    Final Thesis Curriculum in Veterinary MedicineAs the level of quality in veterinary healthcare is improving, the life expectancy of domestic animals is extending. This has led to a higher incidence of chronic conditions, many of them associated with pain and ultimately affecting the overall quality of life and welfare. Cats are known to hide their pain very efficiently and comprehending their subtle body language can be challenging and chronic pain can go unnoticed by the owners as well as veterinarians. Various tools for pain assessment have been developed for veterinary use. To be able to use these tools, veterinarians should understand the importance of the owner's input when assessing chronic pain in cats. This retrospective case series study illustrates the most prevalent sources of chronic pain, including degenerative joint disease, cancer-related pain, oral pain, and neuropathic pain. The study describes how to approach chronic pain assessment and management. Scottish folds are one breed, where chronic pain can be seen at a very young age. Medical records of Scottish fold cats between September 2022 and March 2024 were reviewed. This study presents six cases of Scottish fold cats diagnosed with Scottish fold osteochondrodysplasia (SFOCD), describing the most prevalent clinical signs, age of onset, veterinarians’ approach to treatment, and possibilities of using the feline quality of life questionnaire (FQoL) in these patients. Chronic pain assessment should be implemented in the clinical examination on each visit, even at a very young age. The youngest cats with signs of chronic pain were four months old. Owners' input in chronic pain assessment is critical and questionnaires, such as FQoL can be beneficial in pain assessment.Kuna veterinaarmeditsiini kvaliteedi tase paraneb, pikeneb ka koduloomade eluiga. See on viinud krooniliste haiguste esinemissageduse suurenemiseni, millest paljud on seotud valuga ja lõpuks mõjutavad loomade üldist elukvaliteeti ja heaolu. On teada, et kassid varjavad oma valu väga tõhusalt ja nende kehakeele mõistmine võib olla keeruline ning krooniline valu võib jääda omanikele ja ka loomaarstidele märkamatuks. Veterinaarias kasutamiseks on välja töötatud erinevad vahendid valu hindamiseks. Nende tööriistade kasutamiseks peaksid loomaarstid mõistma omaniku panuse tähtsust kasside kroonilise valu hindamisel. See retrospektiivne juhtumite analüüs illustreerib kroonilise valu kõige levinumaid allikaid, sealhulgas degeneratiivseid liigesehaigusi, vähiga seotud valu, suuvalu ja neuropaatilist valu. Šoti lontkõrvalised on tõug, kus kroonilist valu võib näha juba väga noorelt.     Seasonal sequestration capacity of chernozem under different agrotechnological impacts in agrocenosis

