantitative pilot study. Changes in mobility
measures from baseline, at 6 weeks and 12-weeks pre-surgery and post-surgery were
assessed using: Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS), Visual Analogue Scale
(VAS), Timed Up and Go (TUG), Self-Paced Walk Test (SPWT), and Stair Test (ST).
A prehabilitation group attended education sessions and underwent a 12-week land and
pool-based exercise program before TJA, whereas the control group received the usual
preoperative standard of care. The prehabilitation group experienced improved mobility
before and after surgery whereas the control group only saw improvements post-surgery.
The LOS for the prehabilitation group was marginally lower (0.3 days) than the control
group. In conclusion, there is evidence that a prehabilitation program prior to TJA may
reduce hospital LOS resulting in potential cost savings and improved patient mobility
measures both prior to and post-surgery
