    Investigation of the relationship of the maxillary sinus floor with maxillary posterior teeth using cone beam CT

    Background: Any intervention to the maxillary posterior teeth (MPT) and alveola pose a risk of sinus perforation. Given the proximity of these structures, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the maxillary sinus (MS) and MPT. Materials and methods: CBCT images obtained from 207 patients (mean age, 45 ± 17 years; age range: 18–92 years) including 99 females and 108 males were examined retrospectively. Patients with sinus pathologies affecting the structure of MS and a history of oral and maxillofacial surgery were excluded from the study. On these images, the relationship of maxillary sinus floor (MSF) with 2 premolars and 3 molars was examined bilaterally for each patient using Kwak H. H. et al.’s classification. The presence, number, frequency and location of septa within the MSF were investigated. Results: Examination of a total of 410 maxillary sinuses on the images of 207 patients with no sinus perforation or pathology revealed that septa were most commonly (48.7%) located in the middle segment (second molars). When the relationship between the MSF and MPT was evaluated, molar teeth were found to have a closer relationship with the MSF than premolars. 1 Conclusions: It is believed that the findings of this study may provide further guidance to the dental practitioners and other clinicians for future studies

    The investigation of public interest to mineral water: A google trends study

    The global bottled mineral water market tends to grow thanks to rising awareness of health and well-being. This industry is classified as manufac tured mineral water and natural mineral water. Although Türkiye is among the countries rich in natural mineral waters, Asia-Pacific regions are primar ily known in the natural mineral water market (1). Increasing the market volume and providing consumption motivation depends on understanding the public’s interest. This study aims to understand global and local public interest’ in mineral water via the Google Trends (GT) tool. GT provides daily, monthly, and yearly relative search volumes (RSV) of search queries in differ ent countries and languages (2). This study selected the “shopping” catego ry, and searches were conducted in Türkiye and worldwide. Keywords were searched in Turkish and English, and the search spectrum was “1 October 2014-1 October 2024” to determine monthly search queries. Search queries were classified into three parts: mineral water, different types of non-alcohol ic beverages, including mineral water, and different terms of mineral water. Lastly, RSV values for search queries from 2014-2019 and 2019-2024 were also compared. Statistical analyses were completed with Jamovi software (version 2.6.2). Mineral waters’ mean RSV in Türkiye are consistent with seasonal temperatures. Globally, the mean RSV of mineral waters has been higher than those of soft drinks, sports drinks, and fruit and vegetable juices. In the Türkiye, soft drinks have higher mean RSV than mineral waters. The mean RSV in mineral waters has significantly increased in 2019-2024 compared to 2014-2019, both local and global (p<0.05). It could be related to changed health perceptions with the pandemic. Understanding search queries about mineral water will contribute to consumer health and raise awareness and market volume.     Do corruption and inequality shape sustainable development? Evidence from the post-soviet countries

    Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the role of corruption and income inequality in three-dimensional sustainable development in the post-Soviet countries. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology is based on dynamic panel regression with the fixed effects approach. Findings – The authors’ findings depict that increasing corruption and income inequality undermine sustainable development. Specifically, increasing corruption and income inequality negatively affect sustainable development. Moreover, unemployment and trade liberalization negatively impact sustainable development, whereas foreign direct investments (FDIs) positively affect sustainable development. Practical implications – Policy implications enclose galvanizing strong institutions and redistributive policy mechanisms that the bottom income groups enjoy in promoting sustainable development to keep away the distressful phase of corruption and income inequality. Originality/value – This is the first paper on corruption, income inequality and sustainable development in the post-Soviet countries employing a sustainable development index (SDI), which is calculated by considering three factors including economic, social and environmental development

    Morphometric evaluation of the left atrioventricular valve complex and its clinical relations

