In the context of climate change, urban densification, and the redevelopment of riverbanks—all of which are leading to increased public use of these areas—the risk of drowning in urban rivers is likely to rise. This thesis proposes an interdisciplinary approach to drowning risk, applied to the Lyon metropolitan area. It combines spatial analyses, in situ experiments, and socio-geographic surveys, with the aim of improving scientific knowledge and operational tools for rescue and prevention.Three main research questions structure the work. The first focuses on the epidemiology of drowning. A database of incidents recorded between 2015 and 2022, built from operational archives and environmental data, is used to identify victim profiles, high-risk locations and times, and to understand the social, spatial, and hydrological risk factors associated with these events. The second question addresses the rescue of drowning victims. It explores the uncertainties related to underwater victim location using two complementary methods: (i) a protocol combining a video-questionnaire survey and geoinformation tools to assess errors and uncertainties in eyewitness reports provided to rescue teams; (ii) a series of drift tests conducted in real conditions with a weighted mannequin to characterize the physical factors influencing a body’s trajectory in a river. The third question examines the tensions between swimming prevention and prohibition in river environments. A quantitative survey, designed with a prospective outlook toward 2030, explores expectations, needs, and desires related to urban river swimming, as well as the conditions for its implementation.Using tools from geography, epidemiology, river hydraulics, and cognitive sciences, this research contributes to developing an epidemiology still largely unexplored for this topic at the local scale, improving our understanding of the movement of bodies in water, formalizing uncertainties in rescue operations, and examining local prevention policies. It opens concrete perspectives for the integrated management of swimming and drowning risk in urban environments, at the intersection of scientific analysis and public action.
International audienceThe classical Birkhoff--von Neumann (BvN) decomposition expresses a given doubly stochastic matrix as a convex combination of permutation matrices. We investigate the BvN decomposition of symmetric doubly stochastic matrices where the permutation matrices in the decomposition are also symmetric, called SymBvN decomposition. This decomposition is not always possible. Two pioneering theoretical works [Padberg and Wolsey, Math. Program., 29 (1984); Vazirani, arXiv:2010.05984, 2020] establish the conditions under which such a decomposition is possible using graph terminology. We propose a practical algorithm by combining these two works. A simple transformation converts any given symmetric doubly stochastic matrix, with possibly nonzero diagonal elements, to be the adjacency matrix of an edge-weighted undirected graph. The adjacency matrix of the resulting graph admits a SymBvN decomposition if and only if the given matrix does so.The practicality of the proposed algorithm allows us to implement it, release its source code, andreport the first set of experiments ever performed for the SymBvN decomposition. Our experiments suggest that the proposed algorithm is as effective as the state-of-the-art algorithms for the classical BvN decomposition.
This thesis is part of the ANR project AAA – Augmented Artwork Analysis, which aims to develop tools for the assisted interpretation of artistic images. The project is also rooted in a broader reflection on the genealogy of forms in art history. The work fits within the development of a system for representing, querying, navigating, and visualizing images, with the goal of designing an interactive content-based image retrieval tool. This tool integrates deep neural networks to enable the exploration of large artistic corpora. This thesis focuses on the development of an interactive system for searching artistic images based on visual content, using deep neural networks to explore large corpora. This thesis proposes a new approach to the study of artistic forms using computer vision tools. Recent advances in object detection and recognition can be used to automatically identify specific patterns, shapes or elements within large corpora of images. These automated analyses could then yield visual relationships that have hitherto been difficult to access by manual observation, paving the way for a renewal of methods in art history. It is in this context that we became interested in the classification of works by genre, style and artist and the detection of objects in paintings. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a content-based image search tool for a corpus ranging from the 15th to the 20th centuries. To tackle this problem, we have implemented two complementary approaches. The first is to use classification models to recognise the artistic genres of the paintings. This step guides the search by matching paintings belonging to the same genre while remaining visually close. The second approach is based on the detection of objects in the paintings and the geometric and topological relationships that link them. The aim is to analyse the work and bring together similar works. Particular attention has been paid to the faces in the paintings, and in particular to the direction of gaze of the figures depicted. These two methodological approaches make it possible to cross-reference the results obtained by the algorithms with hypotheses derived from art history, and pave the way for a large-scale visual exploration of artistic forms.
Adherent cells sustain membrane tension gradients independently of migration
International audienceAbstract Tension propagates in lipid bilayers over hundreds of microns within milliseconds, seemingly precluding the formation of tension gradients. Nevertheless, plasma membrane tension gradients have been reported in migrating cells and along growing axons. Here, we show that the mechanosensitive, fluorescent membrane probe Flipper-TR visualizes membrane tension gradients in artificial and cellular membranes. Images of tension gradients allow their quantitative characterization, showing that they are long-ranged and linear in all migratory adherent cells. Using this tool, we unexpectedly reveal that tension gradients also exist in non-migrating adherent cells while they are absent in non-adherent migrating cells. This suggests that actomyosin forces can generate tension gradients even in non-moving cells, but that adhesion to a substrate is needed to sustain these gradients. Treatment of cells with drugs perturbing actomyosin show that branched actin increases tension, creating gradients. Furthermore, specific adhesion mediated by clathrin plaques colocalizes with regions of low tension, and chemical disruption of clathrin plaques strongly affect tension gradients. Altogether, our results show that the combined action of actomyosin and adhesion forces create tension gradients in the plasma membrane of adherent cells, even the ones not migrating

Enhancing temporal learning in recurrent spiking networks for neuromorphic applications
International audienceTraining Recurrent Spiking Neural Networks (RSNNs) with binary spikes for tasks of extended time scales presents a challenge due to the amplified vanishing gradient problem during back propagation through time. This paper introduces three crucial elements that significantly enhance the memory and capabilities of RSNNs, with a strong emphasis on compatibility with hardware and neuromorphic systems. Firstly, we incorporate neuron-level synaptic delays, which not only allow the gradient to skip time steps but also reduce the overall neuron population’s firing rate. Subsequently, we apply a biologically inspired branching factor regularization rule to stabilize the network’s dynamics and make training easier by incorporating a time-local error in the loss function. Lastly, we modify a commonly used surrogate gradient function by increasing its support to facilitate learning over longer timescales when using binary spikes. By integrating these three innovative elements, we not only resolve several complex benchmarks but also achieve state-of-the-art results on the spiking permuted sequential MNIST task (psMNIST), showcasing the practicality and relevance of our approach for digital and analog neuromorphic systems
Electronic–Structural Phase Correlations in Oxygen‐Deficient Hafnia Nanocrystals
International audienceLayers of HfO2 and (Hf,Zr)O2 crystalline nano-particles are synthesized via direct liquid injection atomic layer deposition, and a comprehensive set of structural, chemical, and electrical characterizations is employed to elucidate their phase composition and functional behavior. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a compositional contrast between the films: (Hf,Zr)O2 layers contained up to 45% stoichiometric oxide, while pure HfO2 films are dominated by sub-oxides, especially under strongly reducing conditions, in which exclusively sub-oxide phases and p-type semiconducting behavior is revealed. Electrical measurements indicated room-temperature stabilization of polar phases and tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition with a Curie temperature near 200 K. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of tetragonal and orthorhombic HfO2 phases, providing insight into minor features observed ≈30° (2θ) in X-ray diffraction patterns. Notably, devices incorporating an AlN interlayer demonstrated a significant enhancement in pyroelectric performance, suggesting this strategy to advance the pyroelectric performance of HfO2-based materials, supporting their development for lead-free sensor technologies
