This thesis investigates foot lesions in young bulls reared indoors in France, an underexplored population despite its major contribution to national beef production. Threecomplementary areas were developed: an estimation of the prevalence and types of lesions observed at slaughter, an analysis of the associations between foot lesions and carcass traits, and an assessment of potential risk factors based on live trajectory data of the animals. The results reveal a very high prevalence of lesions, both mechanical and infectious in origin. Painful lesions (interdigital phlegmon and bulb ulcer) were associated with lower carcass weight or poorer conformation. In contrast, sole hemorrhages and heel horn erosion were associated with increased carcass weight, and sole hemorrhages with better conformation.Several risk factors were identified, including management practices (animal purchase, season), farm type (breeder-finisher vs. specialized fattener), and breed. The postmortem slaughterhouse approach enabled access to a population that is difficult to monitor on-farm and demonstrated that young bulls are not spared from locomotor disorders.
Inside-out: modelling the link between Zika virus viral dynamics within hosts and transmission to vectors across host species and virus strains
International audienceEpidemiological models of mosquito-borne virus transmission often lack accurate estimates of host-to-vector transmission probability. Here, we estimated this probability for two strains of Zika virus (ZIKV)—one sylvatic and one human-endemic—from two monkey species to Aedes albopictus mosquitoes using experimental infection data. Viral dynamics did not differ between monkey species, although one (cynomolgus macaque) is a native ZIKV host and the other (squirrel monkey) a novel host, but did differ between strains, with viremia for the human-endemic strain peaking later and lower than the sylvatic strain. Only the sylvatic strain was transmitted to mosquitoes. Within mosquitoes, anatomical barriers influence viral progression to salivary glands, complicating host infectiousness estimation. We quantified the probability of viral dissemination to the legs in Ae. albopictus , which increased with host viral load and was higher after feeding on squirrel monkeys than on cynomolgus macaques. We also found a positive relationship between virus titre in mosquito legs and virus detection in saliva after a 14-day extrinsic incubation period. Combining these factors, we found that squirrel monkeys were on average 1.5 times more infectious to Ae. albopictus than cynomolgus macaques. These estimates will help assess ZIKV’s potential to establish an enzootic, sylvatic cycle in the Americas
Thermal conversion of cellulose fiber under slow pyrolysis: Kinetics, thermodynamics and related chemical species
International audienceThis study discusses the thermal conversion of cellulose fiber and the governing kinetic, chemical and thermodynamic phenomena. Activation energy () and pre-exponential factor (A) were evaluated for the range of temperature [20–600 °C] under three low heating rates 1.5, 2.5 and 5 °C min−1 using different model-free and model-fitting methods and are around 205 kJ mol−1 and 2.4 × 10+20 s−1, respectively. Coats-Redfern method was used to identify the thermal degradation reaction mechanism. Biobased carbonized fiber yield increases with lower heating rate and goes from 15.5 % for 5 °C min−1 to 19 % for 1.5 °C min−1 through a spontaneous endothermic process. The evolution of prominent volatiles and light gases was evaluated by mass spectrometry and gas chromatography combined with Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy. This study may be useful for future research into bio-based carbonized fibers, and their applicability on an industrial scale with considering all related parameters

Dose Heterogeneity Reduces Radiation Oxygen Dependence in Both Tumor and Healthy Tissues: The Case of Proton Minibeam Radiation Therapy
International audiencePurpose: Proton minibeam radiation therapy (pMBRT) is an innovative delivery technique characterized by spatially modulated radiation. It was shown to increase the therapeutic index in preclinical glioma models by reducing toxicities while maintaining or even increasing tumor control. Moreover, pMBRT leads to differential immunomodulatory effects. Both dosimetry and radiobiology diverge from classical concepts. We hypothesize that the distinct mechanisms and characteristics of pMBRT could reduce the oxygen dependence of radiation tissue response. Methods and Materials: To address this question, in this study, glioblastoma-bearing and naïve animals were irradiated with different oxygen supplementation concentrations with a single fraction of pMBRT or conventional proton therapy (CPT) at an average dose of 25 Gy. The differential effects of blood