Seismic hazard analysis using mapping techniques for underground, narrow-vein metal mines
This thesis investigates the ability to forecast the occurrence of large events through
node-based hazard mapping at KGHM’s Morrison Mine located in Levack, ON. Nodebased
hazard maps function by pasting a heat-map onto a solid model of mine workings
to identify, visually, the areas that have experienced high levels of seismicity. The notion
within this research is that it is possible to forecast the occurrence of large seismic events
with a reasonable degree of effectiveness using a trailing period of 6-months and a
forecast period of the following 2-months. Using the following parameters, each hazard
map has been analyzed over three different forecast periods:
• Cumulative Seismic Energy
• Cumulative Seismic Moment
• Number of Events > Defined Magnitude
o M > 0
o M > -0.5
o M > -1
• Number of Events > Apparent Stress, 80th percentile
The forecast periods analyzed were April – June 2016, June – August 2016, and August –
October 2016 with a success rate (the number of events successfully forecasted) between
38% and 67% and false alarm rates (the number of denoted hazard areas that did not
experience large events in the forecast period) between 41% and 65%
Comparative molecular analyses between red maple (Acer rubrum) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) exposed to soil metal contamination: metal translocation, gene expression, and DNA methylation.
he main objectives of the present study were to 1) compare the physiological responses and
gene expression in red maple (Acer rubrum) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) exposed
to metal contamination, 2) determine if epigenetic events are associated with metal resistance in
A. rubrum, and 3) assess global gene expression in A. rubrum exposed to different doses of nickel.
Metal analyses of soil and plant tissues revealed that P. tremuloides is an accumulator of Mg, Zn,
and Ni while A. rubrum does not accumulate these metals in the leaves as it shows avoidance as
the main mechanism of coping with soil metal accumulation. Comparative analysis of gene
expression revealed that the four genes tested (Nramps4, Nas3, At2G, and MRP4) were more
upregulated in P. tremuloides compared to A. rubrum in a field study. AT2G and MRP4 genes
were significantly down regulated in A. rubrum from the targeted metal contaminated sites
compared to those from uncontaminated areas but environmental factors driving this differential
gene expression couldn’t be established. The growth chamber experiment, showed differential
gene expression based on p values when the effects of nickel doses were compared. There were
more upregulated than down regulated genes in resistant genotypes compared to susceptible
genotypes. Most of these genes are associated with coping with abiotic stressors and involves
tolerance and detoxification mechanisms. There was a significant variation in the level of cytosine
methylation among the metal-contaminated sites, with significant negative correlations between
bioavailable nickel / copper content and cytosine methylation being observed.
In Conclusion, the present study reveals that A. rubrum exhibits the avoidance strategy as the
main mechanism of coping with soil metal accumulation. However, a more informative and indepth analysis of this mechanism would be very beneficial in deciding whether it is strictly
physiological or genetic. The role of epigenetics can be further understood by determining the
distribution of DNA methylation in both A. rubrum and P. tremuloides
An evaluation of the quality of care of diabetic patients with multimorbidity at nurse practitioner-Led clinics in the North East and North Simcoe Muskoka LHINs
A multiple case study was undertaken with five Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics (NPLCs) in in the North East and North Muskoka Simcoe Local Health Integration Networks in Ontario, Canada. The purpose was to evaluate the quality of care in NPLCs, specifically to address the following research questions: What is the relationship between organizational processes in the NPLC model and the care of diabetic patients with multimorbidity? To what extent are clinical practice guideline indicators for diabetes care being met for patients with multimorbidity in five NPLCs? How do nurse practitioners practicing at NPLCs evaluate the impact of the NPLC model on the quality of the care they provide to diabetic patients with multimorbidity? The research was guided by the Donabedian Quality Framework. The study included three types of data collection. First, documents related to NPLCs were collected and the impact of the nurse practitioner (NP) as primary care provider was analyzed. Then the Chronic Care Model was used to guide the development of a chart audit in each of the five NPLCs, conducted on 30 charts per clinic (n= 150) for non-pregnant, adult diabetic patients with multimorbidity. Analysis determined relationships between diabetes indicator scores and organizational and patient data. Next, 8 NPs from 4 of the 5 NPLCs participated in interviews, guided by semi-structured questions arising from the document review and chart audit analysis. Interpretive description methods were used to analyze the transcripts and identify themes. A cross-case analysis was conducted to compare the results of all analyses across NPLCs. Themes emerging from this multiple case analysis confirmed that the NP is the primary care provider and clinical leader at NPLCs, which has contributed positively to the quality of care in NPLCs. NPLCs have suffered from poor NP recruitment and retention. This, along with insufficient health care resources in the communities where NPLCs are located and high patient vulnerability, has had a negative influence on the quality of care. Strategies including mentoring and changes to funding offer possible solutions to improve the quality of care at NPLCs. (336 words
Geophysical properties of an epithermal Au-Ag deposit in British Columbia, Canada
The Newton Au-Ag deposit is an intermediate sulfidation state epithermal system in
British Columbia, Canada. Multiple types of geophysical data are interpreted and evaluated with
drillcore petrophysical, geochemical and geological observations to better understand the
geophysical signature of the Newton epithermal system. Airborne γ-ray datasets show elevated
emission counts of K, eTh, and eU over the Newton epithermal system that are caused by
hydrothermal alteration. Drillcore γ-ray measurements also show high potassium concentrations
