    Parametrizing numerical semigroups with multiplicity up to 5

    In this work, we give parametrizations in terms of the Kunz coordinates of numerical semigroups with multiplicity up to 5. We also obtain parametrizations of MED semigroups, symmetric and pseudo-symmetric numerical semigroups with multiplicity up to 5. These parametrizations also lead to formulas for the number of numerical semigroups, the number of MED semigroups and the number of symmetric and pseudo-symmetric numerical semigroups with multiplicity up to 5 and given conductor. © 2018 World Scientific Publishing Company

    Bone Loss During the Acute Stage Following Burn Injury: Is It Local or Systemic?

    Objective: To examine post-burn bone loss and determine whether it was local or diffuse. Methods: Thirty-six patients with burn injuries were investigated, and the total body surface area of the burns and their locations were recorded. The bone mineral densities of the lumbar 1-4 vertebrae, bilateral distal forearm, and bilateral proximal femur of the patients were recorded, and these were compared with the measurements of the non-burnt extremity. Results: No statistically significant correlations existed among the total body surface area of the burns, their severity and the z-scores. In addition, when comparing the z-scores of the burnt extremity with those of the non-burnt extremity, no statistically significant difference was found (p > 0.05). Conclusion: In this study, a remarkable decrease in bone mass occurred during the second month following the burn injuries. The post-burn bone loss could not be correlated with the severity of the burns, but these injuries caused systemic bone loss

    Anatomical assessment of chest radiographs

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of anatomical parameters and their measurement as seen on normal posteroanterior (PA) chest radiographs in a Turkish population. Materials and Methods: We evaluated fifty normal PA chest radiographs of Turkish population adults. The frequency of anatomical parameters and their measurement with respect to the diaphragm was evaluated. Results: The frequency of anatomical parameters and their measurement with respect to the diaphragm is as follows: level (right side higher in 98%, left and right sides same level 2%), lobulation (88% absent, 12% present), eventration (98% absent, 2% present) and contour (90% smooth, 10% not smooth); level of hilum (right and left sides same level 52%, left side higher 36%, right side higher 12%); number of pairs of ribs (twelve 96%, unable to determine 4%); number of ribs superposing the lung parenchyma (seven 2%, eight 4%, nine 24%, ten 70%); distance from the lateral margin of the vertebral body to the aorta (16.44 +/- 4.35 mm); angle between the vertebral body and the aorticopulmonary line (16.04 +/- 3.110); the carina angle (58.46 +/- 11.130) and the cardiothoracic ratio (38.75 +/- 4.27). Conclusion: The data presented in this study may be useful in understanding normal thoracic structures. A knowledge of the normal anatomy as well as variations are significant for physicians in the assessment of chest radiographs

    Creatine Transporter Deficiency in Two Brothers with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Creatine transporter deficiency (CTD) is a treatable, X-linked, inborn error of metabolism. Two brothers with autism spectrum disorder were diagnosed with CTD at the ages of 17 and 12 years. Both were found to have a previously reported hemizygous p.408delF (c.1216_1218delTTC) deletion mutation. Both patients were given creatine monohydrate, L-arginine, L-glycine and S-adenosylmethionine, which partially improved the behavioral problems. Serum creatinine levels, creatine peak at brain MR spectroscopy or creatine/creatinine ratio in urine should be evaluated to identify CTD in children with autistic behavior and language disorders

    In Vitro Susceptibility of Tigecycline and Colistin Against Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

    Introduction: Gram-negative bacillus Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is resistant to drugs (multi-drug resistance-MDR) and it can be isolated from nature. Treatment of the infections resulting from S. maltophilia could be problematic due to multi-resistance. Materials and Methods: 72 S. maltophilia strains isolated from clinical samples were included into the study. Sensitivity was determined using Tigecycline and Colistin E-test MIC method performed in the Clinical Microbiology laboratory of Baskent University, Medical Faculty between 2010 and 2014. Results: In our study, colistin MIC range was found as 0.016-8 mg/L. MIC50 and MIC90 values were determined respectively as 1.5 mg/L and 12 mg/L. Tigecycline MIC range was 0-96 mg/L, and MIC50 was 0.19 mg/L and MIC90 was 1.5 mg/L. Furthermore, one tigecycline resistant strain was detected. Conclusion: We believe that the determination of novel treatments and protocols and their standardization using multidisciplinary approaches can facilitate to cope with problematic and resistant nosocomial infections developed by S. maltophilia

    The need for technology management education for undergraduate programs: A conceptual framework

