Leaving the Lab: How Researching Social VR Users Benefits Social VR Research
On the example of ‘Social Presence’ one can see the confining situation the research field currently finds itself in reflected: There are just as many measures for Social Presence in VR as there are definitions and jingle fallacies further exacerbate the issue (Kreijns, Xu and Weidlich 2021). By a lack of terminology grounded in lived reality, Social VR researchers are quickly entangled in fundamental discussions even when pursuing rudimentary aspects of social life, like the mere awareness of an interactional opposite. Although these discussions are essential, they happen under constrained conditions which glance past real people who already live in VR today. Inhabitants of Social VR platforms deeply embody their avatars, create, collaborate and upkeep close relationships. Long-term users have a wealth of lived experience in Social VR whereby they gain sensibilities for interpreting transformed social cues (Bailenson & Beal 2006) and re-learn complex body techniques (Mauss 1934) to add depth to their social interactions.VR research can and should draw upon this experience