related to the K-rich phyllosilicates in the form of argillic and quartz-sericite alteration
assemblages. Magnetization vector inversion (MVI) is used to recover an unconstrained 3D
magnetization vector model of the system on regional and deposit scales. The regional MVI has
resolved a deep concentric shaped low magnetic zone that is interpreted as a porphyry system
beneath the epithermal deposit. At the deposit scale, 3D direct current (DC) resistivity and
induced polarization (IP) inversion, and unconstrained MVI revealed finer details of epithermal
system architecture. Cooperative DC/IP and magnetic inversion, at the deposit scale, constrained
the magnetic susceptibility model and recovered a more precise susceptibility image of the
epithermal system that is well-matched with borehole geology. The integrated geophysical
interpretation helped to resolve several 3D latent geological features in places without direct
access to drillcore samples. We identified four petrophysical domains based on the three cooperatively inverted physical properties, including electrical resistivity, IP chargeability, and
magnetic susceptibility. The combined geophysical models differentiated porphyritic intrusions
(chargeability/susceptibility lows), disseminated sulfides (resistivity lows and chargeability
highs), a Cu-rich zone in mafic volcanic rocks (susceptibility/chargeability highs and resistivity
lows), and a Au-Ag-Cu-rich zone with silicification in felsic volcanic rocks (chargeability/susceptibility lows and resistivity highs). These petrophysical domains also
provide useful exploration vectors for identification of similar epithermal systems
The intersecting social identities of Canadian national team female boxers
Understanding athletes as whole person through the lens of social identities is an
emerging line of inquiry in both the academic and practical fields, within sport
psychology (Schinke & McGannon, 2015). Social identities can be represented as
socially constructed and group-based conceptions that people are categorized within
multiple social groups, such as gender, race, sexuality, class, education, age, ethnicity,
and disability, which constituting each person as who they are and how they relate to the
outside world (Blodgett, Schinke, McGannon & Fisher, 2014). In the previous research,
researchers portrayed athletes only through the role-based athletic identity (Ronkainen,
Kavoura, & Ryba, 2016). Utilizing social constructionism, in the current dissertation,
identities were conceptualized as multifaceted, fluid, performative, and contextually
contingent products of cultural narratives and discourses (Schinke & McGannon, 2015),
saturated with power, making individuals privileged in certain cultural discourses while
subordinated in others (Collins, 2000). To develop an understanding of complexity and
multiplicity of athletes, I integrated an intersectionality framework to investigate how do
athletes engage in the sport team with multiple aspects of selves within the Canadian
National Female Boxing Team. The research questions were structured as: (1) How do
the national female boxers construct multiple social identities in boxing? (2) What social
identities are privileged and what are subordinated on the Canadian National Boxing
Team? (3) What are the implications of the various culturally constructed social identities
and associated meanings for female boxers’ sport experience and wellbeing? Ten national
female boxers participated in this research. Art-based method and conversational
interview were employed to facilitate rich storied accounts around social identities

(Smith, 1999). Interpretive thematic analysis (Braun & Clark, 2016) and creative
nonfiction inquiry (Smith & McGannon, 2015) were used to organize the data around
research questions. Based on the stories and experiences athletes shared, nine social
identities were identified as salient and meaningful to athletes’ sport experience on the
National Team context, where the patriarchal, whiteness-centered; and pragmatic
discourses inform the identity inequality issues on the team. The identities were
coalesced into three groups (gender-sexuality-physicality, race and ethnicity- languagereligion,
and socioeconomic status-weight categories- the athletic level) for analysis.
Seven vignettes were presented to show the different social realities that athletes
constructed pertaining to these social identities. Following the CSP agenda, the current
project aims to empower marginalized identities and to build up a culturally inclusive
sport environment. Five conclusions were generated around the intersectionality of
athletes’ social identities, with the practical implications, recommendations, and
interventions were presented correspondingly

Dans le processus de l’immigration au Canada les candidats sont soumis à des examens médicaux dont le but n’est pas de leur garantir un bon état de santé global avant le voyage, mais plutôt pour dépister certaines maladies transmissibles et protéger les services sociaux et de santé d’un fardeau excessif. Il peut s’écouler un temps entre les examens médicaux et l’arrivée effective au Canada et la vérification de l’immunisation ne fait pas partie des examens médicaux pré-immigration. Il est important de noter que le concept très répandu de l’immigrant en bonne santé physique et mentale connait des exceptions parce que les nouveaux arrivants ne constituent pas un groupe homogène. En comparaison avec les autres immigrés, les réfugiés sont plus exposés à des pathologies liées à la précarité de leurs conditions de vie avant l’immigration. Les nouveaux arrivants se heurtent à un ensemble de barrières qui peuvent avoir une influence sur la santé physique et la santé mentale. Enfin, le peu d’expérience des professionnels de santé concernant les maladies les plus fréquentes chez les nouveaux arrivants et l’absence d’un examen médical adapté pour ces gens suggère que malgré les examens de dépistage pour l’immigration, les nouveaux arrivants au Canada en particulier ceux qui proviennent de pays à faible revenu pourraient être plus fréquemment confrontés à certains problèmes de santé non pris en charge par le professionnel de la santé
Characterization of seismic sources using sequential spatial clustering and fractal dimension
Despite years of research, unexpected seismic events in mines continue to cause damage and loss
to people, equipment, infrastructure, and reserves. This research uses novel approaches to
characterize the locations, times, and intensity of seismic events for four known seismic sources.
