Predicting players’ performance in the game of cricket using machine learning
Player selection is one of the most important tasks for any sport and cricket is no exception.
The performance of the players depends on various factors such as the opposition team, the
venue, his current form etc. The team management, the coach and the captain select eleven
players for each match from a squad of 15 to 20 players. They analyze different characteristics
and the statistics of the players to select the best playing 11 for each match. Each batsman
contributes by scoring maximum runs possible and each bowler contributes by taking
maximum wickets and conceding minimum runs. This thesis attempts to predict the
performance of players as how many runs each batsman will score and how many wickets each
bowler will take for both teams in one-day international cricket matches. Both the problems
are targeted as classification problems where number of runs and number of wickets are
classified in different ranges. We used Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, multiclass SVM and
Decision Tree classifiers to generate the prediction models for both the problems. Random
Forest classifier was found to be the most accurate for both problems
Knowledge of Northern Ontario School of Medicine students on the subject of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
Canadian physicians report feeling unprepared regarding the diagnosis and treatment
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This thesis investigates the knowledge that future
healthcare practitioners gain during their time at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine
(NOSM), as well as the advice they would give to women regarding the use of alcohol during
pregnancy.
This two-phased mixed methods study included two surveys (N=24), and a semistructured
interview (N=8). Results indicate that NOSM students are unaware of the specifics of
FASD and are not confident in their knowledge on the subject. Barriers to learning were
identified as: (1) inconsistencies between student educational experiences; and (2) the
overwhelming nature of medical education. Solutions involving enhanced opportunity for
exposure, supporting experience through formal curriculum, and attaining knowledge from
different sources are proposed. Through improving medical education, future physicians will be
better prepared to care for individuals with FASD, thereby improving support for these
individuals
Développement de programmes et de services palliatifs pédiatriques dans la communauté et à domicile
Cette recherche qualitative de nature exploratoire a comme objectif général d’analyser, de
comprendre le manque de services de soins palliatifs pédiatriques dans la communauté et
à domicile pour les enfants et leurs familles. Cette recherche a permis de développer et
d'approfondir des connaissances entourant les soins palliatifs pédiatriques quant à la culture
de ce milieu, à l’organisation et la prestation des services. L’objet de notre étude a en toile
de fond d’analyse la théorie des systèmes, notamment, l’approche centrée sur l’enfant et sa
famille et l’approche biopsychosociale. La compréhension et l’analyse de ce milieu de
soins se fait en tenant compte des perspectives, des préoccupations et défis qui sont propres
aux familles, aux services médicaux et ainsi qu’aux services communautaires.
Sur le plan méthodologique, nous avons rencontré trois parents accompagnant leur enfant
et deux professionnelles : une infirmière spécialisée en soins palliatifs pédiatrique ayant
œuvré 15 ans en milieu hospitalier qui travaille actuellement pour un hospice
communautaire et une gestionnaire de programmes pour un hospice ayant une
spécialisation en soins palliatifs pédiatriques. Une analyse de contenu a permis de dégager
les points forts et les écueils et embûches au développement des programmes et services
dans la communauté.
Les résultats démontrent que l’offre de services de soins palliatifs pédiatriques est une
surspécialisation des équipes soignantes des hôpitaux en raison des traitements complexes
et de la rareté de certaines maladies infantiles. De ce fait, les services en communauté sont
peu équipés pour répondre adéquatement aux besoins de soins particuliers de ces enfants
et de leurs familles. L'analyse révèle également des obstacles dans la transition des soins
vers le milieu communautaire qui n’est pas souvent préparé pour offrir des services à
l’enfant et sa famille en raison du manque de ressources et une pénurie au niveau de
l’expertise médicale.
En conclusion, nous proposons une synthèse ainsi qu’une interprétation des résultats et des
pistes pour une recherche-action ultérieure plus approfondie sur la mise en application d’un
travail de collaboration en interdisciplinarité entre les services hospitaliers et les services
communautaires. Ce travail de collaboration en interdisciplinarité aura pour effet
d’accroître le niveau d’expertise, aidera à assurer une meilleure coordination et une

Smudge and mirrors: representations of First Nations knowledge in the Sudbury Catholic District School Board
This research seeks to explore the understanding of, and representation of Indigenous
knowledges within elementary schools within the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.
Moreover, the research seeks to examine the perceived barriers that are faced by educators in the
representation of Indigenous knowledges within elementary urban schools. The research will
conclude by exploring some recommendations on reshaping educational institutions to better
incorporate Indigenous content and knowledge within elementary schools.