To assess the sequestration capacity of C-CO2 humus in soil formation and fertility of typical chornozem (black soil), to identify the causes, rates, existing limits of the sequestration capacity decrease, it is important to study the seasonal dynamics of qualitative and quantitative indicators of humus state in time depending on the method of tillage and fertilization in agrocenoses of short rotation crop rotations in the central part of the Forest-Steppe region of Ukraine. During the research, a stationary field experiment was conducted to study the influence of methods of soil cultivation and fertilizer application on the sequestering capacity of chornozem. Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the content of humus and to calculate the seasonal reserves of absorbed carbon and phosphorus and to model the absorption capacity of chernozem. When processing with chisel plows and applying fertilizers, the increase in the C-CO2 reserve during the April-July period was +21 t ha-1 (0–0.2 m) and +36 t ha-1 a (0–0.3 m). Under moldboard plowing, the growth tended to increase by 1.52 times (0–0.2 m) and 1.25 times (0–0.3 m), but occurred at a lower quantitative level, and in the period July-September, the change in the humus C-CO2 stock was insignificant, indicating the predominance of C-CO2 sequestration processes in the summerautumn period with chisel plowing. With chisel plowing, the reserve of labile organic substances (LOS) in April exceeded the stock for plowing in the thickness of 0–0.3 m by 4.34–7.67 times (without fertilizers), 1.5–2.76 times (with fertilizers); in July - by 4.59–8.90 times (without fertilizers) and 1.32–3.16 times (with fertilizers); in September - by 4.52–4.04 times (without fertilizers) and by 1.11–1.93 times (with fertilizers), and the C-CO2 stock of the LOS compared to fallow land under chisel plowing without fertilizers in April, July, and September was 1.59–1.78 times, 2.31–3.29 times, and 1.4–1.78 times higher, and under fertilization - by 1.99–2.0, 1.86–4.50, and 1.7–2.6 times, respectively, depending on the seasons. Under fallow land maintenance, the seasonal dynamics of the C-CO2 stock of the LOS is subject to the seasonal dynamics of Porg(LOS). A direct strong correlation was found at the level of R = +0.89 ± 0.02; R2 = 79. In the period April-July, the decrease of Porg(LOS) stock in the thickness of 0–0.2 m was found to be 1.15 times, and in the thickness of 0–0.3 m - 1.1 times. From summer to autumn, the stock of Porg(LOS) was restored, and the stock in the thickness of 0–0.3 m increased by 1.10 times. Conclusions. Trends in C-CO2 stocks of humus and LOS indicate that in the series plowingchiseling-fallow land, the cyclicality index under chisel plowing was closer to the value of the seasonal cyclicality of fallow land than the seasonal cyclicality under plowing, which indicates the restoration of the CI. Trends in C-CO2 stocks of humus and LOS indicate that in the series plowing-chiseling-fallow, the index of cyclicality under chisel plowing was closer to the value of the seasonal cyclicality of fallow land than the seasonal cyclicality of plowing, which indicates the restoration of the ISC. However, the timing of changes in the Porg(LOS) stock indicates that in the series plowing-chiseling-fallow, chisel plowing is directed to fallow land by its seasonal cyclicality. The general regularity of seasonal cyclicality for all parameters of humus condition lies in the fact that a decrease in the values of ISC, as in fallow land or under moldboardless tillage, indicates the ordering of ISC, and an increase in the index of cyclicality to destruction, as under plowing

    Magistritöö Metsatööstuse õppekavalPuidu bioloogiline vastupidavus ja mahupüsivus paranevad termilisel töötlusel, kui töötlusparameetrid on piisavalt intensiivsed. Tarbijad on sunnitud lähtuma tootmisettevõtete kvaliteediklassidest, sest puuduvad sõltumatud kvaliteedikontrolli meetodid. Käesoleva magistritöö eesmärk oli uurida termilise töötluse intensiivsuse tuvastamise potentsiaali, keemiliste elementide sisalduse põhjal. Töö läbiviimiseks kasutati varasemalt töödeldud halli ja musta lepa proovikehasid. Proovidega teostati keemiliste elementide (NCHS) ning tuha- ja energiasisalduse analüüsid. Töös leiti, et süsiniku sisaldus suureneb töötluse intensiivsusega. Hapniku sisaldus, hapniku-süsiniku (O/C) ja vesiniku-süsiniku (H/C) moolide suhted vähenesid. Vesiniku ja väävli sisalduste väärtused varieerusid, kuid esines negatiivne trend. Lämmastiku sisaldus ei muutunud statistiliselt olulisel määral. Kvaliteedi indikaatornäitajateks sobisid kõige paremini süsinik, hapnik ja O/C suhe. Puidu termilise töötluse intensiivsuse uurimisel saadakse usaldusväärsed tulemused juhul, kui teada on uuritava proovi(keha) puuliik, keemiliste elementide sisaldus enne töötlemist ja töötlusmeetod. Mainitud teguritel on märkimisväärne mõju elementide sisalduse muutustele, termilisel töötlusel. Töötlus suurendas ainult halli lepa tuhasisaldust, kuid energiasisaldus tõusis töötlusintensiivsusega mõlema lepa puhul, mistõttu võib olla tegemist potentsiaalse indikaatornäitajaga. Tulevikus võiks uurida erinevaid puidu omaduste väärtuseid kombineerituna keemiliste elementide sisaldusega, et leida uusi väärtusi, mis ei varieeru liigisiseselt ja sobivad indikaatornäitajateks.The biological durability and dimensional stability of wood improve with thermal treatment if the treatment parameters are sufficiently intense. Consumers must rely on the quality classifications of the producer, due to the absence of independent quality control methods. This master's thesis aimed to investigate the potential of detecting thermal treatment intensity based on the content of chemical elements. Previously treated samples of grey and black alder were used for the study. The samples underwent chemical element (NCHS), ash content, and heating value analyses. The study found that the carbon content increased with the intensity of the treatment. The oxygen content, oxygen-carbon (O/C) ratio, and hydrogen-carbon (H/C) ratio decreased. The values of hydrogen and sulfur contents varied, although showing a negative trend, while the nitrogen content did not change significantly. The results indicated that carbon, oxygen, and the O/C ratio were the best quality indicators. Reliable results in studying the intensity of wood thermal treatment, can only be obtained if the wood species, the chemical element content prior to treatment, and the treatment method are known. These factors significantly influence the changes in chemical element content during thermal treatment. Thermal treatment increased the ash content only in grey alder, but the energy content increased with treatment intensity in both alder species, suggesting it could be a potential indicator. Future research could explore various wood properties combined with chemical element content to identify new values, consistent within a species, as suitable quality indicators