    Background: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate morphometrically and morphologically the left fibrous ring, mitral leaflets, tendinous cords, and papillary muscles, which are the components of the left atrioventricular valve complex (LAVC), and to reveal their clinical relationships. Materials and methods: A total of 120 human hearts were examined at the Forensic Medicine Institute. Cases aged 30 years and older, less than 24 hours after their death, were included in the study. Heart length, width, height/width ratio, anteroposterior and mediolateral diameters of the annulus, annular area, length and width of leaflets, number and attachment sites of tendinous cords, number, shape, length, the width of papillary muscles, and distances to various points were recorded to determine their spatial configurations. As well as the measurement data of LAVC components in cases with and without cardiovascular disease (CVD), the relationships of these data with the demographic characteristics of the cases are also explained. Results: In the diagnostic performance test (ROC analysis), it was determined that body mass index (> 26.7), heart weight (> 414 g), heart height/width ratio (≤ 1.24), mitral valve width (> 99.96 mm), left ventricular wall thickness (> 15.08 mm), annular area (> 619.37 mm²) and mediolateral diameter of the annulus (> 30.71 mm) are important diagnostic criteria in determining CVD if they are outside the specified reference values. Conclusions: This study provides anatomical information about LAVC, as well as recommendations for diagnosis and surgical treatment planning. We therefore believe that our findings will be useful to clinicians

    Comparison of the effects of four laser wavelengths on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) in a murine model: An in vivo photobiomodulation study

    Background: This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of lasers at various wavelengths in treating medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) using biochemical, clinical scoring, micro CT analysis, and histopathological methods. The study follows the ARRIVE guidelines to ensure robust and transparent research. Methods: In our study, there were 6 groups, including one SHAM group, one CONTROL group, and four experimental groups, with 8 rats in each individual group. Each rat received antiresorptive drug intraperitoneally for 4 weeks and then had the left second molar in the mandible extracted. All animals were sacrificed at the end of the 12th week. In the experimental groups, lasers at wavelengths of 405nm, 445nm, 660nm, and 808nm were applied to the animals. Parameters such as serum vitamin D levels, bone density and bone volume at the extraction site, new bone formation, dead bone count, inflammatory cell count, and epithelial regeneration were examined. Additionally, clinical scoring was conducted after sacrifice. The laser parameters included power density, area, time, fluence, and mode (continuous wave), and the light was administered using a fiber with a Gaussian profile. Statistical analyses were performed with the NCSS (Number Cruncher Statistical System) 2007 Statistical Software (Utah, USA) package program. The results were evaluated at the p<0.05 significance level. Results: According to the results obtained from our study, new bone formation in all experimental groups was significantly higher than in the SHAM and CONTROL groups. Furthermore, the 660nm and 808nm wavelengths increased serum vitamin D levels significantly. The most successful outcomes were observed in clinical scoring, dead bone count, epithelial cell regeneration, and bone density in the 660nm and 808nm wavelength groups. Conclusions: The combined use of lasers at 660nm and 808nm wavelengths may yield successful results in treating MRONJ

    Multicentric screening of local antibiotic resistance in uncomplicated urinary system infections: 1850 patients from 37 centers

