Thermography based approach for the rapid assessment of damage in PA12 obtained by Multijet-Fusion printing technology
Additive manufacturing (AM) allows the creation of structural components adopting several printing strategies. Between them, MultiJet-Fusion (MJF) is one of the most recent AM technologies on the market, offering fast, economical and large production, at the same time, of functional parts which can undergo to several loading conditions, include fatigue. As the final functional parts may have even complex geometries, it is of fundamental importance to rapidly assess the fatigue limit and the SN curve of the material, to allow a proper fatigue design of the components. Under fatigue load conditions, the Polyammide-12 (PA12) has proven to dissipate the mechanical energy into heat and increase its temperature. According to the Thermographic Methods, the temperature can be adopted as a damage index for the material. In the present work, PA12 obtained by MJF technology were tested and monitored with an infrared camera to assess the initiation of damage within the material due to its peculiar internal microstructure, and to accelerate the testing time, in order to provide reliable data for the mechanical design of components
Sex Differences in Oxidative Stress Concerning Allergic Diseases
In recent years, the role of sexual hormones in the pathogenesis and progression of various diseases has progressively being established, which attempts to explain immune dimorphism. Whether physiological or pathological, variations in hormones influence the inflammatory response and adaptive systems to control increased productions of reactive oxygen species, reactive nitrogen species, and free radicals. Primary allergic respiratory and skin diseases were taken into consideration, and possible biomarkers of oxidative stress related to sex differences in the onset and development of atopic diseases were analyzed. Understanding how these variables interact with each other, and evaluating the possible common targets, lays the foundation for the development of tailored therapies with an eye to precision medicine
Alaisa/Halaesa (Sicily): the ancient site and its monetary profile
Ancient Alaisa/Halaesa has been intensely excavated in the last years. Different sectors of the site have been studied - the sanctuary of Apollo by the joint archeological mission of the Universities of Messina and Oxford; the city walls by the University of Palermo; the agorà and the theatre by the Université de Picardie “Jules Verne” of Amiens. As a result, the site has yielded a significant number of coins. We can draw from them a general overview of circulation to be compared with what we know from previous excavations and output of the city’s mint.
The study of the coin finds has potential for a diachronic reconstruction of the circulation of coins in this area of Sicily. In turn, this can be compared with other areas of the north-eastern Tyrrhenian coast of the island, with the aim of providing a general understanding of the history of this ancient centre
LA POLITICA DI AIUTI ALIMENTARI DELLA CEE (1978-1985)
La tesi analizza la genesi, lo sviluppo e la strutturazione della politica degli aiuti alimentari della Comunità Economica Europea (CEE) tra il 1978 e il 1985, periodo cruciale nel quale l’aiuto alimentare è passato da strumento occasionale a leva programmatica della cooperazione allo sviluppo. L’analisi si colloca all’intersezione tra storia delle relazioni internazionali, storia dell’integrazione europea e politiche di sviluppo, offrendo una ricostruzione dettagliata dei processi politici, istituzionali ed economici che hanno segnato questa trasformazione.
L’aiuto alimentare, inteso come trasferimento di derrate agricole da parte di Paesi donatori a Paesi in via di sviluppo, rappresenta uno strumento controverso, al crocevia tra solidarietà umanitaria e interesse geopolitico. In questo quadro, la tesi mostra come la CEE, da iniziale beneficiaria di aiuti post-bellici, si sia affermata nel tempo come uno dei principali donatori mondiali, grazie all’evoluzione della Politica Agricola Comune (PAC) e alla generazione di eccedenze strutturali. A partire dal 1978, con la proposta del regolamento quadro sull’aiuto alimentare, la Commissione Europea avviò un processo volto a istituzionalizzare questa politica in chiave di cooperazione allo sviluppo, culminato nel 1985 con il terzo rinnovo della Convenzione di Lomé, che sancì formalmente l’integrazione dell’aiuto alimentare tra gli strumenti di cooperazione CEE-ACP.