    Magistritöö Ökonoomika ja ettevõtluse õppekavalMajandus on oma olemuselt pidevalt muutuv, keerukas ning abstraktne süsteem, mille mõistmiseks ei ole olemas ühte kindlat meetodit või alust. Majandus vajab kasvamiseks sisendit, mille defineerimine ja leidmine ei ole lihtne ning majandust edasiviiva jõu leidmiseks tuleb läbi viia erinevaid uuringuid, mis aitavad kujundada tulevast majanduskasvu. Magistritöö eesmärk on uurida tööjõu haridustasemete mõju majanduskasvule Eestis aastatel 2000-2022. Magistritöö põhineb kvantitatiivsel meetodil, kus kasutatakse teiseseid andmeid Statistikaametist. Töö eesmärgi saavutamiseks anti esmalt teoreetiline ülevaade majanduskasvu olemusest ning seda mõjutavatest teguritest. Seejärel valiti välja majanduskasvu mõjutavad tegurid tuginedes kirjandusele ning viidi läbi kirjeldav analüüs koos korrelatsioon- ja regressioonanalüüsiga. Lisaks toodi analüüsi põhjal välja erinevad tulemused ja järeldused. Analüüsi põhjal selgus, et esimese või madalama haridustasemega tööjõud omab negatiivset mõju majanduskasvule, kolmanda taseme haridusega tööjõud ja elukestvas õppes osalenute inimeste arv omab positiivset mõjub majanduskasvule. Teise taseme haridusega tööjõud ei ole omanud märkimisväärset mõju majanduskasvule. Pikaajalise majanduskasuv toetamiseks tuleks jätkata panustamist haridus- ja teadustegevusse, lisaks toetada inimeste osalemist elukestvas õppes.The economy is constantly changing, complex and abstract system with no single method or theory to understand it. Economics requires inputs for growth that are not straightforward by the definition, so finding the driving force behind economic progress requires conducting various studies to drive future economic growth. The aim of the master's thesis was to examine the impact of the education level of the workforce on economic growth in Estonia from 2000 to 2022. The thesis relied on a quantitative method, using secondary data from the Statistics Estonia. To achieve the objective of the study, a theoretical overview of the nature of economic growth and its influencing factors was first provided. Then, factors affecting economic growth were selected based on the literature, descriptive analysis along with correlation and regression analysis was conducted. Additionally, various results and conclusions were highlighted based on the analysis. The analysis revealed that the workforce with lower or primary education has a negative impact on economic growth, while those with tertiary education and participation in lifelong learning have a positive impact on economic growth. The workforce with secondary education has not had a significant impact on economic growth. To support long-term economic growth, investment in education and research should continue and people should be encouraged to participate more in lifelong learning

    The impact of Tallinn's and Ljubljana's waste regulations and arrangements on their separate collection of waste

