Study in the atmospheric simulation chamber CHARME of the reactivity of monoterpenes first-generation oxidation products : Implications on air quality and climate
International audienceBiogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are emitted by terrestrial vegetation, with global emissionsaround 1000 Tg/year (Wang et al., 2024). Monoterpenes, making up 15% of BVOCs, are highly reactive and contribute to the formation of gaseous oxidation products, Secondary organic aerosols (SOA), and tropospheric ozone. However, the reaction mechanisms and SOA formation of first-generation terpene oxidation products (FGTOPs) remain poorly understood. FGTOPs like nopinone, ketolimonene and pinonaldehyde have been detected in low concentrations during field campaigns 5.0-9.0 ng.m- 3,likely due to rapid degradation by oxidants and photolysis (El Dib et al., 2022; Hellén et al., 2004). This study provides the first detailed kinetic and mechanistic analysis of two FGTOPs, myrtenal andketolimonene species formed from the oxidation of α- pinene and limonene, respectively, with the nitrate radicals (NO₃). Experiments were conducted in a 9.2 m³ simulation chamber (CHARME) in Dunkerque, France, under controlled conditions (i.e. room temperature (293 ± 2 K), low relative humidity (RH < 1%), and atmospheric pressure). Reactant and product concentrations were monitored using proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flightmass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) and aerosol measurements were conducted with a scanning mobilityparticle sizer (SMPS).The rate coefficients for the reactions of myrtenal and ketolimonene with NO3 radicals determined using the relative rate method are (3.4 ± 0.3) × 10-14 and (1.05 ± 0.24) × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 respectively. The rate coefficient for ketolimonene is consistent with the literature (Atkinson & Aschmann, 1993), while myrtenal’s rate constant has been determined for the first time. According to the kinetic measurements the lifetimes of FGTOPs with respect to their reaction with NO3 can be estimated. Myrtenal has a lifetime of 32 hours with NO3 during nighttime, much more reactive to its daytime loss by NO3 radicals (~34 days), but two orders of magnitude slower than its precursor, α-pinene. Ketolimonene has a much shorter lifetime of 6 minutes, 26 times shorter than its daytime loss by NO3 radicals (~2.6 hours). This suggests that ketolimonene reaction with NO₃ is a significant atmospheric sink, comparable to its precursor, limonene. The SOA formation potential from the reactions of myrtenal with NO3 radicals has also been investigated and a maximum SOA yield of 32% has been measured. This formation is described by a one-product gas/particle partitioning absorption model, with a stoichiometric coefficient αi = 0.36 ± 0.02 and an equilibrium constant K = 0.04 ± 0.01 m3/µg. This indicates that this reaction, being studied for the first time, is a significant contributor to SOA formation in the atmosphere
Application of the METAL theory to reconstruct spatio-temporal changes in biodiversity through deep time
International audienceThis talk presents the MacroEcological Theory on the Arrangement of Life (METAL) and shows how models originating from it can be applied to explore changes in biodiversity through deep time. METAL posits that biodiversity is strongly influenced by climate/environment in a deterministic manner (1). The theory proposes that the niche-environment interaction is fundamental and enables us to predict and unify (i) at the species level local changes in abundance, species phenology, and biogeographic shifts, and (ii) at the community level, the arrangement of biodiversity in space and time as well as long-term community/ecosystem shifts, including regime shifts. In the contemporary period, the theory has been applied to address key questions such as why terrestrial species outnumber marine species despite life origins in the ocean, and why biodiversity peaks at mid-latitudes in the marine realm but at the equator on land. Recently, the framework has been used to revisit the equilibrium theory of island biogeography (2). This theory offers a way to make testable ecological and biogeographical predictions to understand how life is organized, and how it responds to global environmental changes. We will show examples of application of the theory for the Phanerozoic and especially the Cambrian, Ordovician, Neogene and Quaternary

Mobile phones and app use could foster independent producer networks, improve value chain structuring and boost the sector's economic value. Agricultural producers are now being targeted by a growing number of providers of “digital services”, in the form of apps developed by tech and agritech start-ups. However, apps developed specifically for agricultural producers have met with mixed success. What lessons can be drawn from this mixed bag of results, and what will it take for digitalization to truly serve producers and facilitate the transition to socially, economically and environmentally sustainable practices

One-level densities in families of Grössencharakters associated to CM elliptic curves
International audienceWe study the low-lying zeros of a family of -functions attached to the CM elliptic curves , for each odd and square-free integer . Writing the -function of as for the appropriate Grössencharakter of conductor , the family is defined as the family of -functions attached to the Grössencharakters , where for each integer , denotes the primitive character inducing . We observe that of the functions in have negative root number. This makes the symmetry type of the family (unitary, symplectic or orthogonal) somewhat mysterious, as none of the symmetry types would lead to this proportion. We give an asymptotic expression for the one-level density in the family of -functions in with conductor at most , and find that breaks down into two natural subfamilies; namely, a symplectic family ( for even) and an orthogonal family ( for odd). For odd, is in fact a subfamily of the automorphic forms of fixed level , and even weight , and this larger family also has orthogonal symmetry. Finally, we compute explicit lower order terms in decreasing powers of for each case

International audienceBoth private homes and public spaces are plagued by violence. Victims then dream of revenge and vengeance against the perpetrators. But what proportionate punishments should be imposed, given both the need for effectiveness and the necessary respect for the humanism of our Western society? Thinkers and politicians constantly contradict each other.
