Functional profiles and organochlorine degradation potential in microbial communities of tropical epilithic biofilms: a case study in Guadeloupe (Lesser Antilles)

    No full text
International audienceThis study investigates the composition, structure, and predictive associated functions of epilithic bacteria living in the biofilms of a freshwater (FWR) and a mixed-saline (MSR) tropical river. High-throughput sequencing revealed a 69% overlap in species richness between the two sites. Cyanobacteria were dominant in freshwater, while heterotrophic classes like Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria were prevalent in the mixed-saline biofilm. Predictive functional analysis (FAPROTAX) indicated greater diversity in MSR, favoring organic matter degradation and nutrient cycling, with more bacterial OTUs involved in chemoheterotrophy and hydrogen oxidation (Wilcoxon, p > 0.001). In contrast, FWR had a higher abundance of OTUs linked to phototrophy and degradation of aromatic compounds and plastics (Wilcoxon, p > 0.001). Key microbial interactions were revealed between phototrophic cyanobacteria and heterotrophs such as Fulvivirga (Cytophagia), suggesting a pivotal role for this genus in the carbon cycle. Additionally, bacterial species known for their ability to remove chlorine from pollutants, such as Acidovorax, Acinetobacter, Comamonas, Curvibacter, Sediminibacterium, or bacterial species belonging to the Sphingomonadaceae family were more diverse and abundant in FWR site. These findings point to promising bioremediation potential driven by biofilm community activities, particularly in tropical freshwater environments impacted by organochlorine contaminants

Bio-based silver conductive ink for flexible printed electronics, and in-mold electronics

International audienceThe development of environmentally friendly electronic circuits offers a sustainable alternative to conventional printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing, which relies on chemically intensive and polluting processes. Screen printing of conductive inks is an effective and widely used method for fabricating flexible printed electronics (FPEs), and particularly well-suited for in-mold electronics (IMEs) applications. Screen printing of electronic circuits can be carried out on nearly all types of substrates, including recyclable and biodegradable polymers, thereby reducing the environmental impact. This paper presents the formulation of a silver conductive ink with stretchable properties, using poly(lactic acid) as the binder and Cyrene as the solvent, which are both biobased and biodegradable. Inks were formulated using silver flakes of different sizes (2.2 µm-5.6 µm) at a fixed content of 60%. Rheological behavior of the inks was measured to determine their printability, and resolution of printed patterns was tested using a scanning electron microscope. Thermal curing and photonic curing were used on the inks to study their electrical characteristics as functions of curing temperature and conditions. Among the latter tested formulations, the ink with a mixture of fine and large particles featured the best performance with an electrical resistivity of 34.77 ± 3.29 µΩ • cm after heat treatment at 120 • C and 9.39 ± 0.17 µΩ cm after photonic curing. This ink was also highly stretchable, with bending cycle tests showing an increase of electrical resistance only 8% after 1000 cycles, and the electrical continuity still intact even after 5000 cycles. Thermoforming tests confirmed electrical continuity at strains exceeding 30%. Demonstrators in FPEs and IME highlight the potential of these inks. This work shows that the developed ink exhibits electrical and stretchability properties equivalent to or even better than those of inks from previous research or commercial products, while reducing the environmental impact and enhancing user safety

The increasing demand for power components for high-voltage applications has led to a revolution in the field of power electronics. Gallium nitride (GaN) exhibits the necessary properties for these applications, such as a high critical electric field and a high saturation velocity, making it an alternative solution to silicon, whose properties limit high-voltage performance. Lateral GaN-based structures are already commercially available, but they do not fully exploit GaN's exceptional properties to reach theoretical limits in terms of voltage withstand capability. Although vertical structures address the functional limitations of lateral structures for high-voltage applications, other factors still prevent the full utilization of GaN's advantages. Thus, this thesis focuses on understanding the factors related to material quality and the optimization of growth and fabrication processes that prevent vertical GaN-on-GaN components from achieving an optimal voltage withstand capability. Micro-Raman physical characterizations are used to study structural defects and doping, while electrical characterizations using Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (DLTS) are conducted to identify the origin and type of defects. The correlation between these characterizations will lead to conclusions regarding the origin of electrical limitations.

