Microplastics in sand burrower cuneate wedge shell, donax Cuneatus of Nilaveli, Trincomalee beach Sri Lanka
Microplastic (MPs) is a ubiquitous pollutant in both the waters and sediment of marine
environments. Its small size (< 5mm) has made it readily available for the marine
organisms to ingest during foraging and burrowing. Investigating the potential of MPs
intake by burrowing sandy shore (SS) bivalves could be considered as a crucial
experimental spectacle in screening of MPs in beach sediment. Further, it would assist
in comprehend the trophic transfer of MPs from beach sediments to molluscs and the
possibility of transferring MPs through the coastal food chains. A 100 m stretch of SS
was sampled for Donax cuneatus (n=9) which were trapped in washed away slender
wart weed, Gracillaria lemaneiformis on the SS by random quadrate sampling at
Nilaveli beach, Sri Lanka, followed by stored frozen for MPs detection. Bivalves were
defrosted; wet weight of the tissue samples was measured and alkaline tissue digestion
was performed (10% KOH) to extract MPs. The filtered tissue samples were oven dried
at 40˚ C overnight and exposed to microscopic observation under a stereoscopic
microscope. Tissue samples of the D. cuneatus had MPs and the majority were threads
(2.928±1.176 items/g, mean tissue wet weight = 3.077±1.176 g). The SS burrowing
bivalves were contaminated with MPs trapped among the sand particles which
eventually would act as a bridging biotic vector for MPs from beach sand to the higher
trophic levels in the coastal food chains. Thus, it is recommended to take measures to
avoid polluting the SS shore with single used MPs and to employ adequate beach
cleaning to remove macro plastics which eventually weathered to MPs with the time in
order to conserve the unseen lives in sandy shores
A study of the thermal effect of drilling glass fiber reinforced polymer composites
Composite laminates are the exceptional quality materials for many applications,
including aerospace and aircraft structural components. Composites offer advantages
like enhanced fatigue, corrosion resistance, and increased specific strengths and
stiffness over conventional materials like steel and aluminium. However, their low heat
conductivity limits their application due to machining complexity. Overheating during
cutting can damage the drilled hole's surface polish and dimensional accuracy, making
it crucial to control cutting settings and use the right conditions. Goal of this study is to
assess how well cutting fluid based on vegetable oil performs when machining the
Glass fiber composite. To provide the ideal machining environment, machining
responses are also compared to dry and wet cutting circumstances. The Taguchi
Orthogonal Array (L9) was utilized in the experiment, which was initiated in a dry
atmosphere. Thus, for the experiment, nine holes were used. The L9 orthogonal array
has three levels and three parameters. The mean values of the temperatures obtained
from this L9 array test were the lowest with the existing cutting fluid (Aquatex 3180).
The highest mean temperature value is 46.25°C with dry condition. Here the drill bit
diameter was 12mm and the speed of the drill machine was 500 rpm. The lowest mean
temperature value is 27.40°C with Cutting Fluid (Aquatex 3180). Here the drill bit
diameter was 12mm and the speed of the drill machine was 700 rpm. So, the cutting
fluid Aquatex 3180 (Existing Cutting Fluid) is superior, according to experimental
research. Additionally, the features of these vegetable oil-based fluids can be improved
by utilizing surfactants, nanoparticles, or other additives to improve the qualities of
coconut oil, making them more comparable to the cutting fluid already used in the
market
Determinants of work life balance: special reference to female teachers in Akkaraipattu educational zone in Sri Lanka
Work Life Balance (WLB) is an applicable problem in the evolving the world
which gained noticeable attention of numerous researchers and scholars. Also,
still is a rolling an unsolved problem among employers and employees,
especially among women. The study aims to investigate the determinants of
WLB of female teachers. Emotional intelligence (EI), job stress (JS), and
technology advancement (TA) were selected for the study from the literature
review. 186 teachers were selected as sample size through simple random
sampling and a structured questionnaire was used to collect data from these
respondents. Out of 186 samples, 143 respondents were responded and used
for the analysis. The outcomes revealed there is a strong positive association
between EI and WLB and TA and WLB, medium negative correlation between
JS and WLB. Further multiple regression analysis disclosed that 73% of total
variation of WLB explained by EI, JS and TA. The results of the study provide
a better and more important understanding of WLB and the significance of improving
the WLB of female teachers and other female workers as well. Furthermore,
the recommendation of the study would be to enlighten the female teachers, other
female workers, and managers to accomplish the WLB all the way through the
successful organization of these three factors
Role of siddha medicine graduates in primary health care: an overview of perspectives and challenges of the unit of Siddha Medicine University of Jaffna
Introduction: Siddha is one of the Tamils most ancient medicines as preserved
the mother of the medical system. The expression of siddha means prominent
truth of “one whom consummate” and mentions to completed proprietors giving
to Hindu belief. The primary health care is usually consummate only by tireless
meditation over many lifetimes. Siddha system of medicine is as oldest as
mankind and dominated the civilization. There are some people who claim that
Ayurvrda is the oldest medical system, but from the research done with the help
of available historical data ti is evident that siddha Medicine is much oldest.
