An empirical study in software engineering: the effects of project-based and project-supported methods on product and academic achievements
The studies show that many software projects exceed the estimated budget and schedule every year, or they are canceled on account of failure, and thus, this causes the waste of resources expressed in billion dollars. Software engineering education is one of the research areas aiming to produce solutions to this important problem. However, it is seen that there is still a need for large amount of skilled and educated software engineers required for the industry, and this workforce gap is also in an increasing fashion. One of the main reasons is thought to be the traditional or teacher-centered methods that are widely adopted in universities. On the other hand, software product development as well as learning and teaching processes, include a series of activities, which require their applications with a range at different levels. Therefore, the instructional methods should be adopted, which primarily concern the knowledge and skills that need to be acquired by engineering students together with the requirements and attributes of software systems to be developed in courses. Project-Assisted Instruction (PAI) and Project-Based Learning (PBL) can be given as examples for this type of methods. Therefore, in this research, the PBL and PAI methods are used in teaching the Database Management Systems Course, and their effects on academic achievements, product and project performances are explored. It is possible to say that the study has two contributions to the engineering research domain. First, (a) it is a study that compares PAI and PBL in an experimental setting. Second, (b) it presents the guidelines and prescriptions for the application of these methods for the domains of computer and software engineering education based on empirical findings
Saldırı tespit sistemlerinde genetik algoritma kullanarak nitelik seçimi ve çoklu sınıflandırıcı füzyonu
With the improvements in information systems, intrusion detection systems (IDS) become more important. IDS can be thought as a classification problem. An important step of classification applications is feature selection step. Nowadays, to improve accuracy of classifiers, it is recommended to use classifier fusion instead of single classifiers. This study proposes to use genetic algorithms for both feature selection and weight selection for classifier fusion in IDS. This proposed system called GA-NS-AB, has been applied to NSL-KDD dataset. Number of classifiers used in fusion changes between 2 and 8. Following classifiers have been used: Adaboost, Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes, Random Forests, Gradient Boosting, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Neural Networks Multi-Layer Perceptron. The results of the proposed method have been compared with simple voting and probability voting fusion methods and single classifiers. In addition, GA-NS-AB is also compared with previous results. GA-NS-AB is a high accuracy classifier fusion that reduces test and training time. © 2018 Gazi Universitesi Muhendislik-Mimarlik. All rights reserved
Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Orthodontics
Orthodontists treat malocclusions by applying three-dimensional forces. For years, the diagnosis of this three-dimensional condition and the related treatment plan has been based on two-dimensional imaging. Lateral and anteroposterior cephalometric, panoramic, and periapical radiographs are some of the two-dimensional radiographs routinely used in orthodontics. Despite being highly beneficial in evaluating skeletal and dental relations, these radiographs fail to provide sufficient two-dimensional information in certain cases. The purpose of this compilation is to review the use of cone-beam computed tomography in orthodontics
Heuristic Evaluation of E-Learning
As Knowledge Management applications, E-learning platforms have been used in many organizations. Universities as knowledge management appliers and early adopters of E-learning platforms as knowledge-sharing channels, making education independent of time and location, created new opportunities for students to become active and collaborative participants of their learning. In this respect, learning management systems offered tools and modules to facilitate knowledge construction, knowledge gathering and sharing among its participants. This study examined the critical factors of usability evaluation of the learning management system Moodle as part of students' blended learning in a computer literacy course at a funded University in Turkey. The model based on Nielsen's 10 heuristics and was tested with data from 236 students. Descriptive statistics showed that students generally agreed with the system and did not face problems when working with it. The study used structural equation modeling (SEM) for data analysis and found eight factors to be significant in the research model after an exploratory factor analysis. (C) AIMI Journal
Assessment of alternative emergency treatments for symptomatic irreversible pulpitis: a randomized clinical trial
Aim To evaluate three emergency procedures for their ability to alleviate clinical symptoms associated with symptomatic teeth having signs of (at least) partial irreversible pulpitis.
Methodology Sixty-six maxillary and mandibular molars were randomly assigned to a total pulpectomy group (TP; n = 22), partial pulpectomy group (PP; n = 22) or pulpotomy group (P; n = 22). Procedure durations were recorded. Patients answered a questionnaire on daily analgesic requirements and about clinical symptoms (pain intensity, chewing sensitivity and thermal sensitivity) after the anaesthetic effect had disappeared (Day 0) and on Days 1, 3 and 7 post-treatment.
Results The total pulpectomy group was associated with the longest procedures (median, 24 min), followed by the partial pulpectomy and pulpotomy groups (P < 0.001 for all). In all three groups, pain intensity, thermal sensitivity and chewing sensitivity decreased significantly from the preoperative time-point to Day 7 (P < 0.001 for all). The total pulpectomy group reported greater reductions in pain intensity than the pulpotomy group between Days 0 and 7, Days 1 and 3, and Days 1 and 7 (P < 0.001 for all). No other intergroup differences were noted regarding reductions in pain intensity, and none were observed with respect to changes in prevalence of thermal sensitivity and chewing sensitivity. There were also no significant intergroup differences regarding the analgesic requirements throughout the 7days.
