    Spatial data and GIS for the assessment of the environmental impact at Mount Etna

    One of the fundamental tasks for environmental impact assessment and natural risk management is the accurate and updated cataloging of road infrastructures and buildings. This is particularly important in volcanic areas, in order to predict the range of damage and disruption, and therefore losses and reconstruction costs that could result from an eruption. GIS allows immediate access to spatial data with the ability to overlay location-based information for easy interpretation, providing a critical tool for assessing and mitigating risk from natural phenomena. In this work, we present an innovative GIS-based system for the identification of the values exposed to volcanic eruptions at Mount Etna, which can be used in both the readiness and response phases to a volcanic emergency. We carried out a precision mapping of buildings and road infrastructures on the flanks of the Etna volcano, giving particular attention to the exposed sensitive buildings (such as schools, barracks, hospitals, etc.) and to the construction and roofing characteristics. The result is an informative and dynamic platform that offers new opportunities and challenges to decision makers for the definition of both long-term strategies, such as territorial planning, and short-term strategies, for the prediction of the impact of eruptions or for managing evacuations during volcanic emergencies

    Application of a generalized heat equation to ultra-fast in viscoanelastic isotropic medium.

    Abstract Using a classical irreversible thermodynamics of internal variables (CIT-IV) with V.Ciancio’s procedure, viscous-inelastic flow relations have been derived by generalizing the Duhamel-Neumann law for ordinary thermoelastic phenomena in isotropic media and the relations for elastic media and for Maxwell, Jeffreys and Poynting-Thomson bodies. In literature, Fourier and Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte’s(MCV) heat transport equations are based on hypothesis that lack physical confirmation while the V.Ciancio model obtains both mathematical and physical applications. In this context, through the simple description of the ultra-fast process of energy transmission from a laser source to metal film, using the principles of thermodynamics, the heat equation is derived in the case of isotropic viscoanelastic media subject to constant strain. The solution, obtained numerically with the finite element method, not only highlights the physical significance of the phenomenological coefficients, but also specifies the limits of the previous theories of the MCV

    The Sicilian (Italy) accession of Echinops spinosissimus Turra subsp. spinosissimus: the essential oil chemical composition of its aerial parts

    The genus Echinops L. (Asteraceae) is geographical widely distribution across Mediterranean area, Africa, and Asia. Echinops spinosissimus Turra is a perennial herbaceous plant and it is divided into eight subspecies. This species is native to south-eastern Europe, northern Africa, and southwest Asia. Chemical composition of the essential oil (EO) from the aerial parts of a Sicilian accession of E. spinosissimus subsp. spinosissimus, investigated for the first time in this study, was evaluated by gas chromatography (GC-MS). The EO (Ess) was characterised by good amounts of monoterpenoids (49.5%), with linalool as main constituent (13.1%), and carbonylic compounds (20.5%). An update of the composition of all the EOs of Echinops species was carried out and their composition have been compared with the results obtained from the Sicilian accession of E. spinosissimus subsp. spinosissimus

    This study aims to demonstrate how the integration of advanced semiconductor technologies, such as Wide Bandgap materials, can significantly enhance the efficiency of power converters, offering innovative solutions for applications in electric traction and renewable energy systems. It focuses on a specific open-end winding topology in terms of both efficiency and cost. This topology incorporates a multilevel inverter that operates with low-frequency step modulation to minimize conduction losses, along with a two-level inverter functioning as a high-frequency filter to improve the output current waveform quality. Specifically, the study evaluates five different solutions, with an emphasis on power losses and economic feasibility. Preliminary simulation results, obtained using the thermal module of the PSIM software, provide valuable insights into achieving an optimal balance between cost and efficiency during the conversion process

    OS03-01 Exploring the Role of YY1 in Clock Genes Regulation and Breast Cancer in Night Shift Workers