Purpose: To enhance the innovation of siddha graduates contribution for
frequency of using their role in protection, effectiveness, excellence service and
traditional use of primary health care to the civilizations. Occasionally situation
arises when the diseases cannot be cured in the modern era. Siddha medical
system is not gaining appropriate reputation because of some hurdles are
established. The immediate requirement is to ensure the adaptable course
regarding the quality and important practice of this degree.
Design: It has to identify the nature doctors’ clinical system to provide affective
primary health care service. The research consist Mixed method was used. The
sample consists 75 graduates. Primary data was collected through distributed
questionnaires and secondary data were collected Magazines, reports and etc. to
determine the contribution of primary health care activities of siddha graduates.
Findings and Recommendations: This study highlighted the siddha medicine
primary healthcare man power request which takes to be seriously spoken while
the respondents have influenced that may be siddha prime health-care smarter it
is significant to demand to the prime health care practice. The present structure
need be produced to accelerative by the explosive of Tamil to other part of the
world. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended that it is an
essential service for inspiration of siddha medical graduates to deliver their
service in countryside their attraction, retaining and certification of human
resource executive approaches to answer suitable technical hitches.
Practical implication: The state sector interest more number of health experts
just before to the siddha primary health care service. The information of siddha
technology influences siddha Graduate behaviors to establish a Nurture Doctors clinical system. The key tendency is recognized in health authorities to pursuer

Evaluation of mung bean (Vigna Radiate L.) germplasm for mung bean yellow mosaic virus disease
Mung bean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) is one of
the most important diseases affecting mung beans,
transmitted by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).
MYMV poses a significant threat to mung bean
production, emphasizing the need to identify
resistant genotypes for the development of
effective disease control strategies. In this study,
we screened 60 mung bean germplasm under field
conditions during the Yala season of 2022 to
identify stable MYMV-resistant lines. Infector
rows were planted alongside the test entries, and
disease incidence and severity were observed
under natural conditions. The genotypes studied
were categorized as highly resistant to highly
susceptible, with none of the test entries
appearing to be highly resistant. We identified
MIMB 909, MIMB 913, MIMB 916, MIMB 918,
MI 7, MIMB 907, MIMB 908, MIMB 911, MIMB
912, MIMB 914, MIMB 923, MIMB 926, MIMB
933, MIMB 937, MIMB 938, MIMB 941, MIMB
945, MIMB 982, and MIMB 983 as resistant and
moderately resistant genotypes, respectively.
These genotypes could serve as parental lines in a
mung bean breeding program focused on
developing more MYMV-resistant varieties.
Further studies are needed to evaluate the
stability of resistance in these genotypes across
multiple growing seasons and locations. The
research contributes Valuable insight into the
dynamics of MYMV infection in mung bean
providing a foundation for developing diseaseresistant varieties and sustainable crop
management strategies. Consequently, in the near
future, the improved varieties may surfeit the
sustainable agriculture production in the biotic
stress prone areas
Role of women entrepreneurs in establishing a “sustainable development in Sri Lanka
Given its potential to spur economic growth, advance gender equality, inspire
innovation, have a positive social impact, and support diversity and
inclusivity, women's entrepreneurship is an important field of research and
practice. Women entrepreneurs contribute significantly to the growth of the
economy by generating money, boosting productivity, and creating new jobs.