    Bu çalışma, Türkiye’nin yedi farklı coğrafi bölgesinde komplike olmayan üriner sistem enfeksiyonu tanısı olan hastalardan elde edilen ayaktan üriner izolatlara göre en sık izlenen patojenleri tespit etmek ve bu patojenlere karşı kullanılan antibiyotiklerin direnç oranlarının coğrafi bölgelere göre anlamlı farklılık gösterip göstermediğini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Mart 2021 ile Ağustos 2022 arasında, Türkiye genelindeki 37 farklı merkezde yapılan tetkikler sonucunda komplike olmayan üriner sistem enfeksiyonu tanısı koyulan ve pozitif idrar kültürleri olan 18 ile 65 yaş arası hastalar çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan merkezler, idrar kültürlerinin verilerinin standardizasyonunu sağlamak için mikrobiyoloji laboratuvarlarında Avrupa Antimikrobiyal Duyarlılık Test Komitesi tarafından disk difüzyon yöntemini kullanan merkezlerden seçilmiştir. Bu çalışmaya, dahil edilme kriterlerine uyan toplam 1850 hasta dahil edilmiştir. Escherichia coli izolatlarının antibiyotik direnç oranlarının dağılımının analizi, ampisilin, fosfomisin ve nitrofurantoin dirençlerinde coğrafi bölgelere göre istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı farklılıkların olduğunu saptamıştır (sırasıyla p< 0.05, p< 0.05, p< 0.05). Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi fosfomisin ve trimetoprimsülfametoksazol direncinin en yüksek olduğu bölge olarak tespit edilmiştir (sırasıyla; %27.4 ve %35.3). Bunun yanı sıra nitrofurantoin direncinin en yüksek olduğu bölge %35.7 oranıyla Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi ve siprofloksasin direncinin en yüksek olduğu bölge %51 oranıyla İç Anadolu Bölgesi olarak belirlenmiştir. Çalışma, komplike olmayan üriner sistem enfeksiyonlarının tedavisinde kullanılan antibiyotiklere direncin coğrafi bölgelere göre farklılık gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Bu kapsamlı, ulusal prospektif araştırmanın, komplike olmayan üriner sistem enfeksiyonu için ampirik tedavi planlayan klinisyenlere değerli öngörüler sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.This study was aimed to identify the most frequently observed pathogens in uncomplicated urinary tract infections from outpatient urinary isolates obtained across seven different geographical regions in Türkiye and to determine whether the antibiotic resistance rates of these pathogens differ significantly between these regions. The study included patients aged 18 to 65 years who were diagnosed with uncomplicated urinary tract infections and had positive urine cultures from March 2021 to August 2022, across 37 different centers in Türkiye. The participating centers were selected based on their use of the disk diffusion method, in line with the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines, to ensure standardization of urine culture data. A total of 1850 patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The analysis of the distribution of antibiotic resistance rates in Escherichia coli isolates revealed statistically significant differences in resistance to ampicillin, fosfomycin and nitrofurantoin across different regions (p< 0.05, p< 0.05, p< 0.05, respectively). The Southeastern Anatolia region was identified as having the highest resistance rates to fosfomycin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (27.4% and 35.3%, respectively). Additionally, the region with the highest nitrofurantoin resistance was determined as the Eastern Anatolia Region with a rate of 35.7% and the region with the highest ciprofloxacin resistance was determined as the Central Anatolia Region with a rate of 51%.Our study demonstrated that antibiotic resistance in the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections varies by geographical region. We believe this comprehensive, national prospective study will provide valuable insights for clinicians planning empirical treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections

    Radius’un foramen nutricium’u ile ilgili bir araştırma

    Objective: Arteries that provide nutrition to the long bones pass through openings called nutrient foramen (NF). The number of studies on NFs of the radius is quite scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the presence, number, direction, and ana tomical localization of NFs of the radius. Material and Method: A total of 133 dry adult human radii were investigated in this study. The presence, number, position, and direction of NFs of the radii were determined. The shortest dis tance of NF to the most proximal point of the radius (DPE), the transverse diameter of the radius at the level of the NF (TD), and the shortest distance of the NF to the most prominent point of the dorsal tubercle (DDT) were measured. Furthermore, the fo raminal index (FI) was calculated. Result: A single NF was found in 130 (97.7%) bones, and 3 (2.3%) radii did not have NF. The NFs were most commonly on the ante rior surface (80%, 104 bones) and middle 1/3 (78.5%, 102 bones) part of the bones. All NFs were towards the elbow. The DPE, TD, and DDT were meanly 82.72±11.4 mm, 129.99±15.41 mm, and 14.6±1.97 mm, respectively. The average FI was 35.6±4.64. Conclusion: This paper provides additional information, such as the distance of nutrient foramen to the dorsal tubercle. Our results may help clinicians during applications related to the NF of the radiusAmaç: Uzun kemiklerin beslenmesini sağlayan arterler, foramen nutricium (FN) adı verilen açıklıklardan geçer. Radius’taki FN'ler ile ilgili yapılan çalışma sayısı oldukça azdır. Bu nedenle, bu çalışmada FN'lerin radius üzerindeki varlığını, sayısını, yönünü ve anatomik lokalizasyonunu belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmada toplam 133 adet yetişkine ait kuru radius kemiği incelendi. FN'lerin radius üzerindeki varlığı, sayısı, konumu ve yönü belirlendi. FN’nin radius’un en proksimal noktasına olan en kısa mesafesi (PM), FN’nin bulunduğu seviyedeki transvers çap (TÇ), FN’nin tuberculum dorsale’nin en belirgin noktasına olan mesafesi (TDM) ölçüldü. Ayrıca foraminal indeks (FI) hesaplandı. Bulgular: 130 (%97,7) radius’ta tek FN vardı, 3 (%2,3) radius’ta ise FN yoktu. FN'ler en sık radius’un facies anterior’unda (%80; 104 kemik) ve orta 1/3 (%78,5; 102 kemik) kısmındaydı. Tüm FN'lerin yönü dirseğe doğruydu. PM, TÇ ve TDM sırasıyla ortalama 82,72±11,4 mm, 129,99±15,41 mm ve 14,6±1,97 mm olarak hesaplandı. Ortalama FI 35,6±4,64 olarak kaydedildi. Sonuç: Bu çalışma, nutrient foramenin dorsal tüberküle olan uzaklığı gibi ek bilgiler sağlamaktadır.     Use and effectiveness of innovative virtual reality application in teaching fetal development : A randomized controlled trial

