Real-Time Simulation of Deformable Tactile Sensors in Robotic Grasping using Graph Neural Networks

    No full text
International audienceReal-Time Simulation of Deformable Tactile Sensors in Robotic Grasping using Graph Neural NetworksPhysical simulation plays a crucial role in the development of robotic manipulation methods, and its importance is even greater when dealing with visual tactile sensors in contact-rich scenarios. Despite years of research, simulating such sensors remains highly challenging—both in terms of the underlying physical dynamics and the rendering of tactile images. In this work, we focus exclusively on the physical simulation aspect, leaving the rendering problem outside the scope of our study.Related work on visual tactile sensor simulation can be broadly divided into two categories: (i) rigid-body simulations and (ii) soft-body simulations. Soft-body approaches offer higher realism by capturing shear forces and deformations under contact with external objects. However, they are significantly more computationally expensive and orders of magnitude slower than rigid-body simulations. In contrast, rigid-body simulations prioritize execution speed, making them suitable for scenarios requiring large-scale data generation, such as reinforcement learning. This work addresses the speed limitations of soft-body simulations by leveraging Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), which have been successfully applied to learning the physics of deformable objects. We explore the use of GNN models for simulating grasping interactions with visual tactile sensors, achieving performance gains between 100 and 1000 times faster than traditional FEM simulations, while predicting both deformation and stress on the sensor

International audienceThis paper presents for the first time a comparison between experimental measurements of Optical Beam Induced Current (OBIC) and finite element simulations on high-voltage bipolar diodes. Two peripheral protection structures were chosen: a simple MESA protection and a MESA + JTE combination. Comparable experimental and simulated results were obtained in both cases

Algebraic combinatorics around a problem in enumerative geometry

    No full text
The research presented in this habilitation thesis falls within the field of algebraic combinatorics, and consists of several original contributions. It was initially motivated by an enumerative geometry problem: namely, the explicit computation of the number of intersection points awa_w between the permutahedral variety and a Schubert subvariety XwX_w within the flag variety. The first part introduces the original problem and describes classical cohomological techniques that allow for the derivation of two distinct formulas for awa_w. The first formula, based on Klyachko’s work, establishes the strict positivity of the numbers awa_w and highlights several of their structural properties. The second formula, obtained through substantial algebraic and combinatorial developments, provides an explicit combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. The second part gathers various contributions that emerged during the resolution of the initial problem. In particular, qq-analogues of the quantities appearing in the first formula, named remixed Eulerian numbers, are introduced and studied. This rich family encompasses many classical combinatorial sequences, and the combinatorial and algebraic aspects of this qq-deformation are studied in depth. Additionally, in connection with the second formula, a variant of the theory of PP-partitions is developed, along with a theory of bilateral parking functions which sheds light on certain combinatorial aspects of the formula. The third and final part focuses on quasisymmetric polynomials, an important family playing a central role in the derivation of the second formula for awa_w. A new operator-based approach is introduced, simplifying and extending classical methods for studying these polynomials. This construction is directly inspired by the theory of symmetric polynomials, with forest polynomials playing a role analogous to that of Schubert polynomials