Conclusion As emergency treatments for teeth having signs of irreversible pulpitis, pulpotomy, partial pulpectomy and total pulpectomy were comparable with respect to relieving clinical symptoms. Pulpotomy may be preferred because it requires significantly less time and is a simple technique that relieves symptoms quickly and effectively
Association of Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte Antigen-4 Gene Polymorphisms with Psoriasis Vulgaris: A Case-Control Study in Turkish Population
Psoriasis is a common, chronic, and autoimmune skin disease in which dysregulation of immune cells, particularly T cells, is thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis. Cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) expressed only on activated T cells is an immunoregulatory molecule and plays a role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders. We aimed to determine whether CTLA-4 gene polymorphisms are associated with development and/or clinical features of psoriasis vulgaris (Pv). Genotyping of SNPs (-318C>T, +49A>G, and CT60A>G) in CTLA-4 gene was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) in 103 Pv patients and 102 controls. No statistically significant associations were detected in any of the investigated genetic models for the -318C>T polymorphism. The genotype distributions of +49A>G and CT60A>G were associated with Pv development. In haplotype analysis, while frequency of CAA haplotype was significantly higher in the control group, frequencies of CGG and CAG haplotype were significantly higher among the patients. However, all of CTLA-4 polymorphisms and haplotypes do not have an effect on severity and onset age of Pv. In conclusion, the +49A>G and CT60A>G polymorphisms may be risk factors for Pv development. Furthermore, CGG and CAG haplotypes may contribute to Pv development, while CAA haplotype may be protective against Pv
A Case of Renal Hydatid Cyst Mimicking a Non-opaque Kidney Stone
Hydatid cyst is an endemic disease in several regions of the world. Renal involvement is rare. Association with kidney stones is even less likely. We report a case with isolated renal hydatid disease mimicking a non-opaque kidney stone
Investigation of the Protective Effects of Acetyl L-Carnitine on Cisplatin-Induced Uterus Toxicity
Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the prophylactic effects of acetyl L-carnitine against to uterus induced by cisplatin.
Methods: Twenty-four female Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: group I (control) was administered with saline; group II was administered with acetyl L-carnitine; group III was administered with cisplatin; group IV was pretreated with acetyl L-carnitine before cisplatin intraperitoneal injection. After 72h of cisplatin injection uterine tissue was removed. Histological and immunohistochemical investigations were performed, respectively.
Results: We found that the number of TUNEL and caspases positive cells were increased in the endometrial epithelium, subepithelial connective tissue, endometrial glands and stroma in group III compare to the other groups. Furthermore inflammation and edema were observed in uterus of rats in group III.
Conclusion: We can concluded that pretreatment of acetyl L-carnitine administration has protective effect on histological alteration of uterus caused by cisplatin
How effective are efficiency studies?: An evaluation in the context of cognitive behavioral therapies
The consensus view is that the main goal of a psychotherapy approach is to make changes in dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors. Therapeutic effectiveness, which is defined as "the establishment of causality between the intervention and the emergent changes in target behavior, symptom, or disorder," has been examined via studies of therapeutic effectiveness. In this review, we aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and/or effectiveness studies in terms of their methods, results, and approaches. In addition, we wanted to discuss debates and criticism about these studies in the context of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In this context, the definition of therapeutic effectiveness has been given and then, the measuring methods have been discussed within the framework of effectiveness, efficacy, and meta-analysis studies. Differences in the point of views regarding the results of effectiveness studies have also been examined. The place of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been discussed in the context of mentioned topics. In the conclusion part, the numbers of questions that are thought to contribute to an effective interpretation for therapeutic effectiveness have been proposed. In this context, it is a fact that Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy, which is one of therapies most widely used, has been determined as effective on depression and anxiety disorder. The CBT's, prevalence, being a structured method, and studies about its impact on therapeutic change strengthens the evidence of its effectiveness. © 2018, Turkish Association of Nervous and Mental Health
On some properties of hyperstonean spaces
This paper is devoted to hyperstonean spaces that are precisely the Stone spaces of measure algebras, or the Stone spaces of the Boolean algebras of L-p-projections of Banach spaces for 1 <= p < infinity, p not equal 2. Several new results that have been achieved recently are discussed. Among these, in our opinion, the most significant one is that which states that any Bochner L-p space is the p-direct sum of Bochner L-p-spaces of perfect regular Borel measures on Stonean spaces for 1 <= p < infinity. Overall, we try to shed some light on the inner structure of these spaces, about which very little is known