This dissertation examines contemporary urban dwelling through the lens of the ethics of care. Based on ethnographic research conducted in Lyon and Madrid—at the scale of a street, a square, or a neighborhood collective—it portrays spatial care as a set of situated practices. Through an engaged research approach embedded within care networks, it explores the relationships, practices, and solidarities through which individuals and collectives care for one another and for their living environments. The thesis argues that dwelling is not merely a matter of being located in a place but rather a relational, attentional, conflictual, and transformative process. Spatial care is understood as the ensemble of gestures, practices, and dispositions through which inhabitants sustain both places and ties. In the context of the Anthropocene—conceived as both an ecological and ethical crisis—spatial care offers a crucial interpretative lens for understanding inherently fragile forms of cohabitation. The geopolitical hypothesis of spatial care sheds light on the tensions, rivalries, and struggles for the appropriation of urban commons, moving beyond an irenic vision of living together toward the recognition of a more complex and dynamic living-with, one that can only endure through care. The methodology adopted is that of inhabited research: a comparative ethnography carried out in Lyon and Madrid, within networks of care. This micro-geographical approach positions the researcher as an embedded actor, both scholar and inhabitant. It combines long-term immersion, interviews, participant observation, and collaborative restitution. This method embraces the researcher's implication in the field and mobilizes listening as a central analytical tool. It enables the observation of concrete practices of care for urban spaces, conflicts of use and norms, as well as the strategies by which inhabitants sustain or transform the commons. The contributions of this work are twofold. Empirically, it demonstrates that urban care networks in Lyon and Madrid sketch out a genuine politics of the ordinary, capable of reshaping the production of the city in depth. While marked by tensions, these networks reconfigure forms of citizenship, neighborly relations, and institutional interactions, inventing situated modalities of solidarity and governance. Theoretically, the thesis advances a doctrine of maintenance (entretien) as an analytical and prospective category to translate spatial care into French. To maintain space means not only to sustain its materiality but also to preserve the conditions of coexistence—that is, to care for the multiple relations that populate it. Common maintenance thus becomes nothing other than the care of the space “in-between,” the maintenance of the commons. This perspective calls for shifting the gaze from the macrosocial structures of urban production to the everyday micro-practices that are often invisible yet decisive for holding commons together. It highlights the importance of discreet gestures, shared attentions, and acknowledged conflicts in the making of a livable city. By articulating ethnographic inquiry with theoretical reflection, the thesis advances an understanding of the urban through the prism of a relational ecology of the everyday. In doing so, it contributes to the discipline of geography by expanding its conceptual and methodological toolkit: it proposes integrating spatial care and maintenance as operative categories for analyzing ordinary spatialities, and it invites us to conceive geography as a science of attention and cohabitation.

In a data-driven world, machine learning and scientific computing have become increasingly important, justifying dedicated hardware accelerators. This thesis explores the design and implementation of arithmetic units for such accelerators in Kalray's Massively Parallel Processor Array.Machine learning requires matrix multiplications that operate on very small number formats. In this context, this thesis studies the implementation of mixed-precision dot-product-and-add for various 8-bit and 16-bit formats (FP8, INT8, Posit8, FP16, BF16), using variants of a classic state-of-the-art technique, the long accumulator. It also introduces techniques to combine different input formats. Radically different methods are studied to scale to the larger range of 32-bit and 64-bit formats common in scientific computing. This thesis also studies the evaluation of some elementary functions. An operator for exponential function (crucial for softmax computations) extends a state-of-the-art architecture to accept multiple input formats. The inverse square root function (used for layer normalisation) is accelerated by combining state-of-the-art techniques for range reduction, correctly rounded multipartite tables, and software iterative refinement techniques.

An electrolyte-gated transistor for the monitoring of a CRISPR/Cas activity

International audienceDetection of Ribonucleic acids (RNA) is a critical step in the identification of viral or bacterial infections in humans and animals. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) remains the gold standard, but clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats linked to a Cas endoribonuclease particle (CRISPR/Cas) have recently revolutionized the recognition step of two RNAs, i.e. the CRISPR-RNA (crRNA) and the target, providing a much better selectivity compared to the naked hybridization on which RT-PCR is based. Here, we combine the high efficiency of the CRISPR/Cas13a system with the transduction and amplification capabilities of an electrolyte-gated graphene field-effect transistor (EGGFET) for the detection of specific RNA sequences. In these devices, fabricated on flexible plastic substrates, the active material (reduced graphene oxide, rGO) is deposited by printing and then functionalized with Au nanoparticles decorated with polyU RNA reporter strands. In this system, the CRISPR/Cas13a complex acts as a catalyst: in the presence of a specific RNA target sequence, the enzymatic function is activated and the polyU RNA reporter strands are cleaved from the Au nanoparticles, inducing a loss of negative charges on the rGO layer. This phenomenon leads to measurable changes in the transfer curve of the transistors. These sensors were tested for the detection of a SARS-CoV-2 RNA sequence and showed a linear response in the range of 10 -7 -10 2 ng μL -1 with an estimated limit of detection of 10 fM. This work is an important milestone in the development of the next generation of point-of-care RNA sensors

Scattering theory and an index theorem on the radial part of SL(2,R)

International audienceWe present the spectral and scattering theory of the Casimir operator acting on the radial part of SL(2,R). After a suitable decomposition, these investigations consist in studying a family of differential operators acting on the half-line. For these operators, explicit expressions can be found for the resolvent, for the spectral density, and for the Moeller wave operators, in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function. An index theorem is also introduced and discussed. The resulting equality links various asymptotic behaviors of the hypergeometric function
