Staying ’Mute’ in VRChat: On the (In-)Authenticity of Embodied Avatars

    No full text
Enthusiast VRChat-users embody avatars via full-body tracking hardware which mirrors movements, gestures, and even facial expressions at home into user-generated virtual environments. Having the option to rely on physical modes of interaction exponentially expand one’s expressive repertoire in mediated social situations. Virtual self-expression encompasses how users strive to be regarded by others and subsequently how they begin to see themselves. An avatarial “me” is over time mirrored by one’s social surrounding and incorporated by an “I” (Mead 1934, Strauss 1959). In physical situations, bundles of social roles and accompanying expectations of personhood would be inscribed into bodies (Goffman 1959): Corporeality is something that can be clothed, masked or shaped to a degree, but usually remains a reliable constant. In its relative permanence during our lifetime, a body of flesh and bones serves as vessel for our social identity. As boundaries of corporeality (Bullik & Schroer 2015, Boll & Muller 2020) start to blur however, so does our understanding of the authentic self
