The Drug War and Regional Social Capital in Mexico
No full textThe onset of the war on drugs in Mexico at the beginning of 21st century had far-reaching effects on its citizens, including most obviously, an unprecedented increase in the homicide rate. We analyse the correlation between violence on social capital in the 32 federal states of Mexico from January 2004 to December 2016. Given the lack of data in the conflict regions of Mexico, we apply the indirect approach proposed by Guriev and Melnikov (2016), which uses internet search engine data to proxy social capital. Our results show a negative relationship between violence and social capital in Mexico. Moreover, we document a positive spatial correlation for social capital. Overall, we present an example of how the analysis of internet-based data can contribute to the understanding of socioeconomic developments in conflict regions with unreliable standard data

Das Klimaschutzgesetz des Bundes schreibt gerade für den Verkehrssektor weitreichende Reduzierungsziele vor. Die Herausforderung ist groß: Während die CO2-Emissionen in nahezu allen Sektoren (darunter Energie, Industrie, Landwirtschaft) gesunken sind, blieben sie im Verkehrssektor in den vergangenen 30 Jahren in Deutschland konstant. Durch den Beschluss des Bundesverfassungsgerichts hat das Klimaschutzgesetz des Bundes (Bundestag 2021) einen noch weiter verstärkten verbindlichen Charakter bekommen (vgl. BVerfG 2021). Klimakatastrophe und Energieabhängigkeit sowie die Vorgaben zur Luftreinhaltung und Lärmminderung machen ein zeitnahes Umdenken notwendig. Die autoorientierte Verkehrs- und Stadtplanung der letzten Jahrzehnte ist nicht zukunftsfähig. Die Mobilitätswende auf kommunaler Ebene ist eine große Chance. Die Kommunen können hier positive Zeichen setzen, indem sie die Städte als Lebensräume und nicht als Verkehrsräume begreifen. Es gilt, verstärkt das menschliche Maß in den Fokus der Stadt- und Verkehrsplanung zu rücken und Orte für Menschen zu schaffen

No full textThe Microfoundations of the Innovation-Tradition-Paradox in Family Firms
No full textFamily entrepreneurs are prone to paradoxical tensions due to the interconnectedness of the family and the firm. Despite their relevance in entrepreneurial practice, current research lacks methods to examine both microfoundations of and individual behavior in the management of paradoxes. We introduce the application of serious games as a method capable of simulating context-rich paradoxes in an immersive environment to analyze entrepreneurial decision-making. Therefore, we developed a serious game that simulates decision-making behavior in family firms regarding the innovation-tradition-paradox. We quantitatively analyze the behavior of 199 players and explore the relationship between player behavior and variables reflecting microfoundations of entrepreneurial decision-making. Our results indicate a positive relationship between a paradoxical mindset and socioemotional wealth and the choice for an ambidextrous firm strategy. With this study, we demonstrate the potential of serious games as a method for advancing (family) entrepreneurship research and behavioral management theories