    Virtual reality-based training is effective. It is increasingly used by multiple disciplines to develop observation and critical skills, including engineering, education, arts, and health. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the application created with Fetal Development Application Created by Virtual Reality Technology, which was developed to teach fetal development. The study was conducted in a single-blind, randomized fashion. Undergraduate midwifery students who took normal pregnancy lessons and learned fetal development were included. Eighty-four students were included in the experimental (n = 42) and control (n = 42) groups. Before the training, a personal information form and a pretest were applied to both groups. After the pretest, the experimental group received Fetal Development Application Created by Virtual Reality Technology, and the control group received 2 hours of theory training. Posttest was applied to both groups 6 weeks after the application. Preintervention scores were similar for the two groups. The posttest score of the experimental group was statistically significant compared with that of the control group (P < .05). The mean cognitive load score of the experimental group was 1.09 ± 0.29, and the application did not create a cognitive load. The innovative application of Fetal Development Application Created by Virtual Reality Technology is an effective and applicable method in teaching fetal development in midwifery education

    Immigrant entrepreneurship: Incentives, challenges and obligations

    Göçmen girişimciler, yabancı bir ülkede kendi işlerini kuran girişimcilerdir. Göçmen girişimciler, göç ettikleri ülkelerde daha evvel göç eden ve aynı kökenden gelen yerleşmiş kişilerle bireysel iletişimlerini kullanarak kendi işlerini kurmaktadırlar. Tüm dünya coğrafyasını etkileyen savaşlar, kıtlıklar, doğal afetler, iklim değişikliği, küreselleşme… gibi pek çok nedenle oluşan böylesi bir yer değiştirme faaliyeti ülke ekonomilerini derinden etkilemektedir. Göçler, ekonomik, sosyal, kültürel ve toplumsal yapılar üzerinde değiştirici ve şekillendirici etkiye sahiptir. Aynı etkiyi, göçmen girişimciler de göstermektedir. Çünkü göçmen girişimciler birçok ülkede istihdamı arttırarak ekonomik ve sosyal gelişmeye katkıda bulunmaktadırlar. Göçmen girişimciliğininekonomik, sosyal, kültürel etkileri oldukça önemlidir. Yapılan araştırmalar, verilen örnekler ve bu olguyu açıklayan kuramlar bu etkileşimi vermektedir. Göçmen girişimcilerin, geldikleri ülke ve anavatanları hakkında sahip oldukları görüşleri ve tecrübeleri ile küreselleşmeye ve uluslararası ticarete sağladıkları katkı yadsınamaz. Bununla birlikte göçmen girişimcilerin istihdamın ve refahın artmasındaki katkıları açıktır. Irksal ayrımcılık, göçmenlerin çalıştıkları kurumlarda uygun iş imkânının olmaması, eğitim ve lisan eksikliği gibi dışsal güçler göçmenleri girişimciliğe yönlendirmede etkilidir. İş bulma konusunda yaşadıkları sorunlar ve karşılaştıkları kısıtlamalar nedeniyle pek çok göçmen, böylesi bir zorunluluk ile kendi işini kurma yani girişimciliği tercih etmektedir. Sosyal, yasal, maddi ve politik kısıtlamalar ise konumuz açısından göçmen girişimcilerin karşılaştıkları zorlukları göstermektedir. Osmanlı’nın girişimci göçmenlerinden Silikon Vadisi’nin girişimci göçmenlerinin örnekleri ile girişimcilik ekosistemine katkıları üzerinden betimsel bir çalışma yapılacaktır.Migrant entrepreneurs are entrepreneurs who set up their own businesses in a foreign country. Immigrant entrepreneurs start their own businesses by using their individual communication with settlers who have migrated before and come from the same origin in the countries they migrate to. Such a relocation activity, which occurs for many reasons that affect the world geography, such as wars, famines, natural disasters, climate change, globalisation, deeply affects the economies of the country. Migrations have a transformative and shaping effect on economic, social, cultural and social structures. The same effect is shown by immigrant entrepreneurs. Because immigrant entrepreneurs contribute to economic and social development by increasing employment in many countries. The economic, social and cultural impact of immigrant entrepreneurship is very important. The researches, examples given and theories explaining this phenomenon give this interaction. The contribution of immigrant entrepreneurs to globalization and international trade with their views and experience about the country and their homeland is undeniable. However, the contribution of immigrant entrepreneurs in increasing employment and prosperity is clear. External forces such as racial discrimination, lack of appropriate employment opportunities in the institutions where migrants work, and lack of education and language are effective in directing migrants to entrepreneurship. Due to the problems they face in finding a job and the restrictions they face, many immigrants prefer to start their own business with such a necessity. Social, legal, material and political constraints show the challenges faced by immigrant entrepreneurs. A descriptive study will be carried out on the contributions of the enterprising immigrants of the Ottoman Empire to the entrepreneurial ecosystem with the examples of the entrepreneurial immigrants of Silicon Valley.Migrant entrepreneurs are entrepreneurs who set up their own businesses in a foreign country.     Açılı implant uygulama sistemlerinde implant pozisyonu, diş tasarımı ve açının marjinal kemik rezorpsiyonu üzerine etkisi

