Occupant safety in autonomous vehicles (AVs) represents a critical concern as these vehicles progress toward SAE Level 3 autonomy, where non-driving activities become more prevalent. Despite advancements in this field, the impact of occupant activities and cognitive engagement on head-neck dynamics during emergency maneuvers remains insufficiently understood. This research hypothesizes that non-driving activities and sensory modalities significantly influence occupant physiological responses, especially in sudden braking events. To investigate this, we conducted experiments using two advanced driving simulation tools, including first a driving simulator and then a dynamic SLED system, to replicate emergency braking scenarios and evaluate occupant responses under varying cognitive and physical conditions. The first experiment utilized the Institute of Chalon-sur-Saône SAAM simulator to investigate the influence of occupant activities and auditory alerts on head-neck kinematics and muscle activation during emergency braking events. Results indicated that auditory alerts played a pivotal role in preparing occupants for deceleration, facilitating anticipatory postural adjustments and reducing head acceleration. The second experiment, using the Institut de Biomécanique Humaine Georges Charpak SLED system synchronized with a 360° virtual AV environment, confirmed these findings, demonstrating that cognitive distractions from non-driving tasks increased head acceleration and delayed muscular responses, particularly in strong braking scenarios. This study underscores the importance of integrating sensory alerts, such as auditory cues, to enhance occupant preparedness and safety in AVs. Moreover, the results highlight the necessity for adaptive AV systems that account for individual variability in occupant responses to ensure optimal protection. By employing immersive simulation technologies, this research provides valuable insights into the interaction between non-driving activities, cognitive engagement, and occupant safety, paving the way for more effective and personalized AV design strategies that can mitigate injury risk in future autonomous transportation.
Integrated-decision support system (DSS) for risk identification and mitigation in manufacturing industry for zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM): a state-of-the-art review
International audienceRisk management has always been a trend in manufacturing related literature in the era of zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM). However, a gap still exists to present a holistic viewpoint of the integration for a product and its related processes involved during decision-making in manufacturing industry. The (knowledge-driven) integrated-decision support system indicates the opportunity by integrating the product design and manufacturing processes related risks in a manufacturing industry to make better decisions at the shop foor. It further proposes a direction towards development of a decision support system framework for their respective risks’ identifcation as well as mitigation to enhance the quality, while minimizing time and cost. Over the years, risk identifcation has been considered well but risk mitigation has mostly been overlooked in the published literature. This paper scanned over a thousand papers from renowned journals published between 2005 and 2024. Currently, the evolu tion involved in the advancement of decision support tools for risk management has been reviewed by utilizing systematic literature review methodology. The study also provides a design overview, highlighting its features, pros, and cons of the existing methods which can be used for risk identifcation, prioritization, and mitigation in the development of a dynamic decision support system to aim (data-driven) zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM). Lastly, the paper discusses the current challenges and opportunities to lessen the manufacturing recalls in the industry, followed by phases of the proposed model
Nonequilibrium electronic properties and stability consequences in metallic crystalline binary alloys under ultrafast laser excitation
International audienceThis study undertakes an exhaustive exploration of properties under electron-phonon nonequilibrium for a series of ten industrially pertinent crystalline alloys, namely AlCu, AlNi, AlTi, AuCu, CuNi, CuTi, NbZr, NiTi, NiZr, and ZrCu. This comprehensive investigation encompasses electronic heat capacity, electron-phonon coupling factor, excited electron density, electronic pressure, dielectric function, refractive index, extinction coefficient, reflectivity, and optical penetration depth. Employing ab initio simulations, we meticulously analyze the nonequilibrium optoelectronic attributes inherent to these alloys change under electronic excitation across the temperature range going from 0 to 50,000 K. Additionally, to contextualize the findings, we employ classical Molecular Dynamics coupled with a Two Temperature Model simulation, notably to deliver a deep comprehension of the intricate mechanisms of the CuTi alloy ablation induced by femtosecond laser irradiation
International audienceThis study examines the domestic solid waste management system in the LATAM region, using the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador as a case study. Through the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, the study compares domestic and external recycling processes, evaluating their effects on global warming potential, fossil resource scarcity, and terrestrial ecotoxicity. The results reveal that increasing recycling rates significantly reduces environmental impacts, with domestic recycling offering slightly higher environmental benefits than external options. A demographic analysis using machine learning techniques identifies distinct patterns of waste generation across different population clusters, highlighting the need for tailored waste management strategies. The study also emphasizes the importance of accurate local data and the integration of recycling initiatives with market realities, particularly in the light of policies mandating recycled content in products like PET bottles. A sensitivity analysis of the waste recovery indicator (WRI) demonstrates the potential for substantial environmental and economic benefits with higher recycling rates. The findings suggest that, to advance towards a circular economy, Latin American cities like Guayaquil must enhance their recycling infrastructure, refine waste management policies, and focus on demographic-specific strategies. This research contributes to the broader understanding of sustainable waste management in developing regions, offering insights for future policy and infrastructure development.