    No full text

This PhD thesis investigates the asymptotic behaviour of a class of random walks in random environments, namely the random walks in Dirichlet environment (RWDE), on ℤᵈ. A random walk in random environment on a graph is a Markov chain on this graph whose transition probabilities at each vertex (the so-called environment) have been sampled randomly according to a given probability distribution. The Dirichlet distribution on environments arises naturally as the mixing distribution of the environment of a directed edge-reinforced random walk, and it enjoys a notable property of statistical invariance under time reversal. We are particularly interested in trapping phenomena, due to regions where the walk remains localised during a long time. In the first chapter of this thesis, we establish a stable limit theorem describing the second-order fluctuations of the subdiffusive RWDE in dimension d≥3 when Sznitman’s condition (T) is satisfied. This result complements that of Poudevigne about the asymptotic behaviour of subballistic RWDE. Under our hypotheses, the fluctuations of the walk are driven entirely by trapping, and, more precisely, by the effect of a single, very deep trap that the walk visits only a few times. The second chapter of this thesis concerns a new identity, which we refer to as the product-ratio identity. This identity essentially gives the conditional distribution of the ratio of hitting probabilities between two fixed vertices, conditionally on the product of those two probabilities. It follows from a mixing property, obtained by comparison with a certain vertex-reinforced jump process: if the transition probabilities of the Dirichlet environment are multiplied by random variables with a well-chosen distribution, the resulting environment remains distributed as a Dirichlet environment. In addition to the proof of the product-ratio identity, the second chapter presents the first two consequences that we can draw from it. On the one hand, this new identity provides a way to estimate the fluctuations of the stationary measure for the RWDE on two-dimensional toruses. From these estimates, we derive criteria for the existence of an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure for the process of the environments viewed from a particle describing a RWDE on ℤ². For a recurrent random walk, such an invariant probability measure cannot exist, as the fluctuations of the stationary measure on the torus blow up as the size of the torus increases. In contrast, if the walk is ballistic and satisfies condition (T), we can construct such an invariant probability measure, because the fluctuations of the stationary measure on the torus are uniformly bounded. Similar results are derived for an accelerated version of the RWDE, whose acceleration compensates for the trapping phenomenon. All of that lends strong support to a new conjecture about the regimes in which there is or is not an invariant measure from the point of view of the particle for the RWDE on the plane. On the other hand, the study of the product-ratio identity in dimension 1 leads to a discrete version of the Matsumoto-Yor property for Brownian motion. While similar properties have been obtained in the context of integrable probability, the approach presented here is entirely different. The final chapter is based on a ongoing work, which adapts a method originally introduced by Balázs, Rassoul-Agha and Seppäläinen in order to derive a large deviations principle for a directed version of the RWDE. An alternative proof of their result can be adapted to the case of RWDE on ℤ and gives a new way to find, in a completely self-contained way, an already known result: the explicit expression of the large deviations rate function for the sequence of hitting times of the positive integers.

International audienceIn order to investigate the paralleling of VHF power converters, this paper describes the implementation of Class E2 parallel resonant DC-DC converter, which is a suitable converter topology for this analysis as it can maintain ZVS over a wide load range. Consequently, an 8W output power prototype with 83% efficiency and switching frequency of 10MHz was characterized and demonstrated a good correlation with simulation. Furthermore, in order to investigate the topology component tolerance robustness, 2 more converters were characterized. Performance comparisons of all the converters lead to the conclusion that this topology can be a good candidate for paralleling VHF converters as it exhibits power source behavior at the output

International audienceDigital hydraulics is a field focused on improving the energy efficiency of hydraulic regulation systems. This work focuses on three-port SIHCs (Switched Inertial Hydraulic Converters) and presents the study of a hydraulic fundamental unit called SIU, analogous to the half-bridge of an electrical converter. This unit, found in multiple SIHC architectures, simplifies the approach to these systems by leveraging the SIU topology to classify different families of SIHCs. Additionally, this unit enabled the development of a new SIHC architecture operating in four quadrants (reversible flow rate and capable of modulating the output pressure relative to the input pressure) : the Hydraulic Buck-Boost Converter.

Optimal sizing of isolated photovoltaic-hydrogen microgrids using covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy considering real-gas modeling of hydrogen

    No full text
International audienceThis paper investigates the application of the Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) to the optimal sizing of isolated photovoltaic-hydrogen microgrids. Accurate sizing of system components—particularly photovoltaic (PV) panels and hydrogen energy storage systems (HESS)—is critical to ensuring cost-effectiveness, energy autonomy, and operational reliability. This study introduces an advanced HESS model based on real gas behavior, offering improved physical realism over conventional ideal-gas approximations. While metaheuristic optimization methods such as genetic algorithms (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are widely used in microgrid design, Evolution Strategies (ES) remain significantly underutilized, despite their strong performance on complex, high-dimensional problems. CMA-ES, in particular, requires minimal parameter tuning and adapts effectively to non-convex, multimodal landscapes. A comparative evaluation of five evolutionary algorithms including 4 ES variants shows that CMA-ES avoids premature convergence, unlike GA, and achieves a 26 % improvement in final fitness value, demonstrating superior robustness to difficult problems and solution quality. While the No Free Lunch Theorem reminds us that no algorithm is universally optimal, this work highlights CMA-ES as a highly usable, plug-and-play tool with excellent performance across a wide range of problem types—making it especially suitable for real-world microgrid design applications