    The all-on-four system utilizes 2 parallel anterior implants and 2 distally tilted posterior implants between mental foramina on mandible, between maxillar sinuses on maxilla with an immediately loaded temporary fixed prosthesis. Purpose of this study is evaluating the effect of implant position, thread design and tilting on marginal bone resorption after tilted implant surgery similar to the all-on-four system. 17 patient recieved 92 implants with 2 different forms (level, rapid). Radiographic assessment of marginal bone level change was performed at 1 year follow-up period. The differences between marginal bone resorption for implant position, thread design and tilting degree were analyzed with the Mann Whitney U test. The value p = 0.05 was considered as the level of significance. Total marginal bone level was, on average, 0.2994mm (SD=0.80026) for mandible, 0.3992mm (SD=0.43636) for maxilla, 0.4377mm (SD=0.82100) for tilted implants, 0.2682mm (SD=0.41187) for axial implants, 0.3785mm (SD=0.70581) for level form implants, 0.2789mm (SD=0.46179) for rapid form implants. Mean bone loss was significantly higher in the tilted implants. There is no significant difference found in marginal bone loss between the maxilla-mandible and different threaded implant forms.All on four sistemi ile; mandibulada mental formenler arası bölgeye, maksillada maksiller sinüsler arası bölgeye anteriorda iki vertikal, sağ ve sol posteriorda açılı birer implant uygulamasını takiben aynı seansta sabit geçici protez uygulanır. Bu çalışmanın amacı All on four cerrahisi sonrasi implant konumu, yiv yapısı ve açılandırmanın marjinal kemik rezorpsiyonuna etkisini tespit etmektir. 17 hastaya, iki farklı formda(level, rapid), 92 adet implant uygulanmıştır. 1 yıllık takiplerinde panoramik radyografiler üzerinden marjinal kemik kayıpları karşılaştırılmıştır. İmplantların tipi, implantların konumu ve çeneler arasındaki marjinal kemik kaybı farkları Mann Whitney U testi ile analiz edilmiş, istatistik anlamlılık düzeyi 0,05 olarak kabul edilmiştir. Total kemik kaybı mandibulada ortalama 0,2994mm(SS=0,80026); maksillada ortalama 0,3992mm(SS=0,43636), açılı implantlarda ortalama 0,4377mm (SS=0,82100); aksiyal implantlarda ortalama 0,2682mm(SS=0,41187), level form implantlarda ortalama 0,3785mm(SS=0,70581); rapid form implantlarda ortalama 0,2789mm(SS=0,46179) olarak ölçülmüştür. Total marjinal kemik kayıpları yönünden açılı implantlar yönünde anlamlı fark bulunmuş; maksilla mandibula, implant yiv formları açısından değerlendirildiğinde anlamlı fark bulunamamıştır