The seismic source case studies are the development of a ramp, the abutments around a zone of
stopes, a failing stope pillar, and a shear zone adjacent to an orebody. Each seismic source is
characterized by sequential spatial clustering, and the fractal dimension of the seismic source
parameters of location, time and intensity. The novel application of sequential spatial clustering
preserves the sequence of events within a cluster. The method can be used at any point in time
which means as a rock mass changes the seismic response is expressed and identified very early on.
Once identified, it allows the opportunity for investigation and decision making to take place as the
rock mass changes in an unexpected manner. The application of fractal dimension to seismic
source parameters revealed that the fractal nature of a parameter is not infinite but exists within a
range. The fractal range reflects the character of a seismic source. If some events occur outside
the fractal range they also provide important information about the history of the seismic source
that occur less often than the fractal range but are still possible. This research has expanded the
knowledge of when, where, and how intense seismic events can be expected for four seismic
sources using a new sequential spatial clustering method and fractal dimension characterization
Treating at-risk adolescent mothers and their children: family therapy delivered from the theraplay® model
This advanced practicum project describes a pilot project for teen mothers and
their preschool children, developed from the principles of Theraplay®, a play-based,
attachment-focused intervention. Specifically, the objective of this project was to explore
the applicability and value of using this type of intervention among adolescent mothers in
a limited service region in Sudbury, Ontario. My experience showed that using the
Theraplay model was useful in improving the relationship between adolescent mothers
and their children by promoting positive interactions. The findings indicate play-based
interventions have value with this at-risk population.Master of Social Work Progra
Air entrainment and air-water separation in hydraulic air compressors
A hydraulic air compressor (HAC) is an isothermal gas compressor that uses hydropower to
compress air, originally developed by Charles Taylor in the 1890s to supply industry with
compressed air. In the modern revival of this technology, the hydropower will be provided by
pumps rather than natural sources. As such, energy efficiency is an important driver of
component design; all of the hydropower is consumed either to overcome irreversibility or to
compress air. The compressor relies on the increasing pressure of water flowing downward in a
downcomer to compress air in the form of bubbles being dragged along with the flow. The air
entrainment process at the top of the downcomer is facilitated by a mixing head. At the bottom of
the downcomer, the bubbles are separated from the flow in a separator vessel. The objective of
this thesis is to develop the design methodology for the air entrainment and air-water separation
components on either end of the downcomer process.
Several mixing heads were tested on a small (4.5 m height) prototype HAC. The test without a
mixing head successfully entrained air, confirming that air entrainment is a system effect. Two
heads with dissimilar geometry were associated with the lowest irreversibility, leading to the
conclusion that the best design at that scale is a mixing head incorporating some form of vortex
breaker. Air entrainment is driven by a system energy balance and not exclusively by a local
Venturi geometry.
The fraction of the air successfully captured in the plenum of the separator is called the separator
effectiveness. Mechanistic models have been created to characterize both the irreversibility and
separator effectiveness of two types of gravity separator (horizontal and vertical orientation) for

the design of separators for future commercial-scale compressors. The separator effectiveness
models require as input the flow field information from computational fluid dynamics analysis
and the bubble size distribution at inlet. The bubble size distribution was measured on the small
prototype and used to select a bubble size prediction model for testing on a much larger scale (29
m height) demonstrator HAC. The displacement model for horizontal separators matched the
actual performance at the prototype scale well, particularly at high flow rate. The vertical
velocity model produced a good match for the separator on the demonstrator HAC, but not for
the same bubble size model identified on the small prototype

Ce mémoire vise à explorer le sens et les fonctions des sites commémoratifs pour les
parents endeuillés par la mort de leur enfant âgé de 15 à 25 ans. Cinq entrevues
qualitatives ont été effectuées auprès de quatre parents endeuillés et une famille
endeuillée, ayant vécu et subi la mort tragique de leurs enfants et ayant fait le choix
de maintenir un site commémoratif dans la région du Grand Sudbury.
Cette étude comporte trois objectifs. Premièrement, elle vise à décrire le sens et les
fonctions des sites commémoratifs selon la perspective de parents endeuillés en
s’appuyant sur la « théorie du Lien perpétuel »1
de Klass, Silverman et Nickman
(1996). Deuxièmement, cette étude tente de décrire la signification de maintenir un
site commémoratif (Qu’est-ce que ça veut dire ?) ainsi que les raisons pour lesquelles