Thermal resistance modeling for the optimal design of EE and E/PLT core-based planar magnetics
International audienceWith the integration of power electronic converters and components, an accurate thermal design becomes essential. Hence, precise thermal models for components are needed for their optimal design. This paper focuses on the development of an analytical model for the design thermal resistance of planar magnetic cores (PMC). Based on computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations, the PMC design thermal resistance variation is studied, according to ambient temperature and level of losses. Then, a polynomial equation is developed to model those variations and coefficients are deduced for all the sizes of PMC. This analytical model, useful for designers, is finally validated with thermal measurements on a planar transformer prototype
Behaviour of Modular Multilevel DC/DC ConverterWith DC Voltage Control Integrated in a Multi-terminal DC System Under Fault Conditions
International audienceThe development of multi-terminal DC (MTDC) networks has various challenges as interconnecting grids of different voltagesand grounding schemes, DC grid protection and power flow. DC/DC converter has emerged as the solution for interconnectingHVDC links with different specifications. In this paper, the Front-to-Front Modular Multilevel Converter (F2F-MMC) topologyis adopted for DC/DC converter, which can act as a firewall between the healthy and faulty grid during DC faults. Along with this,DC/DC converters when operated in DC voltage control mode can provide supplementary functionalities such as participating inDC grid voltage management and increasing the reliability of the system. In this study, the F2F-MMC converter is operated witha virtual resistance DC voltage controller integrated into an MTDC system. A pole-to-pole DC fault is applied on the MTDC gridand the influence of the virtual resistance controller associated with the DC/DC converter is studied for re-establishing the powerflow after DC faults
Optimizing reaction and transport fluxes in temperature gradient-driven chemical reaction-diffusion systems
Maint text: 17 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. Supplementary Information: 28 page, 5 figures. Submitted to the Physical Review ETemperature gradients represent energy sources that can be harvested to generate steady reaction or transport fluxes. Technological developments could lead to the transfer of free energy from heat sources and sinks to chemical systems for the purpose of extraction, thermal batteries, or nonequilibrium synthesis. We present a theoretical study of 1D chemical systems subjected to temperature gradients. A complete theoretical framework describes the behavior of the system induced by various temperature profiles. An exact mathematical derivation was established for a simple two-compartment model and was generalized to arbitrary reaction-diffusion systems based on numerical models. An experimental system was eventually scaled and tuned to optimize either nonequilibrium chemical transport or reaction. The relevant parameters for this description were identified; they focused on the system symmetry for chemical reaction and transport. Nonequilibrium thermodynamic approaches lead to a description analogous to electric circuits. Temperature gradients lead to the onset of a steady chemical force, which maintains steady reaction-diffusion fluxes moderated by chemical resistance. The system activity was then assessed using the entropy production rate as a measure of its dissipated power. The chemical characteristics of the system can be tuned for general optimization of the nonequilibrium state or for the specific optimization of either transport or reaction processes. The shape of the temperature gradient can be tailored to precisely control the spatial localization of active processes, targeting either precise spatial localization or propagation over large areas. The resulting temperature-driven chemical system can in turn be used to drive secondary processes into either nonequilibrium reaction fluxes or concentration gradients
