Systemic Sustainability: Toward an Organic Model of Governance\textemdasha Research Note

    No full text
International audienceIncreasing pressure for sustainable development has resulted in a multitude of reporting practices intended to provide more transparent information on progress toward greater sustainability. We argue that measurement as an operating mode has emerged as a magic solution for reversing the trend towards unsustainable development, but as tools the use of such metrics cannot alone be regarded as sufficient to achieve this goal. We assert that to enable reflection on coherent systems of governance much work is needed on the conceptualisation, determinants and consequences of sustainable development. To this end we urge a shift away from this existing mechanistic type of corporate and public governance and propose a systemic transformation to cooperative multi-level interactions in governance where local communities are empowered to act according to the natural rhythyms of the planet. Our framework for this transformation, which we term organic governance, departs from local actions carried out in isolation, moving towards a global vision integrated at the national and regional levels based on shared values drawn from deeper understandings of natural ecosystems at local levels. This approach requires continual adaptation at local levels where economy and policy making serve the social well-being of local communities. In this research note we set out the conceptual basis for our organic governance framework. \textcopyright 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature

Metaverse beyond the hype: multidisciplinary perspectives on emerging challenges, opportunities, and agenda for research, practice and policy

    No full text
FNEGE 3, ABS 2International audienceThe metaverse has the potential to extend the physical world using augmented and virtual reality technologies allowing users to seamlessly interact within real and simulated environments using avatars and holograms. Virtual environments and immersive games (such as, Second Life, Fortnite, Roblox and VRChat) have been described as antecedents of the metaverse and offer some insight to the potential socio-economic impact of a fully functional persistent cross platform metaverse. Separating the hype and “meta…” rebranding from current reality is difficult, as “big tech” paints a picture of the transformative nature of the metaverse and how it will positively impact people in their work, leisure, and social interaction. The potential impact on the way we conduct business, interact with brands and others, and develop shared experiences is likely to be transformational as the distinct lines between physical and digital are likely to be somewhat blurred from current perceptions. However, although the technology and infrastructure does not yet exist to allow the development of new immersive virtual worlds at scale - one that our avatars could transcend across platforms, researchers are increasingly examining the transformative impact of the metaverse. Impacted sectors include marketing, education, healthcare as well as societal effects relating to social interaction factors from widespread adoption, and issues relating to trust, privacy, bias, disinformation, application of law as well as psychological aspects linked to addiction and impact on vulnerable people. This study examines these topics in detail by combining the informed narrative and multi-perspective approach from experts with varied disciplinary backgrounds on many aspects of the metaverse and its transformational impact. The paper concludes by proposing a future research agenda that is valuable for researchers, professionals and policy makers alike

    No full text
International audienceThis paper synthesises research on artificial intelligence (AI) in e-commerce and proposes guidelines on how information systems(IS) research could contribute to this research stream. To this end, the innovative approach of combining bibliometric analysis withan extensive literature review was used. Bibliometric data from 4335 documents were analysed, and 229 articles published in leadingIS journals were reviewed. The bibliometric analysis revealed that research on AI in e-commerce focuses primarily on recommendersystems. Sentiment analysis, trust, personalisation, and optimisation were identified as the core research themes. It also places China-based institutions as leaders in this researcher area. Also, most research papers on AI in e-commerce were published in computerscience, AI, business, and management outlets. The literature review reveals the main research topics, styles and themes that havebeen of interest to IS scholars. Proposals for future research are made based on these findings. This paper presents the first study thatattempts to synthesise research on AI in e-commerce. For researchers, it contributes ideas to the way forward in this research area.To practitioners, it provides an organised source of information on how AI can support their e-commerce endeavours

World of origin: The contagious ingredient of monastic products

    No full text
International audienceThis paper addresses the question of the resources that consumers rely on when faced with products that communicate very little. When consumers purchase items from Christian abbeys, this question is particularly significant given that these organizations, while sharing a common history, are spatially dispersed. Through qualitative interviews with purchasers of monastic products, our research confirms the contagion process from products’ origin to consumers, and proposes the new concept of World of Origin (WOO), a cloud-like representation serving as an extrinsic source of meaning and acting as a substitute for strong brand narratives. Distinct from Country of Origin, terroir, brand aura, and heritage, WOO is an addition to the marketing conceptual toolbox, facilitating a thinner grain analysis of consumption phenomena. The contagious power of WOO enriches the research on the context’s influence and enables a discussion of the consequences of consumers themselves creating embellished or even false inventions of the past

Facilitating Collaboration for Responsible Management Education: Voluntary Brokerage in the PRME Network

