A HCN terahertz molecular laser pumped by a QCL

How Ceramic Containers Shape Affects Wine Chemistry pH Dynamics
International audienceCeramic vessels used in winemaking can significantly interact with the wine itself. This interaction is driven by the wine's acidity affecting the ceramic material. This process leads to: (1) the release of various elements from the ceramic into the wine; and (2) a potential change in the wine's pH. These interactions are crucial for winemakers to monitor, as they can influence the wine's final taste and stability. Understanding the precise mechanisms at play allows for greater control over the aging process. By carefully managing ceramic exposure, winemakers can enhance desired characteristics and mitigate undesirable ones. Ultimately, this knowledge contributes to crafting higher-quality wines with distinct profiles. The degree of these effects is influenced by the specific ceramic composition and the hydraulic ratio (ρ), defined as the wine's volume relative to the ceramic surface area in contact. Building upon the Avrami law, which models material dissolution kinetics, we introduce an approach to model the evolution of wine pH over time as a function of the ρ ratio. This analysis offers valuable insights into understanding and potentially predicting the dynamic pH changes within wine as it interacts with ceramic vessels. This research holds relevance for optimizing the use of ceramic materials in various winemaking contexts
The Shi variety corresponding to an affine Weyl group
International audienceAbstract Let be an irreducible Weyl group and its affine Weyl group. In this article we show that there exists a bijection between and the integral points of an affine variety, denoted , which we call the Shi variety of . In order to do so, we use Jian‐Yi Shi's characterization of alcoves in affine Weyl groups. We then study this variety further. We introduce a new representation of , called the ‐representation, and we highlight combinatorial and geometrical properties of the irreducible components of via this representation. Parabolic Sphere Tracing Of Signed Distance Fields For Old Glass Modelling And Rendering
International audienceWe present a method for modeling and rendering irregular and heterogeneous glass objects, with a specific emphasis on stained glass windows and window works often encountered in architecture from middle age to 18th century. The artisanal production of sheet glass results in glass panels displaying a vast variety of surface and volume irregularities like bubbles, irregular surface or smoothly varying refractive index, all of which contribute to the specific visual aspect of old glass. We propose to account for all the aforementioned effects in a unified framework based on signed distance functions and an analytic solution of the ray tracing equations on tetrahedral volume elements. We demonstrate how to construct an unbiased estimator for the transmitted lighting produced by such panels by using Fermat's principle and results from seismic ray theory. We use texture coordinates to map arbitrary sections of a complex glass panel onto the individual faces of a mesh, allowing the modeling and rendering of complex 3-dimensional objects composed of colored glass facets such as stained glass windows
Une intervention de littératie physique de longue durée pour améliorer les indicateurs de santé et les niveaux d'activité physique chez les adolescents en surpoids et obèses
International audienceBackground The aim of this study was to present the effects of a long-duration Physical Literacy intervention on the healthof overweight and obese adolescents.Methods CAPACITES 64 was a quasi-experimental study of 14 overweight and obese adolescents. The intervention wasconducted for 15 months, with two measurement times.Results The intervention significantly increased the overall Physical Literacy score (Δ = + 7.6 points; p < 0.05). The%Skeletal Muscle Mass (Δ = + 3.5%; p < 0.05) and the VO2peak(Δ = + 3.4 ml.min.kg−1; p < 0.05) increase significantly,also. Decreases in Z-score Body Mass Index (Δ = -0.5; p < 0.05) and %Body Fat (Δ = -6.1; p < 0.05) were observed. Nosignificant effect on Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity is identified (Δ = -0.2 min.day−1; p = 0.09).Conclusions This study revealed that a long-duration Physical Literacy intervention had a positive effect on health indicatorsand prevented a decrease in the level of physical activity in overweight and obese adolescents
A Normality Conjecture on Rational Base Number Systems
The rational base number system, introduced by Akiyama, Frougny, and Sakarovitch in 2008, is a generalization of the classical integer base number system. Within this framework two interesting families of infinite words emerge, called minimal and maximal words. We conjecture that every minimal and maximal word is normal over an appropriate subalphabet. To support this conjecture, we present extensive numerical experiments that examine the richness threshold and the discrepancy of these words. We also discuss the implications that the validity of our conjecture would have for several long-standing open problems, including the existence of -numbers (Mahler, 1968) and -numbers (Flatto, 1992), the existence of triple expansions in rational base (Akiyama, 2008), and the Collatz-inspired '4/3 problem' (Dubickas and Mossinghoff, 2009)

International audienceCopper and carbonates can play an important role for NO SCR by CO under oxidative and wet conditions towards promoting lower temperature of CO oxidation and higher N 2 selectivity and activity.• The Redox treatments influenced Copper and Carbonates species differently:The redox CO-CO 2 promoted the formation of additional active surface carbonates (mainly polydentate) shifting the N 2 yield to lower temperature. Additionally, Cu 2 O phase was detected promoting enhanced CO oxidation.The redox CO-O 2 facilitated the formation of CoAl 2 O 4 spinel structure with the removal of carbonates and enhanced Copper cobalt interaction leading to the highest selectivity towards N 2 Yield for CoCuAl Air R CO-O 2 sample.</p
Unravelling the drivers of marine biodiversity across the Phanerozoic
International audienceUnderstanding the potential drivers of spatial-temporal patterns in biodiversity has been a central tenet in biogeography and palaeontology for decades. More than 30 hypotheses have been proposed, including null models and theories based on environmental controls, energy, area, speciation/extinction dynamics, time, habitat features, ecological niches and biotic interactions. Yet, no consensus has been reached, and question remains whether a primary cause explains temporal trends and spatial patterns in biodiversity such as the latitudinal biodiversity gradient. Here we combine a macroecological model with global climate simulations to show that the niche-environment interaction may explain changes in global marine biodiversity and associated large-scale spatial patterns during the Phanerozoic (last 541 million years). We show that the niche-environment interaction imposed both a species carrying capacity and spatial constraints on marine biodiversity that defined the latitudinal biodiversity gradient. Although our model suggests that climate modulated the niche-environment interaction, hence spatial biodiversity patterns, it also demonstrates that palaeogeographical evolution imposed changes in shallow-water area, continental fragmentation and the location of landmasses relative to climatic belts and may have constituted the fundamental driver of changes in global marine biodiversity at the geological time scale.