Women's entrepreneurship therefore can empower individuals, improve rura!
women, and address other societal issues. To achieve sustainablc
development, women entrepreneurs can be well-positioned to play a
significant role in promoting sustainable practices in the economy, social
system, and ecosystem. In this study, it is examined how social, economic, and
environmental practices are modified in business operations to influence the
role of female entrepreneurs in sustainable development. Two hundred and
fifty women entrepreneurs were chosen as the sample for this study, which is
followed by a descriptive research study. Investigation of study variables was
extended, using interviews also as a research instrument. The researcher's
conclusion for the study by noting that women's entrepreneurship has a strong
impact on the economy and development and how it can help developing
countries advance sustainable business practices. Presently women are
participating in entrepreneurship on a larger scale than in the past. They better
educated and are knowledgeable about the subject. In an effort towards
sustainable development, they currently facing a new set of obstacles. These
businesses are economically sound, environmentally friendly, and socially
responsible, which helps them in achieving their objectives. These companies
emphasize doing business with the underprivileged, assisting the community
to develop of skills and abilities, paying fair prices and receiving fair
payments, supporting fair treatment of all employees, and promoting
environmentally responsible business practices
The impact of food safety knowledge and attitude of food handlers on street food quality: the mediating impact of food safety practice
Street food is a growing segment of gastronomic
tourism. The quality of street food continues to the
stage in society as a source of foodborne diseases.
Therefore, this study examined the quality level of
street foods in Sri Lanka and how street food
handler’s knowledge and attitude of food safety
effects on food quality when food safety practices
play the mediating role. Data were collected using
a structured questionnaire from 200 street food
handlers from the Colombo district of Sri Lanka
using convenience sampling technique and
analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and
structural equation modeling. Research findings
revealed that the current level of street food
quality in Sri Lanka is at a satisfactory level and
the knowledge, attitude and practices on food
safety of street food handlers also proven to be
positive. Moreover, food safety knowledge,
attitude and practices positively impacted on
street food quality and food safety practices
mediate the association. Therefore, the values of
Sri Lankan street foods should be promoted in
order to avoid criticism of street foods. Training
and development programs should be
implemented by responsible parties while
strengthening the rules and regulations related to
food quality to improve the status of street foods
as there is still room for improvements. The
results of this study will be useful to public health
professionals, government agencies, destination
promoters, food tourism promoters, future
researchers and all other parties interested in
street food
Threshold enabled measure to measure travel time reliability between bus stops
The primary objective of this study is to establish a method for measuring bus travel
time reliability maintaining threshold levels at both the origin and destination points.
The threshold level was defined to be equal to half of the scheduled headway. Then the
concept of perceived waiting time was introduced. Perceived waiting time was derived
by subtracting half of the scheduled headway from the actual headway. Departure
activities were subsequently categorized into three distinct types: Early Departure (ED)
when the perceived waiting time was less than half of the scheduled headway, On-Time
Departure (OD) when the perceived waiting time equalled half of the scheduled
headway, and Late Departure (LD) when perceived waiting time exceeded half of the
scheduled headway. Similarly, arrival activities were classified into Early Arrival (EA),
On-Time Arrival (OA), and Late Arrival (LA), employing the same criteria. Then
crosstabulation analysis was employed to explore the association between departure and
arrival activity levels relative to day type (weekdays and weekends) and time of day.
Timekeeper records on scheduled departure time, actual departure time from the origin
bus stop, scheduled arrival time and the actual arrival time at the destination bus stop
were collected for around 1200 bus trips. Chi-square test was employed to test the
association between the departure and the arrival activities. In application to a suburban
feeder bus route of 255 between Mount Lavinia to Kottawa, out of the many, a notable
finding was that during peak hours on weekdays, buses arrived at their destination late
despite early departures. This observation challenged conventional assumptions about
bus travel time reliability, underscoring the necessity for a nuanced assessment that
accounted for both ends of the journey. Recommendations can be amended to consider
the scheduling, timekeeping at the noted delay points and operation control actions to
provide reliable travel for the users