This research confirms what First Nations parents, communities and students already know,
western systems of education are continuing to fail First Nations students and by extension First
Nations communities as they continue to perpetuate colonial approaches to the delivery
of education for First Nations students
Biological recovery in an urban industrial stream: using the reference condition approach to assess the current state of Junction Creek, Sudbury, Ontario
Benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Junction Creek, Sudbury, have recovered remarkably
since the 1970s, following government initiatives to lower atmospheric pollution, the
implementation of mine wastewater treatment, and Greater Sudbury’s Regreening Program. To
understand contemporary temporal and spatial patterns of biological condition in this stream
system, I employed a number of benthic community metrics and the Reference Condition
Approach. There was little evidence of temporal trends in the benthic macroinvertebrate
communities across the 2003-2015 study period, however there was strong evidence of
community composition, water and sediment quality differences among study sites.
This urban industrial stream is affected by multiple stressors (straightening, culverts, urban and
mining pollutants, overflow from sewer outfalls, etc.), which accumulate as the water flows
downstream. Lime-treated metal mining effluent forms the headwaters, which receive cold
groundwater from the upper reaches and is further diluted by the Maley tributary before reaching
the heavily urbanized city. In these upper reaches, community metrics that are indicative of
sensitive organisms and higher diversity are elevated and metal levels are lowest within the study
area. Biological and chemical conditions decrease slightly heading downstream, but are much
better following the millions of dollars spent in 2001 on diverting acid mine drainage
underground to be treated kilometers away before being discharged into the creek below the
study area. Treated surface runoff from a historic mine site, and a portion of each the Clarabelle
Mill property and slag storage area from one of the world’s largest metal mining and smelting
complexes in the world feed Nolin Creek, which then enters the stream through concrete box
culverts that run beneath the city’s downtown core before re-surfacing and flowing South of the
city. Despite the recent appearance of fish within Nolin Creek, it is still a major source of
contaminants to Junction Creek, with elevated water and sediment metal levels and low benthic
macroinvertebrate community diversity and abundance.
This research showed that use of select benthic macroinvertebrate community metrics served as a
better tool to assess biological conditions within the stream than comparison to near-pristine
reference sites, but that local reference sites would serve as a best practise since they take
account for naturally high regional metal levels, and the effects from decades of atmospheric
pollution have had on Sudbury soil, lakes and streams. Additionally, test site benthic macroinvertebrate metric scores were surprisingly similar to those of pristine reference sites, but
abundance was much higher at all reference sites. The apparent similarities between test and
reference biotic conditions may be due to high nutrients and ions found in urban environments,
inappropriate matching of reference and test sites or numerous cumulative effects. It was
therefore recommended that ecosystem processes and functioning be studied in order to obtain a
more accurate view of the current biological condition of Junction Creek. Finally, aqueous metal
levels have decreased substantially and benthic macroinvertebrate community abundance and
richness have increased substantially in the last 50 years, but appear to be at a relatively stable
point currently, although the variation in both metrics is generally higher than those of reference
sites. Biological and chemical conditions will likely not improve until the major current stressors
(residual contamination of sediments and soils, and addition of mining effluent) are removed and
habitat is improved
Spatial and temporal relationship between intrusive rocks and gold mineralisation in the Miller Dyke Complex, Abitibi greenstone belt, Ontario, Canada
The Miller Dyke Complex (MDC) is located 15 km south of the Kirkland Lake gold camp. It
consists of a series of narrow, structurally controlled dykes, that range from felsic to mafic in
composition, and are spatially associated with Au, ± Cu, ± Mo mineralisation. The MDC provides
an excellent locality for a careful study of the igneous petrology and the different alteration
assemblages associated with the mineralisation. The study is focused on the metasomatic
processes related with alkali elements. It is shown that strong sodic alteration has a strong
influence on the textural, mineralogical, and geochemical features of these rocks. Previously
undescribed textures and mineralisation styles are documented, as well as the existence of a
Paleoproterozoic hydrothermal reactivation event with metal deposition or remobilisation. The
relationship between the alkali metasomatism and gold mineralisation is discussed within the
regional context of the Abitibi greenstone belt
La maladie d’Alzheimer et ses conséquences sur les dimensions de la santé de la personne
Aujourd’hui, on estime mondialement que près de 50 millions d’individus sont atteints de la
maladie d’Alzheimer. Ce nombre doublera presque chaque 20 ans pour atteindre un nombre de
près 75 millions de personnes en 2030 et 131,5 millions en 2050. De plus, la maladie d’Alzheimer
a des conséquences sur toutes les dimensions de la personne humaine. La présente étude, qui
découle d’une recherche de type « analyse documentaire », discute de ces conséquences sur quatre
dimensions intrinsèques de la santé jugées les plus importantes, à savoir a) la dimension sociale,