    Magistritöö Keskkonnakorralduse ja -poliitika õppekavalMagistritöö eesmärgiks on välja selgitada jäätmete liigiti kogumist soodustavad tegurid Tallinna ja Ljubljana jäätmepoliitika võrdluses. Olmejäätmete kogumine on omavalitsuste ülesanne, mistõttu nende jäätmekäitluse edukusest oleneb, kas Eesti suudab oma kohustused täita. Seetõttu on oluline aru saada, kuidas tõhustada omavalitsuste jäätmete liigiti kogumise võimekust, et jäätmeid oleks võimalik rohkem ringlusse võtta. Magistritöös on võrreldud Tallinna ja Ljubljana ning laiemalt Eesti ja Sloveenia jäätmealaseid regulatsioone ja korraldusi. Dokumendianalüüsi meetodit kasutades keskendutakse regulatsioonide analüüsimisel liigiti kogumisega seotud märksõnadele, aga ka teoreetilisest osast välja tulnud liigiti kogumist soodustavate meetmete olemasolule või puudumisele. Dokumentide analüüsil selgus, et Ljubljanas on korraldatud jäätmeveoga hõlmatud rohkem jäätmeliike (sh pakendijäätmed) kui Tallinnas. Lisaks on Tallinna jäätmekäitluse korraldamisega seotud palju osapooli, mis teeb muudatuste sisseviimise ja teenuse arendamise keerulisemaks. Samuti on vastutus ja kontroll jäätmete liigiti kogumise eest Tallinnas jagatud mitmete asutuste vahel ja rikkumiste eest ei ole ette nähtud konkreetseid trahve. Ljubljanas seevastu vastutab jäätmekäitluse eest kohalikule omavalitsusele kuuluv asutus ning järelvalvet teostab linnavalitsuse järelevalveosakond. Kogusepõhine hinnastamine Tallinnas on küll kasutusel, aga segaolmejäätmete madal veohind ja tihe tühjendussagedus ei motiveeri liigiti koguma.The aim of this master's thesis is to find out what are the success factors of separate collection of waste in a comparison of Tallinn’s and Ljubljana's waste policies. Municipal waste collection is the task of local governments, so whether Estonia can fulfill its obligations depends on the success of municipalities waste management. Therefore, it is important to understand how municipalities should organize their waste management in order to collect more waste separately and thus to be able to recycle them in larger amounts. The master's thesis compares the waste regulations and arrangements of Tallinn and Ljubljana and, more broadly, Estonia and Slovenia. Using the method of document analysis, the focus is on keywords like separate collection, biowaste, packaging, glass, as well as frequency and type of collection, pay-as-you-throw scheme etc. The analysis revealed that Ljubljana has managed to integrate the collection of packaging waste smoother to its municipal waste collection service, which means that door-to-door collection is used for more waste types and service users have less barriers to come to the service. In addition, there are more parties involved in the waste management of Tallinn, which makes it more difficult to introduce changes and develop separate waste collection. Also, the responsibility and control for the separate waste collection is divided between several agencies, and there are no fines for violations, therefore the control is weak. Fourthly, pay-as-you-throw scheme pricing is in use in Tallinn, but the low cost of mixt municipal waste waste collection and the high emptying frequency do not motivate separate collection

    Influence of budding height and method on bi-axis young apple trees (cv. ‘Florina’)

Budding with chip was made at the period of late July and early August at a height of 10 and 20 cm (the control). The formation of two axes was made with the help of budding in two ways: budding with one bud with pinching of a shoot at a height of 10 cm (the control); budding with one bud with pinching of a shoot at a height of 20 cm, budding with two buds that are opposite set, and budding with two buds that are alternate set and have a shift on a rootstock axis up to 5 cm due to each other. The maximum trunk diameter was observed in young bi-axis apple trees that have alternate and opposite ways of budding with the help of two buds at a height of 10 cm above ground level. The reduction of the budding height up to 10 cm above ground level did not affect the height of the young bi-axis apple trees, though it had a significant effect on axis elongation. It was defined that one-dimensional formation of both axes occurred with the even distribution of length and number of branches on each were observed on young apple trees that had opposite budding with two buds at the above ground level height of 10 cm. The largest number of differentiated generative buds was observed on young trees that had opposite budding with two buds at the above ground level height of 10 and 20 cm

