Unwanted vibrations pose a major challenge in many industrial applications. This research addresses a specific vibration control problem, focusing on the reduction of vibrations in a targeted region of a smart structure. The primary objective is to minimize the effects of a disturbance over a defined frequency range. The mechanical system under study is a plate equipped with two piezoelectric elements, used to illustrate the experimental results. This setup is designed to reduce vibrations generated by a localized mechanical excitation produced by a vibrating shaker. The study evaluates control effectiveness first with a single piezoelectric element and then with both elements simultaneously. Several technical challenges arise. The first concerns the use of the SSA (Self-Sensing Actuator) configuration, where each piezoelectric element is used simultaneously as a sensor and an actuator. Achieving the required level of vibration reduction in this configuration involves several difficulties. In particular, the actuation voltage must be applied to the same terminals used to extract the sensing signal, which introduces a direct feedthrough of the electrical signal. Combined with the control signal, this adds additional actuation noise inherent to all real systems. In feedback control, this polluted measurement signal reduces the signal/noise ratio when used by the controller, which is crucial for the proper operation of the closed-loop system. An electrical balancing bridge is implemented to compensate for the component related to the control signal, enabling the extraction of a measurement signal that accurately reflects the actual behavior of the structure. Nevertheless, this compensation is not perfect, and a residual error remains. This error can first be estimated analytically and then identified more precisely during system modeling, explicitly including the corresponding direct term. The influence of this residual error on system behavior, particularly regarding stability and performance, is thoroughly analyzed. A black-box identification modeling approach is then adopted based on experimental data. A model reduction procedure is applied over the frequency range of interest. All relevant sources of error, arising from both the balancing circuit and the modeling process, are considered in the analysis of system stability and performance. An H∞ control criterion is defined to ensure robustness and stability of the closed-loop system while reducing the effect of disturbances. An original controller architecture is proposed, allowing additional numerical compensation of the residual direct error. The controller is divided into two parts: a dynamic part, independent of the direct error, and a static part, adaptable to this error. The effectiveness of the control is validated through both numerical simulations and experiments on the experimental bench. Finally, this methodology is extended to a MIMO system with two piezoelectric elements in the SSA configuration, accounting for the coupling between the elements to achieve global vibration reduction. Two H∞ MIMO control strategies, centralized and structured, are developed and compared, with the structured version imposing constraints on the controller’s structure and order. A third strategy, based on the previously developed SISO methodology, is also included for comparative analysis. Simulation and experimental results are evaluated for each piezoelectric element, and the relative reduction rate is calculated in closed-loop compared to open-loop.

International audienceThe comprehensive analysis of the processes involved in discharges requires theunderstanding of the associated electric field behavior. We here demonstrate thepotentialities of a pigtailed electro-optic (EO) probe to perform the experimentalassessment of the transients associated to discharges in several configurations. The EOprobe is entirely dielectric and millimeter sized, thus leading to very low invasivemeasurements and allowing near field analysis. Moreover, its frequency bandwidthexceeds several gigahertz and its measurement dynamics allows measurement from lessthan 1 V/m up to the breakdown field. All these properties make the EO probe suitablefor real time characterization of discharges. We firstly compare the temporal behavior of the field of corona and dielectric barrierdischarges, both induced by a AC voltage. In these configurations, the voltage isdelivered by a tuneable high voltage transformer ( in the 10kV range) and applied oncentimeter sized discharge configuration. Specific signatures of discharges have beenidentified and are compared to simultaneous measurements using a high frequencycurrent transformer and UHF antenna. The second experimental campaign concerns single shot artificial lightnings induced bythree lightning rods. The single pulsed voltage is delivered thanks to a Marx generator (1MV–50 kJ) and applied to an upper electrode consisting in a 2 m diameter circularplateau separated by 1m of air from the top of the lightning rod. The behavior of theelectric field at the top of the lightning rod is analyzed as a function of voltagemagnitude and polarity. Indeed, their non linear electric field generation with respectthe the applied voltage exhibit specific figures. Advantages and limitations ofthe vectorial EO probe, will be explained. A lot of experimental results, concerning verylocalized partial discharge as well as meter sized leader discharges, will be presentedduring the conference and will be analyzed.AcknowledgmentThis work has been supported financially within the program: France Relance.

International audienceThe acceleration of global warming is increasing the frequency of major gravitational events, making it increasingly necessary to monitor their precursors (minor events). While in situ sensors (interferometers, seismometers, etc.) are reliable, their large-scale deployment remains limited by logistical and economic factors. Terrestrial time-lapse cameras, which are low-cost and easily interpretable, offer an interesting alternative. However, their automatic processing remains challenging due to drastic changes in appearance and lighting conditions.Recent advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence now make it possible to envision robust automation for the detection of serac and rock falls. In this presentation, we will review the state of the art of various change detection methods available in the literature, as applied to gravitational events. Given the low frequency of these hazards and the difficulty of annotation (requiring expertise and time-consuming analysis), particular attention will be paid to weakly supervised and/or zero-shot learning, which are more realistic in our application context. While the latest change detection methods based on foundation models are impressive for satellite data and autonomous driving, they show serious limitations with our data. In contrast, deep matching methods appear to be a more relevant option. This study highlights the current challenges in rockfall detection and outlines research perspectives that could be pursued to address the problem.L’accélération du réchauffement climatique intensifie l’occurrence d’événements gravitaires majeurs, rendant la surveillance de leurs précurseurs (événements mineurs) de plus en plus nécessaire.

