Perceptions of early childhood educators on the effectiveness of language stimulation strategies for preschoolers
This study explores how early childhood educators (ECEs) perceive language stimulation strategies (LSS) and professional development (PD) programs in French-language preschool settings in Northern Ontario. In minority Francophone communities, many children start daycare with limited French exposure, posing distinct challenges for language learning. This research is part of a broader action research project that looked into children’s language exposure patterns and introduced targeted interventions. Nineteen ECEs from five early childhood centres in Sudbury, Ontario, participated in semi-structured interviews about their experiences with LSS and PD. These interviews were conducted via Zoom, transcribed, and analyzed with IRaMuTeQ software to identify common words, thematic groupings, and trends across different sites.
Findings indicate that ECEs emphasise the importance of high-quality adult-child interactions, including getting down to the child’s level, repetition, translation, and activities aligned with children’s interests. Songs were also noted as particularly effective for fostering engagement and language development. However, some strategies, especially verbalization, were difficult to understand and implement. Theoretical PD content was seen as less accessible than hands-on training, underscoring the value of experiential learning.
Educators highlighted the usefulness of resources provided by the Carrefour francophone de Sudbury, such as books and songs, although several expressed a desire for more detailed examples and materials. While ECEs observed positive changes in children’s vocabulary and confidence, the study design limited the ability to link these outcomes to the intervention directly. Children’s perceptions of note-taking during interviews
During forensic interviews with children, interviewers frequently use best practice protocols which emphasize the use of open-ended and cued-invitation questions in order to maximize productivity of the children’s narrative while minimizing the potential for suggestions. Despite the potential utility of note-taking practices in formulating cued-invitation questions, little is known in terms of the potential impact of note-taking practices during forensic interviews with children. In the current study, child participants (N = 52, Mage = 9.6, 6 to 12 years old) watched a series of interviews (8 videos) that displayed an adult interviewing a child with differences in note-taking procedure (i.e., no notes condition, notes condition, notes introduced condition, no notes and looking down condition). Child participants were then asked to rate the interviewers and the use of note-taking.
This study found that a high percentage of participants noticed when note-taking occurred during interviews, with significantly more positive perceptions of relationship quality when note-taking was introduced, while also reporting some nervousness during the note-taking conditions. However, comfort levels remained unaffected by whether the interviewer was taking notes, indicating that while note-taking influences certain perceptions, it does not affect children’s comfort overall in the interview setting. The current research provides valuable information on children’s perceptions of note-taking during interviews, which will impact recommendations for forensic interviewing practices with vulnerable and maltreated populations
Comparing conventional and novel lithium extraction methods for a sustainable future
Nowadays, lithium is used everywhere such as in electric cars, to store energy and also in gadgets that people use regularly. Because the need for lithium is increasing, there are lots of worries about the extraction methods and exacerbating outcomes for the environment. Some ancient methods for example hard rock mining and brine evaporation are used but that also come with some negative outcomes such as wastage of water, harmful environmental consequences and extreme energy consumption. To navigate this matter, researchers have invented new and novel techniques which include nanomaterial-based adsorption, membrane filtration, electrochemical separation and photocatalytic processes. Well, these advanced technologies not only offer a high efficiency but also improve the selectivity, and they also reduce the environmental impacts in comparison to traditional methods. However, factors such as high costs, scalability, may limit the use of these techniques on a large scale. This essay reviews the traditional as well as emerging lithium extraction technologies to analyze the benefits, issues and future directions. To conclude, to have a sustainable lithium extraction not only requires a combination of advanced technologies but also need productive and recycling methods to ensure a long-term lithium supply chain
Les perceptions des enseignant.e.s francophones d’éducation physique et santé (EPS) de l’élémentaire en Ontario relatives au développement de la pensée critique des élèves en classe d’EPS
