Assessing the efficiency of the bovine brucellosis surveillance-control system in a disease-free context through agent-based modelling
International audienceAbstract In France, bovine brucellosis is subject to stringent surveillance to ensure early detection of re-emergence and maintain the country's disease-free status. However, the cost-efficiency of such surveillance systems has rarely been assessed. This study aimed to: (1) evaluate the detection delay of bovine brucellosis for current and alternative surveillance systems following its reintroduction; and (2) estimate the associated surveillance and control costs. A mechanistic, stochastic, agent-based simulation model was developed to represent the spread of bovine brucellosis within and between cattle farms in mainland France after the introduction of an infected animal. The results showed: (1) improved efficiency (considering both effectiveness and cost) when suspending testing at introduction; (2) reduced efficiency when annually screening all adults in one-third of suckler herds compared to 20% of adults in all suckler herds; and (3) slightly improved efficiency when reporting abortion series instead of all individual cases. The current surveillance system detected infection within a median delay of 49–51 weeks, with a median of one infected farm at confirmation, regardless of the epidemiological context. For alternative systems, detection occurred within a median of 40–99 weeks, with one to three infected farms. These findings suggest that, under model assumptions, all surveillance systems maintained a relatively low number of infected herds. Our study provides cost-effectiveness information that will help stakeholders compare the efficiency of alternative scenarios, improve the current surveillance system and make relevant decisions about the allocations of resources

Microwave Baking of Biscuits; Towards the Next Generation of Biscuits with the ABCD Project
International audienceBiscuit baking is among the most energy demanding baking process. The ABCD project (Alternative Baking of Dry Cereal products – French ANR National funding) aims at exploring alternative baking strategies using microwave (MW) combined to a post baking infrared process to ensure biscuit’s coloration. During baking, starch is exposed to a very partial gelatinization, meanwhile the impact of proteins denaturation is negligible. Baking soda yield in dough expansion during the first minutes of baking. Sodium bicarbonate and Ammonium bicarbonate are the most used with a thermal degradation extended from ca. 30°C to 80°C. The major energy associated to biscuit baking corresponds to water loss, with a final water content expected to be below 4%. [1] used MW to mitigate biscuits checking; this was also presented at IMPI by [2]. [3] studied MW baking of biscuits with 700 W for 90 s but didn’t mention the mass of biscuits. [4] used MW baking of biscuits; there was no precise information about the specific energy used (baking time 2 - 3 min). Further work is thus needed to better optimize the case of MW baking of biscuits
Hydrogen technology development: towards a revolutionary era in Europe?
International audienceFollowing the synthesis of the European Commission's policy on renewable energies, this article details an overview of the current landscape of hydrogen in Europe as a game changer. The various challenges encountered in the hydrogen development regarding regulatory parameters, economic and technical issues are detailed. Hydrogen production processes are explained with a focus on the financial aspects. Current hydrogen end-users as an energy vector or as a chemical are described with a break-even price correlation with production. To promote the use of renewable hydrogen, decreasing its production cost is unavoidable. Additionally, this article highlights the importance of improving the energy efficiency of hydrogen uses in comparison to conventional fuel, particularly in the mobility sector. Considering the location of hydrogen end-users and producers, flexibility is essential in the electrical network, as well as in hydrogen transmission and storage infrastructures, to ensure the security of supply. As an illustration, this article discusses European projects that involve the conversion of natural gas networks, with a specific focus on the French case
International audienceCardiotoxicity in horses can lead to severe cardiac disporders and, in some cases, sudden death. A marked bradycardia can indicate a toxic origin, although clinicalvariability often complicates diagnosis. The main identified causes include the ingestion of toxic plantes and exposure to ionophore antibiotics. Diagnosis relies on clinical observation, toxicological analyses and examination of post-mortem lesions. Treatment remains primarily symptomatic, as no specific antidote is currently available.
Mastering thermal management of cooling cycles in the shaping of composite materials is essential for enhancing the quality of produced parts. In this context, Smart Element of Cooling (SEC) based on water jets in cross-flow and independently controlled flow rates have been developed to replace traditional cooling channels, which are often limited by cooling heterogeneity between the inlet and other sections of the channel. This thesis optimized the jet configuration and air/water flow ratios to improve cooling efficiency. A new hybrid numerical method was developed to quantify thermal exchanges at the cooled wall, achieving an error margin below 5 °C. The integration of the cooling modules enabled the development of a predictive model for flow control in each module, accounting for cross-effects between cooling channels, with thermal control accuracy between 2 and 3.5 °C depending on the target cooling rate. Additionally, this work defined an optimal distance between channels and proposed a general rule for selecting this spacing. Finally, stepped cooling cycles were designed to slow down the process in specific temperature ranges, promoting the crystallization of composite materials for improved mechanical properties.