A numerical model of coupled phloem-xylem flows for dynamic long-distance transport in trees

    No full text
In trees, the vascular system is dual in structure and func)on. Sap flows upwards in the xylem to hydrate )ssues and refill reserves from transpira)on loss. In the leaves, some of the water recirculates into the phloem and sap, loaded with photoassimilates, flows downwards to supply )ssues with carbohydrates. Flow and counter-flow occur in physically separated but hydraulically connected pathways. Water exchanges take place all along them. Understanding the en)re system and its subprocesses is essen)al to precisely quan)fy the carbon-water fluxes at the soil-atmosphere interface. That understanding is also key to predict the func)onal limits of vascular transport and, when dysfunc)on occurs, how it will impact the vitality of plant communi)es subject to drought events and foliar pathogen outbreaks. Here we present an integrated, spa)ally explicit model of phloem-xylem transport. The model implements Münch's osmo-regulated pressure flow hypothesis for phloem transport and cohesion-tension for xylem transport. The changes of phloem pressure, carbohydrate concentra)on and xylem pressure over )me are governed by three coupled nonlinear par)al differen)al equa)ons. Sap flow velocity, volume flow and the amount of shrinkage and swelling are calculated as derived variables. The model uses a special-purpose numerical scheme and can simulate response to dynamic forcing such as the diurnal pamerns of phloem loading and transpira)on. Unlike in other models, transport equa)ons are solved for a surface and account for tangen)al movement of water and carbohydrates. Phloem and xylem are treated as elasto-porous media with distributed hydraulic and mechanical proper)es. We also present a semi-automated image processing method to calculate the theore)cal hydraulic conduc)vity of phloem and xylem )ssues based on their anatomy. Key hydraulic characteris)cs are given for the phloem of juvenile Pinus radiata D. Don

Continuous Emission Ultrasound for M-Mode Imaging Based on an Inverse Problem Approach

    No full text
International audienceConventionally, ultrasound imaging techniques rely on pulse-echo (PE) acquisitions. PE paradigm provides a straightforward access to the in-depth tissue structure, though limited for ultrafast phenomenon imaging. The first limitation is the pulse repetition frequency, directly proportional to the imaging framerate. Secondly, because of the small duty cycle, every region of the imaged medium does not produce any echo during most of the acquisition tile.Continuous emission ultrasound imaging (CEUI) has been recently investigated to tackle these constraints for M-Mode and B-Mode imaging, relying on an uninterrupted insonification of the medium.Resulting recorded signals become, compared to PE, a "chaotic" spatio-temporal mixture of contribution of different regions in the field-of-view, backscattered at different times, and potentially received at the same time. Until now, to retrieve an image, proposed methods relied on a spatio-temporal dependant pulse compression for each estimated pixel, by looking for the signature of a short segment of the emitted waveform, in the received echoes. Repeating this process for a set of emitted segments enables to obtain images with a temporal resolution up to three orders of magnitude higher compared to ultrafast US imaging strategies with PE.This paper proposes a novel way to retrieve M-Mode images with continuous emission in order to tackle the tradeoff between the gain in temporal resolution with its significant contrast degradation. An inverse problem approach enables to improve image consistency by estimating jointly all pixels from a same column of the M-Mode and enforcing temporal coherence between successive estimated states of the medium

Riverscapes.

This work, which constitutes the original essay of my Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR), provides a comprehensive assessment of my scientific journey since the PhD – and even earlier – marked by the discovery of fluvial hydrosystems and a number of disciplines that study them. Its purpose is to assert a scientific identity, that of an eco-geographer of riverscapes, and to outline a future trajectory oriented towards a better understanding, preservation, and management of fluvial environments. The manuscript is divided into two complementary parts. The first part illustrates and discusses the riverscape approach – through notions such as hydrosystem, complexity, heterogeneity, and spatio-temporal scales – and shows how it fits within French and international biophysical geography, in relation to my own trajectory. The second part addresses the approaches and methods applied to the study of fluvial landscapes, built upon the triptych of biophysical geography–landscape ecology–remote sensing. Four hypotheses guide the analysis: an integrated landscape approach, consideration of the behavioral dimension of rivers, multi-scale comparisons, and the role of hydrosystems as sentinels. Overall, the work advocates for collective and interdisciplinary research, in which understanding the links between structures, functions, and dynamics of fluvial hydrosystems makes it possible to address, in a systemic way, the health of riverscapes and associated socio-ecosystems in the face of global environmental change.

Smart Electromagnetic Inerter-Based Vibration Absorber With Active Control for Enhanced Stability

    No full text
International audienceThe design of mechanical inerter-based vibration absorbers faces major challenges, particularly in accurately measuring the relative acceleration between the structure and the absorber. This article presents a novel solution to this issue using active control techniques. By utilizing a voice coil as a sensor, the relative velocity is captured and differentiated to estimate the relative acceleration. Two additional voice coils act as actuators, creating the inertance effect. The close placement of these actuators and sensors enables collocated feedback, ensuring unconditional stability. Experimental and simulation studies validate this innovative smart system through a ground-based absorber, showcasing two scenarios: (1) pure inertance feedback and (2) feedback laws that combine stiffness, damping, and inertance to boost performance. The results confirm superior stability compared to conventional methods, underlining the effectiveness of this smart device in vibration control
