Electric Vehicles (EVs) based on Cascaded H Bridge (CHB) promise reduced consumption and improved modularity, repairability, resilience, and versatility. This study focuses on evaluating the efficiency of CHB inverters utilizing low-voltage Si MOSFETs to improve EV performance and range. Through a comprehensive system-level approach and modeling, a simulation of the CHB-based powertrain is developed and experimentally validated. Electrical and mechanical simulations are conducted separately and finally combined to streamline computation times. Subsequently, CHB-based EV is compared with two-level inverters (2LI) across different driving cycles, considering multiple sources of losses from the battery to the road. Despite increased battery losses, CHB proves reduction of consumption during urban driving cycles, making it a compelling choice for sustainable commuter vehicles.

    No full text
International audienceThis paper describes the optimal design of a miniature fiber-optic linear displacement sensor. It is characterized by its ability to measure displacements along a millimetric range with sub-micrometric resolution. The sensor consists of a triangular reflective grating and two fiber-optic probes. The measurement principle of the sensor is presented. The design of the sensor's triangular grating has been geometrically optimized by considering the step angle of the grating to enhance the sensor's resolution. The optimization method revealed a global optimum at which the highest resolution is obtained

Comparing Metrics for Evaluating 3D Map Quality in Natural Environments

International audienceIn this study, we focus on addressing the challenge of measuring the 3D-map quality in natural environments. Specifically, we consider scenarios where the map is built using a robot’s 3D-Lidar point cloud observations, with potential uncertainty in the robot localization. When considering a natural environment, such as a park or a forest, unstructured by nature, another difficulty arises: the data becomes extremely sparse. As a result, measuring the map quality becomes even more challenging. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of various metrics in measuring the 3D-map quality. Firstly, we evaluate these metrics in a controlled experimental setup, where the reconstructed map is created by progressively degrading the reference map using different degradation models. Secondly, we compare their ability to measure 3D-map quality at a local level, across various simulated environments, ranging from structured to unstructured. Finally, we conduct a qualitative comparison to demonstrate the robustness of certain metrics to noise in the robot localization. This qualitative comparison is done both in simulation and in a real world experiment. Ultimately, we synthesize the properties of these metrics and provide practical recommendations for their selection

International audienceSurface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors represent a prominent technological avenue for quantifying mechanical stress-induced deformations. Nonetheless, the integration of these Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors remains an complex challenge. Consequently, a common approach within a multitude of research involves the utilization of a adhesive formulation. However, this mode of integration continues to exhibit deficiencies in terms of measurement repeatability, particularly when confronted with harsh environments characterized by pronounced mechanical and thermal stresses. In this context, the utilization of backside reflow soldering for SAW sensor integration stands as a notably dependable alternative to epoxy bonding. In this article, we present the results of our feasibility study concerning the reflow soldering of a SAW sensor onto a binocular copper load cell to measure static strains and a ferromagnetic steel sheet to measure dynamic strains resulting from magnetostriction. To use reflow soldering, a nickel/copper electrodeposition on the ferromagnetic steel sheet was carried out, demonstrating the potential to apply this technique to various materials. The results have indicated that reflow soldering enhances the transmission of static and dynamic mechanical stresses to the SAW sensor, exhibiting a coefficient threefold greater than that achieved through simple adhesive bonding. Furthermore, this integration technique demonstrated a long-term stability of the measurement

International audienceGraphene and its composites are of primary importance, particularly in the field of energy storage. Numerous bottom-up and top-down methods have been proposed in the literature to produce these materials with enhanced physicochemical properties. Recently, an innovative and green methodology was developed based on ionizing radiation, allowing the quantitative synthesis of graphene oxide-based materials. With the aim to extend this strategy for the preparation of hybrid nanomaterials, the objective of this work was the one-pot synthesis of nanocomposites composed of reduced graphene oxide – gold nanoparticles (rGO-AuNPs) via gamma ray-induced radiolytic reduction. UV–Vis Absorption Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy were utilized to comprehensively evaluate the reduction degree of graphene oxide and the formation of gold nanoparticles. Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy were employed to obtain the morphological and topographical information on synthesized nanocomposites. Thermal properties were investigated by Thermogravimetric Analysis and electrical properties were investigated using Cyclic Voltammetry and Potentiostatic Charge and Discharge method. The results demonstrated the successful reduction of graphene oxide and gold ions through the drastic transformation of oxygen-containing functional groups and the formation of gold nanoparticles. Electrical characterization results highlighted the excellent electrical properties of radiosynthesized rGO-AuNPs composites and their great potential for supercapacitance application

The initial objective of the thesis was to develop a set of tools to build the digital twin of an AFP cell. This thesis work focused on the inspection of the draping quality by analyzing the data measured on the system. Initially, data collection, processing and fusion work enabled to build an experimental database. The placement quality is estimated by in-situ inspection methods using infrared imaging and laser triangulation. A hybrid model approach combining a physical model and machine learning was selected to predict placement quality. Finite element method was used to reproduce the AFP process and the associated singularities. Finally, the hybrid models were built by calculating the ignorance of the physical model validates the expected performance in a simple demonstrator case but appears to be perfectible to predicting the quality of automated draping.

Current control optimisation methods struggle to stabilize a base flow in the case of finite amplitude perturbations. A boundary called edge of chaos separates into two regions the phase space of a flow which transitions subcritically to turbulence. The turbulent basin of attraction incorporates the perturbations whose energy is sufficient to trigger transition to turbulence, the laminar basin of attraction is the set of initial perturbations which are relaminarized. Such situation with two coexisting local attractors can also be encountered in flow cases outside the scope of transition to turbulence. A cylinder flow at Re = 100 exhibits a globally unstable base flow and a stable limit-cycle. Two basins of attraction emerge from the local stabilization of the base flow by a linear controller optimized on the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. We seek in this study to increase the basin of attraction of the base flow. The novelty of this work lies in the choice of the functional to be optimised with control. Indeed, the optimisation targets the energy of a perturbation located on the boundary of the two basins of attraction. We consider subcritical transition to turbulence using the well-known SSP model of Waleffe, a reduced-order model of the Navier-Stokes equations with only four degrees of freedom. The control methods elaboratored in this work are effective to induce a growth of the ”laminar” basin of attraction. In the cylinder flow, the robustness of an initial controller to finite amplitude perturbations is increased in a chosen direction of the phase space.

In the context of tightening regulations, European companies are facing increasing challenges in managing physical climate risks. The CSRD directive now requires businesses to assess the impact of these risks on their operations, making precise and actionable solutions essential. This thesis aims to address these requirements by developing a Climate Vulnerability Assessment (DVC), designed to evaluate and quantify physical climate risks for each geolocated asset of a company. The methodology is based on the analysis of climate data and the calculation of climate indicators using the latest reanalysis models and climate projections. These indicators enable the development of specific metrics, such as climate anomalies and accelerations, to more accurately assess the impact of physical climate risks. The DVC thus serves as a key tool for designing adaptation strategies to climate risks, with a particular focus on flood risks.