b) mentale, c) physique et et d) émotionnelle. L’état actuel de l’impact de la maladie d’Alzheimer
sur ces dimensions, de même que les perspectives de stratégies d'intervention auprès des individus
atteints de cette maladie, sont aussi abordés
Dementia informal caregivers’ experience with hospital discharge planning post-discharge
Little is known about dementia informal caregivers’ experience with discharge planning,
and whether the discharge planning hospital team, including the physician, nurse
practitioner (NP), social worker (SW), and other allied health practitioners, meet the
needs of caregivers both in- and post-hospital. This interpretative phenomenological study
examines dementia informal caregivers’ experience with hospital discharge planning
post-discharge from an Ontario urban hospital. Five informal caregivers were interviewed
using semi-structured telephone interviews, and data was analyzed using Benner’s
interpretative analysis process (1985; 1994). Research findings suggest that dementia
informal caregivers consider their role as challenging due to many stressors and demands
and poor discharge planning. Informal caregivers reveal that information sharing and the
arrangement of community resources during the discharge planning process was
inconsistent. They felt abandoned and unsupported throughout the discharge plan, as
defined by lack of communication and dissemination of caregiver resources. As a result,
caregivers had difficulty understanding and managing their loved ones’ health care needs
after hospital discharge. Research findings can help inform discharge planning practices
and standards as it pertains to dementia informal caregivers
Northern Ontario nurse practitioner job satisfaction and intent to leave: a constructivist grounded theory study
The current document is a three-paper dissertation exploring northern Ontario primary healthcare Nurse Practitioners’ (NPs) job satisfaction and intent to leave. The characteristics of NP job satisfaction and intent to leave are poorly understood. The broader work on NP job satisfaction and intent to leave has relied heavily on quantitative cross-sectional methods. I decided to use qualitative methods in order to seek deeper understanding of NP job satisfaction and intent to leave. The sample for this constructivist grounded theory study included 18 primary healthcare NPs working full time in primary healthcare in Northern Ontario. Telephone interviews were conducted and transcripts were analyzed. We found that primary healthcare NP job satisfaction was dependent upon a particular mix of “satisfiers”. These satisfiers included independence and interdependence, challenging work, quiet moments, and beginnings and endings. NPs experience dissatisfaction related to role recognition, geographical distances, overwork, and feeling overwhelmed. Key features were identified as contributors to primary healthcare NP intent to leave. These included inadequate remuneration, the lack of a provincial government pension plan, the quality of their relationships with management and administration and extended benefits programs. Among those considering leaving a primary healthcare NP position, key features of a new position would include adequate remuneration, generous extended benefits, and a shorter distance from home and practice sites. Some respondents intending to leave their current practice setting identified that they would be seeking work outside of NP practice. This study served to clarify key job features and processes related to job satisfaction and intent to leave among Northern Ontario’s primary healthcare NP population. A broader theory of NP job satisfaction and intent to leave emanated from the analysis of relationships among these key concepts within the study. The findings of this study could serve to inform initiatives to retain and recruit primary healthcare NPs within both rural and urban practice settings across northern Ontario
First principle study of the electronic structure of semiconductors for photovoltaic applications: organic-inorganic perovskites
The ill effects of climate change affect all trends, and the steps taken in
the drive to reduce global emissions will reverberate for thousands of years.
It is among the most significant and urgent problems we face, and so it is
immensely important to call upon existing and near future technologies for
generating clean electricity. For now, the most talked-about renewable energy source is solar. It is a massive resource by any standard and it has the potential to play an essential role in decreasing the dependency on crude oil and reducing fossil fuel emissions. Today, the best-performing perovskite
cell has reached a power conversion efficiency of 22.1%. This unprecedented
rise in efficiency for a photovoltaic technology suggests a sunny outlook,
but before a large-scale deployment of the technology, there are still some
real questions that must be addressed. The best performing perovskite cells
contain lead, which is very toxic and damaging to the environment, and
are unstable in humid conditions. Also, the fundamental working of these
materials is still largely unknown. The technological base of photovoltaics
is becoming progressively dependent on complicated materials, and so it is
important to systematically investigate the nature of the electronic structure. In the present work, the electronic structure of five perovskite compounds, MAPbBr3, CsPbX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) and RbPbI3, are systematically
studied from first principles using the all-electron, full potential, linearized
augmented plane wave ((L)APW) + local orbitals (lo) method as implemented in the WIEN2k code. It is noted that: (i) the band gap of ABX3
increases when A changes from MA to Cs; (ii) as X changes from Br to Cl
to I, the band gap increases; and (iii) as A changes from Cs to Rb, the band
gap mostly remains the same
