Coastal hydrodynamics at the sub-Antarctic Possession Island (Crozet archipelago) inferred from bedform structures and sediment properties
International audienceWithin the Southern Ocean, sub-Antarctic regions are anticipated to face significant impacts related to climate change. The alteration of the circulation and properties of the water masses is expected to have widespread impacts on sub-Antarctic nearshore marine ecosystems. Satellite data provides valuable insights into the global ocean circulation but information on fine-scale, local coastal dynamics remain limited and imprecise for the isolated sub-Antarctic territories. The present study aims to infer coastal hydrodynamic processes from the analysis of bedforms using seafloor imagery and sediment samples at two sites located on the eastern coast of Ile de la Possession (Crozet archipelago), Baie du Marin and Crique du Sphinx. Sedimentological and mineralogical analyses conducted on samples have revealed a typical volcanic nature of sediments, with a high proportion of pyroxenes, olivines and large plagioclases. Sediments were characterized by low carbonate and nitrogen contents, suggesting that organic matter is either rapidly depleted by microbial degradation, consumed by benthic detritus feeders, or the lithogenic material transported away from the coastal production area by local currents. Sedimentary structures analyses suggested that ocean circulation at Baie du Marin and Crique du Sphinx is influenced by residual flows that are likely driven by wind and ocean circulation at regional scales and that may result as well from tidal rectification by topography between Ile de la Possession and Ile de l'Est. This study provides a first attempt to analyze local, fine-scale hydrodynamic processes occurring along the eastern coast of Ile de la Possession and link these field observations to large-scale, regional processes formerly studied in the region

Relationships between the concentration of particulate organic nitrogen and the inherent optical properties of seawater in oceanic surface waters
International audienceAbstract. The concentration of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) in seawater plays a central role in ocean biogeochemistry. The limited availability of PON data obtained directly from in situ sampling methods hinders development of a thorough understanding and characterization of spatiotemporal variability in PON and associated source and sink processes within the global ocean. Measurements of inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater, which can be performed over extended temporal and spatial scales from various in situ and remote-sensing platforms, represent a valuable approach to address this gap. We present the analysis of relationships between PON and particulate IOPs, including the absorption coefficients of total particulate matter, ap(λ); phytoplankton, aph(λ); and non-algal particles, ad(λ), as well as the particulate backscattering coefficient, bbp(λ). This analysis is based on an extensive field dataset of concurrent measurements of PON and particulate IOPs in the near-surface oceanic waters and shows that reasonably strong relationships hold across a range of diverse oceanic and coastal marine environments. The coefficients ap(λ) and aph(λ) show the best ability to serve as PON proxies over a broad range of PON from open-ocean oligotrophic to coastal waters. The particulate backscattering coefficient can also provide a good proxy for PON in open-ocean environments. The relationships presented here demonstrate a promising means to assess PON from optical measurements conducted from spaceborne and airborne remote-sensing platforms and in situ autonomous platforms. In support of this potential application, we provide the relationships between PON and spectral IOPs at light wavelengths consistent with those used by satellite ocean color sensors
Innovations and Environmental Benefits in the Agri-food Sector: An Empirical Study Based on the 2020 CIS Survey
Cyclodextrin-based materials for pulmonary delivery : Insights and challenges
International audienceCyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides primarily used as excipients in the formulation of drugs, including those intended for pulmonary delivery. CDs have gained increased attention for their use as drug solubilizers. The beneficial role they play in the formulation of drugs intended for lung targeting has received particular attention in recent years, along with the potential benefits this route offers for achieving systemic effects. Hence, various CDs based materials have been considered in literature including CD/drug inclusion complexes, polymerized CDs and nanosponges, metal-organic frameworks, CDs in proliposomes, and others. The investigation of CDs as active agents is also considered in literature for the treatment of lungs diseases. The literature provides a large range of information on the manufacturing of CD-based materials for pulmonary delivery, the characterization of the obtained formulations, their suitability for lung deposition, the pharmacokinetics of the drugs when loaded in a particular formulation, and the resulting biological effects, yet the challenges of their clinical translation remain to be addresse
