Nothing's Right, I'm Torn: A Paradox Perspective on the Navigation between Fi-nancial and Socioemotional Reference Points in Family Firms
No full textDecision-making in a family business can be complex and multifaceted, especially for family en-trepreneurs who most likely have a personal stake in both the financial success of the business and the preservation of Socioemotional Wealth endowments. Thus far, a trade-off perspective regarding those two reference points prevails in research. Contrary to this dominant perspective, we examine how individuals balance financial and socioemotional reference points. Theorizing from paradox theory, we develop a choice experiment to foster the understanding of the behavior in a dilemma situation in the context of a family business by manipulating the entire sociomaterial context, i.e., the financial and socioemotional performance. The resulting data show that individuals develop strategies that pursue financial and socioemotional goals simultaneously. We find that financial resource scarcity and SEW scarcity are sources of perceived paradoxical tensions
Zukunft smarte Kommune: Modellentwurf, Vorgehen und Handlungsempfehlungen für kleine Städte und Gemeinden
No full textDas Konzept der Smart City wird in wissenschaftlicher, politischer, medialer und projektpraktischer Hinsicht bislang überwiegend in großen Städten bearbeitet. Demgegenüber empfinden kleine, ländlich geprägte Gemeinden den Smart-City-Diskurs überwiegend als fremd. Es mangelt an inhaltlichen Modellentwürfen, Vorgehensmodellen und an kommunale Entscheidungsträger gerichtete Handlungsempfehlungen, die sich am Aufgabenportfolio, den speziellen Rahmenbedingungen und Herausforderungen kreisangehöriger Gemeinden in einer Größenklasse bis 20.000 Einwohner orientieren. Diese Forschungsarbeit widmet sich diesen Aufgabenstellungen und entwirft erstens ein inhaltliches Modell einer smarten Kommune als Spiegelbild zur smarten Stadt. Zweitens wird in dieser Arbeit auf der Grundlage von Erfahrungen baden-württembergischer Pilotkommunen ein schrittweises Vorgehen zur Entwicklung eines individuellen Modells der smarten Kommune für kleine Gemeinden aufgezeigt
Algorithmic Management for Community Health Worker in Sub-Saharan Africa: Curse or Blessing?
No full textAlgorithmic management can potentially improve healthcare delivery, for example, in community-based healthcare in low-and middle-income countries. However, most research neglects the user perspective and focuses on health-related outcomes. Consequently, we know little about the effects of algorithmic management on the user: community health workers. This paper reports on a 12-week pilot study in ComBaCaL, a community-based healthcare project tackling the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). We evaluate the Community Health Toolkit (CHT), a digital tool designed to support CHWs in community-based NCD care. We find that CHT is generally suitable for this purpose and can help CHWs to assume broader responsibilities. However, its design creates a tension between control and autonomy when confronted with reality. This tension could lead to disempowerment and attrition among CHWs. We propose design adaptations for CHT’s task scheduling, balancing the socio-technical system to resolve the tension between control and autonomy
