Status of the Belle II Pixel Detector
The Belle II experiment at the super KEK B-factory (SuperKEKB) in Tsukuba, Japan, has been collecting e+e− collision data since March 2019. Operating at a record-breaking luminosity of up to 4.7×1034 cm−2s−1, data corresponding to 424 fb−1 has since been recorded. The Belle II VerteX Detector (VXD) is central to the Belle II detector and its physics program and plays a crucial role in reconstructing precise primary and decay vertices. It consists of the outer 4-layer Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) using double sided silicon strips and the inner two-layer PiXel Detector (PXD) based on the Depleted P-channel Field Effect Transistor (DePFET) technology. The PXD DePFET structure combines signal generation and amplification within pixels with a minimum pitch of (50×55) μm2. A high gain and a high signal-to-noise ratio allow thinning the pixels to 75 μm while retaining a high pixel hit efficiency of about 99%. As a consequence, also the material budget of the full detector is kept low at ≈0.21%XX0 per layer in the acceptance region. This also includes contributions from the control, Analog-to-DigitalConverter (ADC), and data processing Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) as well as from cooling and support structures. This article will present the experience gained from four years of operating PXD; the first full scale detector employing the DePFET technology in High Energy Physics. Overall, the PXD has met the expectations. Operating in the intense SuperKEKB environment poses many challenges that will also be discussed. The current PXD system remains incomplete with only 20 out of 40 modules having been installed. A full replacement has been constructed and is currently in its final testing stage before it will be installed into Belle II during the ongoing long shutdown that will last throughout 2023
De esta coyuntura y demás proyectos en estos años de la década de los 40 hablan las valiosas cartas que muestran la amistad y colaboración que unieron indefectiblemente a Camilo José Cela y Carlos Fernando Maristany.[eng] The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to address the study and analysis of the correspondence between Camilo José Cela and Carlos Femando Maristany, the Barcelona based publisher and manager of Ediciones del Zodíaco. The time frame in which this relationship is circumscribed is situated between the years 1944 and 1949, the forging moment of a writer who seeks the possibility of having a leading publishing house t:hat gives outlet to his enormous literary production. The years that are examined in this work, in the light of the correspondence between the two, constitute a fundamental period in the life and work of the Galician author because, after having marked a turning point in the post-war narrative with the appearance of his first novel, La familia de Pascual Duarte in the year 1942, intends to continue his literary work from the refuge of having a prestigious publisher that endorses his work. Ediciones del Zodíaco is a modest publishing house that began its journey in 1940 and that has to its credit works of delicate refinement and care for the combination between substance and forro that are to the absolute liking of Camilo José Cela. In these years of relationship, the reader can attend to the knowledge of fundamental aspects in the trajectory of the Galician author, since three great milestones arise from the relationship between the two. The first of these is the publication of the first collection of poems by Camilo José Cela, Pisando la dudosa luz del día in 1945, despite containing texts composed in 1936. The second will be the reissue for the fourth time of La familia de PascuaI Duarte with the particularity of having a prologue by Dr. Gregorio Marañón; and a third, the most important, the attempt to publish La colmena. This novel that finally appeared in 1951 by the hand of Emecé in Buenos Aires has the Zodiac seal as the beginning of its journey. Carlos F. Maristany was called to be the editor who was going to publish the great novel by Camilo José Cela, when the censorship intervened to prevent this from happening as both had planned. Valuable letters that show the friendship and collaboration that unfailingy by united Camilo José Cela and Carlos Fernando Maristany speak of this situation and other projects in these years of the 40s
RNase H-sensitive multifunctional ASO-based constructs as promising tools for the treatment of multifactorial complex pathologies