    Ergonomics evaluation methodology of gloves for rescue workers

    Magistritöö Ergonoomika õppekavalPäästetöötajad ilmutavad rahulolematust oma kaitsekinnaste mugavuse ja ergnoomilisuse osas. Standardis EVS-EN 469:2020 ei käsitleta päästetöötajate kinnaste ergonoomilisuse aspekti. Samas mitmetes uuringutes ilmutavad päästetöötajad rahulolematust kinnaste mugavusega. Töö eesmärk on selgitada välja käelise osavuse test või testid, mis sobivad ajakasutuse ja eristusvõime poolest kõige paremini päästetöötaja kinnaste testimiseks. Kirjandusest leitud 14 testi seast valiti välja seitse omanäolist testi ning koostati testipatarei. Valitud testideks osutusid „Don/doff test“, „EN 420 test“, „9-hole pegboard test“, „Minnesota manual dexterity test“, „Grooved pegboard test“ ning „Bennett hand-tool dexterity test“. Testipatareis olevate katsete sooritamiseks kasutati hetkel Eesti päästetöötajatel kasutuses olevaid tulekustutuskindaid. Teste sooritati kinnasteta, kuivade kinnastega ja märgade kinnastega. Kokku sooritasid katseid 10 meesterahvast vaatlusalust, kellest kaks olid päästetöötajad. Tulemustest oli näha, et kuivade ja märgade kinnastega sooritatud katsete tulemuste erinevus ei olnud statistiliselt oluline, seetõttu pole tulevikus käelise osavuse mõõtmine märgade kinnastega vajalik. Statistiliselt oluline erinevus kuiva ja märja kinda tulemustes ilmnes ainult käte kinnastamise kiiruses („Don/doff test“). Magistritöö tulemusena koostati uus testipatarei, mis koosneb kuuest testist: millega mõõdetakse käte kinnastamise kiirust (üks test), käelise osavuse kadu (neli testi) ja töövahendite käest libisemise ohtu tõmbejõu mõõtmisega.Rescue workers show dissatisfaction with the comfort and ergonomics of their protective gloves. The standard EVS-EN 469:2020 does not address the ergonomic aspects of rescue workers' gloves. However, several studies show that rescue workers are dissatisfied with the comfort of their gloves. The aim of this study is to identify the manual dexterity test or tests that are most suitable in terms of time efficiency and discriminative ability for testing rescue workers' gloves. From the 14 tests found in the literature, seven distinctive tests were selected to form a test battery. The selected tests were the "Don/doff test," "EN 420 test," "9-hole pegboard test," "Minnesota manual dexterity test," "Grooved pegboard test," and "Bennett hand-tool dexterity test." The current firefighting gloves used by Estonian rescue workers were used to perform the test battery. The tests were performed without gloves, with dry gloves, and with wet gloves. A total of 10 male subjects, two of whom were rescue workers, completed the test batteries. The results showed that the differences in performance between dry and wet gloves were not statistically significant, indicating that future manual dexterity measurements do not need to be conducted with wet gloves. A statistically significant difference in the performance with dry and wet gloves was observed only in the "Don/doff test." As a result of this master's thesis, a new test battery was developed, consisting of six tests: measuring the speed of donning and doffing gloves (one test), measuring the decline in manual dexterity (four tests) and assessing the risk of tools slipping from the hands by measuring pulling force

    Fusarium head blight in winter wheat: development peculiarities and protective strategies

    Received: February 24th, 2024 ; Accepted: April 25th, 2024 ; Published: May 2nd, 2024 ; Correspondence: [email protected] head blight (FHB, caused by the fungal plant pathogen Fusarium graminearum Schwabe) is a widespread fungal disease in the Republic of Armenia, affecting various cereal crops, including wheat, leading to a decrease in productivity and grain quality. However, comprehensive research aimed at selecting proper fungicides and determining the optimal application timing has not been conducted before. FHB can undergo epidemic development during years characterized by favorable weather conditions. Conversely, during periods of adverse weather conditions, the severity and incidence of FHB tend to decrease notably. Abundant rainfall and mild temperatures render plants more susceptible, facilitating the spread of infection not only during the flowering of winter wheat but also at the waxy ripening stage, thereby increasing the risk of an FHB epidemic. The experiments were carried out during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons under rain-fed conditions, with the primary focus on treating winter wheat with triazole group fungicides. During years with adverse weather conditions for FHB development, a single application of Falcon (0.5 L ha-1 ) or Prosaro (1.0 L ha-1 ) at Feekes 10.5.1 proved to be an effective strategy for managing FHB, particularly when integrated with cultural practices. These treatments provided a biological efficacy of 80.6% to 83.3% at Feeks 11.2, and from 76.6% to 79.4% at harvest, respectively, increasing wheat yield by 37.62% to 42.9%. In the case of epidemic development of FHB during years with more favorable weather conditions, a double fungicide treatment (Falcon or at Feekes 10.3 and Prosaro at Feekes 10.5.1) was the most effective option, showing high biological efficacy (97.4% at Feeks 11.2 and 90.3% at harvest) against FHB of winter wheat, increasing wheat yield by 40.1%

