Immobile after death. Taphonomic observations of a bone deposit exposed to nature for a year

    No full text
International audienceOn the site of Cumae (Campania, Italy), each funerary monument and each burial is photogrammetrically recorded from the moment it is discovered until it is completely excavated. Using 3D models, we were able to work on the taphonomy of a bone deposit between its discovery in June 2022 and its excavation in June 2023. The bone deposit of interest to us is located on a bed, in the later-Republican mausoleum (MSL73225), which has been preserved in elevation and has not been filled in. This assemblage is fully skeletonised remains of cranial elements, long bones and girdle elements, well preserved and sub-complete, with an estimated Minimum Number of Individuals of 2. This deposit does not show any organisation or connection and results of the pillaging of the mausoleum, stratigraphically situated in the 19th century. In June 2022, the skeletal remains lay on the sandy sediment of the bed and some were partially covered by brown sand sediment. Nothing was excavated, only topographed andphotogrammed. In June 2023, the bones were underwater. After the groundwater retreated, appears three levels of intrusive sedimentary fill interspersed with a black level of accumulated degraded organic matter (mainly plant material) to a height of between 3 and 10 cm, the last undercovered the bone deposit. The deposit is located at a depth of -4.08 m below sea level and one meter below the highest ground-water level, which is why it will be submerged during the 2023 campaign. Digital comparison of the 3D models from 2022 and 2023 (aperture and excavated) enables us to discuss the height of the deposits accumulated over one year and to study the behaviour of the bone deposit. A comparison of the bone deposit from 2022/2023 shows, the sediment or different intrusion of water are not impact on the deposit

Introduction : Minority Forms of Resilience in the Post-Ottoman World

    No full text
International audienceIn this introduction, we propose a genealogy of “minority,” both as a concept and legal category, and of its uses and applications, in the post-Ottoman Mediterranean. Acknowledging its legal incipience in the post-Great War treaties imposed on newly independent Central and Eastern European states, we claim that, in the Eastern Mediterranean, that category grafted itself on the preexisting regimes of capitulations and protection. But while the latter were regimes of privileges, guaranteed by Western powers, and accorded to European citizens and some Ottoman subjects, that of minority was one of an unwelcome exception, feebly defended by the League of Nations, within the constraining environment of the newly formed nation-states. The literature has extensively studied the human cost of that transition from capitulations/protection to minorities in the post-Ottoman world. Instead, our collective effort intends to highlight the strategies of resilience developed by minorities in the Eastern Mediterranean following the final collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1922. The central argument running through the entire book is that the resilience of pockets of religious and ethnolinguistic diversity around the Mediterranean became essential to the constant reassertion of sovereign claims on the part of post-Ottoman nation-states

Quand le privé « fabrique » des « hauts fonctionnaires »: La construction politico-institutionnelle d’une frontière poreuse entre « public » et « privé » au Pérou

    No full text
International audienceThe corruption scandals of recent years in Peru have highlighted the existence of a politicoadministrative system based on circulations between ‘public’ and ‘private’ spaces. This article invites us to look at these revolving doors beyond the single issue of conflict of interest, to consider what they reveal about the struggles and power relations that seek to preserve, or on the contrary to change, the legitimate characteristics of those who hold state power. More specifically, it seeks to link the study of these circulations back to the social and political environment in which they took place. The article also stresses the need to take account of the broader sociological dimensions underlying these movements, pointing out that strategies for professionalisation (and movement) are not the same depending on the social origin of civil servantsLes scandales de corruption de ces dernières années au Pérou ont remis en lumière l’existence d’un système politico-administratif fondé sur des circulations entre espaces « publics » et « privés ».

    No full text
International audienceHow did Roman magistrates hire the apparitores who assisted them? While a procedure of drawing lots did exist for the decuries of apparitores , a closer look at the sources suggests that it was probably less strict and less systematic than previously assumed. Whether it comes to the scribes, for whom the absence of decuria for magistrates with imperium constituted a major problem for the idea of recruitment by strict drawing of lots, or to other apparitors, it is clear that other procedures and other criteria, such as patronage or specific skills, played a significant roleComment les magistrats romains recrutaient-ils les appariteurs qui allaient les assister ?

ANCHISE: Bridging Social Sciences and Digital Technologies to Safeguard Archaeological Heritage An Interdisciplinary Approach to Combat Cultural Heritage Crime

    No full text
International audienceArchaeological heritage preservation represents one of our most fundamental connections to "the past", yet it faces unprecedented threats from illicit trafficking networks that exploit technological and legal gaps as well as from insufficient understanding of social contexts by trafficking fighters. While numerous digital tools have emerged for heritage protection, their effectiveness remains limited due to fragmented approaches that fail to integrate social sciences with technological innovation. This paper contributes to ongoing discussions about the role of digital technologies in preserving and studying the past by offering concrete examples of successful interdisciplinary collaborations. By documenting these collaborative processes and their outcomes, this research provides a replicable model for future interdisciplinary initiatives addressing complex challenges in cultural heritage protection and digital humanities research.</div