Combined therapies play a key role in the fight against complex pathologies, such as cancer and related drug-resistance issues. This is particularly relevant in targeted therapies where inhibition of the drug target can be overcome by cross-activating complementary pathways. Unfortunately, the drug combinations approved to date –mostly based on small molecules– face several problems such as toxicity effects, which limit their clinical use. To address these issues, we have designed a new class of RNase H-sensitive construct (3ASO) that can be disassembled intracellularly upon cell entry, leading to the simultaneous release of three different therapeutic oligonucleotides (ONs), tackling each of them the mRNA of a different protein. Here, we used Escherichia coli RNase H1 as a model to study an unprecedented mode of recognition and cleavage, that is mainly dictated by the topology of our RNA·DNA-based hybrid construct. As a model system for our technology we have created 3ASO constructs designed to specifically inhibit the expression of HER2, Akt and Hsp27 in HER2+ breast cancer cells. These trifunctional ON tools displayed very low toxicity and good levels of antiproliferative activity in HER2+ breast cancer cells. The present study will be of great potential in the fight against complex pathologies involving multiple mRNA targets, as the proposed cleavable designs will allow the efficient single-dose administration of different ON drugs simultaneously
The expansion of wind farms in the northeastern caatinga and the environmental and socioeconomic impacts: a systematc review
The general objective of this research was to identify, select, and analyze, based on academic contributions, the possible impacts and effects caused by the construction and expansion of wind farms in the Northeast region of Brazil, specifically in the Caatinga biome, as well as possible actions and measures to address the potential environmental and socioeconomic consequences. Specifically, it sought to identify how the scientific literature addresses wind power projects in the Northeast region, with an emphasis on the Caatinga; to select publications that guide the possible consequences in terms of contributions and damages; and, finally, to verify what the authors analyze regarding possible future actions and measures for the biome. From a methodological point of view, this was an exploratory study of a mixed approach, with a bibliographic procedure. The search period established was from 2019 to 2024 on the Capes and Scielo platforms. The data collection and analysis process took place between March and June 2025. The main results found were the following: 24 publications, two in 2019 (8%), seven in 2020 (29%), four in 2021 (17%), four in 2022 (17%) and four more in 2023 (17%). In 2024, three publications were found (9%). Regarding the impacts and their effects, positive and negative points were observed. From a socioeconomic point of view, municipal revenue is only advantageous during the construction period of the wind farms; after their completion, the problems multiply. Regarding socio-environmental impacts, the damages are varied and, for the most part, negative, such as: deforestation, erosion, and fragmentation of the ecosystem. In conclusion, it is important to emphasize that, although the publications refer to the Northeast Region, they do not locate their results within the Caatinga biome, which is a contradiction, since most of the wind farms are located in this ecosystem. In conclusion, it is important to emphasize the importance of energy sources in the country, especially in the Northeast, in terms of socioeconomic expansion and development. However, more research is needed, as well as public policies and programs specifically related to the Caatinga biome, regarding its impacts and effects, particularly on socio-environmental variables.
Keywords: wind farms; northeastern Brazilian Caatinga; socioeconomic impacts; environmental impacts; systematic review.

Sea urchin holobionts: microbiome variation across species, compartments and locations in Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula
Understanding holobiont dynamics is essential for unraveling the complex interactions between marine hosts and their microbiota. Sea urchins play pivotal roles in shaping benthic ecosystems, yet the functional roles of their microbial symbionts remain poorly characterized. Here, we present a comparative microbiome analysis of two sympatric echinoid species, Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus which occupy contrasting trophic niches. P. lividus is primarily herbivorous, while A. lixula exhibits omnivorous and carnivorous feeding behavior. We characterized microbial communities from coelomic fluid, coelomocytes, and egested fecal pellets, collected from two biogeographic regions, the Northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Applying Next-Generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene (V3-V4 region) and using the FAPROTAX functional annotation database to infer microbial ecological functions, we found distinct microbial signatures shaped by host species, body compartment, and location. Notably, species-specific differences may reflect dietary preferences, with P. lividus enriched in sulfur-metabolizing and phototrophic bacteria, while A. lixula displayed functional signatures potentially linked to nitrogen cycling and microbial pathogenesis. Fecal microbiota exhibited the highest diversity and functional enrichment in carbohydrate degradation and nutrient cycling. Coelomic compartment hosted microbial assemblages with potential immune host-interaction traits, including intracellular symbiosis or parasitism. Geographic variation further shaped microbiota composition, with stronger location-dependent functional shifts observed in P. lividus. These findings reveal a high degree of spatial and functional differentiation in sea urchin microbiomes, highlighting the plastic nature of sea urchin microbiomes and their potential role in host adaptation to environmental change

