Automotive battery pack standards and design characteristics: a review
International audienceThe latest advancements and near-future trends in automotive battery packs, underlying regulatory compliance, and performance requirements are presented in this paper. In response to these specifications, high-level solutions that converge towards a standard architecture for passenger cars are provided. Transitioning to high-voltage systems (400 V-800 V), which support charging power levels above 350kW, reduces the required current. This, in turn, lowers the weight and volume of cell/module connectors and high-voltage cables in the drivetrain. Additionally, optimization strategies are crucial for enabling fast charging in all conditions, especially in cold climates, while ensuring safe operation, preventing thermal runaway, and reducing charging times to under 20 minutes. Also, advances in energy density (up to 300 Wh/kg) and battery capacities make advancements in enhancing the electric vehicle's range beyond 1000 km per charge. Key factors such as electrical performance, safety, mechanical integrity, reliability, endurance, environmental conditions, and diagnostics are examined. This study explores the next generation of cost-effective and high-performance battery systems and discovers near-future battery technologies, including sodium-ion chemistry and rare-earth-free alternatives, as well as battery applications in aviation

Bronchiectasis in France: data on disease characteristics in 630 patients from the European Bronchiectasis registry (EMBARC)
International audienceBackgroundLittle is known about the characteristics of adults with bronchiectasis in France.MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to describe the characteristics of adults (≥18 years) with clinically-significant bronchiectasis, diagnosed on a combination of respiratory symptoms and CT scan findings, and followed in 18 participating centers. Data on, etiology, lung function, symptoms, microbiology, treatments and quality of life were collected.ResultsBetween January 2016 and July 2022, 630 adults (females: 66%; ≥55 years: 73.8%) were included. Idiopathic and post-infective causes represented 33.0% and 37.1% respectively; COPD and asthma, which were present in 15.6% and 23.6% of subjects, were considered as causes of bronchiectasis in only 3.8% and 2.9%, respectively. Only 25% had normal spirometry and 7.3% required long-term oxygen therapy. Daily sputum production was present in 78.1% and 29.0% had a modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea score ≥2. Positive bacterial sputum culture was found in 77.8% of those with sputum samples (n=455); including 157 (34.5%) positive for Pseudomonas aeruginosa within the past year. During the year prior to study entry, 75.4% of patients reported at least one respiratory exacerbation, 33.8% had at least one hospitalization and 24.5% received outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT). Using the bronchiectasis severity index 26.0%, 36.4% and 37.6% were considered as having mild, moderate and severe disease, respectively.ConclusionIn France, adults with bronchiectasis experience significant disease burden. Respiratory exacerbations are responsible for healthcare utilization and their prevention may require specialized multidisciplinary care and the development of novel therapeutic interventions

Coupling differential voltage analysis and distribution of relaxation times II: Evaluating the impact of Si content in the degradation of coated NMC811/SiGr cells
International audienceThe degradation of coated LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cells with Silicon-Graphite (SiGr) composite anodes containing varying Si content is investigated using Differential Voltage Analysis (DVA), Incremental Capacity Analysis (ICA) and Distribution of Relaxation Times (DRT). ICA distinguishes Si from Gr specific degradation processes. It is observed an incomplete delithiation-related Si capacity loss in cells with 7 % and 11 % Si, which increases during early cycles and later stabilizes. Such behavior is not the reported permanent Si loss of active material, as the capacity of moderately and highly lithiated Si remains unchanged. Instead, a sudden rise in resistance at low states of charge is revealed. That is likely due to Si particle-particle contact loss during shrinkage, after particles are accommodated by a grown Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) matrix and due to SEI cracks closure when particles contract. Data suggest a minimal threshold amount of Si may be necessary to trigger it, explained by Gr acting as electrical-contact keeper to Si particles. The proposed coupling of techniques made observable Si-driven effects in NMC811/SiGr cells, capacity fading primarily due to loss of lithium inventory and resistance increase dominated by the Si at lower voltages and by the NMC811 at medium and higher voltages

Leveraging on ESG engagement in reward-based crowdfunding campaigns: a winning bet?
International audiencePurpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the influence of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) discourse on the funding success of a reward-based crowdfunding campaign. Specifically, the funding success of 27,213 reward-crowdfunding campaigns proposed on the French Ulule platform between 2012 and 2018 will be evaluated. The analysis is based on the self-determination and warm-glow theories to assess the impact of projects’ ESG orientation on their success in raising their funding goals. Design/methodology/approach To achieve our goal, we first identify the ESG discourse in reward-based crowdfunding campaign descriptions, which we measure through a text analysis. We then explore its impact on funding success through Logit and OLS regressions (for robustness, when using another proxy for success). We also disentangle the type of project sponsors, namely individual entrepreneurs, companies and non-profit organizations. Control variables set forth by previous literature as having an impact on crowdfunding success are included in our estimations. Findings Our results confirm that the presence of an ESG discourse in the campaign’s description has a positive impact on its success. In addition, this positive signaling effect is even stronger for corporate sponsors as compared to individual entrepreneurs or non-profit organizations. Practical implications The obtained results contribute to enriching the existing research on the positive signals perceived by contributors during crowdfunding campaigns. Aligning their narratives with ESG values is beneficial for corporate sponsors allowing them to enhance fundraising performance. In addition, we also argue that crowdfunding platforms should consider the advantages of incorporating all components of ESG information to help address the information asymmetries inherent in the crowdfunding financing mechanisms. Originality/value We use a singular and exhaustive dataset provided by the Ulule platform allowing to provide more nuanced findings on the relationship between projects’ pro-societal orientation and the campaigns’ success. Our results show that the ESG score has a positive impact on success, but that this relationship is moderated by the project owner. We thus provide a significant contribution to the literature on crowdfunding and sustainable entrepreneurship through a new measure of responsible project orientations and clarify some mixed findings set forth by previous research. To the best of our knowledge, this processing has not been applied to reward-based crowdfunding platforms
L’exil au cinéma : décentrement et déterritorialisation dans "Berlin Alexanderplatz" de Burhan Qurbani (2020), ou le potentiel critique de l’intertexte
International audienceThis article analyzes Burhan Qurbani's 2020 adaptation of Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929) to demonstrate how references to the literary canon serve to legitimize contemporary exile narratives and performatively reinscribe the figure of the foreigner into national imaginaries and collective memory.Burhan Qurbani, born in 1980 in West Germany to Afghan refugee parents, transposes the character of Franz Biberkopf into Francis, a refugee from Guinea-Bissau attempting to establish himself in Berlin after surviving the Mediterranean crossing. By adapting Döblin's novel to the contemporary migratory experience, Qurbani repositions a reality often reduced to a "crisis" onto familiar terrain. He inscribes the Other into the urban topography inherited from the interwar period (diachronic axis) and reintegrates the African presence into German collective memory (synchronic axis). Through this intertextual play, he historicizes and reterritorializes a transnational phenomenon, refuting the idea that the so-called "migration crisis" is a recent and "imported" problem. The film thus interrogates the discourse of the "welcoming culture" promoted by Angela Merkel in 2015, highlights the amnesiac gaze of a society focused on its moral restoration, and makes the sub-Saharan refugee the catalyst for a "return of the repressed" colonial past.