Cette étude vise à comprendre les perceptions des enseignant.e.s francophones d’éducation physique et santé (EPS) de l’élémentaire en Ontario concernant le développement de la pensée critique (PC) chez leurs élèves. Elle explore leur compréhension de la nature et du rôle de la PC, ainsi que les stratégies pédagogiques qu’ils déclarent utiliser. Malgré l’importance accordée à la PC dans le programme-cadre ontarien (MÉO, 2019), peu d’études portent sur sa mise en œuvre en EPS. S’inscrivant dans le courant de la « pensée des enseignants », cette recherche qualitative exploratoire repose sur un questionnaire et des entrevues menées auprès de 26 enseignant.e.s. L’analyse des déclarations des participant.e.s révèle une conceptualisation partielle de la nature et une meilleure conceptualisation du rôle de la PC ainsi qu’une connaissance très élaborée de l’utilisation des stratégies actives centrées sur l’élève (jeux, discussions réflexives, études de cas). L’étude recommande d’approfondir les recherches sur les pratiques effectives pour évaluer concrètement la mise en œuvre des déclarations dans le développement de la PC en contexte d’EPS
Harvesting microalgae using ceramic and polymeric crossflow membrane systems
Harvesting microalgae from its growth media remains a challenge for the industrial production of microalgal biomass and associated products. Harvesting microalgae, specifically Scenedesmus sp., using crossflow ceramic and hollow fiber membrane techniques is studied in this thesis. A bench-scale membrane harvesting system was designed and operated with 0.2 μm, 0.45 μm, 0.8 μm and 1.4 μm ceramic membranes; and 0.1 μm, 0.2 μm and 0.45 μm hollow fiber membranes. Notably, all of the tested pore sizes achieved 100% microalgae biomass recovery for both types of membrane. The highest filtration flux achieved was 184 L/m2/h, when using the 1.4 μm ceramic membrane at a crossflow velocity of 0.5 m/s. For both membrane types, critical transmembrane pressure points existed, beyond which further increasing the transmembrane pressure (TMP) did not result in higher filtration flux. Since all the membrane pore sizes achieved the desired microalgae biomass rejection rate, the importance of membrane operation needs to be taken into consideration. Among various methods used to maintain operational efficiency, the use of backwash stands out due to its advantages, including no required chemical addition, energy saving and ease of operational design. Backwash effectiveness was affected by various conditions, including backwash duration, flux and intervals. The most efficient backwash was obtained with the 1.4 μm ceramic membrane, when the backwash flux was 2.0 times the filtration flux, with a 30 seconds duration and a 480 seconds (8 minutes) backwash interval. This increased the filtration flux by 70%. Additionally, the 0.2 μm hollow fiber membrane demonstrated significantly better filtration flux maintain ability compared to the 1.4 μm ceramic membrane, an average of 2.5 times higher flux was observed from the filtration cycles
The impacts of sex and genetic background on the response of Drosophila melanogaster to essential and non-essential metal toxicity.
The following thesis investigates the impact of biological sex and genetic background on
the response to copper and nickel toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster. Sex differences are
historically understudied across biology despite significantly impacting metabolism, disease, and
response to toxicants like toxic metals. Understanding the sexual dimorphism of metal toxicity is
important for understanding the impact of metal pollution on the surrounding community and
environment of mining communities around the globe. I predict that biological sex and genetic
background will have a significant impact on the fly response to copper and nickel toxicity. I
used the model organism D. melanogaster in multiple lethality assays to determine how four
different isogenic lines and the two sexes respond to both copper and nickel toxicity. I performed
multiple lethality assays using various concentrations of nickel and copper which concluded that
sex and genetic background had a significant impact on the fly response to metal toxicity. The
results of the lethality assays were supported by a subsequent starvation assay and measurement
of ingested nickel content by inductively-coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results of
both the lethality assays and measurement of ingested nickel suggest that the common general
metal response pathway which is responsible for maintaining metal homeostasis is significantly
impacted by sex and genetic background.Master of Science (MSc) in Chemical Science
Évaluation des stratégies d'intégration des nouveau arrivants francophones de Hamilton : une étude qualitative
Inspirée de notre parcours d’intégration et conduite suivant la méthode qualitative
englobant un cadre interculturel rattaché à la théorie des reproductions de Freitag, cette
recherche visait à analyser, à partir d’un échantillon représentatif l’attitude des nouveaux
arrivants francophones de Hamilton âgés de 18 ans et plus à l’intégration à partir, ou non,
de leur adhésion aux valeurs culturelles traditionnelles de leur pays d’origine ou aux
valeurs culturelles modernes de la société d’accueil afin de comprendre si le processus
d’intégration des nouveaux arrivants relève de leur volonté ou des exigences de la réalité
de la société d’accueil.