    As the National Research Council [17] described the technology management as “a process, which includes planning, directing, control and coordination of the development and implementation of technological capabilities to shape and accomplish the strategic and operational objectives of an organization’’, Technology Management education is becoming more important for solving problems within organizations. Therefore, institutions of higher education need to lead the way in developing programs, curriculums, departments, and institutes addressing and meeting the needs of industries and the organizations. In this paper we evaluate the need of technology management undergraduate programs and provide some insights about this need. We realize the importance of technology management in both industrial and academic contexts and how important it is to have an interaction and collaboration between the industry organizations and universities. However, there is a lack of technology education on undergraduate level at today’s universities curriculum. While there are many graduate programs on technology management in universities around the world, scholars and practitioners are paying less attention to undergraduate programs on technology management education. Therefore, we focus more on technology management education in undergraduate programs by outlining several assumptions, proposing a conceptual framework based on current debates in literature, and articulating its importance in the academic. © 2018 by authors, all rights reserved

    Long term results of total parathyroidectomy/autotransplantation without cryopreservation in secondary hyperparathyroidism

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and early-late results of subtotal parathyroidectomy and total parathyroidectomy/auto transplantation without cryopreservation conducted on cases with secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). Materials and Methods: 68 patients with secondary HPT who had parathyroidectomy were analysed retrospectively. In group1 (n=47) subtotal parathyroidectomy, in group2 (n=21) total parathyroidectomy/auto transplantation without cryopreservation were performed in our clinic. Patients' demographic characteristics and clinical features were evaluated. Results: In group1 8 patients (14.9%), in group2 17 patients (76.2%) had concurrent thymectomies. The rates of persistant HPT in group1 and group2 were 14.9% (n=7), 4.8% (n=1) respectively. In group2 no recurrent HPT was seen, in group2 10.6% (n=5) of the patients had recurrent HPT. The reasons of persistent and recurrent HPT were ectopic or supernumerary glands in 69.2% (n=9) of the patients. Conclusion:. In patients with end stage renal failure and secondary HPT, bilateral cervical thymectomy concurrent with total parathyroidectomy/auto transplantation without cryopreservation can be applied as a safe and efficient surgical procedure

    The Assessment of Efficiency of Traditional and Complementary Medicine Practices in Neurology

    Traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine practices are used in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide variety of diseases in the world. Such practices in Turkey are regulated by the "Regulation of Traditional and Complementary Medicine Practice" issued by the Ministry of Health in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Turkey (Issue: 29158, 27th October 2014). The appendix of this regulation defines 15 practices that can be applied in units and practice centers. These applications include; 1. Acupuncture, 2. Apitherapy, 3. Phytotherapy, 4. Hypnosis, 5. Leech therapy (Hirudotherapy), 6. Homeopathy, 7. Chiropractic, 8. Cupping, 9. Maggot therapy, 10. Mesotherapy, 11. Prolotherapy, 12. Osteopathy, 13. Ozone therapy, 14. Reflexology, and 15. Music therapy. In this review, the indications of these 15 applications in the field of neurology are examined and current opinions of the evidence-based medical data are summarized

    Media-based clinical research on selfie-related injuries and deaths

    BACKGROUND: The incidence of taking selfies and sharing them on social media as well as selfie-related behaviors is increasing, particularly among young people, possible leading to selfie-related trauma. Therefore, we performed this clinical study to draw attention to selfie-related injuries and deaths. METHODS: We analyzed 159 selfie victims from 111 events or accidents, which were reported in the media sources. We evaluated vital results, demography, rhythmicity, preferences, event or accident types, selfie-related risk factors, affected body regions of victims with causes of injury, and death. RESULTS: We found that the majority of selfie victims were students. Selfie-related injuries and deaths were reported most frequently in India, the US, and Russia. The most preferred site of taking selfies was the edge of the cliff. The most frequently reported event or accident type was falling from a height. Mostly multiple body parts were affected in selfie-related injuries and deaths. The most frequent causes of selfie-related deaths were multitrauma and drowning. CONCLUSION: Selfie-related injuries and deaths have increased in the past years. Particularly, teenagers and young adults are at high risk for selfie-related traumas and deaths; therefore, drastic measures should be taken to reduce their incidence

    Monitoring nodule progression in chest X-ray images

    Lung nodules are frequently observed in cases of cancer. Nodules can be monitored with technologies such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However. x-ray imaging is a low-cost method as well as its widespread usage. In this context, monitoring the nodules in short intervals by x-ray imaging gives benefits in many aspects. In this study, a three-stage novel approach is proposed to trace the nodule progressions from the lung x-ray images, automatically. In the first stage, x-ray images of a patient taken at different times must be registered to evaluate the nodule progression. To perform the registration, feature extraction and matching methods are employed, and then the homography matrix is calculated. In the second stage, according to previously known nodule positions, matched nodules are detected on registered images. Mismatched nodules in the first image are considered as lost, while the nodules only found in the second image are evaluated as newly appeared. In the last stage, nodules are considered as closed contours consisting of pixel set where closed contour area is calculated after nodule matching process. In this way, growth and shrink states are determined numerically. To test the proposed approach, a patient data set provided by Baskent University, Department of Radiology is used. The validation of the test results is performed by an expert radiologist According to the results obtained, the presented nodule progression trace system is found promising