    Magistritöö Metsamajanduse ja metsaökoloogia õppekavalKäesolev magistritöö uurib Hariliku saare (Fraxinus excelsior) järglaskatseala tulemusi 5 aastat peale selle rajamist, Hymenoscyphus fraxineus-e esinemist saare leherootsudel ja selle patogeeni esinemise dünaamikat eri aastatel. Uuriti haigetelt ja tervetelt puudelt korjatud seemnest kasvavate järglaste kõrguskasvu ja suremust, kus ei leitud puude kõrguses ega suremuses statistiliselt olulisi erinevusi(P>0,05). Selles saab järeldada, et praeguses puude arengufaasis ei ole vahet, kas seeme on varutud haigetelt või tervetelt saare puudelt. Olulise tulemusena selgus, et keskmiselt kõrgeima kasvuga järglased on IV7T (46cm), T6T (36,8cm), L10T (36,7cm), IV1H (36,1cm), S5H(36cm) ning nende järglaste suremus oli keskmisest madalam. 2017. ja 2022. a perioodi jooksul olid suurima kõrguse juurdekasvuga: IV7T (32,4cm), S5H (25,8cm), T6T (25,1cm), L9T (24,9cm), L3H (23,5cm). Käesoleva töö tulemusena saaks parima kasvu ja tervisega järglasi tulevikus kasutada metsas ja haljastuses hukkunud saarepuude asendamiseks. Saaresurma tekitaja H. fraxineus-e dünaamika näitab seda, et patogeeni esines 73,9% viljakehadega leherootsudes ja viljakehata leherootsudes oli see osakaal statistiliselt oluliselt väiksem 49,4% kõigist tuvastatud seentest nendes rootsudes. Seega, maapinnal esinevad ja mustaks värvunud viljakehaga leherootsudes on H. fraxineus-st oluliselt enam võrreldes pruuni värvi leherootsudega. Võrreldi erinevatel aastatel kahelt alalt korjatud leherootsude H. fraxineus-e esinemise dünaamikat, kus statistiliselt olulist erinevust perioodil 2011-2016 ei esinenud. Seega, aasta erisused saaresurma esinemist rootsudel ei mõjutanud.This master’s thesis examines the results of the progeny test area of the Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) 5 years after its establishment and the occurrence of Hymenoscyphus fraxineus on ash leaf petioles and the dynamics of this pathogen between different years. The height growth and mortality of offspring growing from seeds collected from symptomatic and healthy trees were studied. There was no statistical significance in terms of trees mortality and height growth (P>0.05). From this, it can be concluded that at the current stage of the test area, there has been no difference whether the seed has been harvested from symptomatic or healthy trees. An important result to highlight is that the highest growing offspring were IV7T (46cm), T6T (36.8cm), L10T (36.7cm), IV1H (36.1cm), S5H (36cm). It should also be mentioned that the mortality of the aforementioned offspring was lower than average. The offspring with the largest height growth during the period between 2017. and 2022. were also compared: IV7T (32.4cm), S5H (25.8cm), T6T (25.1cm), L9T (24.9cm), L3H (23.5cm) being fastest growing. H. fraxineus was more prominent in black coloured petioles (73.9%) compared to brown ones (49,4%). This difference in proportions was also statistically significant and it can be stated that there is significantly more H. fraxineus in necrotic petioles. The dynamics of the occurrence of H. fraxineus in petioles collected from two areas together in different years were compared, there was no statistically significant difference between years 2011-2016. Hence, sampling year has low impact on the occurrence of ash dieback