    No full text
International audienceIntermediary actors have been recognized for their role in facilitating collaborations to achieve sustainability goals. Yet how voluntary sustainability collaborations, guided by intermediary actors, unfold in practice remains underdeveloped. Building on empirical data from the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) network and using a network brokerage lens, we unfold dynamics of voluntary sustainability collaboration in the presence of an intermediary actor. We find that intermediaries act as sustained iungens brokers in voluntary sustainability collaborations, by connecting other actors and coordinating new collaborations in a multi-level network. Their activities are affected by tensions inherent to iungens brokerage in a voluntary setting, and factors influencing the success of the network collaborations. We contribute to the sustainability literature by offering a firsthand view on the dynamics of sustainability collaborations through an autoethnographic approach. We provide implications for sustainability collaborations in voluntary settings and recommendations for advancing responsible management education through collaboration

Standardization of the assessment process within telerehabilitation in chronic diseases: a scoping meta-review

    No full text
International audienceBackground Telerehabilitation (TR) interventions are receiving increasing attention. They have been evaluated in various scientific areas through systematic reviews. However, there is a lack of data on how to standardize assessment and report on their domains to guide researchers across studies and bring together the best evidence to assess TR for chronic diseases. Aims and objectives The aim of this study was to identify domains of assessment in TR and to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze how and when they are examined to gain an overview of assessment in chronic disease. Methods A scoping meta-review was carried out on 9 databases and gray literature from 2009 to 2019. The keyword search strategy was based on "telerehabilitation ", “evaluation" , “chronic disease" and their synonyms. All articles were subjected to qualitative analysis using the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Core Model prior to further analysis and narrative synthesis. Results Among the 7412 identified articles, 80 studies met the inclusion criteria and addressed at least one of the noncommunicable diseases (NCD) categories of cardiovascular disease (cardiovascular accidents), cancer, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, and obesity. Regarding the domains of assessment, the most frequently occurring were “ social aspect” ( n = 63, 79%) (e.g., effects on behavioral changes) and “ clinical efficacy” ( n = 53, 66%), and the least frequently occurring was “safety aspects” ( n = 2, 3%). We also identified the phases of TR in which the assessment was conducted and found that it most commonly occurred in the pilot study and randomized trial phases and least commonly occurred in the design , pretest , and post-implementation phases. Conclusions Through the HTA model, this scoping meta-review highlighted 10 assessment domains which have not been studied with the same degree of interest in the recent literature. We showed that each of these assessment domains could appear at different phases of TR development and proposed a new cross-disciplinary and comprehensive method for assessing TR interventions. Future studies will benefit from approaches that leverage the best evidence regarding the assessment of TR, and it will be interesting to extend this assessment framework to other chronic diseases

Regulating Platform Fees under Price Parity

    No full text
Online intermediaries greatly expand consumer information, but also raise sellers’ marginal costs by charging high commissions. To prevent disintermediation, some platforms adopted price parity and anti-steering provisions, which restrict sellers’ ability to use alternative sales channels. Whether to uphold, reform, or ban these provisions has been at the center of the policy debate, but, so far, little consensus has emerged. As an alternative, this paper studies how to cap platforms’ commissions. The utilitarian cap reflects the Pigouvian precept according to which the platform should charge net fees no greater than the informational externality it exerts on other market participants

Трансграничные потоки данных, общий регламент защиты персональных данных и управление данными

    No full text
International audienceToday, cross-border data flows are an important component ofinternational trade and an element of digital service models. However, they are impededby restrictions on cross-border personal data transfers and data localization legislation. ThisArticle focuses primarily on these complexities and on the impact of the new EuropeanUnion (“EU”) legislation on personal data protection—the GDPR. First, this Articleintroduces its discussion of these flows by placing them in their economic and geopoliticalsetting, including a discussion of the results of a lack of international harmonization of lawin the area. In this framework, rule overlap and rival standards are relevant. Once thissituation is established, this Article turns to an analysis of the legal measures that havefilled the gap left by the lack of international regulation and the failure to harmonize law:extraterritorial laws in the European Union (regional legislation) and the United States(state legislation); and data localization laws in China and Russia. Specific provisionsrestricting cross-border personal data transfers are detailed under EU legislation, as are theinternational agreements that have been invaluable in allowing flows between the UnitedStates and the European Union to continue—first the Safe Harbor, and now the Privacy Shield. Finally, in this context, the role of data governance is investigated, both in thecontext of data controllers’ accountability for the actions of other actors in global supplychains under EU law and under the Privacy Shield. Thus, this Article goes beyond the lawitself, to place requirements in the context of the globalized business world of data flows, and to suggest ways that companies may improve their compliance position worldwide.