Ainsi, grâce à la réalisation de 10 entrevues semi-dirigées analysées suivant la
phénoménologie herméneutique, cette recherche a permis de comprendre que l’intégration
se complique lorsque le nouvel arrivant veut conserver ici au Canada, tout l’héritage
culturel qu’il a laissé là-bas dans son pays d’origine.
Cette recherche montre que l’intégration des personnes issues de l’immigration au Canada
ne peut fonctionner « pour faire société » qu’à partir d’un cadre interculturel c’est-à-dire
par la recomposition, à partir d’un noyau de valeurs culturelles, sociales et politiques qui
accueille, d’une nouvelle culture collective dont le principe de base demeurera la
préservation des traditions familiales et culturelles qui sont conformes aux valeurs
canadiennes : la primauté du droit, l’égalité entre les femmes et les hommes, la séparation
des pouvoirs politique et religieux, la dignité humaine, l’égalité devant la loi etc. Il s’agit
moins d’un jugement de valeur sur la culture des nouveaux arrivants que d’un constat sur
l’impact de ce maintien de l’héritage et du mélange de cultures multiples sur la cohérence
culturelle ici au Canada.
Par conséquent, cette recherche stipule que la solution aux défis d’intégration des
nouveaux arrivants francophones dans la société canadienne réside non seulement dans la
redéfinition ou un examen sérieux de la politique du multiculturalisme, mais aussi dans
l’arrêt de l’instrumentalisation de l’immigration.Maîtrise en Service Socia
Une réflexion critique sur la pratique de la réadaptation professionnelle avec des personnes en situation de handicap à la recherche d'emploi
Les personnes en situation de handicap sont confrontées par de nombreuses injustices sociales,
surtout en matière d’emploi. Pour explorer davantage cette problématique, j’ai complété un stage
spécialisé auprès de Performance Plus - Soins en réadaptation, une agence offrant des services de
réadaptation professionnelle aux personnes avec un handicap dans la région d’Ottawa. Dans cet
essai, je présente ma démarche de planification et de réalisation du stage, ainsi qu’une analyse de
pratique basé sur le modèle de réflexion critique élaboré par Fook et Gardner (2007). En
m’appuyant sur l’humanisme, la théorie critique, et une conceptualisation multifactorielle du
handicap et de l’accessibilité, mon analyse révèle des constatations importantes concernant les
dynamiques de pouvoir social qui influencent ma pratique de soutien à l’emploi d’une part, et
nuisent, dans une perspective structurelle, à l’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap

From sonic space to sonic place: an architectural and urban design approach to enhancing community soundscapes in Northern Ontario
Whether it is a piece of architecture, the urban
environment as a whole, or the natural world,
sound is an ever-present condition of the physical
environment in which it exists. Despite this
integral relationship, the role that sound plays
in how people interact and understand their
surroundings is often vastly undervalued and
even ignored. Thus, noise pollution has become
a growing global concern, de-sensualizing human
reality through negative impacts on human
health and well-being. As the ‘Gateway to the
North’, the city of North Bay is a transportation
hub, featuring multiple highways and rail lines
that contribute to a noisy environment dedicated
to the convenience of high-speed travel rather
than the cultivation of engaging public places.

A youth restorative justice and rehabilitation center: designing with dignity and compassion for victims and young offenders
By employing adaptive reuse and critical conservation as design
strategies, a Youth Restorative Justice and Rehabilitation Center
is proposed within the former Windsor Arena, which attempts to
target the root causes of problematic crime in Windsor, Ontario.
Restorative Justice practices move away from traditional penal
systems and typologies, which are punitive and dehumanizing, in
favour of a destigmatized, trauma-informed experience, sensitive
to all human conditions. This thesis explores how architectural
rehabilitation can be used to restore individuals and become a
catalyst for meaningful change in the mindset and behaviours
of young offenders, anticipating their deterrence from a life
of crime or incarceration. Through architectural intervention
and focused, but varied programming, this thesis attempts to
build a restorative community, addressing matters of Justice,
personal betterment and urban design. By designing with dignity
and compassion, users can expect to experience healing and
reconciliation as well as healthy relationships and improved