oxygenation were assessed by analyzing immune response, survival capability, and histopathological changes in brain and bone tissues. The tumor’s hypoxic nature was confirmed by hypoxia inducible factor-1α staining before irradiation. Results: Our results revealed no significant influence of oxygen supplementation on survival outcomes or immune infiltration after pMBRT. These findings contrast with CPT, where oxygen supplementation was detrimental to immune infiltration but improved survival probability. Also, no significant brain or bone tissue alterations have been observed after pMBRT, regardless of blood oxygenation levels during irradiation. These differences highlight the distinct radiobiological effects of pMBRT and its potential to bypass the classical oxygen dependency observed in CPT and conventional radiation therapy. Conclusions: The distinct radiobiological effects of pMBRT have the potential to bypass the classical oxygen dependency. Thus, pMBRT could be beneficial for the treatment of hypoxic tumors
Insulin therapy combined with dietary modification through a carbohydrate-restricted diet represents the current standard of care in diabetic cats. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), characterized by insulin resistance, is believed to be the most common form in this species and is associated with difficulties in achieving stable glycemic control. Many owners and veterinarians report insulin therapy as a reason for refusal of treatment or as leading to consideration of euthanasia. Non-insulin therapeutic agents have been investigated in cats due to the similarities between feline and human type 2 DM, but they have not demonstrated sufficient efficacy. As sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are effective in lowering blood glucose by promoting glycosuria and widely used in human type 2 DM treatment they have also been studied in cats. These studies have shown promising results, leading to the authorization of their use in Europe. They demonstrated good efficacy, tolerability, compliance and safety in newly diagnosed and otherwise healthy cats. However, euglycemic diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA) is a major adverse effect associated with gliflozin treatment. We collected 202 responses from French veterinarians regarding their challenges in managing feline DM and their use of velagliflozin. Our results concerning efficacy, tolerability, and compliance are consistent with previous studies. Nevertheless, one third of the practitioners encountered the development of DKA in relation to certain risk factors associated with the prescribing context.
Opinion of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) on the risks to human health associated with the proliferation of Ostreopsis spp. on the Basque coast
N/AInternational audienceIn France, the presence of marine microalgae of the genus Ostreopsis has been identified repeatedly on the Mediterranean coast for several years, whereas on the French Basque coasts its presence is much more recent. In the summers of 2021 and 2022, major Ostreopsis flowering episodes were reported on the Basque coast, resulting in several hundred cases of intoxication among holidaymakers and residents. The main route of human exposure is inhalation of aerosols, although it is not yet known whether the agents responsible for poisoning are Ostreopsis cells, cell debris, known toxins produced by Ostreopsis, or other as yet unidentified compounds. Other routes of exposure (dermal contact, eye contact, ingestion of contaminated water or seafood) are also possible. Poisoning is manifested through various signs and symptoms, occurring within 48 hours of exposure (Neurosensory and neurological, respiratory, dermal and digestive). This document presents the opinion of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES), established from the work of its WATER and ERCA Expert Committees. ANSES received a request from the Directorate General for Health (DGS) and the Directorate General for Food (DGAL) to update knowledge about Ostreopsis that had been reported in the Agency's opinions from 2007 and 2008 (ANSES, 2007 and 2008), and draw up specific recommendations for managing Ostreopsis proliferation on the Basque coast. The literature review conducted as part of this expert appraisal revealed that knowledge about the genus Ostreopsis (diversity, biology, ecology, toxins produced) is still too fragmentary to characterise the hazard and risk to human health. Nevertheless to help local authorities affected by Ostreopsis blooms, Agency proposes a surveillance and quality monitoring strategy based on collaboration between site managers and the regional health agencies (ARSs), applicable to sites currently subject to bathing water quality monitoring and water sports sites that meet the conditions below
