How transition to agroecology questions knowlegde production and learning dynamics
Workshop 3National audienceThe objective of this workshop is to explore, from the participant feedback, the different ways and situations, related to agroecological transition, in which the knowledge production process are questioned and even renewed. In a collective and cross analysis, we will try to overcome the general discourse on the goal to create synergies between scientific, empirical and even more traditional knowledge to precise stakes, actors and organisations for “new” or different arrangements of a diversity knowledge production process. For that, this workshop will be organized as a “fishbowl conversation” in order to facilitate exchanges within the participants bringing together researchers and stakeholders (from teaching organizations, extension services, farmers etc.) and give time for each participant to give their proper insights in reaction to others experience feedback and analysis. The session will be moderated and divided into two parts. Each part will be introduced by a short introduction proposed by a researcher in order to frame debate and give key points : 1)Role and practices of intermediary actors (such as advisors) accompanying the agroecological transition. How does it change their role and postures in supporting, teaching, creating tools and managing organizations? This sequence will explore the (re)definition of intermediary actors skills in the way they contribute to the evolution to cognitive statements and process

Drivers of adoption of agroecological practices for winegrowers and influence from policies in the province of Trento, Italy
International audienceMany agricultural practices are negatively impacting the environment and threatening the ecological foundations of the global food system. Therefore, agroecological practices are being proposed as viable and desirable alternatives. Biophysical, economic, social, and political factors, matched with farmers’ psychological attributes, may all be governing the choice of agricultural practices. Public policies can play a significant role as they can stimulate the adoption of innovative farming practices. The main objective of this research was the evaluation of farmers’ motivations for the adoption of agroecological practices in the viticulture sector in the province of Trento, Italy. A specific focus was laid on the influences from the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) measures. For the evaluation of farmers’ perceptions of their systems of practices, the Cognitive Mapping Approach for Analysing Actors’ Systems Of Practices (CMASOP) was applied. Based on information collected during in-depth interviews, Individual and Social Cognitive Maps were generated, representing the most frequently adopted agroecological practices and the major drivers of adoption of such practices, as mentioned by farmers. Drivers of adoption were categorized according to the self-determination theory of human motivations. Farmers reported that adoption of agroecological practices was mainly driven by existence of site-specific pedoclimatic conditions, followed with decreasing importance by requirements from wineries, availability of material, appreciation for aesthetics, health concerns, influence from irrigation consortia, and legal requirements, among which a local legislation for integrated pest management based on a CAP measure. Overall, results show that farmers reported to adopt agroecological practices mainly because of autonomous choices rather than coercion. Therefore, wineries and local policy-makers might incentivize the adoption of agroecological practices by promoting autonomy-supportive policies that foster farmers’ identified and intrinsic motivations
Overview of Organic Cover Crop-Based No-Tillage Technique in Europe: Farmers’ Practices and Research Challenges
International audienceCover crop mulch-based no-tillage (MBNT) production is emerging as an innovative alternative production practice in organic farming (OF) to reduce intensive soil tillage. Although European organic farmers are motivated to implement MBNT to improve soil fertility and achieve further management benefits (e.g., labor and costs savings), low MBNT practice is reported in Europe. Thus, this paper aims to understand the challenges of both farmers and researchers limiting the further adoption of MBNT in organic farming in temperate climates. The primary no-tillage (NT) practices of organic European farmers and findings of organic MBNT studies conducted in Europe are reviewed, focusing on living or mulch cover crop-based NT (LBNT or MBNT) for arable crop production. Major conclusions drawn from this review indicate consistent weed control and an establishment of best practices for cover crop management as the two main overarching challenges limiting adoption. In view of substantial gaps of knowledge on these issues, additional research should focus on cover crop selection and management (species, date of sowing) to increase cover crop biomass, particularly in warmer climates. Lastly, further research is needed to optimize cover crop termination to prevent competition for water and nutrients with cash crops, particularly in wetter northern conditions which promote vigorous cover crop growth