Undecidability of Group Theory
Treballs Finals de Grau de Matemàtiques, Facultat de Matemàtiques, Universitat de Barcelona, Any: 2026, Director: Enrique Casanovas Ruiz-Fornells[en] One of the central questions in mathematical logic is whether the truths of a given mathematical theory can be captured by a mechanical procedure. That is, given a fixed collection of axioms, can we decide algorithmically whether any statement follows from them? In this work we focus on the first-order theory of groups, one of the most fundamental algebraic theories, and yet one of the earliest examples of an undecidable theory. Our main objective is to present a modern proof of its undecidability, following the classical result of Tarski, Mostowski, and Robinson. The proof proceeds by analysing the relationship between undecidability, the representability of recursive functions, and interpretability between theories. We first study some weak arithmetical theories and establish that they are essentially undecidable. We then show how undecidability can be transferred along interpretations, introducing intermediate theories that bridge arithmetic and the theory of groups. With the help of some general results, this will lead us to the undecidability of group theory.
Endoscopic transorbital superior eyelid approach: anatomical study from a neurosurgical perspective
OBJECTIVERecent studies have proposed the superior eyelid endoscopic transorbital approach as a new minimally invasive route to access orbital lesions, mostly in otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgeries. The authors undertook this anatomical study in order to contribute a neurosurgical perspective, exploring the anterior and middle cranial fossa areas through this purely endoscopic transorbital trajectory.METHODSAnatomical dissections were performed in 10 human cadaveric heads (20 sides) using 0° and 30° endoscopes. A step-by-step description of the superior eyelid transorbital endoscopic route and surgically oriented classification are provided.RESULTSThe authors' cadaveric prosection of this approach defined 3 modular routes that could be combined. Two corridors using bone removal lateral to the superior and inferior orbital fissures exposed the middle and anterior cranial fossa (lateral orbital corridors to the anterior and middle cranial base) to unveil the temporal pole region, lateral wall of the cavernous sinus, middle cranial fossa floor, and frontobasal area (i.e., orbital and recti gyri of the frontal lobe). Combined, these 2 corridors exposed the lateral aspect of the lesser sphenoid wing with the Sylvian region (combined lateral orbital corridor to the anterior and middle cranial fossa, with lesser sphenoid wing removal). The medial corridor, with extension of bone removal medially to the superior and inferior orbital fissure, afforded exposure of the opticocarotid area (medial orbital corridor to the opticocarotid area).CONCLUSIONSAlong with its minimally invasive nature, the superior eyelid transorbital approach allows good visualization and manipulation of anatomical structures mainly located in the anterior and middle cranial fossae (i.e., lateral to the superior and inferior orbital fissures). The visualization and management of the opticocarotid region medial to the superior orbital fissure are more complex. Further studies are needed to prove clinical applications of this relatively novel surgical pathway
Not everyone learns the same: Navigating individual differences in the FL classroom
Individual differences in language acquisition arise from complex interactions between genetic factors, environmental input, and personal characteristics, resulting in significant variation in learning speed, proficiency, and style. Key factors influencing both first and second language acquisition include cognitive abilities (memory, aptitude), personality (introversion/extroversion), motivation, age, and affective variables like anxiety, among others. This webinar will explore how these variables manifest in a classroom setting and why a "one-size-fits-all" approach often fails to reach every student. By understanding the unique profile of each learner, educators can better tailor their instruction to foster a more inclusive and effective environment. Ultimately, "navigating" individual differences isn't about creating 30 different lesson plans for 30 different students; it is about building a flexible framework. When teachers acknowledge that variation is the norm rather than the exception, they move from teaching a curriculum to teaching people