    Breast cancer (BC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women, with night shift work (NSW) identified as a significant risk factor due to its disruption of circadian rhythms. Since 2019, NSW has been classified as a Group 2A carcinogen by the IARC [1]. Prolonged exposure to NSW has been linked to increased risk of BC, primarily due to its effects on melatonin synthesis, which impacts anti-estrogenic and anti-oxidant properties [2]. The transcription factor Yin Yang 1 (YY1) plays a pivotal role in BC tumorigenesis by regulating the expression of key genes involved in oncogenic pathways 3, 4. In addition to its role in cancer, YY1 has been shown to modulate the expression of clock genes, influencing circadian rhythms that are potentially disrupted by NSW 5, 6. Occupational toxicology plays a critical role in assessing the long-term health risks associated with NSW, including its function as an occupational carcinogen through chronic circadian misalignment and endocrine disruption [7]. Our previous work demonstrated differential expression of 12 clock genes in BC diagnosed in NSW-exposed women, including marked over-expression of BHLHE40, CIART, CLOCK, PDPK1, and TIMELESS, and significant under-expression of HLF, NFIL3, NPAS3, PER1, PER3, SIM1, and TEF [8]. This study aims to further investigate the regulatory role of YY1 in BC development among night shift workers. Using the Nurse Health Study (NHS) gene expression dataset (GSE115577), we analyzed YY1 expression in both BC and normal breast tissue. Our results demonstrate that YY1 is upregulated in BC, especially in luminal and basal subtypes, and in grade 3 tumors. Additionally, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis suggests that YY1 could serve as a predictive biomarker for BC risk in NSW workers. STRING networking revealed that YY1 directly interacts with key clock genes such as PDPK1, NFIL3, CLOCK, and BHLHE40, underscoring its involvement in circadian gene regulation in BC. HuRI mapping of protein-protein interactions in normal breast tissue further highlighted indirect interactions with other clock genes, including BHLHE40, CIART, NFIL3, and PER1, suggesting a broader regulatory network. PINA 3.0 analysis revealed that YY1 expression is correlated with key BC prognostic genes and interacts with critical BC driver genes, establishing YY1 as a central modulator of both circadian regulation and BC progression. In conclusion, these findings emphasize the crucial role of YY1 in regulating circadian pathways in BC, particularly among NSW-exposed women, and suggest that YY1 may serve as both an early detection biomarker and a therapeutic target. Further validation studies are needed to confirm these computational predictions and assess their clinical applicability for improving BC prevention and treatment in night shift workers, reinforcing the need for a stronger occupational toxicology framework to mitigate long-term health risks associated with NSW

    Occurrence of long COVID in healthcare workers at a University Hospital and challenges in insurance and compensation evaluation

    Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), developed in 2019, led to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic state, which have significantly impacted on healthcare systems worldwide. During the pandemic state, in addition to all the problems related to high mortality and morbidity during the active phase of the disease, it had to deal with a condition known as "Long-COVID". Long-COVID includes both persistent symptomatic forms, where signs and symptoms last between 4 and 12 weeks, and post-COVID syndrome, where symptoms persist beyond 12 weeks. The evaluation system categorizes COVID-19 outcomes into four classes based on the degree of biological validity impairment: mild, moderate, moderate-severe, and severe. In the insurance field, this new "entity" led to difficulties related to damages compensation for infections developed in workplace, which has not completely been clarified nor today. Methods: The study was conducted on a sample of 3,127 health-care workers employed at the "G. Martino" University Hospital, in Messina. The percentage of individuals who contracted COVID-19 was analysed, evaluating how many were infected at workplace. Among those who contracted the virus at work, we further examined how many healthcare professionals were eligible for compensation under insurance frameworks related to Long- COVID. Results: The data analysis reveals that, out of the entire sample examined, 10 healthcare workers developed Long-COVID syndrome, with a severity classified as moderate (Biological Damage according to social insurance of healthcare workers: 1-15%). The lingering ef-fects included persistent asthenia, anosmia, stress-induced dyspnoea, outcomes of instrumentally documented pneumonia and myocarditis, as well as neuromuscular disorders. The collected data confirms that healthcare professionals had the highest percentage of COVID-19 infections (Fig. 1), with an infection rate of 23%, more than half of which occurred in the workplace. Discussion and conclusions: The definition of long-COVID is still quite complicated, as the ever-increasing number of symptoms that are attributable to this pathology, and the variability in the times of its onset, make its nosographic framework extremely difficult. In addition to the clinical-scientific difficulties arising from this condition, the impossibility of adequately classifying the pathology is associated with an equally complex management of the costs that the State must bear to restore the damage, as it usually happens in case of sequelae of infections contracted at workplace