La tesi si articola in quattro capitoli: il primo ricostruisce le origini dell’aiuto alimentare internazionale e l’evoluzione del ruolo della CEE fino al 1978. Il secondo analizza le dinamiche istituzionali e i conflitti interni tra Commissione, Consiglio e Parlamento durante i tentativi di riforma (1978-1980), evidenziando la politicizzazione del dibattito e il ruolo attivo del Parlamento europeo e del gruppo faim dans le monde. Il terzo capitolo esamina il biennio 1981-1982, segnato dal riorientamento francese e italiano in materia di cooperazione e dal protagonismo della Direzione Generale VIII sotto la guida di Edgard Pisani. Il quarto capitolo si concentra infine sulle nuove iniziative del triennio 1983-1985, in un contesto internazionale segnato da crisi alimentari e cambiamenti nel rapporto Nord-Sud. Attraverso un’approfondita ricerca archivistica presso gli Archivi Storici dell’Unione Europea, della Commissione e del Parlamento, oltre che mediante fonti orali e bibliografia specialistica, il lavoro contribuisce a colmare un vuoto storiografico evidenziando come l’aiuto alimentare sia stato uno snodo cruciale per la definizione dell’identità esterna della CEE e per l’evoluzione delle sue politiche di cooperazione allo sviluppo. Il caso della politica alimentare rappresenta un esempio emblematico di come interessi agricoli, istanze umanitarie e dinamiche politiche si siano intrecciate nella costruzione della dimensione globale dell’Europa
Glucosyl OPE-modified halloysite nanotubes and their potential as phototherapy agents for bacterial infections
Bacterial infections pose a significant health threat, worsened by the growing issue of antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation. Phototherapies, particularly photodynamic therapy (PDT), offer promising non-invasive alternatives due to their high efficacy and minimal side effects. These therapies utilize photosensitizers (PSs), which, when activated by light, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lead to bacterial cell death. Recent advancements have focused on enhancing PDT by integrating PSs with nanomaterials. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), a natural clay mineral, are of particular interest due to their unique properties, including intrinsic antibacterial activity and the ability to integrate into bacterial biofilms. By combining HNTs with photosensitizers, we aimed to improve treatment efficacy. In this study, we synthesized a novel glucosyl OPE derivative and covalently attached it to HNTs, forming the composite HNTs@Glu-OPE. This system was thoroughly characterized, and its ROS generation capabilities were tested under 365 nm light irradiation using uric acid as a probe. Loaded with vancomycin, HNTs@Glu-OPE represents a multifunctional approach to PDT, enhancing both the delivery and effectiveness of therapeutic agents against resistant bacterial strains
System and method for voltage drift monitoring
A method for monitoring voltage drift includes measuring a voltage across a diode of a power device, providing the measured voltage as an input to a controller, the controller being configured to run a transformer-based model, and forecasting a range of expected future values of the voltage across the diode of the power device with the transformer-based model. The transformer-based model may include a temporal fusion transformer with a temporal convolutional neural network and an adversarial compensation model with a backpropagation algorithm
Le cancellature della Corte costituzionale sull’autonomia differenziata: dalla monade al principio di sussidiarietà
Con la sentenza n. 192/2024 la Corte costituzionale è intervenuta in maniera significativa sulla disciplina dell’autonomia differenziata di cui alla l. n. 86/2024. L’articolo esamina a tutto tondo la decisione richiamando la tecnica artistica della “cancellatura”: la Corte costituzionale, infatti, ha creato una nuova normativa eliminando le parti in stridente contrasto con la Costituzione (attraverso puntuali decisioni di accoglimento) o reinterpretando in senso costituzionalmente orientato numerosi profili che pure non sembravano conformi al dettato costituzionale. La ricerca mira, quindi, a ricostruire in maniera critica il procedimento di differenziazione che risulta vigente a seguito della sentenza, mettendo in luce anche talune questioni rimaste insolute. Nelle conclusioni, l’indagine si sofferma sul significato da attribuire all’intervento della Corte costituzionale e sull’inserimento del regionalismo differenziato “riscritto” nell’ordinamento costituzionale
Behavioral plasticity of blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) in captivity: insights into conservation strategies for endangered ungulates
Captivity-induced behavioral adaptations in animals are critical to understanding species welfare and optimizing conservation strategies. This study explores the behavioral plasticity of blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra), a regionally extinct species in Pakistan, housed in four captive facilities in Punjab, Pakistan. Observations of 60 blackbucks (20 males, 40 females) over 1 year were conducted using a focal animal sampling method, covering 24 observations per animal. Seven key behavioral dimensions were identified and analyzed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), explaining 58% of the total variance. Reproductive behaviors (PC1) accounted for 14.3% of the variance, while feeding behaviors (PC2) contributed 9.4%. Gender-specific adaptations showed males prioritizing reproductive displays and territorial behaviors, while females emphasized feeding and energy conservation, with significant differences in PC1 (P < 0.01) and PC2 (P < 0.05). Temporal and environmental factors appeared minimal, with captivity-specific constraints, such as controlled feeding schedules and enclosure size, dominating behavioral patterns. These findings underscore the importance of balancing natural instincts and captive constraints to promote animal welfare and successful reintroduction. Teacher support and school refusal: differences and predictive ability in adolescents.
Regular
school attendance is essential for adolescents’ academic, social, and emotional development. The concept of
school attendance problems encompasses various manifestations of absenteeism, with absenteeism standing out
due to its high prevalence, affecting approximately 30% of students internationally. Within the school environ
ment, perceived school climate, and specifically, teacher support, plays a crucial role in preventing absenteeism.
In this context, the present study aims to examine differences in perceived teacher support between students with
high and low levels of absenteeism, as well as the predictive value of this perception for identifying students at
greater risk. Using a sample of 724 Spanish students, teacher support was assessed through the What’s
Happening In This School? (WHITS) questionnaire, and unjustified absenteeism through the Assessing Reasons
for School Non-attendance (ARSNA) scale. Results indicated that students with higher levels of unjustified absen
teeism perceived significantly lower levels of teacher support. Moreover, lower perceived support predicted a
higher likelihood of reporting unjustified school non-attendance. These findings highlight the protective role of
teacher support against absenteeism and its relevance in fostering student well-being. The study emphasizes the
need to promote educational strategies aimed at strengthening positive and socioemotional bonds between teach
ers and students. Despite limitations, such as the cross-sectional design and reliance on self-reported measures,
the results reinforce the importance of incorporating teacher support into school policies to prevent unjustified
absenteeism effectively
